The Long Term Evolution (LTE) of the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access and Radio Access Network is a new communication standard aimed for commercial deployment in 2010. Goals for LTE include support for improved system capacity and coverage, high peak data rates, low latency, reduced operating costs, multiantenna support, flexible bandwidth operations and seamless integration with existing systems. The aim of this book project is to study the impacts on the end-user and system performance when users with high bit rates tcp services are moving through the network. These impacts affect the reduced end-user or system throughput, e.g., due to congestion in the transport network, leading to poor utilization of the transport and radio resources available. To reach such an aim, it has been necessary (1) to create a new simulator with the ns-2 and perform simulation in different network settings and (2) formulate a mathematical model able to capture the principal dynamics of the real system. Possible solutions to mitigate the impacts are investigated by comparing the simulations results of tcp performance in the radio and transport network, with the mathematical model of it.

The authors have reviewed the present status of solar powered absorption systems. The book presents two cases studies considered: Netcare Moot Hospital system and the Vodacom World system. TRNSYS simulations are carried out for both systems and their results presented. A complete system performance analysis will be carried for each system and the main performance indicators calculated. The book presents the system performance results obtained during the operation of the systems is presented and analyzed. The Moot system was commissioned in October 2009 and was in operation up until November 2011 when it was decommissioned where as the Vodafone Ste Solutions Innovation Center system was commissioned in November 2011 and is still operational. An economic analysis has been carried out for the Vodafone system and the annuity calculated and the cost per unit of cold produced found. Comparison of simulation results and the recorded system performance data compared and the discrepancies are explained. The main discrepancies are due to the weather data and the differences between the data sets used are explained in depth. The main conclusions of this study are summarized.

This work also investigates the complexity of the channel estimation techniques in terms of the number of complex multiplications and by varying the FFT size and number of CP. furthermore, the effect of varying the number of antennas at the transmitter and receiver ends, where 2 x 2 and 4 x 4 antenna arrangements are considered as a case studies. The performance of these channel estimation techniques is also studied for EVA standard channel model in LTE. The considered channel model is EVA standard channel model with Doppler shift of 300HZ.Simulation results in this thesis show that the ML channel estimation technique has the best performance. In terms of number of complex multiplications it is proved the ML has lower complexity. In fiber optic communication systems, a pre-amp Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) is used at the input of the optical receiver to increase the receiver sensitivity by amplifying the photon detector incoming optical signal. In this text, the pre-amp EDFA noise performance was characterized first at the pre-amp level through modeling using computer simulations. Then, the pre-amp noise performance was characterized experimentally at the optical receiver level. This work demonstrates that simulations and experiments together provide the optimization of the pre-amp EDFA performance. The experimental work of presented here focuses on the pre-amp EDFA noise performance characterization and analysis at the optical receiver level. This is the ultimate performance characterization method for the pre-amp EDFA, and it was performed through testing the optical receiver transmission performance under different pre-amp operating conditions.

Resource allocation and power optimization is a new challenge in multimedia services in cellular communication systems. The performance of three directory-based cache- coherence protocols; strict request-response, intervention forwarding and reply forwarding are evaluated via simulation on the SOME-Bus, which is a fiber-optic interconnection network supporting DSM. The simulated system contains 64 nodes, each of which has a processor, cache controller, directory controller and output channel. Simulations have been conducted for each protocol to measure average processor utilization and average network latency for varying values of DSM parameters such as the ratio of the mean channel service time to mean thread run time (T/R), probability of a cache block being in modified state {P(M)}, the fraction of write misses {P(W)} and under different traffic patterns. The results reveal that the performance of all protocols decreases under all traffic patterns as P(W),P(M) or T/R increases. The effect of P(W) on the performance of the protocols reduces as P(M) increases. Reply forwarding performs the best for high P(M) values, intervention forwarding yields the best performance for low P(M) and high P(W) values and strict request-response is the best protocol under hot-region (HR) traffic.

Fiber nonlinearity is one of the major effects that limits the performance of optical fiber communications systems. Such systems can be modeled by a set of nonlinear stochastic equations, which generally cannot be solved analytically. Due to involved complexity, these equations most often are solved using direct Monte Carlo simulations, which can be prohibitively time consuming. In this work, we discuss several useful techniques to make the system performance predictions more efficient and accurate. We review the split-step Fourier method and introduce efficient algorithms to improve its efficiency. We review biased Monte Carlo methods and show how to apply them to model nonlinear effects in optical fibers. We finally present a deterministic method based on isolating the dominant nonlinear effects and calculating the complete probability density function of the nonlinearly-induced impairment and combining it with the noise-induced penalty. Although not comprehensive, these methods show how to identify the critical physical effects in a complex system and design an efficient solution. The scope of application of these techniques may extend beyond the problems studied in this work

The first part of this book presents the one-parameter transformation Lie groups to model nonlinear systems that can lead to a clearer understanding of system performance by producing a more detailed uncertainty model. The approach assumes the case of the generalized nonlinear multi-input multi-output (MIMO) feedback system that can be reduced as required to single-input single-output (SISO). It begins by presenting Lie symmetries simply from the engineering rather than the traditional, highly abstract mathematics perspective. This approach is potentially unifying. The second part derives an uncertainty model of a practical highly nonlinear system, showing that the uncertainty model reduces the system dynamics to a differential inclusion problem, allowing Lie group analysis of affine symmetries with additive perturbations and permitting computer simulations. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations of the steady state Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the second order k-ω turbulence model were performed to investigate the Drag Coefficients of the Class 8 trucks under different geometric configurations. The reduction rates of aerodynamic drag using several add-on devices such as base flap, boat tail, underbody skirt and tractor-trailer gap are investigated through the CFD simulations. Moreover, simulations by using different lengths and angles of the base flap and boat tail were conducted; the comparison indicates that the base flap design is more effective for the drag reduction. The optimized range of the length and angle of the base flap design is confirmed by a set of systematic CFD simulations. Also, a set of wind tunnel experiments had been conducted to confirm the outcomes from the CFD simulations.

Resource allocation and power optimization is a new challenge in multimedia services in cellular communication systems. To provide a better end-user experience, the fourth generation (4G) standard Long Term Evolution/Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE/LTE-Advanced) has been developed for high-bandwidth mobile access to accommodate today’s data-heavy applications. LTE/LTE-Advanced has adopted discontinuous reception (DRX) to extend the user equipment’s battery lifetime, thereby further supporting various services and large amounts of data transmissions.
