Published in 1991, the first edition of Forecasting and Management of Technology was one of the leading handful of books to deal with the topic of forecasting of technology and technology management as this discipline was emerging. The new, revised edition of this book will build on this knowledge in the context of business organizations that now place a greater emphasis on technology to stay on the cutting edge of development. The scope of this edition has broadened to include management of technology content that is relevant to now to executives in organizations while updating and strengthening the technology forecasting and analysis content that the first edition is reputed for. Updated by the original author team, plus new author Scott Cunningham, the book takes into account what the authors see as the innovations to technology management in the last 17 years: the Internet; the greater focus on group decision-making including process management and mechanism design; and desktop software that has transformed the analytical capabilities of technology managers. Included in this book will be 5 case studies from various industries that show how technology management is applied in the real world.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: A new discipline that has arisen recently as a hot new topic for management is knowledge management. Not only is management challenged to face the strategic importance for competitive advantage that business consultants promise, but also information professionals who have been engaged in this subject already for quite a long time. This dissertation focuses on a comparison of knowledge management with information management, based on a model that embraces both information and knowledge. Founded on an examination of the unique characteristics of knowledge, the concept of knowledge management is introduced. To stay in synch with the pace of change in their operational and competitive environments organisations require a balance of organisational competencies for knowledge management and change proficiency. This requires a new kind of learning called „double-loop learning” and implies knowledge flows across organisational boundaries. Knowledge Management can be expected to fundamentally change the management perspective on movements such as Total Quality Management and Business Re-engineering, forcing management to basically rethink the theory of processes. Another focus of this dissertation is on the role that technology plays in knowledge management. As information professionals are traditionally concerned with technology it has been considered to look at knowledge management technology in more detail. Technology is one of six key factors facilitating kn...

This book serves as a training tool for individuals in industry and academia involved with heat transfer applications. Although the literature is inundated with texts emphasizing theory and theoretical derivations, the goal of this book is to present the subject of heat transfer from a strictly pragmatic point of view. The book is divided into four Parts: Introduction, Principles, Equipment Design Procedures and Applications, and ABET-related Topics. The first Part provides a series of chapters concerned with introductory topics that are required when solving most engineering problems, including those in heat transfer. The second Part of the book is concerned with heat transfer principles. Topics that receive treatment include Steady-state Heat Conduction, Unsteady-state Heat Conduction, Forced Convection, Free Convection, Radiation, Boiling and Condensation, and Cryogenics. Part three (considered the heart of the book) addresses heat transfer equipment design procedures and applications. In addition to providing a detailed treatment of the various types of heat exchangers, this part also examines the impact of entropy calculations on exchanger design, and operation, maintenance and inspection (OM&I), plus refractory and insulation effects. The concluding Part of the text examines ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) related topics of concern, including economies and finance, numerical methods, open-ended problems, ethics, environmental management, and safety and accident management.

It is a clear international trend that universities are expected to take on technology transfer and commercialization of research as a part of their mission. This development is supported by government initiatives aiming to develop a better infrastructure for technology transfer. This book looks at the development of an infrastructure for university technology transfer in Norway. The use of government policies and support schemes is presented and analyzed. Although the technology transfer initiatives need to be adapted to the national context, four lessons can be learned from looking at the Norwegian efforts. These are related to the long- term efforts required to build an infrastructure for technology transfer, the role of bottom-up involvement from universities and researchers, the establishment of relations to commercial actors, and the development of competent persons to work as boundary spanners in the intersection between academic research and industrial application. This book provides examples and discusses good practise based on the lessons learned from the Norwegian efforts to promote technology transfer from universities.

Especially universities are increasingly challenged to fulfill their third mission of commercialization. Technology transfer from science to industry is broadly based as it ranges from consultancy to the creation of spin-offs, which is the most visible form of technology transfer from science to industry. One opportunity to facilitate technology transfer in terms of spin-off creation is to establish technology transfer offices at research institutions to support scientists in creating spin-offs. Despite the fact, that research has made important contributions regarding the influence of scientist's individual characteristics on spin-off creation, literature is still lacking regarding the influence of TTOs on scientist's propensity to create a spin-off.In my work I am trying to provide first insights into the perception of TTOs by scientists and which aspects of consultancy offered by TTOs are of most importance for academic entrepreneurs during the creation of a spin-off.

A study was designed to evaluate the perceived impact of headteacher transfers on the management of Government Grant Aided Secondary Schools in Kampala district, Uganda, East Africa. Fifty percent of Headteachers, 90% of the deputies, 50% of Board of Governors, 23% of teachers participated in the study. The findings showed that not in all transfer cases are the Board of Governors consulted. Thus, they are forced either to accept or reject the new headteacher. It was also established that transfer of a headteacher has an effect on staff management because the new head may differs from the old, in terms of personality and interpersonal skills and attitudes, experience and the style of leadership. To a lesser extent, the Management of students'discipline was interfered with especially after the transfer of a disciplinarian headteacher. The Ministry of Education and Sports is advised to work hand in hand with all the stakeholders to be involved in the process of headteacher transfers. Further studies are needed to understand transfers of headteachers of other types of schools in the Education sector in Uganda and neighboring states of the East African region.

Knowledge management is controlling the transfer, distribution, and availability of knowledge. Traditionally, knowledge management processes are predefined; e.g. it is laid out in detail which document template, data structure, system, or work flow steps have to be used in order to manage knowledge. But knowledge management itself is complex. It is simply not possible to predefine the typical flow of work in knowledge intensive processes in advance. So rather than trying to determine the procedures it is more promising to analyze which factors can be used in order to control the outcome of the knowledge management process. By respecting the lean knowledge management principles, developed and first presented within this book, any manager can control the success of knowledge management in a lean software project any time.Enterprise 2.0 and Web 2.0 technologies perfectly support the lean knowledge management principles, and far better than any traditional approach, based on text processors, presentation software, spreadsheets, and E-Mail can do. Together, the lean knowledge management principles and Enterprise 2.0 form a new approach to knowledge management, which delivers value that can not be reached otherwise.

In this book, the problem of management in an organization with a hierarchical structure is modeled as a hybrid multi-layer switching control problem. A novel approach is proposed to transfer a management problem to a control system problem. The supervisory control of a Discrete-Event System (DES) is used for decision making in the organization. This method takes advantage of the hierarchical structure of an organization to find the optimal solution in terms of achieving the desired scopes of the project while minimizing the resources (time and cost). Although the problem formulation is explained for a hierarchical organization, the method is general enough to be applied to any team collaboration problem including the flat structure organizations. In fact, this methodology improves the monitoring and controlling phase of the project management.

For centuries, trade has endured stumbling blocks, mistakes, and moments of inspiration. It has contributed to the modern, globalized world in which we live, and the increasing economic, social, and political importance of trade has spawned a phenomenon called the multinational organization. However, these organizations have a national home to where profits will ultimately have to come, and in their effort to maximize the amount repatriated, they often engage in internal-pricing practices, known more commonly as transfer pricing This book reminds us all of the important issues of transfer pricing, and how easy it is to create friction between all of the interested parties. This book also goes on to provide an insight into how such conflicts can be assuaged or avoided altogether, and explains how transfer pricing may become a managerial tool by establishing a common language that may be used as one driver for creating added value throughout the organization. Transfer pricing is not simply about maximizing income. It is a much more important strategic management issue that, treated unwisely or with ignorance, is likely to lead to an incongruity in the added value of an organization's products and services as well as its crucial return on capital employed.

Techno-Anthropological approach has been formulated in researching a traditional settlement of Bhaktapur City, Nepal. The practices of indigenous people have been analyzed by juxtaposing the science along with the indigenous technology. It has been significantly concluded that, the impetus behind the city sustainability is primarily the indigenous knowledge and sometimes this knowledge is overwhelming to even the modern scientific aspects too. Indigenous technology of water management in the historic city of Bhaktapur has been also found to be significant not only in terms of supply rather in terms of quality of water too. The reusability of water resources has given an excellent paradigm even to the modern approaches too. The lifestyle in terms of culture and religion has been associated with water for this city, and water management is also facilitated through cultural practices and religious establishments. A city regarded as 'City of Devotees' has disseminated a remarkable approach for the water management by keeping aside the modern scientific approaches. The city was established in the 13th century and practices are continuously adopted since then as indigenous practices through unrelenting trial and error, the indigenous technology of water management has been found to be rational hence revitalization of some components might be more energy efficient and economic for present day water scarcity solution in the city

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The main question investigated in this European Research Project is whether corporate culture presents the biggest obstacle to knowledge management. To better answer this question two sub-questions are formulated: How does corporate culture influence the transfer of knowledge? and What are the key elements in a corporate culture that facilitate the process of knowledge transfer? In order to answer these questions this study contains three parts: the literature review, the field research, and analysis and discussion. The literature review explains the concepts of knowledge management and culture, discussing the relevant theories to each of the two. In the second part the methodology as well as the research site are stated and justified. Subsequently the results of the four case studies conducted are presented. The third part of this study analyses and interprets the findings with reference to the literature in order to answer the research questions. The limitations of the study will be discussed and recommendations for further research are offered. Last but not least, implications for the professional practice are pointed out. Corporate culture clearly influences the transfer of knowledge. This influence is exerted by some key elements as proposed by T. Davenport and L. Prusak (1998), such as trust between the knowledge provider and the knowledge receiver, shared language, (un)structured time and meeting places, the willingness to share, the willingness...

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The following report explores the main aspects of knowledge management. The history of knowledge management reveals that different trends and developments influenced the evolution of a new management theory. Advanced information technologies that enable global knowledge-sharing and the recognition that people are the most valuable resource in a fast changing environment are the main reasons why knowledge management has become increasingly important. An attempt to clarify the terminology demonstrates that there is no generally accepted definition of knowledge management. This report defines knowledge management according to the three dimensions content, culture and infrastructure and thus, provides a basic framework to the main knowledge processes. The differentiation between the ‘codification’ approach and the ‘personalisation’ approach is essential in the evaluation of the implementation process. The first approach mainly relies on computer systems and databases whereas the latter focuses on person-to-person contacts. Both strategies can be combined to a certain extent, however, the main focus should only be on one of the two strategies. The most common pitfalls for ineffective knowledge-sharing are cultural barriers and the fact that many organisations overestimate the role of technology. Thus, success factors include fostering a knowledge-sharing culture and embedding the use of technology in everyday practice. Inhaltsverzeichnis:Inhaltsverzeichnis:...

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, European School of Business Reutlingen, language: English, abstract: Management research is constantly criticized in the academic community to have very little impact on managers in practical life. This problem is highly discussed in academic circles and often referred to as the utilization problem (van Aken, 2004) or the rigor-relevance dilemma/gap (Fincham & Clark, 2009; Avenier, 2010). The problem is that the conducted management research is either scientifically verified, but not relevant for practice or practically relevant but not scientifically verified (van Aken, 2004). There are various explanations for this problem. Many researchers claim that a lack of sufficient communication presentation of management research is the root of the problem (Davies, 2007). This is in accordance with the so-called "knowledge transfer problem"(Shapiro, Kirkman, & Courtey, 2007). Others blame the little relevance of management research for practitioners (Denyer, Tranfield, & van Aken, 2007), which is reflected in the "knowledge production problem" (Shapiro, Kirkman, & Courtey, 2007). Furthermore, management research is claimed as "too descriptive" (van Aken, 2004), which means that management science is only describing and analyzing but not actually providing solutions to problems. Lastly, some researchers describe management...
