Mayolo Alberto López Castellanos Agent Based Simulation Approach to Assess Supply Chain Complexity and its Impact on Performance

In today's global business environment, the intense competition, the changing and uncertain conditions, and the increasing customer's requirements are challenges for the companies' operational efficiency and profitability. In this context, companies highlight the importance of supply chain design and its holistic understanding in order to achieve and sustain competitive strengths. This book analyses supply chains as complex systems, whose performance is characterized by their structural configuration and emergent behaviour. The author analyses the supply chain structure and behaviour within the scope of complexity science. He focuses on supply chain complexity by means of a literature review and an empirical research, which give insights into the impact of complexity on supply chain performance. Moreover, within this book the supply chain is modelled as a complex system by considering the non-linear relationships of its geo-positioned elements. Finally, an agent based model is developed for the generic supply chain simulation, which allows assessing the impact of complexity on supply chain performance and characterizing the behaviour of supply chain designs. The materials presented in this book contribute to the understanding and management of supply chain complexity. This work complements existing complexity frameworks with a holistic analysis of complexity's impact on the performance of supply chain participants and their network. The findings of this work a...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,0, Cologne University of Applied Sciences, course: Supply Chain Management, language: English, abstract: Everyday thousands of containers are shipped worldwide in order to fulfil customer orders in time. Nowadays focusing only on domestic markets is no longer an option for achieving long-term business success as global competition forces companies to recognise the need for superior design, planning, operation, and coordination of their supply chain activities. These are strongly supported by the rapid progress of information technologies. This thesis aims at establishing the importance of information and its effects on supply chain management, thereby pointing out key aspects that technology plays in managing information. It is structured in the following way: The first chapter defines the relevant terminologies helpful in understanding the overall topic. The second chapter moves on to describe in greater detail the effective management of information flows and their relevance for the three supply chain macro processes. Before proceeding to examine information technologies; chapter 3 deals with the collaborative planning, forecasting, and replenishment approach in order to outline a framework for information exchange along the supply chain. In chapter 4 it is then necessary to discuss the impact of information technologies on facilitating the management of supply cha...

Simon Barth Managerial perception and assessment of catastrophic supply chain risks

Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, Maastricht University, language: English, abstract: Purpose - Catastrophic supply chain risks can have severe effects on companies' supply chains. Still, previous supply chain risk management research has predominantly focused on operationalrisks. The purpose of this study is to explore the construct of managerial risk perception and the assessment stage of catastrophic supply chain risks.Design/methodology/approach - A risky decision making model for catastrophic supply chain risks was applied in an explorative multiple case study approach. Interviews served as the mainsource for information.Findings - The degree of supply chain integration was found to be a prime determinant of the potential damage caused by disruptions due to catastrophic supply chain risks. The frequency of catastrophic supply chain events seems to be influenced to some degree by the number of suppliers. It is suggested that managerial perception of catastrophic supply chain risks is formed by the degree of potential damage and past exposure to catastrophic supply chain events. Several barriers to the assessment of catastrophic supply chain risks, such as missing top management priority, low supply chain risk management maturity and lack of obvious return were identified.A combination of "softer" supply chain risk assessment methods, expert opinions and simulation te...

Roman Rochel RFID Technology and Impacts on Supply Chain Management Systems

Today`s dynamic and competitive business environment puts an ever increasing pressure on companies to innovate, redesign processes, and leverage the potential of partnerships along the supply chain. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technology offering a solution. RFID can be used to automate and streamline identification processes at decreased costs. However, as RFID is only a way to collect the data at the lowest level, the technology must be integrated with the supply chain management systems. Also, the various information systems along the supply chain must be integrated to allow for exchange and in order to give a meaning to the data. This study deals with RFID technology introduction and impacts on supply chain management systems to give an insight into the current issues and status of the technology. It examines five RFID projects carried out by companies operating in different industries. The presentation and discussion of the results will help to better understand what RFID can deliver, what deficiencies companies reveal and where its application in supply chain operations is sensible and likely to occur.

Edmund Prater, Kim Whitehead An Introduction to Supply Chain Management. A Global Supply Chain Support Perspective

If you're a manager of a supply chain operation, or a student learning about supply chain management, this book will provide not only an overview of supply chain management but also a framework for subsequent, more detailed study in various aspects of supply management. This book reviews the evolution of supply chain management concepts and discusses trends in global markets and strategic competitiveness. It then focuses on the major issues involved in managing a competitive supply chain including: forecasting, inventory management, distribution, dealing with uncertainty, reverse logistics, and customer service. Coverage of the dynamic, evolving issues pertaining to supply chains that affect the global business community concludes the book. With this book in hand, you'll be better equipped to conceptualize the management of supply chains as a collection of business processes; identify primary and secondary value chain processes; distinguish between the umbrella term, "supply chain management," and its component functions; and understand the basic tools of forecasting and the need for accurate data and forecasts on which to base supply chain management decisions.

Seitz Michael Supply Chain Performance, Collaboration and Stability Measurement

Revision with unchanged content. Companies are competing in fast changing markets, characterised by high levels of variety and competition. Therefore they need two capabilities: the capability to understand their markets in terms of market drivers and market trends; and secondly the capability of a company and its supply chain to respond in a timely yet efficient manner. Managing such supply chains will be difficult without some degree of process integration and collaboration between supply chain partners. A first step is to know their own and that of their suppliers' performance capability. Michael Seitz's work was about constructing a performance measurement tool to identify the operational performance between adjacent members of a supply chain. The SCOR model was used as the basis of the Performance Measurement System. This was extended to include a Collaborative Index, an additional measurement which could assess the levels of supply chain integration and collaboration, and a Stability Index, which was developed to measure the robustness of the evaluated supply chain. This book is interesting for students and decision makers working in the area of supply chain who want to gain a deeper knowledge about measuring supply chain performance.

Christian Biewald Development of a supply chain performance measurement system

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Kempten, language: English, abstract: The goal of this master thesis is to provide an analysis of existing supply chain performance measurement systems as well as an evaluation of their suitability for the electronics manufacturing industry. Furthermore, the hypothesis that the implementation of a supply chain performance measurement system in cooperation with supply chain partners will lead to sustainable competitive advantages within the supply chain is going to be proven. As competitiveness in future industry will be increasingly "supply chain vs. supply chain", rather than "firm vs. firm", holistic performance measurement systems become more and more relevant to global operating companies (Hult, 2008, p.538). Although the efficient management of global supply chain networks already has the potential to create competitive advantages, most industrial companies still focus on production efficiency and selective optimization that disable fast adaption to changing customer requirements. In increasingly saturated markets a technology-driven competitive advantage is often quickly compensated by low-cost countries. In contrast high service quality established by efficient logistics processes can hardly be adopted in short time (Richert, 2006, p.44). Especially in the areas of fast moving consumer goods and the electro...

Your business is a system, made of many moving parts that must synchronize to most efficiently meet the needs of your customers—and your shareholders. Interruptions in one area ripple throughout the entire operation, disrupting the careful coordination that makes businesses successful; that's where supply chain management (SCM) comes in. SCM means different things to different people, and many different models exist to meet the needs of different industries. This book focuses on the broadly-applicable Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) Model: Plan, Source, Make, Deliver, Return, and Enable, to describe the basic techniques and key concepts that keep businesses running smoothly. Whether you're in sales, HR, or product development, the decisions you make every day can impact the supply chain. This book shows you how to factor broader impact into your decision making process based on your place in the system. Improve processes by determining your metrics Choose the right software and implement appropriate automation Evaluate and mitigate risks at all steps in the supply chain Help your business function as a system to more effectively meet customer needs We tend to think of the supply chain as suppliers, logistics, and warehousing—but it's so much more than that. Every single person in your organization, from the mailroom to the C-suite, can work to enhance or hinder the flow. Supply Chain Management For Dummies shows you what you need to know to make sure your impact leads to positive outcomes.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,0, Northumbria University, language: English, abstract: Over the last few decades, the status of a supplier changed from a simple supplier of goods to a strategic partner. Numerous companies have recognised this development and drive for collaboration with their suppliers, in order to enable mutual growth. The literature review will firstly discuss supply chain management in general, followed by a presentation of the different SCM practices for supply chain improvement. The strategic supplier partnership will be further discussed, and the different buyer-supplier relationships will then be presented. Multiple studies will be listed which disclose the positive impact of a successful and long-term buyer-supplier relationship. Nevertheless, should exceptional long-lasting buyer-supplier relationships not be seen as a universal key to success, therefore a management system for supplier relationships will be introduced. The results from the literature review will be compared with the collected primary data. The primary research consists of 5 semi-structured interviews with representatives from global acting companies, which have an implemented SRM system. The findings of the research show, that all of the involved organisations see their suppliers as strategic partners, but at the same time allocate different relationship types to their different suppliers. Oliver Thomas Sustainable Supply Chain Management in the chocolate industry

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,0, Leipzig Graduate School of Management, course: Logistik, language: English, abstract: Sustainability has become a significant issue in many companies as it affects their reputation among customers. At the same time, outsourcing and globalization have resulted in the spreading out of supply chains across continents. Therefore, the focus of implementing sustainability has shifted from the single organization to the entire supply chain. This is of particular importance for chocolate manufacturers with their multinational supply chains as they are held responsible by the public for any irregularities which happen in their supply chain.Chocolate brand owners have been confronted with increasing criticism and pressure from politics and public due to the lack of sustainability in their supply chain. A current example is the TV documentary "Schmutzige Schokolade", a film about child labor on cocoa farms in Ivory Coast, for which the Danish filmmaker Miki Mistrati blames the chocolate manufacturers. The film, which was broadcasted on ARD on October, 6th, 2010, at 11:30p.m., has been sold altogether to 18 countries and was consequently watched by several million television viewers. This paper focuses on Sustainable Supply Chain Management in the chocolate industry. The following chapter contains a short theoretical introduction to the topic. It then focuses on giving ...

For anyone grappling with the elements required to change an organization's supply chain strategy in a 'green' direction, this book is a must read. «Having worked with Stuart Emmett on other ground breaking books, I can empathically say that this book written with Vivek Sood is another one in the same mould. This enjoyable book not only covers a topic that is critically relevant for every individual, but also provides a practical road map for a green supply chain strategy. Strongly recommended, it is a book of it time.» —Barry Crocker, Author and MSC Program Leader, University of Salford «After co-creating the supply chain management methodology in 1979, I have remained at the forefront of this field for the last 30 years by continually pushing the boundaries of thoughts and applications in Supply Chain Management. But, during all this time, nothing has excited me as much as our current endeavor on Green Supply Chains. It is the need of the moment, resonating in all directions. What is more important, it makes perfect commercial sense. This book by Vivek Sood and Stuart Emmett is a big step in furthering that discussion. It should be on the bookshelf of every progressive manager.» —Dr Wolfgang Partsch, Global Supply Chain Group, Munich, Germany «…As supply chains have become more visible to people around the world, and at the same time more global, questions about their impact on the environment and global sustainability have increased. People who care about our Planet often wonder what are the adverse impacts of transporting goods thousands of miles…goods that are often produced in manufacturing plants that are not environmentally friendly…and then packaged in what becomes waste. So, companies and governments worldwide have begun to address the questions. The authors have addressed the questions in an insightful manner. They have analyzed the supply chain processes, presented new ideas, and have backed these up with solid case examples from leading companies. The book is a must read for anyone who manages a supply chain, cares about the environment, and seeks actionable ideas for 'going green'.» —Gene Tyndall, Executive Vice President, Global Tompkins International «This book treats the 'Next Generation' Supply Chain in a phenomenal way. Remove built-in supply chain weak points to more effectively balance supply and demand Demand-Driven Inventory Optimization and Replenishment shows how companies can support supply chain metrics and business initiatives by removing the weak points built into their inventory systems. Beginning with a thorough examination of Just in Time, Efficient Consumer Response, and Collaborative Forecasting, Planning, and Replenishment, this book walks you through the mathematical shortcuts set up in your management system that prevent you from attaining supply chain excellence. This expanded second edition includes new coverage of inventory performance, business verticals, business initiatives, and metrics, alongside case studies that illustrate how optimized inventory and replenishment delivers results across retail, high-tech, men's clothing, and food sectors. Inventory optimization allows you to avoid out-of-stock situations without impacting the bottom line with excessive inventory maintenance. By keeping just the right amount of inventory on hand, your company is better able to meet demand without sacrificing the cost-effectiveness of other supply chain strategies. The trick, however, is determining «just the right amount»—and this book provides the background and practical guidance you need to do just that. Examine the major supply chain strategies of the last 30 years Remove the shortcuts that prohibit supply chain excellence Optimize your supply/demand balance in any vertical Overcome systemic weaknesses to strengthen the bottom line Inventory optimization is benefitting companies around the world, as exemplified here by case studies involving Matas, PWT, Wistron, and Amway. When inefficiencies are built into the system, it's only smart business to identify and remove them—and implement a new streamlined process that runs like a well-oiled machine. Demand-Driven Inventory Optimization and Replenishment is an essential resource for exceptional supply chain management.

At the end a conclusion will be drawn based on the investigation carried out and a future perspective will be mentioned. The 21st Century has been characterized by drastic advances in product development and shorter product life cycles. The customer nowadays places a lot of emphasis on delivery times. Thus, rushing the right products to the end-user has been the main objective of most companies. More so, in order to maintain strategic advantages companies have to improve their prices in order to maintain their market shares. Supply Chain management is thus the strategic weapon needed by most global firms nowadays to stay on top of their game. Given that raw materials and the manufacturing processes take place at different locations and even continents. The coordination of information, materials and financial flow is therefore imperative in order for the smooth and swift flow of data and products to be ensured. Assessing and measuring the performance of processes along the entire supply chain is thus recommended. So that every Supply Chain partner in the SC-Network will benefit from the partnership. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 1,3, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: Modern consumers are concerned about more than quality and price of the products they purchase. They demand concrete and credible information about the entire procurement process. Unsubstantiated company statements on the sustainability and safety of sourcing processes have proven to be insufficient to meet those demands (Hofstede, 2003). More and more companies increase the transparency of their supply chain (SC). However, in order to reach customers and to fulfill their needs, companies have to effectively communicate supply chain transparency (SCT) to the end consumer (New, 2010).This thesis focuses on transparency in the apparel and food industry because especially here consumers claim insights into the global supply networks (Meise, 2011, p. 138). It analyzes tools to enable SCT and provides an overview of practical methods that are available to the apparel and food industry for communicating transparency to consumers. Moreover, the paper evaluates these methods based on their effectiveness at meeting consumer demand and illustrates how different approaches for enabling and communicating SCT can be combined. Lionel Willems On the Supply Chain in the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 80.00, Louvain School of Management, language: English, abstract: This paper addresses the question of how the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), defined as the industrial aspect of the fourth industrial revolution, will impact supply chain management (SCM) decisions. With this goal in mind, we first describe the conceptual and historical approaches of both the industry and supply chain management. The question of the legitimacy of a new industrial revolution is answered positively and the supply chain management discipline is organised in a flow-based model of ten managerial categories. A thorough cross-field literature analysis delivers the main changes, opportunities and challenges that the upcoming IIoT will bring to supply chains. A neutral approach is favoured and the generally optimistic literature regarding the IIoT is questioned. Cyber-physical systems will indeed redefine the way we provide goods and services to customers and therefore, the way entire supply chains are managed, strategically and operationally. More information, connectivity and intelligence will optimise operations to enable mass customisation and faster than ever times-to-market. Those changes will gradually transform supply chains into smart supply ecosystems, where inter-company boundaries will fade, and the nature of cooperation will evolve. Nonetheless, there is still a long way t...

Georg Baltes New Perspectives on Supply and Distribution Chain Financing. Case Studies from China and Europe

Globalization no longer means simply finding low-cost countries for sourcing, but has involved to include the opportunity for growth in Asia's emerging domestic markets, specifically China. This development results in extended, truly global supply chains and thus places a higher pressure on working capital. Therefore, several definitions of Supply Chain Management already encompass financial aspects and demand a more integrated consideration of material, information, and financial flows within supply chains. However, more precise theory on "Supply Chain Financing" is understudied and initial implementation of related solutions in industry has only gained momentum during and after the economic and financial crises of 2008 and 2009.In contrast to traditional financial instruments for supply chains - for instance trade finance products which have been around for more than a century - Supply Chain Financing leverages larger and influential members of supply chains. These firms might, for instance, provide easier and cheaper access to financing for smaller supply chain members supporting their profitability through renegotiated and reduced purchasing prices. Echoing recent research results on supply chain risk management, other firms may prefer to take on a supply chain perspective and work on creating agile and resilient supply chains. In this context, Supply Chain Financing can be employed to ensure liquidity for crucial upstream and downstream supply chain partners ...

Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich BWL - Unternehmensführung, Management, Organisation, Note: 1,0, Universität Wien (Institut für Transportwirtschaft und Logistik), 120 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: M&A activities are widely seen as a magic bullet to improve ones own position in an increasingly competitive environment. In 2006 more deals will be concluded than ever before. However, nearly all existing studies about merger success have shown the same results: only very few deals create meaningful value while half of all mergers actually destroy value. The main hypothesis of this master's thesis is that there is a high correlation between merger success and the way the supply chains of the two merging companies are integrated. Moreover supply chain management and mergers & acquisitions are two management instruments that - if used appropriately - highly support each other. In other words: supply chain management will make or break post-merger performance of a firm. The results of a survey conducted in the German speaking countries confirmed this assumption and give interesting insights in best practices of successful M&A management. However, in the M&A reality supply chain management still plays an insignificant role. It must be the aim to boost the scholarly discussion about this topic as well as its attention in practice. To determine supply chain synergies a new concept is presented. It is based on the SCOR-model ...
