This book seeks to explore the ambit of manpower planning. It surveys the existing literature on manpower planning and analyses the strength and limitations of the process. A thorough analysis is carried out on the various methods of manpower planning and a rigorous examination is undertaken on the operational techniques of forecasting manpower demand and supply. The inter-industry model is adopted to project the total demand for manpower in Assam and in the process the imbalance between the demand and the corresponding manpower supply is estimated. The objective behind the exercise is to indicate the imbalance between demand for and supply of manpower for different educational categories. This throws light on the surpluses or shortages which exist for different categories of manpower in an economy. The book presents an excellent exposition of the techniques used in the process of manpower planning.

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, , language: English, abstract: Universities are considered fundamental segment of the education sector that has been sensitive to external and internal environmental changes. It is evident that the universities in Kenya are operating in a different environment than they did since their inception and face the challenge of choosing which strategy to adopt to cope with this fast paced scenario. The choices made therefore will determine their success or failure. The objective of this study was to identify the determinants of strategic choice among universities in Kenya. This study was guided by contingency and resource dependency theories and reviewed past studies on the topic to identify a knowledge gap. The study employed a cross-sectional survey research design. Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Soziologie - Wissen und Information, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The paper seeks to analyze the changing role of the universities in the society through the public engagements. It does this by evaluating the manner in which the government provides sufficient funding and how the community anticipates a more open culture of the universities towards the public and the responsiveness to societal needs. It also helps engage in broader platforms with the public than before. Sharing of research allows people to gain benefits in learning and developing their lives. Moreover, the university's staff can be in a position to improve the profiles of the universities, assist in the identification of new funding streams as well as strengthen the research funding for the universities. And finally, the research gives an insight into how public and community engagement by universities helps to open up new avenues for research. The focal point of this text is unrest in secondary schools in Kenya. Having gone through the three levels of education in Kenya, (that is primary, secondary and university) and with a long teaching experience, noted that the most serious bottleneck facing our education system is the indiscipline that leads to unrest or strikes in schools and universities. This often escalates into massive destruction of private and public property by students any time they go on rampage. There is need for the Education sector to address the challenge in relation to student discipline. In order to achieve the goals of National education and become a middle level economy by 2030. The nation must awaken to reforms that would help bring change in society. Careful considerations can be made to ensure that unrest is a thing of the past in learning institutions in Kenya by embracing dialogue, collective and participative decision making in learning institutions.

Ratemo Waya Michieka Trails in Academic and Administrative Leadership in Kenya

Scholars, especially those interested in understanding how leadership has inhibited academic freedom and hindered effectiveness of institutions of higher learning have for long been engaged by the very important manner in which governance and leadership of higher education institutions in Africa is constituted and managed. The fact that there has been a dearth of work based on the experiences of those who have served as university leaders has created a major gap. Questions remain on how leaders of higher education institutions are identified, how they are prepared, the personal predispositions that individuals bring to the exercise of such positions and their personal experiences regarding what energizes or inhibits the performance of their work. Until recently, presidents in most African countries served as chancellors of public universities, identification of those who served as university leaders was largely a political process. But much has changed, with most countries establishing oversight bodies and the overall governance of higher education institutions divorced from the day-to-day political processes.Trails in Academic and Administrative Leadership in Kenya provides a personal account of the experiences in higher education leadership from an individual whose tenure in leadership straddled the two eras. In this book, Prof. Michieka provides an account of how his early education prepared him for roles in academic and institutional leadership in Kenya. The author shares...

The approaches used are the data envelopment analysis (DEA) and DEA-based Malmquist productivity index. In addition, a second-stage tobit regression is estimated to determine the possible causes of inefficiency. Mean scores in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination are used as output while gross enrolments, pupil-classes ratio and pupil-teacher ratio are used as inputs. In the second stage, a dummy variable to capture the location of the district is included in the model. The analysis of Tobit regression shows a negative significant relationship between Pupil Teacher Ratio is and efficiency thus high pupil teacher ratio is associated with inefficiency. Districts located in urban areas are found to perform better than their rural counterparts.

Inaugurations

The inaugural lecture is a tradition that has been practiced in western universities for centuries. These lectures originated in the great universities of continental Europe, spread to Great Britain, and then to North America. The tradition has now been appropriated further by universities around the world and especially of late in majority world countries. The inaugural lecture is a form of academic discourse, in which the recipient of a suitable academic honor--usually the bestowal of a form of professorial appointment--offers a public lecture in recognition of the event. McMaster Divinity College follows in this academic tradition by attaching public inaugural lectures to the appointment of scholars to professorial positions, and in particular to those appointed to endowed and named professorial chairs within the institution. McMaster Divinity College currently has six such endowed, named chairs held by its faculty. This volume contains the six lectures by those in these six chairs, representing the fields of preaching, theology, pastoral studies, Christian worldview, ministry studies, and Christian history. Each of these inaugural lectures is a contribution to scholarship in the field and a token of the inaugural professorial lecture.""Following the tradition of the great universities of Britain and Europe, McMaster Divinity College has not only featured its endowed chairs by holding inaugural lectures, but thanks to Stanley Porter, these recent lectures have been...

Otieno Manaseh The relationship between inflation and income inequality in Kenya

Inflation in Kenya has been a common phenomenon since independence. The focus of this study is to determine whether there exists an empirical relationship between inflation and income inequality in Kenya. The study concluded that though there seemed to be no long run relationship between inflation and income inequality in Kenya, their association was only detectable in periods characterized by shocks in inflationary trends. The study recommends that Kenya as a country should device means of effectively maintaining inflation at low levels. This can be achieved by; reducing government expenditure so as to avoid a situation of deficit monetization to cover for the budget deficit, development in agricultural technology so that the food production ceases to be rain dependent, research and development in the energy sector so that crude oil becomes an alternative rather than the major source of energy in the country. High and sustainable economic growth should be considered paramount in all efforts towards reducing the level of inequality and alleviating poverty.

The East-African country of Kenya registers a significant decline in the utilization of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services particularly in rural areas. Issues relating to sexual and reproductive health often give rise to feelings of shame among clients; hence health personnel dealing with these issues or providing counselling need to do so with a focus on ensuring respect and dignity. How much does the behaviour of health personnel affect utilization of services? To what extend is health personnel subject to socio-cultural factors and in what way does this affect the contact with clients? How can the current situation and the related health provision for the population be improved? The author Sandra Jeschke defined gaps in the behaviour of health personnel and its effects on patients. The data analysis and description of study results are followed by suggestions for effective personnel management taking into account the traditional, religious and cultural peculiarities that exist in Kenya. The book targets scientists in the multidisciplinary area of public health, decision makers involved in the human resource sector of health services, and the interested public.

The Human Developing Index published in this report specifies that Kenya has a low human development and thus its rank is 154 of 175 UN member states. This raises the question if the government of Kenya has implemented action to improve its development status and what sort of actions this has been. So, first, the status of development in a country must be assessed. After analyzing the data, concrete measures can be implemented. Berg-Schlosser describes in his abstract a bright range of indicators that exist for assessing development processes in a country. He points out that there is an urgent need for indicators which are used as benchmarks in international relations or for decisions for development by the IMF, World Bank and others. Generally, he emphasizes that the interpretation of the indicators must be done carefully. Often there are problems with the proper conceptualization and the operationalization of certain notions. Problems and limitations of such data analysis still remain. After a short introduction in chapter 2 about the important facts of Kenya, this essay tries to figure out in chapter...

Nico Cloete, Tracy Bailey, Peter Maassen Universities and Economic Development in Africa. Pact, Academic Core and Coordination

Universities and economic development in Africa: Pact, academic core and coordination draws together evidence and synthesises the findings from eight African case studies. The three key findings presented in this report are as follows: 1. There is a lack of clarity and agreement (pact) about a development model and the role of higher education in development, at both national and institutional levels. There is, however, an increasing awareness, particularly at government level, of the importance of universities in the global context of the knowledge economy. 2. Research production at the eight African universities is not strong enough to enable them to build on their traditional undergraduate teaching roles and make a sustained contribution to development via new knowledge production. A number of universities have manageable student-staff ratios and adequately qualifi ed staff, but inadequate funds for staff to engage in research. In addition, the incentive regimes do not support knowledge production. 3. In none of the countries in the sample is there a coordinated effort between government, external stakeholders and the university to systematically strengthen the contribution that the university can make to development. While at each of the universities there are exemplary development projects that connect strongly to external stakeholders and strengthen the academic core, the challenge is how to increase the number of these projects. The project on which this report is base...

Lejla Dizdarevic, Habib Alipour Tourism Planning in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Tourism planning in Bosnia and Herzegovina is an original and innovative book which resulted from 11 months long research. It examines the theoretical dimension of tourism planning approaches emphasizing the importance of two important dimensions, sustainability and community involvement. The author sets out to investigate institutions responsible for tourism development and to test possibility of application of "Third Way" model of tourism planning in the country. The findings show that the concept of tourism planning is well understood but remained a theoretical percept rather than an implementable practice. Furthermore, the present situation can be attributed to the political complexity of the economies in transitions and reluctance of the officials to commit themselves to a planning process which require responsibilities and sacrifices. The book gives chance to readers to draw clear picture of tourism potentials and problems in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The book is aimed to all those interested in tourism planning worldwide and especially tourism planning authorities in B&H with hope to be of great help in their future tourism planning practices and approaches

Most of the HIV/AIDS caregivers in Kenya live in various parts of the country and share many of the trials and tribulations associated with providing care to someone suffering from a terminal illness. Some have been forced into the role due to the death of their love one, while others may have voluntarily taken on the responsibility on a firm belief that the care they provide will make a difference. The experiences shared in this book capture some of day-to-day political, social, economic, cultural challenges and obstacles encountered by the HIV/AIDS caregivers in Nairobi, Kenya. Caregiver challenges are reviewed and recommendations are offered on the way forward. It also explores the role of the church and international social work in addressing international issues.

Given current projections of population and household numbers, housing has become arguably the most important issue in planning. Likewise, planning raises arguably the most important long term issues in housing, given the environmental consequences of urban development and the use of the home."Homes, Cities and Neighbourhoods" documents the evolution of typical urban landscapes from 1900 to the present with an emphasis on contemporary issues and practice. In doing this, the book examines in detail: the role of planning in the light of different interpretations of social change; quantity and quality in housing production; urban design in relation to housing and residential areas; and finally, the management of neighbourhoods. This book is intended for all those interested in the interaction between planning, housing markets and the urban environment in Britain.

Strategic planning becomes visual with strategy maps and the tools, techniques, and guidance for turning them into effective action. Developed as a companion workbook to John Bryson's best-selling Strategic Planning in Public and Nonprofit Organizations, Visual Strategy: A Workbook for Strategy Mapping in Public and Nonprofit Organizations, goes beyond making the case for good and effective strategic planning to making strategy visual through effective strategy mapping. Strategy mapping prevents groups of people from talking over one another and going around in circles. It helps people speak and be heard, produce lots of ideas and understand how they fit together, make use of causal reasoning, and clarify ultimately what they want to do in terms of mission, goals, strategies, and actions. Strategy mapping can join process and content in such a way that good ideas worth implementing are found and the agreements and comments needed to implement them are reached. The result is living strategic plans that act as useful guides to action. With detailed examples, actual strategy maps, process guidelines and hand-drawn illustrations, the book will help leaders, managers, students and other professionals see patterns across mission, goals, strategies and actions while helping to identify areas of alignment and misalignment and determine, real time, where elements are needed, missing or not useful in a strategic plan. For leaders and managers of public and nonprofit organizations, facilitators and consultants, professors and students of strategic planning, strategic management, strategic mapping, and public policy, professional development workshops focused on strategic planning and strategy mapping.

Winner of the Royal Town Planning Institute award for research excellence This critical examination of the development and implementation of planning gain is timely given recent changes to the economic and policy environment. The book looks both at the British context as well as experience in other developed economies and takes stock of how the policy has evolved. It examines the rationale for planning gain, how it has delivered substantial funds for infrastructure and affordable housing and, in the light of this, how it might continue to play a role in the funding of these. It also draws on overseas experience, for example on impact fees and public sector land assembly. It looks at lessons from the past for future policy, both for Britain and for countries overseas. Mechanisms to tap development value are also a global phenomenon in developed market economies – whether through formal taxation or negotiated contributions. As fiscal austerity becomes an increasingly challenging issue, ‘planning gain’ has grown in importance as a potential source of funding for infrastructure and new affordable housing, with many countries keen to examine, learn from, and adapt the experience of others. a critical commentary of planning gain as a policy timely post credit crunch analysis addresses recent planning policy changes

Mahmoud Owais Investigating Optimal Bus Routes. Planning and Operation in Urban Areas

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2015 in the subject Transportation Science & Technology, , course: Transit planning, language: English, abstract: Transit route Network Design Problem (TrNDP) is the most important component in Transit planning, in which the overall cost of the public transportation system highly depends on it. The main purpose of this study is to develop a novel solution methodology for the TrNDP, which goes beyond pervious traditional sophisticated approaches. The novelty of the solution methodology, adopted in this studyr, stands on the deterministic operators which are tackled to construct bus routes. The deterministic manner of the TrNDP solution relies on using linear and integer mathematical formulations that can be solved exactly with their standard solvers. The solution methodology has been tested through Mandl's benchmark network problem. The test results showed that the methodology developed in this research is able to improve the given network solution in terms of number of constructed routes, direct transit service coverage, transfer directness and solution reliability. Although the set of routes resulted from the methodology would stand alone as a final efficient solution for TrNDP, it could be used as an initial solution for meta-heuristic procedures to approach global optimal. Based on the presented methodology, a more robust network optimization tool would be produced for public transportation planning purposes.

Michael F. Middaugh, a noted expert in the field, shows how colleges and universities can successfully measure student learning and institutional effectiveness and use these results to create more efficient communications with both internal and external constituencies as well as promote institutional effectiveness to support student learning. «How can the assessment of institutional effectiveness be used to provide a solid foundation for planning? Middaugh has crafted a comprehensive, practical guide that also explains what accrediting agencies really want and need to know about these topics.» —Elizabeth H. Sibolski, executive vice president, Middle States Commission on Higher Education «Only Michael Middaugh, the unquestioned national leader in this field, could write such a lucid overview of how to make institutional assessment and planning really work as a tool rather than as a tedious requirement. Waithera Mwangi Naomi Land Adjudication and Consolidation Processess in Kenya

The question of absolute ownership of land in Kenya has remained a thorny issue, revolving around complex laws and lengthy procedures of adjudication, consolidation and registration of land. Land ownership has remained an elusive dream for many Kenyans owing to unjust acquisition of land by British colonial settlers in the early 19th century. In spite of Kenya attaining independence in 1963, landlessness has continued to persist on a large scale with recurrent land disputes among individuals and between communities being reported. This project examined the adjudication and consolidation processes undertaken in Kenya since independence with the enactment of individual tenure of indigenous land as well as the redistribution of the former 'white highlands' to Africans of Kenyan descent. Koibatek District within Rift Valley Province was identified as the case study for review, where completed and ongoing adjudication exercises were studied in Chebaran and Aram Kindonin areas respectively. The report also highlights problems and concerns raised by Officers involved in the exercise and residents within the concerned adjudication sections & suggests various recommendations.

John A. Warden The Air Campaign. Planning for Combat

In the short history of air warfare, no nation with superior air forces has ever lost a war to the force of enemy arms. In itself, however, air superiority no longer guarantees victory. Planning the aerial dimension of war must of necessity explore the complicated connection between air superiority and triumph in war. "The Air Campaign: Planning for Combat" focuses on the use of air forces at the operational level in a theater of war. It draws on fascinating historical examples from World War II and the Arab-Israeli wars, stressing that the mastery of operational strategy is key to victory. It stresses the importance of using air power more effectively – through mass, concentration, and economy of forces – because superiority in manpower, production capacity, and technology can no longer be assumed, even by a superpower. Topics covered include: Offensive and defensive operations; Air interdiction; Close air support; Reserves; Orchestration of war; Planning the air campaign. This book offers planners a greater understanding of how to use air power for future campaigns against a wide variety of enemy capabilities in a wide variety of air operations. It confirms that the classic principles of war also apply to air combat. Air officers who want to think about air campaigns before being called upon to command or staff one, combat officers of any service involved in operations-level staff activities, and serious students of the theory and practice of air warfare will find &...
