Martin Perry Environmental Policy for Business. A Manager's Guide to Smart Regulation

In the context of the worldwide concern with the sustainability of current forms of development, business managers are being required to engage with environmental policy more creatively than in the past. At the broadest level, business managers are being advised to embrace regulation as a source of competitive advantage rather than viewing it simply as a compliance cost and administrative burden. Irrespective of whether managers accept that "going beyond compliance" is a stimulus for innovation, business managers frequently face a policy environment in which choices need to be made over how policy agendas should be responded to. Contemporary policy approaches may mandate demonstration of best practice, without de ning what constitutes best practice or use policy approaches that give the option of "paying for pollution" or investing in clean technology. Frequently, the argument is made that there are reputational gains to being a first mover and putting the organization ahead of regulation, but the implication can be considerable upfront investment for uncertain returns. Against this context, this book provides a guide to the new world of environmental regulation for managers within business and students with a particular interest in understanding how environmental regulation works.

Jared Kolb The Need For Crisis

Responding to environmental problems is becoming an increasing priority of the world's population. As the developed world has pushed the boundaries of economic development, it is also principally responsible for many global environmental issues. Sustainable development has emerged as a potential solution to these problems, but is often so vague in definition, it provides little help. How then are we to affect change on environmental issues? This book seeks to answer such a question through a comparative case study, examining the differences between Canadian and German approaches to climate change and material waste disposal policy. The project works through the sustainable development literature and utilizes The Natural Step framework to make policy recommendations. It is the goal of this book to provide policymakers, interest groups and citizens alike with tools to improve the state of the environment everywhere.

Brian Meadows Preserving Biodiversity. The role of economics in international environmental policy-making

How can as much biodiversity as possible be preserved on the Earth? The author claims that the answer to this question lies in the realm of economics. Therefore, in this book he sets out to understand the role that economics plays in international environmental policy-making. He considers both the economic factors and the non-economic factors which are at play in such policy-making, and then considers whether both economic and environmental objectives can be jointly achieved in order to preserve biodiversity.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 1,3, University of Southampton, language: English, abstract: Following years of incredible economic development in China, the country today is facing severe, environmental problems. This has been widely acknowledged by Chinese leaders as well as by international scholars. This work presents a detailed analysis of the foreign environmental policy of the People's Republic of China (PRC) for the period from 1972 to the present day. In recent decades, the country's behaviour changed from having an initial policy of refusal to having a more cooperative position within international negotiations, combined with voluntary agreements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While the central government undertook its first steps towards a green, foreign environmental policy, scholars mainly analysed this changing behaviour from a political or economic standpoint. This work, however, no longer uses 'traditional' viewpoints to explain the changing behaviour, but focuses on social structures that act as drivers for China's cooperative behaviour within global environmental governance structures. Therefore, three hypotheses are developed from a constructivist framework. According to these hypotheses, China's foreign environmental policy is driven by three incentives: its new identity as a 'green' developing country; the emergence and cascade of th...

The battle against climate change has become predominant for environmental regulators around the globe. The EU is no exception, and the EU Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is the pinacle of EU environmental policy in this area. Aviation is among the latest industry sectors to be included in the Emission Trading Scheme, and while the Commission strive to produce effective and comprehensive policy on the subject, the EU's mode of regulatory co-optition pitches industry and environmental organizations against each other in the struggle for influence over the policy process. This book takes a closer look at the arguments of key stakeholders in the policy process pertaining to the inclusion of aviation in the EU ETS, and examines why certain stakeholders seemingly are able to influence policy development more successfully than others.

In addition, it is focused on the driving forces and levels of international and country-specific environmental policies. The roots of environmental policy are pointed out. In this context, the different levels of environmental regulations are identified therewith deducing implications for the compliance-behaviour of firms. This paper also explicates the environmental implications of different economic theories. It is exemplified how different stakeholders might influence the strategic orientation of enterprises towards environmental performance and the various environmental strategies on firm-level are explicated. It is especially focused on different approaches being developed in order to test the empirical evidence predictions of the "pollution haven hypothesis". Assefa Nega Valuing Irrigation Water Attributes

Natural resources such as water and environmental attributes are valuable assets to humans. Despite the various benefits derived from these resources obtaining the appropriate price for environmental resources is a bit difficult due to the absence of market. As a result most of the time macro-economic planners fail to recognize the total value of these resources. Thus failure of the market system to allocate a price for environmental resources correctly creates the need for economic measures of values to guide policy making. This book thus analyses the determinants of households' willingness to pay for irrigation water supply by using contingent valuation and choice experiment methods. Multinomial logit, Probit and random parameter logit models were used to analyze the factors influencing households' willingness to pay and to estimate measures of welfare change for farm households. The practical analysis on environmental resource valuation would be handy to professionals in environmental and natural resources economics fields or anyone else interested in pricing of environmental resources.

This accessible book is designed to help readers understand the life-cycle impacts of various plastics, clarifying the technical research and practical arguments to show when bio-based and recycled plastics might be useful options for reducing the overall energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste associated with traditional plastics. Plastics and Sustainability compares traditional fossil fuel-based plastics with bio-based plastics in terms of properties, environmental impacts, and costs – indicating what the most effective approaches could be for using recycled, biodegradable, or various bio-based materials. The book makes objective comparisons between bioplastics and all commonly used plastics, focusing on how they affect production economics, product requirements, and retailer and consumer needs. It incorporates research concerning life-cycle assessment, production techniques, and commercial applications, and presents «green» guidelines about product design, recycling, processing efficiency, and material selection. The book also reports on recent industry developments and commercial trends in an effort to synthesize conclusions that are necessary for finding the right balance between bio-based and fossil-fuel based plastic products. Marcus Wagner Consistency and Credibility.

Consistency and Credibility? identifies in its first part the extent of correlation between actual environmental performance, the use of physical environmental performance indicators and corporate environmental reporting in the paper and electricity industries in Germany and the UK. The results suggest environmental performance is mainly country-related, possibly due to differences in environmental legislation. This implies that any assessment of the relationship between environmental and economic performance of firms needs to be based on actual environmental performance data and cannot take reporting quality or information about the intensity of use of specific tools, such as environmental performance indicators as a proxy variable. The second part of the book therefore analyses the relationship between environmental and economic performance. Based on the results, the book's second part concludes that for firms in environmentally-intensive industries it is difficult to create a positive link between their environmental and economic performance, and that market settings as well as strategy considerations both can have an effect, but situational aspects determine which of these dominates.Consistency and Credibility? provides useful information for practitioners as well as deeper insights for academics about the link of environmental reporting and environmental performance measurement and how this interacts with economic success. It thus reveals valuable strategic insights ...

Tag-based approaches were originally designed to increase the throughput of capillary sequencing, where concatemers of short sequences were first used in expression profiling. New Next Generation Sequencing methods largely extended the use of tag-based approaches as the tag lengths perfectly match with the short read length of highly parallel sequencing reactions. Tag-based approaches will maintain their important role in life and biomedical science, because longer read lengths are often not required to obtain meaningful data for many applications. Whereas genome re-sequencing and de novo sequencing will benefit from ever more powerful sequencing methods, analytical applications can be performed by tag-based approaches, where the focus shifts from 'sequencing power' to better means of data analysis and visualization for common users. Today Next Generation Sequence data require powerful bioinformatics expertise that has to be converted into easy-to-use data analysis tools. The book's intention is to give an overview on recently developed tag-based approaches along with means of their data analysis together with introductions to Next-Generation Sequencing Methods, protocols and user guides to be an entry for scientists to tag-based approaches for Next Generation Sequencing.

Rifat Afrin Sensitivity Analysis of Stock Market with Respect to Monetary Policy

Monetary policy is that part of the macroeconomics, which attempts to achieve a set of objectives that are expressed in terms of several macroeconomic variables such as inflation, real output, money supply, exchange rate or employment. As a result, any change in the monetary policy will have an effect on these variables. For instance, monetary policy actions such as changes in the central bank discount rate may have an indirect effect on these variables. Therefore, it has been said that as broader financial markets are quick to incorporate new information, a more direct and contiguous effect of changes in the monetary policy instruments may be identified using financial data. Hence, in order to identify the monetary policy mechanism transmission into the stock market, understanding the sensitivity of stock market with respect to monetary policy is very important. This book examines whether current economic activities or more specifically the monetary policy tools of Bangladesh and India can explain stock market returns in short run and long-run horizon by using a number of multivariate tests.

How to make decision when resources are limited? These questions appear when a positioning strategy should be chosen. The main goal of this research is to propose a positioning strategy for the UK translation agency in highly fragmented Russian translations services market. The analysis is divided into three main parts: integrated approach based on Hooley's six dimensions of differentiation, integrated approach based on Market-Attractiveness - Business Position Matrix, and descriptive analysis of online positioning. The methodology used contains both quantitative and qualitative element due to very limited data availability and in an effort to increase reliability of the results obtained. Also descriptive analysis of online based businesses is provided. Additional data was collected through publications, newspaper articles and experts' opinions.

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, grade: 100.00, , course: EMBC - Neoliberalism and Conservation, language: English, abstract: Neoliberalist economic policy is one of the main driving forces in world governance in the 21st Century. Unfortunately, its attributes (individual property rights, unrestrained competition, deregulation, privatisation, short-term profit, risk-propensity, lack of safeguards, globalisation) seem to be completely at odds with environmental sustainability. Neoliberal policy may be the major reason for the failure of governments to form proper environmental protection guarantees for the security of future generations. This is particularly apparent in the context of climate change, where corporate and environmental interests consistently clash, and fisheries, where the commercialization of species may threaten future food security. In this essay, I ask if it is possible to reconcile neoliberalism with marine conservation, with focus on fisheries management. I begin by describing failures to protect natural environments, and the particular characteristics of the marine realm and of neoliberalism that are of relevance in the conflict between economic and environmental interests. I go on to explain the interplay between these factors, and the effect of resulting policies on environmental sustainability. I consider the role of the valuation of natural capital as a major area of debate in terms of t...

This important new text introduces conservation criminology as the interdisciplinary study of environmental exploitation and risks at the intersection of human and natural systems. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the book enhances understanding of the various human and organizational behaviors that pose risks to the environment, humans, and drive conservation crime. As human population growth, global market economies, climate change, deforestation, and illegal exploitation of natural resources continue to increase, academic research from numerous disciplines is needed to address these challenges. Conservation Criminology promotes thinking about how unsustainable natural resources exploitation is a cause and a consequence of social conflict. Case studies profiled in the book demonstrate this cause and effect type situation, as well as innovative approaches for reducing risks to people and the environment. This text encourages readers to consider how humans behave in response to environmental risks and the various mechanisms that constitute effective and ineffective approaches to enforcement of wildlife crimes, including environmental and conservation policy. Case studies from the USA, Latin America, Africa, and Asia highlight corruption in conservation, global trade in electronic waste, illegal fishing, illegal logging, human-wildlife conflict, technology and space, water insecurity, wildlife disease, and wildlife poaching. Taken together, chapters expand the reader’s perspective and employ tools to understand and address environmental crimes and risks, and to provide novel empirical evidence for positive change. With established contributors providing interdisciplinary and global perspectives, this book establishes a foundation for the emerging field of conservation criminology.

This book also reviews the chain of approaches to estimate the long memory parameter. The long memory characteristics of the financial time series are widely studied and have implications for various economics and finance theories. The most important financial implication is related to the violation of the weak-form of market efficiency which encourages the traders, investors and portfolio managers to develop models for making predictions and to construct and implement speculative trading and investment strategies. In an efficient market, the price of an asset should follow a random walk process in which the price change is unaffected by ist lagged price changes and has no memory.

In recent years the cases of water shortages, pollution and flood/drought damages steadily increased in numbers. This development is caused by both a large population and a rapidly developing economy. Although China significantly improved its water and wastewater infrastructure, its water shortage problem is worsening year by year. The Chinese government tries to counter this misbalance and insistently pursues an environmentally sustainable development policy. Its countermeasures include management model reforms, Private-Sector-Participation (PSP) projects and the support of new technology development and application. According to the 11th Five-Year-Plan, more than 140 billion Euros will be spent on environmental projects and campaigns before 2010. These reforms have unleashed a wave of optimism in China‟s water market and created great market opportunities for investors. Significant amounts of new water infrastructures are to be built, and the operation and maintenance of all existing and newly built municipal water and wastewater treatment plants have been or will be transferred to authorized enterprises. However, these opportunities are not without risk. Investors are particularly skeptical abo...

Terence Kappeln The Impact of ECB Monetary Policy on Stock and Bond Market Liquidity. The Case of Germany

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 1,0, Vienna University of Economics and Business (Finance and Accounting), language: English, abstract: During the financial crisis and the following Eurozone crisis, liquidity in financial markets basically froze and became a problem for the real economy. Therefore, market liquidity became one of the major concerns of the ECB, which applied non-standard measures, e.g. irregular asset purchasing programmes. This paper sheds light on the impact of monetary policy on liquidity levels of the DAX 30 equity index and German 10-year government bonds. For the following analysis, the monetary policy impacts are estimated using the base money growth rate and EONIA rate, whereas the relative bid-ask spread is employed for measuring liquidity levels. The research method includes literature-based research about common market liquidity theories, a short timeline of important ECB monetary policy decisions, descriptive statistics on liquidity levels and monetary policy variables and a VAR analysis, including variables spreads, returns, volatilities, industrial production and inflation. The results indicate that a decrease (increase) in stock market liquidity or an increase (decrease) in bondmarket volatility lead to a decrease (increase) of EONIA. Furthermore, decreases (increases) in stock return or industrial production result in a decrease (increase) of EONIA. However, base money growth is positively correlated...

Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 3.5, Makerere University (College of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences), course: Master of Science in Agribusiness Management, language: English, abstract: It is crucial that formulation of market enhancing policies to improve performance hinges on a better understanding of the local market functioning. Comprehensive market performance is better understood by studying the extent of spatial market integration which in turn is affected by communication factors like telephony growth and extension services within the marketing system. Extension services are important in influencing levels of production and dissemination of trade information of both the inputs to and output from the enterprise. Unfortunately very little was known about how rice price transmission takes place. Given the importance of rice (as a food security crop & source of income) to the rural poor, many organizations have promoted it among rural farmers for improving their welfare, it was imperative that its price movements is studied to inform policy makers & implementers on the status of its spatial market integration. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial market integration of rice markets under improving communication infrastructure particularly extension services (NAADS program) and telecommunication industry growth. This study specifically evaluated the degree of spatial market integratio...

Edward Anomanyo Win by Integrating Solid Waste Management with Bioreactor Treatment

In a lot of communities in developing countries and in Accra Ghana, for that matter, solid waste management is characterized by single method approaches such as collect-and-dump. Lesser social acceptability of dump sites and inadequate operational funding often lead to collapse of these management systems. Solid waste quantities and composition in such communities present an opportunity to plan and operate management strategies that address social, economic and environmental impacts of the waste. Integrating strategies as collection and sorting for recycling, stakeholder (private investors, policy makers/management and the public) involvement and bioreactor treatment will yield optimum benefits to operational funds, clean environment and to society; a win-win-win scenario that must be appealing to policy makers and investors.

Monika Roth Influence of European Integration on the Bargaining Power of German Trade Unions

Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich BWL - Wirtschaftspolitik, Freie Universität Berlin (Otto Suhr Institut - Politikwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Politikwissenschaft, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: German trade unions' influence in industrial relations at the national level is curbed by the side effects of European integration. Supranationalization implies the transfer of regulatory power from the national to the supranational level. In the various policy areas, integration and supranationalization proceed at different speeds with regard to scope and level. This also applies to the neighboring policy areas of economic and labor policy. However, due to the overlap of these two policy areas, the asymmetrical integration of economic policy vis-a-vis labor policy leads to shifts in the German collective bargaining system, thus circumscribing the scope of German trade unions' action. More specifically, sectoral asymmetry leads to asymmetric political localization of the policy areas: Regulations in the economy are mainly taken at the EU level, whereas labor and social affairs remain national competences. Furthermore, the insertion of a supra-national layer is accompanied by a policy-theoretical change of the highest governmental and judicial authority from a hitherto (social-democratic) market-correcting consensus to a now market-making approach. This shift causes respective shifts at the national level as well. Additionally, the European Court of Justice possesses ...

Oyuntuya Shagdarsuren Tackling Isolation in Rural Mongolia

Mongolia is an isolated country with a large territory and a small population. Population density of an average of 1.5 persons per square kilometre makes economic growth, human development and environmental sustainability a challenge especially in rural areas. Geographic and social isolation affect rural communities both politically and economically. Isolation results in "information hunger" in rural Mongolia and contributes to poverty growing after the country's transition to market economy in 1990. This work explores the opportunity of using information and communication technologies (ICTs) to address isolation and the lack of information in rural Mongolia. The methodology of the research is based on literature review; qualitative and quantitative evidences are drawn from literature, published and unpublished reports, policy papers as well as internet research. This book is intended for students, researchers and professionals in agriculture and rural development.

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: 1,0, Technical University of Munich, language: English, abstract: This study investigates the impact of the recent US patent policy weakening around the America Invents Act, analyzing the US market for patent transactions. In an investigation of transactions derived from the USPTO's Patent Assignment Database, we examine patent transfers between companies from 1995 until September 2015. Due to declining acquisitions, but increasing sales of patents conducted by patent trolls after 2012, our findings suggest that the business of patent trolls largely suffered from recent policy measures. Furthermore, we find that large patent trolls have changed their strategy towards splitting risk, as they recently tend to distribute their patent portfolio across different shell companies. However, we are unable to identify a decline concerning the activity of firms on the market for patent transactions, due to the weakening of patent protection. We ascribe the consistent level of participation on the market to a redistribution of intellectual property rights after the policy changes and to purchases motivated by speculations on a further policy reversal. Additionally, we observe an unexpected increase in patent sales to non-US companies in 2014 and 2015, as the slight decrease in patent purchases by other non-US companies is overcompensated by a growing number of transactions to Asian ...

Conducting “policy relevant” research remains elusive yet important since evidence-based policymaking results in better public policy decisions. But how can this be done? What are some promising practices to help make academic scholarship more policy relevant? This monograph provides strategies that—when addressed—should improve the chances of a study becoming relevant to policy audiences. It provides: practical examples, theoretical perspectives, discussions of key stakeholders, and promising research strategies for framing work in policy relevant ways. By being more intentional about the policy relevance of our work and connecting research with emerging policy debates, we can increase the likelihood that future policy solutions will be evidence-based and informed by the most recent and rigorous research in our field. This the 2nd issue of the 41st volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

The drive towards environmentally friendly buildings and infrastructure has led to a growing interest in providing design solutions underpinned by the core principles of sustainability to balance economic, social and environmental factors. Design Economics for the Built Environment: Impact of sustainability on project evaluation presents new directions, reflecting the need to recognise the impact of climate change and the importance of sustainability in project evaluation. The aim is to provide a new approach to understanding design economics in the context of the changing policy environment, legislative and regulatory framework, and increasing economic, environmental and social pressure as result of the sustainability agenda. The book follows a structured approach from theories and principles in the earlier chapters, to the practical applications and emerging techniques focusing on value and social, economic and environmental considerations in making design decisions. It starts with the policy context, building on various theories and principles such as, capital cost, value of design and resource-based theories, the new rules of measurement (NRM) to explore cost planning, the relationship between height and costs, key socio-economic and environmental variables for design appraisal, eco-cost/value ratio (EVR), whole life theory and the treatment of carbon emission as external costs, productivity and efficiency, fiscal drivers and legal framework for carbon reduction, procurement and allocation of risks in contracts. Case studies, practical examples and frameworks throughout reinforce theories and principles and relate them to current practice. The book is essential reading for postgraduate students in architecture, building and quantity surveying and is also a valuable resource for academics, consultants and policy-makers in the built environment.

Sophia Kühnlenz Economic Bubbles. A Story of New Eras, Emotional Contagion and Structural Support

Economic bubbles go hand in hand with financial inventions, financial liberalization and excess leverage. Frequently these bubbles are fueled by the overoptimistic outlook not only of the so-called experts or gurus but also by the extremely positive perception of the general public. Great hikes in asset and commodity markets are believed to be a result of the new economy that has been created. Historical levels of markets and where the level of fundamentals should really be are either unknown or completely ignored. Partially one could account this to the short financial memory of market participants. Partially the abstract nature of the markets and the complexity of financial products themselves may be the reason. This paper tries to identify regularities defining economic bubbles concentrating on the most recent ones. Different approaches in explaining market movements will be discussed. Further, not only structural but especially psychological factors which may cause the emergence, the inflation and the implosion of economic bubbles are considered. Already existing agent based models, policy responses and possible future policy measures are analyzed and evaluated.
