This book discusses market power of cooperatives in Ethiopia and investigates the factors that influence market power. A standard analytical tool such as Herfindahl index, the commonly used competition assessment tool, is employed to analyze the degree of market concentration within the defined marketplace. The share of cooperatives is significantly low indicating that the market is dominated by non cooperative firms. The book comprises six chapters. The first chapter dovetails market power of cooperatives; second chapter deals with empirical studies on market power and conceptual framework; the methodological approach is discussed in the third chapter. Chapter four is devoted for analyzing the market power of cooperatives; factors explaining market power of cooperatives is analyzed in the fifth chapter using binary dependent logistic regression model; and in final chapter major findings, conclusion and recommendations for policy implications are offered.

Providing access to information help farmers to increase their agricultural productivity and put them in a favorable market position in relation to other actors. Hence primary sources of information such as agricultural extension workers should be updated with agricultural and market information, how to collect and disseminate accurate and timely information to the farmers. This could be done through upgrading their skill or on job training by agricultural offices or other bodies working on agriculture and market information dissemination. As most farmers who are selling their produce to cooperatives in primary market get more price benefit than those who sale to small traders, the cooperatives should attract and bring them to the membership through price incentives. There should be a coordinated way of improving technological infrastructure (both telecommunication network and Electricity) between Ethio telecom and Electric power corporation in order to solve network and power disruption so that farmer can adopt and get access to the ICT.

Cooperatives are the aggregates of economic units, such as farms. The cooperative is neither a horizontal integration of its member-farms nor a vertical integration between member-farms and the cooperative, but rather a third mode of organizing coordination. Cooperatives are owned, controlled, financed, and used by members for mutual benefits, with service at cost and proportionality being two basic principles. Farmers organize marketing cooperatives to access markets, exercise countervailing power vis-àvis other market participants, promote competition, and thus enhance market efficiency. Cooperation as practiced by dairy farmers in marketing milk is an enduring business model that is in full accord with the economic theory of what cooperatives are and what cooperatives do. Members supply equity capital needed for the cooperative to carry out its core business of marketing members' milk. Capital financing, in general, is not a contentious issue for dairy cooperatives.

Revision with unchanged content. Companies are competing in fast changing markets, characterised by high levels of variety and competition. Therefore they need two capabilities: the capability to understand their markets in terms of market drivers and market trends; and secondly the capability of a company and its supply chain to respond in a timely yet efficient manner. Managing such supply chains will be difficult without some degree of process integration and collaboration between supply chain partners. A first step is to know their own and that of their suppliers' performance capability. Michael Seitz's work was about constructing a performance measurement tool to identify the operational performance between adjacent members of a supply chain. The SCOR model was used as the basis of the Performance Measurement System. This was extended to include a Collaborative Index, an additional measurement which could assess the levels of supply chain integration and collaboration, and a Stability Index, which was developed to measure the robustness of the evaluated supply chain. This book is interesting for students and decision makers working in the area of supply chain who want to gain a deeper knowledge about measuring supply chain performance.

The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicated that members and non-members have significant difference on income and livelihood. Awareness of the farmers on the role of seed, selling price of seed potato, cost of production, availability of marketing infrastructures and facilities, access to extension service, distance from market, access to credit, farm size, labor force, perceptions about seed marketing, membership in cooperatives, number of oxen owned and income affects positively the participation in seed potato production and marketing except distance from market and cost of production. Twelve channels were identified wide variable routes of flow with in the value chain. But the way of flow of the channels differ from farmer to farmer and between members and non-members of the cooperative. Therefore, this book is crucial for agricultural marketing and cooperative managers to fill knowledge gap on value chain of seed potato in Ethiopia.

From a supply chain perspective, often big differences exist between global raw material suppliers' approaches to supply their respective local markets. The progressing complexity of large centrally managed global supply networks and their often-unknown upstream ramifications increase the likelihood of undetected bottlenecks and inefficiencies. It is therefore necessary, to develop an approach to strategically master the upstream complexity of such networks from a holistic perspective, in order to align regional competitive priorities and supply chain structures. The research is set in the context of polyamide engineering thermoplastics in the automotive industry. Based on an initial industry analysis and a literature review, a conceptual framework is developed. The framework is matched with existing empirical and theoretical literature, as well as multiple case study analyses in the relevant supply market and a centrally managed global supply network. As a result, strategic group theory is transferred into the supply network management context, to allow for the consideration of upstream supply chain structures in the category strategy development process. The proposed approach introduces strategic groups of supply chains as a segmentation criterion for complex global supply networks, which enables the network-wide alignment of competitive priorities, flexibility requirements, and partnerships with suppliers. Supply chain-based category strategies can effectively reduce th...

In today's global business environment, the intense competition, the changing and uncertain conditions, and the increasing customer's requirements are challenges for the companies' operational efficiency and profitability. In this context, companies highlight the importance of supply chain design and its holistic understanding in order to achieve and sustain competitive strengths. This book analyses supply chains as complex systems, whose performance is characterized by their structural configuration and emergent behaviour. The author analyses the supply chain structure and behaviour within the scope of complexity science. He focuses on supply chain complexity by means of a literature review and an empirical research, which give insights into the impact of complexity on supply chain performance. Moreover, within this book the supply chain is modelled as a complex system by considering the non-linear relationships of its geo-positioned elements. Finally, an agent based model is developed for the generic supply chain simulation, which allows assessing the impact of complexity on supply chain performance and characterizing the behaviour of supply chain designs. The materials presented in this book contribute to the understanding and management of supply chain complexity. This work complements existing complexity frameworks with a holistic analysis of complexity's impact on the performance of supply chain participants and their network. The findings of this work a...

The Politics of Global Supply Chains analyses the changing politics of power and distribution within contemporary global supply chains. Drawing on over 300 interviews with farmers, workers, activists, businesses and government officials in garment and coffee sector supply chains, the book shows how the increased involvement of non-state actors in supply chain governance is re-shaping established patterns of global political power, responsibility and accountability. These emerging supply chain governance systems are shown to be multi-layered and politically contested, as transnational governance schemes interact with traditional state governance arrangements in both complementary and conflicting ways. The book’s analysis of changes to the relationship between state and non-state actors within transnational governance processes will be of particular interest to scholars and students of globalisation, global governance and regulation. The Politics of Global Supply Chains also suggests some practical ways by which the effectiveness and accountability of supply chain governance could be strengthened, which will interest both scholars and practitioners in fields of global business regulation and corporate social responsibility. Conclusions are relevant to the business and civil society actors who participate directly in non-state governance schemes, and to state regulators whose distinctive governance capacities could play a much greater role than at present in supporting transnational, non-state governance processes.

Globalization no longer means simply finding low-cost countries for sourcing, but has involved to include the opportunity for growth in Asia's emerging domestic markets, specifically China. This development results in extended, truly global supply chains and thus places a higher pressure on working capital. Therefore, several definitions of Supply Chain Management already encompass financial aspects and demand a more integrated consideration of material, information, and financial flows within supply chains. However, more precise theory on "Supply Chain Financing" is understudied and initial implementation of related solutions in industry has only gained momentum during and after the economic and financial crises of 2008 and 2009.In contrast to traditional financial instruments for supply chains - for instance trade finance products which have been around for more than a century - Supply Chain Financing leverages larger and influential members of supply chains. These firms might, for instance, provide easier and cheaper access to financing for smaller supply chain members supporting their profitability through renegotiated and reduced purchasing prices. Echoing recent research results on supply chain risk management, other firms may prefer to take on a supply chain perspective and work on creating agile and resilient supply chains. In this context, Supply Chain Financing can be employed to ensure liquidity for crucial upstream and downstream supply chain partners ...

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 80.00, Louvain School of Management, language: English, abstract: This paper addresses the question of how the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), defined as the industrial aspect of the fourth industrial revolution, will impact supply chain management (SCM) decisions. With this goal in mind, we first describe the conceptual and historical approaches of both the industry and supply chain management. The question of the legitimacy of a new industrial revolution is answered positively and the supply chain management discipline is organised in a flow-based model of ten managerial categories. A thorough cross-field literature analysis delivers the main changes, opportunities and challenges that the upcoming IIoT will bring to supply chains. A neutral approach is favoured and the generally optimistic literature regarding the IIoT is questioned. Cyber-physical systems will indeed redefine the way we provide goods and services to customers and therefore, the way entire supply chains are managed, strategically and operationally. More information, connectivity and intelligence will optimise operations to enable mass customisation and faster than ever times-to-market. Those changes will gradually transform supply chains into smart supply ecosystems, where inter-company boundaries will fade, and the nature of cooperation will evolve. Nonetheless, there is still a long way t...

During the past years, the agricultural sector in Bulgaria entered an important stage. The country is a member of the EU. This fact speeding up the adoption and application of the different CAP regulations. In its way of accession to the EU, the country becomes faced with the challenge to increase the effectiveness and competitive power of agricultural production. Most part of the existing agricultural farms are small-sized. They lack sufficient market information, good management and access to markets and credits. The main problems is how the agricultural producers can better themselves in the conditions of insufficient financial resources and limited access to the market. One possibility to reach this goal is to substitute the limited production factors for ones that are more accessible. Such relatively easily accessible factor is the people to join together in pursuing their common objectives. This can be achieved through establishment of organizations of agricultural producers, which however requires a certain level of social capital. Using case studies from Bulgarian agricultural organizations the author highlights key factors affecting producer organizations' success.

Based on this analysis, the auction mechanism is derived for task allocation in the supply chain. The proposed framework for the auction mechanism includes major paradigms of envy-free solutions.

Underwriting, pricing and transferring agricultural risks is complex and requires a solid understanding of the production system, exposure, perils and the most suitable products, which vastly differ among developed and developing markets. In the last decade, new insurance schemes in emerging agricultural markets have greatly contributed to the large growth of the industry from a premium volume of US$10.1 billion (2006) to US$30.7 billion (2017). This growth is bound to continue as insurance penetration and exposure increase and new schemes are being developed. Agricultural (re)insurance has become a cornerstone of sovereign disaster risk financing frameworks. Agricultural Risk Transfer introduces the main concepts of agricultural (re)insurance and capital market risk transfer that are discussed through industry case studies. It also discusses best industry practices for all main insurance products for crop, livestock, aquaculture and forestry risks including risk assessment, underwriting, pricing, modelling and loss adjustment. Describes agricultural production risks and risk management approaches Covers risk transfer of production and financial risks through insurance and financial instruments Introduces modelling concepts for the main perils and key data sources that support risk transfer through indemnity- and index-based products Describes risk pricing and underwriting approaches for crop, livestock, aquaculture and forestry exposure in developed and developing agricultural systems Become familiar with risk transfer concepts to reinsurance and capital markets Get to know the current market landscape and main risk transfer products for individual producers, agribusinesses and governments through theory and comprehensive industry case studies Through Agricultural Risk Transfer, you’ll gain a holistic view of agricultural (re)insurance and capital market solutions which will support better underwriting, more structured product development and improved risk transfer.

Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Kempten, language: English, abstract: The goal of this master thesis is to provide an analysis of existing supply chain performance measurement systems as well as an evaluation of their suitability for the electronics manufacturing industry. Furthermore, the hypothesis that the implementation of a supply chain performance measurement system in cooperation with supply chain partners will lead to sustainable competitive advantages within the supply chain is going to be proven. As competitiveness in future industry will be increasingly "supply chain vs. supply chain", rather than "firm vs. firm", holistic performance measurement systems become more and more relevant to global operating companies (Hult, 2008, p.538). Although the efficient management of global supply chain networks already has the potential to create competitive advantages, most industrial companies still focus on production efficiency and selective optimization that disable fast adaption to changing customer requirements. In increasingly saturated markets a technology-driven competitive advantage is often quickly compensated by low-cost countries. In contrast high service quality established by efficient logistics processes can hardly be adopted in short time (Richert, 2006, p.44). Especially in the areas of fast moving consumer goods and the electro...

The heightened intensity of global competition has increased the necessity of manufacturing and distribution organizations to continuously improve production, product quality, cost, and delivery. Supply chain professionals must be knowledgeable about the relevance of supply chain concepts-adapt supply chain to customer needs, customize logistics networks, align demand planning across the entire supply chain, and differentiate products close to customers. The goal of The Global Supply Chain and Risk Management is to assist in meeting these challenges as to the education of many supply chain practitioners, the implementation of formal supply chain contingency and control systems and the continued edification in recent global developments for all those working in the field. It is written for two groups, those who are preparing for a career in supply chain and for those seeking to improve their proficiency. The book will teach the best practices, high-tech and analytical solutions for the entire global supply chain-customer service to inventory planning to transportation to warehousing.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,2, European School of Business Reutlingen (Business Adminstration), language: English, abstract: The environmental surroundings of most companies have changed radically in recent years. Especially the competitive pressure has risen substantially over the past decades, fuelled by an increased globalization of markets and supply chains. In order to continuously satisfy consumer needs in a timely manner, organizations have to focus on performance and efficiency improvement measures. In terms of supply chain management, performance includes the three dimensions efficiency, effectiveness and flexibility which have to be dealt with on an equal basis. One mean to improve supply chain performance is the linkage between various IT applications involved in the whole supply chain. These efforts and trends are treated under the term electronic supply chain management (E-SCM). There are three major critical success factors for the successful operation of an electronic supply chain. These can be clustered into decision motivation (e.g. a shared vision and a strong motivation), implementation process (e.g. the tight integration of inter-organizational information systems and the re-engineering of inter-organizational business processes) and infrastructure conditions (e.g. agreement upon a shared industry standard). There are numerous benefits of an E-SCM implementati...

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: Distinction, University of Manchester (Manchester Business School), language: English, abstract: Since 1980's the Japanese car manufacturing industry has been celebrated as the most efficient car industry in the world regarding production systems and processes. However, on 16 July 2007 this efficiency of the entire Japanese automotive industry was challenged when an earthquake hit the Chuetsu region in Japan and decimated a small but critical portion of its supply chain. Riken Corp., a supplier of automobile engine components such as piston rings, was this critical sup-ply chain bit. Its failure to operate after the event caused a chain reaction of plant closures of the main eight Japanese car manufacturers and parallelised nearly 70 per cent of the world biggest auto production industry. The underlying qualitative study adopts some conceptual supply chain resilience management models available in the academic literature as theoretical lenses to analyze the Riken Corp. case. The main argument of this research paper is that while the Japanese automotive supply chain is capable of delivering an efficient and effective response to and recovery from an interruption, it, however, lacks the capability of event readiness, which is the active resilience preparation for a supply chain disruption.

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Energy Sciences, grade: 1,7, The FOM University of Applied Sciences, Hamburg, course: Economics, language: English, abstract: Worldwide nuclear power exerts strong pressure on the economic factor of supply and demand. Nuclear power is a cheap and traditional form of energy. Therefore, there is a large international supply with a strong demand for it. Nevertheless, there are also big risks in the production of nuclear power. Nuclear meltdowns with far-reaching consequences have occurred in the past, e.g. the well-known meltdown at Chernobyl in 1986 and the newest disturbance at the Fukushima nuclear power station in Japan in 2011. These have provoked a major global, public discussion on the future energy supply from nuclear power stations. In Germany, 17 nuclear power stations supply most households and companies with energy, and 7 of the oldest nuclear power stations are temporarily recaptured from the electrical network. An important consideration regarding the economical shutdowns of nuclear power stations in Germany dominates public workaday life. The alternatives are renewable energies. However, they supply only a small amount of energy. If there is a consideration to shut down nuclear power in Germany, it is significant to do so in an economical manner.

The threat of this global phenomenon is not only apparent from the difficulties faced by all food supply chain actors, but is also felt acutely by households dependent on semi-subsistence agriculture. As evidenced by numerous studies conducted by the academic community, governmental and non-governmental organisations, climate change and climate variability will have disastrous effects on entire food supply chains across the world. This edited volume looks to address: How vulnerable are food supply chain actors to climate change and climatic variability? What adaptation strategies are they adopting? How is the resilience of food supply chains being supported? Are they being financed and/or supported by international organizations to cope with climate change? And what governmental support are they receiving to help cope with climate change? This book is an essential resource for students, lecturers, researchers, agribusinesses, marketing firms, agricultural institutions, climate change adaptation institutions, policymakers and many others with an interest in agricultu...

Despite the existence of the concept of Supply Chain for decades, very little is known about how companies come together and which factors they take into consideration when selecting their business partners. Furthermore, when operating in the Supply Chain, companies focus more on efficiently utilizing company resources than effectively satisfying customers’ needs. The aim of this research was to test and scrutinize the factors that suppliers, manufacturers and distributors/retailers consider most important in the decision processes of choosing partners in a Supply Chain. It investigated if Focal Companies in each of these categories (suppliers, manufacturers and retailers) take the same factors into consideration and identified metrics which companies focus on, in measuring the performance of a Supply Chain in terms of effectiveness and efficiency of Supply Chain processes. A webmail questionnaire was developed and administered to 525 companies within the forestry, manufacturing and retail industries in Sweden, of which 101 were answered giving a response rate of 19.2%. The empirical findings have been analyzed in comparison with existing theories and conclusions reached.
