Since the 1970's, microprocessor-based digital platforms have been riding Moore's law, allowing for doubling of density for the same area roughly every two years. However, whereas microprocessor fabrication has focused on increasing instruction execution rate, memory fabrication technologies have focused primarily on an increase in capacity with negligible increase in speed. This divergent trend in performance between the processors and memory has led to a phenomenon referred to as the "Memory Wall."To overcome the memory wall, designers have resorted to a hierarchy of cache memory levels, which rely on the principal of memory access locality to reduce the observed memory access time and the performance gap between processors and memory. Unfortunately, important workload classes exhibit adverse memory access patterns that baffle the simple policies built into modern cache hierarchies to move instructions and data across cache levels. As such, processors often spend much time idling upon a demand fetch of memory blocks that miss in higher cache levels. Prefetching-predicting future memory accesses and issuing requests for the corresponding memory blocks in advance of explicit accesses-is an effective approach to hide memory access latency. Kinematic structural studies play an important role in the design of mechanisms. These studies consider only the interconnectivity pattern of the individual links and hence are unaffected by the changes in the geometric properties of the mechanisms. This work focus on the three classical problems in this area: synthesis of all non-isomorphic kinematic mechanisms; detection of all non-isomorphic pairs of mechanisms; and, classification of kinematic mechanisms based on type of mobility. This work illustrates the successful use of techniques from graph theory and combinatorial optimization to efficiently solve these classical structural kinematic problems. A polynomial-time algorithm for degeneracy testing along with efficient algorithms to synthesize all non-isomorphic planar kinematic mechanisms are presented.

This study explores, describes and analyzes the various characteristics of interproject learning mechanisms and project competencies found in a sample of consulting firms in Sweden. The study focuses on the perceived importance of different interproject learning mechanisms and their perceived impact in developing project competencies in consulting firms. The study interrogates the 'perceptions' of 'key' informed project management practitioners, who have experience of managing projects. Their perceptions about project activities in their respective firms helped capture a 'managerial' and provide an 'expert' view. The study find that the most highly ranked and valued interproject learning mechanisms involved some degree of face-to-face interactions. Learning mechanisms that enable the capture, storage and transfer of explicit knowledge, though important, were not ranked highly in importance as person-to- person communication. The difference might be due to the efficient way the latter mechanisms have in transferring socially embedded and context-dependant tacit knowledge, which comprise a large part of knowledge applied in projects.

Improving tolerance to heat stress is a major challenge in many crops, especially C3 crops, given the threat of recent global warming. While significant achievements have been made on understanding the molecular and physiological mechanisms to short-term exposure to high temperature, the physiological mechanisms of summer tolerance in fields, which are characterized by prolonged exposure to high temperature stress, are not still well understood. In this study, six experiments were conducted to clarify the physiological mechanisms of tolerance to high temperature stress by comparing between genotypes, populations and different species including C3 and C4 photosynthetic types. Overall, although the complexity of heat tolerance was revealed by the involvement of various mechanisms such as suppression of ROS, scavenging of toxic ROS, and leaf functions, this study definitively showed that the oxidative stress resulting from the excessive production of ROS is the main cause of damages under heat stress.

Performance requirement for an electrical switch is stringent. The operating mechanism mostly decides the performance. However, design of such mechanisms, which involve discontinuous motions, is not much addressed in the literature. The present work proposes a systematic procedure to design and analyze toggle based switching mechanisms. For the ab initio design of double toggle switching mechanisms, necessary structural criteria for a mechanism to exhibit double toggle phenomenon have been derived and verified. It is established that any double toggle mechanism cannot be used directly as a switching mechanism unless some necessary kinematic criteria are followed. With the help of these criteria a few switching mechanisms are constructed and their behaviours are examined through simulations. Finally, a novel double toggle switch is constructed with consideration of mass and geometric shape of the links. A systematic simulation based study has been performed to identify the influence of different kinematic and dynamic parameters on the functionality of a double toggle switching mechanism.

First, the theoretical background of important terms in this field is given to gain a common understanding, which is necessary for classification as well as results. In this thesis, platforms are defined as products and services, which bring together user groups and enable transactions between the groups by providing infrastructure to do so. Second, literature dealing with this field of study is processed to provide a comprehensive and transparent overview about current research, including the platform type, dependent variables, and findings. Input, output, process, clan, self-control, as well as open and closed platforms, rules & values and boundary resources are identified as the most relevant control mechanisms. Thereby the first research question what types of control mechanisms are discussed in literature, is answered. The findings then are analyzed for these different types of control to address the remaining research questions how control mechanisms effect platforms and when this is useful. It can be pointed out that most mechanisms go along with advantages and disadvantages, as theory suggests.
