This study explores the personal qualities, best practices and challenges commonly possessed and faced by those professionals adjudged as Metrobank Outstanding Teachers in Iloilo, Philippines. The idea about an exceptional teacher that is developed out of the gathered and analyzed data would be expected to provide simple cues and standards for other Filipino teachers who similarly dream of becoming one of them. Nevertheless, the portrayal of the characteristics and cases of the five select teachers does not intend to project a notion that only few are capable and are entitled to be exemplary in the teaching profession. The authors hoped that somehow this presentation of cases will inspire other teachers to strive more and prove that indeed teaching is the noblest profession.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: South Asia, grade: A+, , language: English, abstract: This paper analyzes the remittances and democratization nexus, using the Republic of the Philippines as a case study. The onset of this paper is a riddle. A number of scholars stress the positive impact of remittances on a society and its democratization. The Philippines has successfully sought to gain more remittances through a state driven labor export scheme and has been for many years among the top receiving countries in the world. Despite those conditions deemed propitious to democratization, the Philippines show many democracy deficits. Several scholars have claimed that remittances impact positively on democratization. However, a range of democratization indicators for the Philippines, belie this assertion. This paper delves into various aspects of the democratization, migration and remittance dynamics. Firstly, it examines the scholarly work on remittances (always understood in a wider sense, as comprising social and financial remittances) and the democratization history in the Philippines. Secondly, it argues the methodology used for this paper. Thirdly, it evaluates and describes a selected number of particularities of the Philippine democratic system and its labor export scheme. It interprets the impact of remittances on democratization in the Philippines before drawing conclusions.TABLE OF CONTENTSIntroduction 5Rese...

A volume in Studies in the Philosophy of EducationSeries Editor: John E. Petrovic, The University of AlabamaThere is a story going around about the public schools and the people who teach in them-a story about how awful our nation's teachers are and why we should blame teachers forthe poor state of our public schools. But is the story about teachers right or fair? Why do somany people point fingers at teachers and seem to resent them so much?Blame Teachers: The Emotional Reasons for Educational Reform examines why many people blame teachers forwhat they understand to be the poor state of our schools. Blame comes easily to many people when they read aboutpoor student performance and how "protected" teachers are by teachers' unions and tenure policies. And withblame comes resentment, and with resentment comes demands for all kinds of educational reform-calls for morestandardized testing, merit pay, charter schools, and all the rest. And we expect teachers to like and accept all thereforms being proposed.Conceiving educational reform out of blame and resentment aimed at teachers does no good for teachers, students, orschools. Blame Teachers outlines many of the strange and unacceptableassumptions about teaching and the purposes of education contained in theseeducational reforms. Intended for teachers, teacher education students, policymakersand the larger public, Blame Teachers suggests much better and moreproductive conversations we can have with teachers-conver...

Filipino Americans have a long and rich history with and within the United States, and they are currently thesecond largest Asian group in the country. However, very little is known about how their historical andcontemporary relationship with America may shape their psychological experiences. The most insidiouspsychological consequence of their historical and contemporary experiences is colonial mentality orinternalized oppression. Some common manifestations of this phenomenon are described below:•Skin-whitening products are used often by Filipinos in the Philippines to make their skins lighter. Skinwhitening clinics and businesses are popular in the Philippines as well. The "beautiful" people such as actorsand other celebrities endorse these skin-whitening procedures. How can teachers make sure that all students gain the reading skills they need to be successful in school and in life? In this book, Karen Tankersley describes the six foundational "threads" that students need to study in order to become effective readers: phonemic awareness, phonics and decoding, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and higher-order processing. For each area, the author explains how students acquire the reading skills they need and offers a series of skill-building strategies and activities that teachers can use in the classroom. Although reading is perhaps most intensely taught in the kindergarten and 1st-grade classrooms, Tankersley emphasizes that helping students become lifelong readers is a task for all teachers, including content-area teachers in middle and high schools. The Threads of Reading addresses key questions about literacy, such as*What makes a difference in reading achievement?*How much reading time is enough?*How can teachers use writing to build reading skills?*How can teachers help students make meaning from their reading? The strategies in this book address many situations, from individual instruction to small- or large-group instruction, from kindergarten to high school. Teachers will appreciate the multitude of activities provided, and administrators will learn to better evaluate the reading programs in place in their districts and schools. In Spirit-filled Protestantism, Luther Oconer shows how holiness- and Pentecost-themed revival meetings called culto Pentecostal helped form the development of Methodism in the Philippines. He focuses on these revival meetings, their theological content, and the spiritual culture they helped perpetuate. The resulting narrative provides a rich rendering of both male and female American Methodist missionaries, their Filipino counterparts, and their followers that both celebrates and critiques them. Oconer also offers a unique perspective on Philippine Protestantism, which has often been dismissed for being too intellectual and formal. He defies the stereotype by demonstrating how culto Pentecostal revivals, with their emphasis on holiness and the baptism of the Holy Spirit, made Methodism the most innovative and successful of all Protestant denominations in the country prior to the Second World War. Accordingly, Oconer's treatment explains why Methodism provided a fertile seedbed for the emergence of the Manila Healing Revival and, consequently, the rise of Pentecostalism in the Philippines in the 1950s. Teachers are called nation builders in every country and in every society. The role of teachers is of great importance. It is left to the teachers to inculcate personality characteristics, right values - the values of good citizenship producing law abiding and nation loving citizens. India has made considerable progress in school education since independence with reference to overall literacy, infrastructure and universal access and enrolment in schools. Two major developments in the recent years form the background to the present reform in teacher education - the political recognition of Universalization of Elementary Education (UEE) as a legitimate demand and the state commitment towards UEE in the form of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. The country has to address the need of supplying well qualified and professionally trained teachers in larger numbers in the coming years. At the same time, the demand for quality secondary education is steadily increasing. It is recommended that the aim should be to reach universal secondary education within a maximum of ten years. Given the problems of inadequate quality in most secondary schools due to poor infrastructure and insufficient and poorly equipped teachers, the need for addressing the professional education of secondary teachers acquires great importance. The education of teachers should be such that teachers should set an example and provide for their pupils the ideal of the citizens who is co...

The topic of error correction in the second language (L2) classroom tends to spark controversy among both language teachers and learners. Teachers may have very strong views about error correction, based on their own previous L2 learning experiences, or they may be more ambivalent. However, learners may have a totally different view from their teachers. Thus learners' and teachers' perspectives about error correction are essential in order to investigate the best reaction to students' error. In a bid to address this issue, this study was conducted to investigate whether the learners' and teachers' perspectives about error correction in speaking with regard to language proficiency level and academic degree differ or not. Methodologically, this study is based on the requirements of quantitative research paradigm. To this end, a sample of 83 teachers and 93 learners attempted a 22-item questionnaire. The findings revealed controversies over the teachers' and learners' perspectives; suggesting more attention to these controversies between teachers' and learners' opinion about error correction and to learners' preferences for error correction based on their language proficiency level.

It also picks up on the nuanced and challenging nature of the teaching and learning process and ultimately provides a way forward for student teachers professional development. The book also recommends a thorough interrogation and restructuring of teacher education courses in most universities and admonished stake holders to take into consideration the challenges student teachers go through when experiencing teachers' professional identity to improve teacher education.

How can we help new teachers succeed in the classroom? Given high attrition rates and increasing teacher shortages, attracting new teachers and helping them thrive are among the most important challenges that schools face.A Better Beginning: Supporting and Mentoring New Teachers lays out the fundamentals for helping new teachers succeed in the schools of the next century: What Do New Teachers Need?; Creating an Induction Program; Making Mentoring Meaningful; Planning Comprehensive Teacher Support; Improving Instruction and Communication; and Listening to Teachers. Each section features thoughtful chapters from educational leaders. With her colleagues, Sharon Feiman-Nemser, Professor of Teacher Education at Michigan State University, outlines how best to develop professionals rather than simply induct new teachers into the profession. Ellen Moir, from the New Teacher Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz, explains the stages that first-year teachers typically undergo. And English teacher Lisa Renard shows how new teachers can take a positive, proactive approach to their early professional years. The anthology offers views and perspectives of those whose job descriptions include the phrase mentor of new teachers. From how to coach for competency to how to maintain commitment and enthusiasm, A Better Beginning: Supporting and Mentoring New Teachers provides veteran and new teachers fresh insights into best practices and programs for tomorrow's teachers.

The issue of performance management has not been a popular concept on schools. It seems that performance appraisal or evaluations are widely used terms in assessing the performance of teachers. However, these days the issue of performance management that focuses mainly on the professional development of teachers becomes agenda in most education system. However, limited academic literature exists on how to best-practiced performance management of teachers.Various approaches of performance measurement of teachers have been used and most of them emphasized on controlling mechanisms. Issues like feedback, motivation and communications with teachers in performance appraisal are not areas of attention. This book, therefore, provides distinctly different approaches of Performance evaluation that mainly emphasize on developing the performance of teachers rather than controlling. As a result, five interrelated dimensions of performance management are analyzed. The analysis should help shade some light on the performance management of teachers in Ethiopia, and should be especially useful to professional in education fields, or anyone else who may be interested in school affairs.

The prevailing technology in the 21st century has surrounded the world and this neo-developing technology has partly begun to subjugate the human life. In this regard it sometimes creates a probing question in a human of who the controller is or who the controlled is. Inevitably technology in our lives contains worries about the future. Will technology supersede the teachers in future? how the different levels of technology usage affect teachers; where the line should be drawn for the usage of technology in order to understand whether technology has started to control teachers and how teachers can fight for their freedom of teaching. These are the chief question that we need to ask ourselves.

Since 2005 the Ministry of Education in Jamaica prohibited the use of corporal punishment (CP) in early childhood settings but there is research to show that children are still receiving physical punishment and teachers have been reported to still be using CP in schools.Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis across all 5 participants revealed a strong influence of cultural norms that encourages the use of CP, a lack of support from the Jamaican Teachers Association and the Ministry of Education, ineffective teacher training courses and lack of support from the community causing these teachers to still rely on CP, for want of a better solutions. In light of these findings, this study hopes to provide insight for education policy makers to provide effective classroom management modules at Teacher Training College, introduction of school intervention programmes, parenting programmes and to better support its teachers to eliminate the use of CP across Jamaica, not just in schools alone.

This volume was written primarily for teachers who have developed (or who are being encouraged to develop) an awareness ofand commitment to teaching mathematics for understanding. The research findings presented in these chapters suggest instructional implicationsworthy of these teachers' consideration. Often, the authors in this volume describe instructional practices or raise issues that have thepotential to broaden views of teaching and learning mathematics. These chapters provide interesting problems and tasks used in the authors'work that readers can use in their own classrooms. The volume can also be used with courses for preservice and inservice teachers, collaborative teacher study groups, and other professionalactivities. A hallmark of good research is its connection to the relevant literature in the field, and the authors of this volume havethemselves drawn from the research literature to inform their work. The reference lists accompanying these chapters can be useful resourcesand should not be overlooked. Most importantly for teacher education, this volume showcases the variety of ways teachers can becomeengaged in research, and we hope that readers will recognize that teacher research can be both accessible and beneficial in the preparationand professional development of teachers. This is not to suggest, however, that this volume is intended only for teachers and teacher educators. Teacher evaluation--a term that brings fear, anticipation, stress, anxiety, or even boredom to the hearts of teachers and administrators everywhere. How can we reinvent teacher evaluation so that it really makes a difference--so that everyone in school benefits from it, so that teachers and administrators learn from it, so that students succeed as a result of it? The bad news is that many schools and districts seem to be stuck in old ruts, involving The Observation, The Behavior Checklist, and The Conference. The good news is that many districts have paved the way for teacher evaluation to actually become professional development, by using a three-track evaluation system:* Track I, for beginning teachers, promotes growth and new learning through mentoring, frequent observations, and support systems.* Track II, for tenured teachers--that is, most teachers in the system--promotes professional learning experiences through self-assessment, goal setting, data collection, formative evaluations, study groups, action plans, and evaluation in which teachers play an active role.* Track III, for tenured teachers needing assistance, focuses on remediating difficulties and recommending further action.More good news: Through concrete examples, useful forms, and assessment tools, this book provides a clear roadmap to effective teacher evaluation systems that combine quality assurance with professional development for all teachers.

HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE TEACHERS TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE?More than ever before, School Administrators want and need answers to this question. Those who have grasped why people behave as they do, can answer this question. Teaching can be more rewarding and effective, if we knew what successful teachers want from their jobs. This book evolved from that need. The book was written to determine the factors, assumptions and conditions that motivate successful teachers. This book was sought to answer the following question: What positive factors can be identified in successful teachers? There are two significant factors that contribute to motivating teachers who remain teaching. Educators and leaders seeking to motivate teachers should first identify what successful teachers find motivating. The major task is to determine the influencing factors and navigate strategies for enhancing motivation, which serves the needs of all teachers. Unless we find a way to attract and attain the best teachers, our legislative recommendations will not amount to anything. Teachers are the heart of the matter. The study of motivation and behavior is a search for answers to perplexing questions about human nature. It is important that we understand what keeps individuals in the classroom teaching and why they want to continue coming back over and over again. If any school district Superintendent, Principal or Administrator is seeking ways to improve student achievement, improving the motivation of teachers is...

Scientific Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, , language: English, abstract: Krieg (2005) in his review of impact of teacher gender on student gender states that while a large body of research focuses on the gender of students, less research explores the impacts of a teacher's gender on students (Hopf & Hatzichristou 1999 ). Evidence suggests that male teachers tend to be more authoritative whereas female teachers tend to be more supportive and expressive (Meece, 1987 ). A survey of 20 teachers indicates that male teachers are likely to select a more aggressive disciplinary approach toward boys while teachers of either gender tended to ignore boys' disruptive behavior than that of girls when the behavior was not aggressive (Rodriguez, 2002). Krieg (2005) further reveals that researchers have found that teachers interact differently with students of similar gender than they do with students of opposite gender Einarsson, C., & Granström, K. (2002 ) This includes evidence suggesting disciplinary procedures and proclivity to discipline vary by both student and teacher gender. Likewise, a teacher's perception of student characteristics and abilities appear to systematically vary by gender. Other studies find male students benefit at the expense of female students in the amount and quality of interaction received from teachers of both genders. What has yet to be determined is how these differences in disciplin...

In past decade, the use of ICT in schools increased exponentially. However, ICT integration in teaching is still utilized at a low level. While many ICT professional development programs for teachers focus mainly on developing teachers' technical competency, the effect of their attitude, perception and emotion towards ICT integration is usually neglected. In this book, a social approach to professional development of ICT integration is argued to be important to improve ICT integration. A research was conducted to look at issues of ICT integration from the teachers' perspective and to explore the impact of peer support in enhancing ICT professional development. Based on the research findings, this book draws the focus on developing teachers' intrinsic motivation towards ICT integration. Peer support is found to be an enabler of intrinsic motivation. A sustainable peer support enhanced professional development model is thus developed. This book should help shed some light on developing ICT professional development programs for teachers and should be especially useful to teachers, professional developers and school leaders who want to lift ICT integration to a higher level.

Explore the complexity of teacher-student relationships in secondary school settings and learn how these largely unscripted relationships function for students and teachers in their learning and socioemotional development. For teachers, the relationships provide a foundation for pedagogical and curricular endeavors and lead to their increased investment in students’ growth, development, and academic success. Students who have such relationships feel more comfortable in their learning environments, interested in the material, and motivated to perform well. We discuss what these relationships look like from the perspectives of teacher and student. Topics include: Drawing appropriate boundaries School-provided guidelines and guidance Formats for supporting teachers A whole school approach to working on students’ emotional challenges Relationships in after-school programs. The voices of teachers and students in this volume show how much young people want to feel known and engage with teachers and how much teachers feel rewarded and invigorated by taking the step to connect with students on this level. This is the 137th volume of New Directions for Youth Development, the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series dedicated to bringing together everyone concerned with helping young people, including scholars, practitioners, and people from different disciplines and professions.
