The low switching frequency, low converter losses and flexible control made it most attractive topology. It is important to make a research on the loss calculation method of MMC and state formulae for the losses as it is a vital step during the design stage of the MMC based HVDC system. In this research work, the structure of MMC based HVDC system is discussed. Three sub module topologies'; half bridge, full bridge and clamp double sub module, are discussed. A method based on the average and root mean square (RMS) values of the current passing through the sub module is discussed. The conversion losses in the switching devices of the sub modules are calculated using the method. A cases study is taken into consideration then with certain parameters. Using these parameters a MATLAB program is developed. With the help of the program the losses and efficiency curves for each switching device by taking each sub module separately are obtained respectively. This research treatise shows the performance analysis of the microstrip antenna, based on the various parameters of it that are used to implement it and provides an optimization decision to get highly efficient microstrip antenna. In these paper different microstrip array antennas such as Series-feed, corporate-feed and series-corporate feed are analyzed and simulated. These antennas are designed on a thin substrate for the application of conformal microstrip array antenna. In all cases we get return losses in the range -4.21dB to -25.456 dB at resonance frequency. The gain of these antennas are simulated and found adequate results where side lobe label is maintained lower than main lobe. Operating frequency of these antennas is 10 GHz so these antennas are suitable for X-band application.

It restructures the power system and also helps in distribution system planning. This dissertation addresses the issue of voltage margin improvement by integrating DG unit and, therefore, this dissertation presents the model to enhance the candidate bus voltage of distribution system by optimal integration of DG units. The technical analysis is performed for radial distribution system (RDS).The proposed algorithm evaluates the base condition of loss and bus voltage and then generate populations of solutions at first stage. Optimization of DG unit size and locate the optimal bus can be done with the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method. The proposed paradigm works with the objective that minimize the active power loss under a constraint of voltage limit and DG size limit.Finally, the conclusion is that DG unit can locate optimally with optimized size to the distribution system for the voltage profile improvement of the buses and also the total loss of system is reduced. It is also concluded that the model can be used for any radial distribution systems.

The system is able to automate: (i) the determination of the placement of gate, and (ii) determination of the shape of gate for die-casting parts having simple shapes. The system has to be implemented in GUI of MATLAB 7.10 using the best industry practices and recommendations from NADCA for gating-system design. The proposed system is able to generate parameters of multi-cavity gating-system for parts requiring multi-gates from the part model data. The other information required for working of the system includes material properties, die-casting process parameters and die-casting casting machine parameters which comes under the data initialization process. The parameters of the gating-system which are determined by the system are used for design of gating-system for the multi-cavity dies. This is done by updating the parameters of pre-modeled gating-system features stored as feature library. Chapter 3 , 4 and 5 present the various modules of the system along with its implementation on case-study parts. A novel objective method of digital analysis for microscopic examination of structural elements of fused periclase was developed. Main parameters are presented, which show the difference of the newly suggested method of investigation from the usual - linear one, in which examination is done with the help of chords. For comparison there are given results of measurements (done with the help of the old and the new method) of fused periclase crystal size, produced by Magnezit Group and by other manufacturers. Testing of fused periclase containing more than 97,5%MgO and various ratio of CaO/SiO2 in periclase - carbon refractories has not found influence of this parameter on the strength of refractories in steel - teeming ladles.

A method of sensor location selection is introduced for distributed parameter systems. In this method, the sensitivities of spatial outputs to model parameters are computed by a model and transformed via continuous wavelet transforms into the time-scale domain to characterize the shape attributes of output sensitivities and accentuate their differences. Regions are then sought in the time-scale plane wherein the wavelet coefficient of an output-sensitivity surpasses all the others' as indication of the output sensitivity's uniqueness. This method yields a comprehensive account of identifiability each output provides for the model parameters as the basis of output selection. This output selection strategy is evaluated for a numerical case of pollutant dispersion by advection and discussion in a two-dimensional area.

New challenges are constantly faced in the development of RF and microwave filters, which have not only sustained but fuelled microwave filter research over the many years. These developments have encouraged new solutions for the realization of compact, low loss, highly selective RF and microwave filters. This text presents a novel distributed dual-mode resonator configuration which allows the realisation of tunable, highly compact microwave bandpass filters. Many interesting and attractive characteristics of the resonator are explored in detail. Application of this resonator in bandpass filter design is discussed with examples illustrating the design process with theoretical and experimental results to showcase filter performance. All-pole, generalised Chebyshev and dual-bandpass filters are shown to be easily developed with the novel resonator while achieveing a highly miniature footprint and a wide stopband. Finally, by employing a novel non-linear distortion enhancement technique readily applicable to this resonator, the design of highly linear tunable filter is discussed.

This book presents the development of electronics for operation at cryogenic temperatures, with particular emphasis on the cryogenic electronics required for the Antimatter Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy (AEgIS) experiment at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). The research is focused on a highly sensitive charged particle detection system for a Penning trap, on cryogenic low-pass filters and on a low-loss DC-contact RF switch. The detection system consists of a high quality factor tuned circuit including a superconducting coil, and a low-noise amplifier. The developed electronics must reliably operate at 4.2K (-269ºC) and in high constant magnetic field of more than 1 Tesla. Therefore, the performance of the cryogenic electronic designs were carefully evaluated at low-temperature/high magnetic field, the result of which have important implications for the AEgIS experiment. Moreover, a new possibility of replacing the superconducting coil by a very high quality factor crystal resonator is presented and its possible application in experiments with charged, trapped particles is described.

It will be seen that utilizing these methods, it is possible to improve the quality of any final product.

The first edition of “Microstrip Filters for RF/Microwave Applications” was published in 2001. Over the years the book has been well received and is used extensively in both academia and industry by microwave researchers and engineers. While the fundamentals of filter circuits have not changed, further innovations in filter realizations and other applications have occurred with changes in the technology and use of new fabrication processes, such as the recent advances in RF MEMS and ferroelectric films for tunable filters; the use of liquid crystal polymer (LCP) substrates for multilayer circuits, as well as the new filters for dual-band, multi-band and ultra wideband (UWB) applications. Although the microstrip filter remains as the main transmission line medium for these new developments, there has been a new trend of using combined planar transmission line structures such as co-planar waveguide (CPW) and slotted ground structures for novel physical implementations beyond the single layer in order to achieve filter miniaturization and better performance. Also, over the years, practitioners have suggested topics that should be added for completeness, or deleted in some cases, as they were not very useful in practice. THE ACTIVITY CONCENTRATIONS OF RADIONUCLIDES AND PHYSICHOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS USED AS WATER QUALITY INDICATORS WAS MEASURED IN BOREHOLE, WELL AND STREAM SAMPLES OF OBAFEMI OWODE AND ODEDA AREA OF OGUN STATE, SOUTH WESTERN NIGERIA. THIS WAS ALSO MEASURED FOR THE PALM OIL PRODUCED LOCALLY BY THE LOCAL POPULATION. THE PHYSICOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS INDICATED LOW HYGINIC QUALITY OF THE WATERS CONSUMED BY THE LOCAL POPULATION. HIGH LEVELS OF RADIONUCLIDES WERE ALSO PRESENT BEYOND THE MAXIMUM DAILY INTAKE FOR URANIUM. THE PALM OIL SAMPLES WERE RELATIVELY OK COMPARED TO THEIR WATER COUNTERPART.

SMC-based FTC for nonlinear systems are developed to handle both partial loss faults and total failures in control surfaces. The first method is developed to accommodate both modeling uncertainty and uncertainty incurred by faults. Different design parameters are utilized to deal with the uncertainty incurred by fault and that due to modeling errors respectively in the SMC design. Direct adaptive control is combined into such a SMC to alleviate the requirement of the a priori knowledge of the uncertainty bounds. The second method is developed to redistribute the control effort between faulty regular actuator and redundant actuator autonomously based on effectiveness of the regular actuators. The tolerability of the developed controller is characterized by the amount of fault that controller can deal with. It is used as the threshold to activate the redundant actuator when the regular actuator cannot accommodate the fault alone. The third method without a dedicated FDD is developed based on the absolute quantity of switching surface. The control effort is redistributed to regular and redundant actuator autonomously by monitoring the absolute quantity of the sliding surface.

In this book, models for the prediction of lattice parameters of substitutional and interstitial solid solutions as a function of concentration and temperature are presented. For substitutional solid solutions, the method is based on the hypothesis that the measured lattice parameter versus concentration is the average of the interatomic spacing within a selected region of a Bravais lattice. The model is applied on Ni-Cu and Ge-Si solid solutions.For the interstitial solid solution of the Fe-C system, the method is based on the assumption that the change in lattice parameter of the pure Fe phase is due to the occupation by carbon atoms to the octahedral holes in the fcc austenite; and bct martensite.The model of lattice parameter versus temperature for both substitutional and interstitial solid solutions is based on the relative change in length and vacancy concentration at lattice sites that are in thermal equilibrium. Combinations of both models then facilitate the calculation of lattice parameters as a function of concentration and temperature. The results are discussed accordingly.

Moisture content (mc) within the cotton fibre is an important aspect for all stages of the ginning process. However due to the process dynamics, mc is currently being controlled by regulating the water and air temperatures from the Humidifiers. Human intervention and lack of consistence on set-points determination has resulted in inconsistent mc during humidification. This procedure requires a control system which will be able to adjust the process set-points automatically by eliminating the need for human intervention. In this paper a robust Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) system for a Samuel Jackson Humidifier is presented. This system improves upon the existing system by creating a closed loop controller with parameters that can be updated to change the response from reference model. The control parameters are then updated based on this error thus the parameters converge to ideal values that cause the plant response to match the response of the reference model.

This book describes about the experimental and simulation work carried out on rectangular microstrip antennas (RMAs). The various RMAs have been designed and fabricated on easily available, low cost FR4 dielectric material at S-band frequency. The patch element (radiator) is excited using co-axial probe feed technique. The effect of slots, slits, stubs in enhancing the various antenna parameters such as compactness, impedance bandwidth and gain are studied in detail. Compactness, impedance bandwidth and gain of RMA has been enhanced using various techniques such as patch with slots, slits on patch, stubs loaded patch on 0.16 cm thick dielectric material with inverted patch configuration having air as a substrate medium. With these techniques, a compactness of 78%, 12.41% of bandwidth. It is also concluded that by etching the various slits on the patch having a superstrate thickness of 0.24 cm (2.4 mm thick Yagi-RMA and 2.4 mm thick H-RMA). This technique reduced the maximum physical size (compactness) of the antenna upto 98.3 % with a gain of 7.13 dB.These antennas may find applications in the wireless, microwave communication systems operating in L and S band of frequency range.

The present study made an attempt to find out the effect of spectral variations on perception of speech in young normal hearing adults. The study showed that the spectral information between 1500 Hz and 2100 Hz are important for perception of speech in Telugu & was no difference found in lower cut off is important in perception of speech in Telugu compared to English language.The speech identification scores improved with increase in low-pass cut off frequencies and with decrease in high-pass cut off frequencies. The participants obtained speech identification scores of 70% at low-pass cut off frequency of 1500 Hz and at high-pass cut off of 2100 Hz.

Optical dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system using different types of fiber such as standard single mode fiber (SSMF), dispersion shifted fiber (DSF), non-zero dispersion shifted fiber (NZDSF) and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) is now tremendously popular for communication networks due to its high information capacity, high-channel-count and low system costs. DWDM transmission systems effectively exploit the huge potential bandwidth of an optical fiber. Among the nonlinear processes, four-wave mixing (FWM) has the most serious effect that limits the allowable input power and system capacity by generating new waves, which cause performance degradation of long-haul multi-channel light wave transmission systems. Though FWM effects are less on high dispersive system, as an effort to increase information capacity, designs are continually modified by decreasing channel spacing, increasing bit rate and input power, and in such cases even FWM has severe effects on high dispersive fiber. The system performances are studied on high dispersive SSMF varying system parameters such as bit rate, channel spacing, channel count, transmission reach and input power.

This study was carried out to determine the perceptions of clothing retail employees in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe regarding dominant routes of stock loss and the control methods against them. This was done with a view to determine the degree of fit between problem and control method and then make appropriate recommendations. The study was conducted by way of a survey involving six (6) clothing retailers located in different positions in and around the city of Bulawayo. Three (3) of these retailers operate chain stores in Bulawayo. Questionnaires were sent out to a total of 75 clothing retail employees at the levels of manager, (34.7%), supervisors (24%) and sales or shop-floor personnel (41.3%). The study established that employee clerical errors were the perceived dominant route of stock loss, yet the dominant stock loss method appears to be the use of security personnel. Apparently, there is a clear lack of fit between the real problem and the popular control method. It would seem sensible for clothing retailers, and indeed other retailers, to pay more attention to training employees to curb employee clerical errors.

This compensator should restore the balance and the power factor of a three-phase three-wire system by using reactive elements only. The derived parameters should be accessible remotely and displayed on a PC. L. S. Czarnecki recently presented a highly respected approach to derive the device parameters of the compensating susceptances. He defined the admittances Ye and A which represent the conditions in a three-phase system. He also suggested a way to derive these susceptances by measuring two line-to-line voltages and two line currents. The load balancing technique used in this project was based on Czarnecki’s approach. The first phase of the project concentrated on understanding and proving the theory behind the project by means of computer simulation. The second phase of the project involved writing software for the DSP and building an interface to successfully task the requirements set by the theory. The aspect of being able to transfer the data to a PC via a modem-to-modem connection was taken into account too. In the final stage it is shown that the implemented system is able to derive the necessary parameters in order to balance the currents and restore the power factor as supplied from mains. This book focus on a detailed study of how to design and simulate a microstrip fed rectangular patch antenna using IE3D software with effect of antenna dimensions length ( L ), width ( W ), relative dielectric constant , substrate thickness (t ) on the radiation parameters of bandwidth and gain. The design parameters of the antenna calculated using the transmission line model. Here antenna operates for tri- band operation, the operating bands are GSM , PCA and UTMS for antenna geometry -I and WLAN and WiMAX for antenna geometry -II. This research first examines the current condition of the building drainage system design in Taiwan, including an investigation 51 apartment buildings. The second part is to experiment on the air pressure in the vertical stack drainage system . An experimental device that simulates a medium-height apartment was set up to provide empirical parameters and model verification at NTUST. A considerable progress has been made in predicting the air pressure distribution within vertical drainage stacks.The third part focuses on a 2-pipe vertical drainage stack for conducting the empirical parameter and evaluation method of air pressure of building drainage systems. Next, the air pressure prediction in 2-pipe vertical drainage stacks from the predicted results of a single drainage stack has been illustrated.The study also conducts the comparison between the measured data and calculated values. It reveals that these prediction and evaluation methods can reproduce the mean air pressure distribution value in a vertical drainage stack. Meanwhile, the prediction method of air pressure in the 2-pipe stack drainage system has been successfully established in the study.

Angular-resolved optical scatterometry is a new promising technology for metrology in lithography for the construction of VLSI chips such as DRAMs and CPUs. In order to measure the geometry dimensions and material properties of markers and interconnect lines, one needs to solve Maxwell's equations for an electromagnetic scattering problem. The well known RCWA discretization method is too slow for 3D applications whence one takes resort to either a finite element discretization method or a volume integral method (VIM). VIM systems of equations can be solved faster than FEM systems of equations. This book focuses on an iterative solution of linear systems emanating from VIM. Each different linear system depends in a non-linear manner on several geometry, material and incoming light-wave parameters. For a typical 2D-periodic application on resist, VIM is a factor of 20 faster than RCWA. The VIM discretization leads to a dense complex linear system for the electric field for a 2D-periodic grating (3D Maxwell's equations). The coefficient matrix A is almost full but matrix-vector multiplications can be performed. Therefore; systems should be solved with an iterative solution method.

Unimodel biometric systems perform person recognition based on a single source of biometric information and are affected by problems like noisy sensor data, non-universality and lack of individuality of the chosen biometric trait, absence of an invariant representation for the biometric trait and susceptibility to circumvention. Some of these problems can be alleviated by using multimodal biometric systems that consolidate evidence from multiple biometric sources. In this project a new method of multibiomedical authentication system will be introduced using two types of biometric face and the finger print of the person to be identified. This method is based upon developing new hybrid transform from the combination of multiwavelet transform and wavelet network transform as a feature extractor and a classifier. In this proposed system multi method will be used to reach the best solution.

A new technique is developed utilizing the system pressure frequency response to locate and quantify leaks and blockages. The pressure frequency response is calculated at the downstream valve by the transfer matrix method. It is found that the presence of leaks and blockages alters the shape of the system pressure frequency response, the amplitude of pressure oscillations at even harmonics is increased and the amplitude at the odd harmonics is decreased. The increase in amplitude at the even harmonics is used to detect the location of leaks or blockages based on the leak and blockage frequency. For a simple pipeline, the technique successfully detected blockages up to 30% in size and leaks up to 2% of the mean discharge. Moreover, the computed results are verified by comparing with experimental measurements and those obtained by using the method of characteristics.

Nowadays, the application of Medium Voltage (MV) drives has grown due to the increasing demand of high efficiency and energy saving in industry, traction, power generation, power transmission, and distribution. Among the MV multilevel converters available on the market, the Three-Level Neutral Point Clamped Voltage Source Converter (3L-NPC VSC) has emerged as one of the most important topologies. One important disadvantage of this topology is the unequal power loss distribution and consequently, an unsymmetrical junction temperature distribution. In order to ensure that the most stressed power switches do not exceed the maximal allowable junction temperature, the converter output power and switching frequency have to be limited. To overcome this drawback, the Three-Level Active Neutral Point Clamped Voltage Source Converter (3L-ANPC VSC) was developed.There are two different loss balancing methods evaluated in this work: the already known Active Loss Balancing (ALB) method and a new method, the predictive active loss balancing (PALB) method. The use of the balancing methods applied to the 3L-ANPC VSC present outstanding results in all critical operation points as compared to the performance of the 3L-NPC VSC. Thus, the phase current and the output power range can be increased without exceeding the thermal limitation of the semiconductors. The UWB standard became increasingly popular platform for implementing short range high data rate communication in various types of consumer electronic products. The need to maintain low power consumption while providing a reliable link justifies the development of a RF Transmitter Predistortion Linearization System, especially at the upper part of the useful frequency band of 6-10GHz, where larger propagation path loss and antenna interconnect losses are anticipated. The Tx Predistortion System allows an increase in the maximum usable linear power of the UWB transmitter on the order of 2-3dB. The digitally assisted analog baseband predistortion approach constitutes cost and power efficient method suitable for the commercial UWB chipset. This work reports design and performance of the transmitter linearization system using a baseband analog predistortion approach. The system is implemented as part of the commercial UWB transceiver chip in a 0.13um CMOS process.

It is applied in order to maintain stability of the system, when the power system generation fails to supply the increase of load. Load shedding is a common technique to maintain the power system stability by curtailment of partial load in some part of the system. However, the load shedding techniques for an islanded distribution network should be treated differently from the transmission power system. A particular approach of under-frequency load shedding scheme is required for an islanded system which is known to be not as strong as the grid.
