The migration of farm workers to rural Scotland is an important issue that relates to the existing theories and research in contemporary equality and cultural capital studies, particularly in regard to the exploration of how and in what ways cultural capital theory can be addressed to study migrants equality claims, the examination of how complex equality models can be used for inquiry into the reinforcement of inequalities in cultural capital and the accumulative effects of such inequality. In particular, the experiences of East European migrant farm workers challenge theoretical perspectives that apply a) an approach of equality claim from cultural capital, which emphasize b) equal right to recognition, and therefore, c) focus on entitlement to equal protection against any discrimination. This book, therefore, offers us a way to explore these experiences with a call for attention to be paid to a large number of East European migrant farm workers who have migrated to rural Scotland to work in low paid jobs marked with low skills. Unlike majority members of a population, migrant farm workers often give up their cultural capital and take up low skilled jobs in order to gain opportunities for success in other spheres in their lives. Critiquing such a trade-off approach, if the sphere of migrants cultural capital is invaded and the cultural capital of local workers (native) is acknowledged, migrants are in a vulnerable position. I also argue although migrants achievements are de...

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, Oxford Brookes University, language: English, abstract: Global markets are changing faster than ever and increasing international competition makes it necessary for managers to understand not only the domestic culture but also the host country's culture. Derived from globalisation, successful cross-cultural management is gaining in importance and its need for understanding of cultural differences becomes essential. Because of this it is argued that, with the increasing importance of a cross-cultural understanding, Hofstede's (1980) model of cultural dimensions gains proportional importance and attracts notice at the same time. His study is widely used in global operating organisations within trainings and workshops. The first step of effective cross-cultural management is the awareness that cultural differences exist and domestic strategies might fail in host countries.Even though, Hofstede's (1980) cultural study is the most important one and widely known, there are many other cultural studies, which are only partly supporting his study. For each and every model of cultural identifications arouse praise and criticism and Hofstede was not spared by criticism. The main criticism refers to the methodology Hofstede used and many authors questioned its validity and reliability. Another major critique is that the nearly 40-years old survey f...

Therefore, theoretical and practical insights in the subject of culture, its implicit and explicit differences, as well as its measurements will be provided. Due to the fact that communication - as a major cultural attribute - is the most obvious level on which cultural differences are recognized, insights in the topic of cross-cultural and intercultural communication will be given. A thorough discussion of the concept of culture and communication is beyond the scope of this paper, but in what follows, an adequate overview of recognized and well-known researchers' theories and findings will be provided. Besides giving theoretical background knowledge, it will be examined whether the internationally defined soft skills of intercultural competence can be seen as an approach towards a universal interculture, likewise a universal communication. The topic of the present thesis will be illustrated by a case study, as well as researched and evaluated by a field study conducted at one of the most culturally diverse organization - the United Nations. Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 71 % - A, University of Newcastle, language: English, abstract: There is a high failure rate in cross-border M&A. Many of them fail due to cultural differences of the combining organisations. This study examines the role of culture in cross-border M&A regarding national and organisational culture among other factors that are important for a successful integration strategy in M&A across borders. The factors discussed are based on empirical findings, and on literature that in the analysis, proved to corroborate the findings of the primary data, or insights based on these findings. Since many authors comply with DaimlerChrysler having failed because of two heterogeneously organisational cultures and different management styles trying to combine into a new culture, this topic was of special interest of the researcher. DaimlerChrysler is being used as a case study approach in this research to find out how important the role of culture in cross-border M&A is. Furthermore, it has been observed, that the controversial evidence in the literature if many cross-border M&A fail due to cultural differences is of interest concerning the research objectives and the literature revealed that in this area little research is done so far. Therefore, one objective of this research is to fill the gap in the literature regarding national and organisational culture when integrating one firm ...

The scope of this report is broad as it incorporates the implications of cultural differences in relation to the cross-border strategic alliance. Corporate Culture is used as term to signify how the managers and the workers of particular organisation tend to behave. Many international companies (Nestlè and Shell) have long term commitment towards cultural awareness and normally accepted it as an integral part of their international practices. Cultural clash and its bottom line influence are usually complicated and hard to predict. Frequently, failure to anticipate cultural clash originated from the senior managers and dealmakers lack of awareness. Understanding the prediction and mitigation of negative influence of cultural differences should be a part of cross-border alliances agenda for all management levels. From the case study chapter it has been figured out that most of American cultural traits have seemed to have direct clash with the Swedes culture which is characterised by certain aspects: modesty, values of relationship, caring and the quality of life. Both countries determined to h...

In the study the sample consisted of 119 persons in middle management positions (82 male and 37 female), 60 persons with work experience in Japan and 59 without experience. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding 52 leadership characteristics (e.g. the ability to assert oneself, to cooperate or to delegate) within five cultural dimensions. Participants then rated the importance of this characteristic for the specific category. Findings of the study showed significant differences in experienced and estimated management styles between the countries as well as significances regarding management traits of the german culture after working in Japan. In the multi-national, cosmopolitan country of Canada, Translation Studies research drawing upon themes of migration and cultural identity has become part of the nation's literary make up. These issues represent areas of cultural and linguistic defiance and reconciliation that migrant writers, translators, novelists, poets and literary artists have carefully examined. In sharing in this rich literary heritage, this book seeks to determine the abiding concepts fundamental to the migrant identity, and how it finds relevance in the themes of translation and cultural identity. It distinctly emphasizes the poetic form of migrant writings of the self and links theoretical notions of migration and identity in Translation Studies. Through an analysis of the poetry of Marie-Célie Agnant, it presents a representation of Agnant's migrant persona and offers a clear perspective on how migration has shaped her work as a female Haitian poet and author living in Quebec.

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,7, Buckinghamshire New University, language: English, abstract: The aim of this study is to identify and evaluate the cultural challenges within organisational leadership imposed by their internationalisation activities. This dissertation aims to create an understanding for the relevance of cultural differences within the internationalisation process. It does so by analysing the cultural differences between the German and Swedish construction supply industries. The research question is; what are the cultural challenges related to leadership that organisations face when doing business in foreign countries. I discuss this question based on the analysis of the contemporary academic literature, whereby Hofstede's cultural model is considered. Semi-structured expert interviews were used to analyse the current cultural situation in both industries as well as to evaluate the findings of the theory. In conclusion, the analysis of the German and Swedish construction supply industries showed a significant difference between the contemporary literature and the primary findings of this thesis. Certain aspects of the cultural dimensions of both industries did not correspond to the literature's view of each country's culture. Although both industries are similar they show differences, which are recognised within the approach to leadership. Cultural chan...

The research is based upon considerations of a literature review in the fields of gender bias and stereotype conducted previously. Subjects from Spain and Germany were asked to evaluate a director (male or female) of a fictive feedback situation that was described before a short questionnaire. The questions of the questionnaire were based on previous research and findings of the literature review. Results show no significance differences in the evaluation across genders and cultures. We tested if previous experience with a woman leader was related to a higher evaluation of the female leader finding no significant relationship. We tested if there was a relationship between the previous experience with a female leader and the preference to work for a certain leader's gender finding no significant relationship. Taking into consideration the subgroup "previous experience with a female leader", we analyzed if personnel responsibility was related to the preference to work for a certain leader's gender finding no relationship. A successful design for building a Learning Trajectory (LT) requires an understanding of how students think and successive refinements on LT based on the empirical data. As a result this study aims to understand students' strategies and students' performance differences as they worked on reallocation and covariation items by using Piagetian clinical interview methodology (Opper, 1977). Covariation and Reallocation are two levels of Equipartitioning Learning Trajectory (Confrey, 2009). Several factors (item-stem formats, classes and types, manipulative usage) may affect students' performance, and mathematical strategies. The findings from this study indicate that there is a significant difference in younger and older students' mathematical strategies on given problems. Younger students demonstrated a significant change in their problem-solving strategies and performance when presented with manipulatives. In addition students of all ages demonstrated changes in their problem-solving strategies when item-stems were presented in different formats and from varied item classes. This study supports teachers to diagnose students' need as they learn these key mathematics concepts.

Due to tough global business environment, strategic negotiation skills are necessary for increasing profits and negotiating successfully in an international context. Negotiating relationships become increasingly important as individuals and companies do business globally. Cultural differences have a broad effect on business, thus also on business negotiations. Cultural differences between Romania and Austria exist regarding communication, goal-orientation, time and decision making process. These factors have influence on negotiations as Romanians behave in another way as Austrians do. Negotiators must be aware that cultural differences increase the time required to reach an agreement and they can lead to suboptimal agreements or even to a complete breakdown of negotiations.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: Cross-cultural exchanges serve the purpose of contributing to a cultural understanding, broadening the horizon and more. This leads to the understanding that two individuals with respective cultures encounter each other and explain their cultural peculiarities, meaning they will therefore benefit from the experience. This however presents a rather static understanding of culture, as it implies that each exchange is successful and goes without a problem. A successful exchange for hosts and exchange students relies on various factors such as tolerance, interest and adjustment on both sides, as two different cultures meet. The diversity of cultural theories has resulted from these factors, which have to be considered in order to resolve cultural misunderstandings and establish a relationship. In this paper, the focus will be on German-American relations through the lens of student exchanges in a High School setting and focus on the culture exchange and development of a relationship between the exchange students and their host families. The majority of the literature found as regard student exchanges concentrates on the students' perspective as to sharing their experiences and gain throughout this experience. Abstract: This thesis handles a topic which is of high importance for all companies doing business internationally . But nevertheless there are still less companies who make this a subject of everydaylife. What I am talking about is culture, cultural differences and cross cultural management. Scientific Study from the year 2015 in the subject Cultural Studies - Near Eastern Studies, , course: Language & Identity, language: English, abstract: As shifting identity and target cultural attachment act as important factors in the language learning process, this study aims to analyze the effects of learning English on the culture and identity change in Iranian EFL learners. To this end, fifty BA and fifty MA students majoring in TEFL participated in the study by answering the questionnaires. Also, twenty of them were interviewed along with ten EFL instructors. To control the factor of gender, all the participants were male. The data comes from two questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The data was analyzed using SPSS. The interviews were analyzed based on content analysis procedures. The results of the study revealed that the younger the participants were the more they were interested in shifting their identities and attaching to the target culture. The results further indicated that MA students had more information about both their native and the target culture and they could manage their shifting identities better than the BA students.

A fundamental challenge that management faces in the twenty-first century is how to exercise adequate control, i. e. how to guide and direct the behaviour of their subordinates. With increasing globalisation firms witness a cross-cultural impact too. Of particular interest is the question of whether to use the standardized form of control similar to the home base of firms or whether to adapt their control practices to the local specificities. Given the meagre state of the literature in management control with a cross-cultural emphasis, this study addresses a real world problem, namely the question whether management control practices are configured similarly or differently across cultures.Relying on a generalized industry sample across four countries (Belgium, Canada, Germany and Poland), this study sought to shed light on one of the more intriguing questions - "does culture matter" - for specific control areas, in particular for performance measurement, performance evaluation and reward systems. The theoretical foundations are grounded in the cultural framework of the GLOBE project accompanied by thoughts of new institutionalism, stakeholder theory and contingency thoughts. Hypotheses are tested by mean comparisons (ANOVA, ANCOVA). The empirical findings highlight cultural differences for a broader set of control practices and deliver new insights into the intersection of culture and management control. This dissertation crafts a novel topic with high relevance for bo...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: B, Heilbronn University, language: English, abstract: Thesis paper about the cultural differences in motivating and managing human resources between the German and United States workforce and managers.Outstanding leadership performance of today's very culturally diversified workforce is, if not the, one of the most important challenges for organizations. One very important aspect of leadership is the ability to motivate; this is a much needed skill in order to allow co-workers and subordinates to use their full potential. Motivation is an essential part of any profession, not only for the employer or leader but also for the employee. This paper researches the differences in job-motivation that exist across cultures, particularly the cultural differences between Germany and the United States and presents a comparative analysis of these two cultures. Not every cultural difference seems directly linked to job-motivation, but on a deeper level many inconspicuous differences do affect motivation after all. The aim of this work is to find the discrepancies and similarities of values, beliefs and attitudes in the workplace and to come to an explanation of these influences and to conclude the implications they have. In pursuance of demonstrating the implications of culture on motivation, understanding of the concepts behind motivation and culture is absolutely necessary. Ther...

The Anthropology of Moralities

Anthropologists have been keenly aware of the tension between cultural relativism and absolute norms, and nowhere has this been more acute than with regards to moral values. Can we study the Other's morality without applying our own normative judgments? How do social anthropologists keep both the distance required by science and the empathy required for the analysis of lived experiences? The plurality of moralities has not received an explicit and focused attention until recently, when accelerated globalization often resulted in the collision of different value systems. Observing, describing and assessing values cross-culturally, the authors propose various methodological approaches to the study of moralities, illustrated with rich ethnographic accounts, thus offering a valuable guide for students of anthropology, sociology and cultural studies and for professionals concerned with the empirical and cross-cultural study of values.
