Mining activities take its roll on several aspects of environment like land (Geomorphology), soil cover, forest cover, surface and ground water air etc. Long years of mining which involves extractions of materials affect the landscape by defacing of land formation of anthropogenic and diversion of natural drainage system. Mine excavation may cause temporary water accumulation during rain. Mining activities cause pollution to a considerable extent on several grounds like land, dust and air, water etc. Deforestation is a pre requisite for any mining operation. It was found that besides the quarry area, vast expansions of other adjacent area have been deforested. Besides the mining areas, reserved and other forests allover have also suffered large scale depletion. This has also cause depletion of wild life and water shade areas. Mining activities defaced the local topography through excavation dumping provision of required infrastructural facilities like machinery installation, transportation and waste disposal. All these activities lead to physical and ecological encroachment of agricultural land. There by leading to the decrease in their availability.

The Corrupt Elites is a simple and straight-forward narrative in which explains the incidence of corruption or the rise of corruption within successive historical conjunctures in the Ghana. Some of the questions raised and answered in the study relate to how the Ghanaian precolonial, colonial and post-colonial states and their mutually interrelated political processes affected the production and distribution of wealth. In particular, how political decisions and interests of the political elites influenced the location of economic activities and the distribution of the costs and benefits of these activities. An explanation is given as to why corruption has festered in the Ghanaian polity and recrudesced from the 1990s with such devastating social, economic and political effect. The purpose of this essay is to substantiate the assumptions underpinning the narrative with concrete historical evidence.

Witchcraft violence is a feature of many contemporary African societies. In Ghana, belief in witchcraft and the malignant activities of putative witches is prevalent. Purported witches are blamed for all manner of adversities including inexplicable illnesses and untimely deaths. As in other historical periods and other societies, in contemporary Ghana, alleged witches are typically female, elderly, poor, and marginalized. Childhood socialization in homes and schools, exposure to mass media, and other institutional mechanisms ensure that witchcraft beliefs are transmitted across generations and entrenched over time. This book provides a detailed account of Ghanaian witchcraft beliefs and practices and their role in fueling violent attacks on alleged witches by aggrieved individuals and vigilante groups.

When John McCormack, a Scottish mining engineer living and working in Ghana, visited Jimmie in his Barons Court flat, accompanied by his girlfriend, Veronica Sam, Jimmie, who had only recently met the engineer while on a visit to the mining town of Tarkwa, had a business proposal. He would persuade him to go into business, trafficking gold. If he agreed, John would get the gold from the mining company in a manner only he would determine, Jimmie would fly to Ghana, collect it, and bring it to England to sell. The two would split the proceeds straight down the middle. With Veronica present, however, Jimmie was somewhat inhibited but hoped for an opportune moment to bring up the subject. While skirting around the subject during a discussion of the dire economic situation prevailing in Ghana, the engineer suddenly said, "You know, in Ghana today, and especially in Nigeria, red mercury is a hot commodity. A teaspoon full of the stuff will bring you several thousand naira." Jimmie registered the statement in his mind and decided that perhaps the red mercury track would be more lucrative than his business plan. In any case, he did not know how John McCormack would take the suggestion. Lured by prospects of striking it rich, Jimmie Quartey, recently graduated from Kings College, University of London, and his live-in girlfriend, Maria Kostopoulos, spent their lives' savings on twenty kilograms of mercuric oxide red and embarked upon a journey that would take them on a whir...

However, if their operations are not properly and efficiently regulated, it can lead to underdevelopment. Hence, this study focused on the prospects of regulating electronic media activities in Ghana by using the National Media Commission (NMC) as a case study. The mixed research method was used as well as primary and secondary data. The primary data was collected through questionnaires and interview guides. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques was used to select 100 respondents for the study. The findings of the study revealed that there are various existing regulations governing the electronic media in Ghana. It was also found that there are problems and challenges facing the NMC in the discharge of its duties. This has to do with the electronic media ownership, employees and team compositions and the internal weaknesses electronic media houses in ensuring adhering to the NMC regulations. The study recommends that Ghana Parliament should pass a law to empower the NMC to be more biting.

Gender inequality in most democratic countries in the world including Ghana has been a major setback to development. For instance, scholars have postulated on practical ideals and measures that countries could apply to close the gender gap if not completely eradicate women under-representation existing in most countries including Ghana. Ironically, Ghana's population is made up of over 52% females but has less than 10% of females occupying political and economic positions within the country. This study "Women and Democracy in Ghana" analyzes the existing scholarly debate and discussions about the cultural and institutional causes for the under-representation of women within its political system. In effect, the book provides systematic evidence on the under-representation of women in Ghana's parliament from independence in 1957 to the current legislature elected in December of 2008. Also included in the book is the tabular representation of women in Ghana's parliament from 1957 to present. The research reveals that the under-representation of women within the political system has contributed in undermining Ghana's democratic regime.

Ghana is not an exception as migration has become a common household survival strategy and the 'basic survival' strategy for individuals and families to enable them cope with difficult economic conditions. However, migration from the Northern Regions (comprising the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions) of the country to the economically rich regions in the Southern part of Ghana (particularly the Greater Accra Region) has been taking place for a very long time due to environmental problems, ethnic conflicts and endemic poverty. Men have dominated the process of migration from the North to the South to supply labour in the cocoa farms, industries and mining centres. Historically, the few women involved in the migration process have usually migrated to join their husbands. However, the trend has changed since the 1980s with more women migrating independently to urban centres in Southern Ghana to work as head porters (kaya yei) and in other jobs such as petty trading and housemaids.

In recent years, white-collar crime has increased dramatically by technological advances. The studies show that companies are affected annually by corruption, balance-sheet manipulation, embezzlement, criminal insolvency and other economic crimes. The companies are usually unable to identify the damage caused by fraudulent activities. To prevent fraud, companies have the opportunity to use intelligent IT approaches. The data analyst or the investigator can use the data which is stored digitally in today's world to detect fraud. In the age of Big Data, digital information is increasing enormously. Storage is cheap today and no longer a limited medium. The estimates assume that today up to 80 percent of all operational information is stored in the form of unstructured text documents. This bachelor thesis examines Data Mining and Text Mining as intelligent IT approaches for fraud detection in white-collar crime. Text Mining is related to Data Mining. For a differentiation, the source of the information and the structure is important. Text Mining is mainly concerned with weak- or unstructured data, while Data Mining often relies on structured sources. At the beginning of this bachelor thesis, an insight is first given on white-collar crim...

In 1957 Ghana became one of the first sub-Saharan African nations to gain independence from colonial rule. Over the next decade, hundreds of African Americans--including Martin Luther King Jr., George Padmore, Malcolm X, Maya Angelou, Richard Wright, Pauli Murray, and Muhammad Ali--visited or settled in Ghana. Kevin K. Gaines explains what attracted these Americans to Ghana and how their new community was shaped by the convergence of the Cold War, the rise of the U.S. civil rights movement, and the decolonization of Africa. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's president, posed a direct challenge to U.S. hegemony by promoting a vision of African liberation, continental unity, and West Indian federation. Although the number of African American expatriates in Ghana was small, in espousing a transnational American citizenship defined by solidarities with African peoples, these activists along with their allies in the United States waged a fundamental, if largely forgotten, struggle over the meaning and content of the cornerstone of American citizenship--the right to vote--conferred on African Americans by civil rights reform legislation.

The Challenges facing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Obtaining Credit in Ghana, highlights the issues facing Ghana's SMEs in their quest to accessing loans from financial institutions to undertake various business activities all in the name of creating jobs and the ultimate goal of helping to reduce poverty. There are financial institutions that are willing to provide credit facilities to SMEs but Ghanaian SMEs are not able to meet the requirements of these financial institutions even though they are really in need of the loan. Chief among the requirements demanded by these financial institutions is collateral. The nature of collateral in this part of the world is mostly landed property, which most SMEs cannot provide to cover the amount they really need. As a result, some of these SMEs settle for an amount far less than what they truly require to really drive their business agenda. This book thus takes a look at these challenges from the perspective of the Ghanaian SME operators.

The first Data Mining Application is to the phenomenon of salt –finger convection in superposed layers. The physical problem is the onset of finger convection in a porous layer underlying a fluid layer in a gravity modulated environment. The Second Data Mining Application is the implementation of three sequential mining algorithms .More emphasis is laid on PLWAP algorithm which is a version of the WAP tree algorithm that assigns unique binary position code to each tree node and performs the header node linkages in the pre-ordered fashion (root, left, right). The application of Genetic Algorithms to unconstrained non linear optimization problems is the Third Data Mining Application. It is observed from the present investigation that the methodology is unique in several respects and very informative. In addition to the above a novel GA (based on clustering) is also discussed. The Fourth Data Mining Application is with regard to Genetic programming and neural networks in medical data mining

Gomoa West District, a sub-national government structure in the Central Region of Ghana, was used as the social laboratory. The book shows that some districts in Ghana are financially under resourced and overly depend on central government transfers which is often erratic and fraught with managerial problems.Opportunities exists in such districts for expanding tax coverage and generating revenue locally. However some of the districts are faced with problems of revenue administration including logistics, personnel, low motivation and revenue leagues. Concerted effort is needed in areas of tax administration, capacity building, law enforcement and review of indicators in the formula for allocating the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF)to the districts in Ghana.Such review should be pro-poor based and geared towards addressing development gaps among the districts in Ghana, particularly development needs of resource-poor districts including the Gomoa West District. The book is recommended for everybody interested in local governments financing.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, Vrije University Brussel (Human Ecology Department), 52 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The role of medicinal plants in traditional health care delivery in Ghana cannot be overemphasized. More than 250 indigenous trees and plants with healing properties have been scientifically catalogued in Ghana. Unfortunately, the very foundation upon which the medicinal plant species and the traditional health care system survive is threatened by deforestation. The rate of deforestation has increased by 50% over the last ten years, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The current area of intact forest is now estimated at between 10.9 and 11.8% of the original cover and 6.9% of the country's total area. Deforestation is changing the habitats of disease-carrying insects and creating conditions that may help to spread malaria, river blindness and other devastating illnesses. Moreover, since the majority of the rural poor in Ghana depends on traditional medicine for their health care needs, the present high rate of deforestation will have a detrimental effect on the heath care delivery system in the country. Important plant species will be lost to deforestation unless urgent measures are taken. This paper examines the impact of deforestation on medicinal plants in Ghana.

For in recent times, a lot of banks have rated Ghana a good destination to extend their operations, the competition in the banking industry has heightened. To ensure that banks maintain adequate working capital, the industry regulator, i.e. the Bank of Ghana, issued a directive instructing all commercial banks to ensure that by the close of December 2012 their operating capitals do not fall below GH¢60million. At the close of December 2011, almost all foreign banks had complied. However, some of the local banks are sensing serious limitation in meeting the order. Therefore, the study has the objective to identify the challenges these banks have to face and thereby, the author will recommend avenues for raising funds to meet the proposed capital requirement. This study is based on six banks that operate in the Accra business district, namely the National Investment Bank (NIB), the Ecobank Ghana Ltd. (ECB), the Prudential Bank, the Ghana Commercial Bank, the Merchant Bank Ghana and the Zenith Bank. Primary data was obtained by soliciting views from bank officials on questions as the following. Which challenges confront Ghanaian Banks in their cash mobilization efforts? How could the banks generate more funds from the Ghana Stock Exchange? What efforts were made to secure funding from strategic investors? How could they reduce operating cost to enhance working capital? The second data set is based on financial statements and brochures of the banks. There was a direct approach to ...

Mining activities significantly impact the environment; they generate huge quantities of spoil, promote deforestation and the loss of agricultural production, as well as releasing contaminants that result in the loss of valuable soil resources. These negative impacts are now being recognized and this book shows how corrective action can be taken. The introduction of sustainable mining requires mitigation strategies that start during the mine planning stage and extend to after mineral extraction has ceased, and post-closure activities are being executed. Reclamation of Mine-impacted Land for Ecosystem Recovery covers: methods of rejuvenation of mine wasteland including different practices of physical, chemical and ecological engineering methods; benefits of rejuvenation: stabilization of land surfaces; pollution control; aesthetic improvement; general amenity; plant productivity; and carbon sequestration as well as restoring biodiversity and ecosystem function; best management practices and feasible solutions to the impacts of mining which will reduce the pollution load by reducing the discharge rate and the pollutant concentration; reduce erosion and sedimentation problems, and result in improved abandoned mine lands; and ecosystem development. The authors explain how mining impacts on soil properties and how soil carbon reserves/soil fertility can be restored when mining has ceased. Restoration involves a coordinated approach that recognizes the importance of key soil properties to enable re-vegetation to take place rapidly and ecosystems to be established in a low cost and sustainable way. This book’s unique combination of the methods for reclamation technologies with policies and best practice worldwide will provide the background and the guidance needed by scientists, researchers and engineers engaged in land reclamation, as well as by industry managers.

This book has been written basically to analyse a typical phenomenon concerning the media/politics nexus in contemporary Ghana by exploring how the processes of Othering are linguistically embedded in the political discourses of the state-owned Ghanaian newspaper, the Daily Graphic, when representing the relation between the ruling and opposition parties in Ghana since 1992. Secondly, the aim of this book is to demonstrate how Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) can be applied (or broadened) to alternative settings - here, alternative settings refer to contexts in which a conflict is not the topic of the discourse - and finally, to demonstrate that the scope of CDA can be broadened to include alternative settings.

Increasing the proportion of births supervised by Skilled Birth Attendants is an internationally agreed goal. However, available data indicate that little progress has been made in Sub-Sahara Africa. Though there is over 80 percent coverage of antenatal attendance in Ghana, there is pervasive maternal service utilization, yet, the underlying factors are poorly understood. Evidence-based data are therefore needed to inform policy formulation and the design of practical solutions to address the existing challenges particularly at the district and community levels. This book therefore, provides scientific evidence that explains the role individual factors play in influencing access and utilization of supervised delivery services in a typical district in Ghana. The book would particularly be useful for policy makers, the academia, as well as community and public health professionals.

Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Pedagogy - Science, Theory, Anthropology, grade: B, Ateneo de Manila University (Institute of Philippine Culture), course: MA Anthropology, language: English, abstract: Environmentally critical projects such as mining remain a controversial and divisive issue in mineral-rich communities. Arguably, mining projects bring jobs, revenues to local governments, cash income, and various development projects, such as electrification, paved roads, schools with free or subsidized education, chapels, water system, and other livelihood programs. In many instances, these benefits are very enticing and attractive to locals. However, scientific studies and objective data on mining operations in various communities have found out that mining also brings adverse effects and negative impacts on locals and the environment, such as displacement from homes and traditional livelihoods, dependence on cash income and incursion into their value system leading to consumerism, health problems caused by exposure to toxic materials, siltation of waterways, deforestation, loss of productive land, and pollution of marine environments (Coumans, 1999; Florentino-Hofileña, 1996; McAndrew, 1983; Regis, 2001; Tujan & Guzman, 1998). Environmental advocacy campaigns of both pro- and anti-mining communicate these mining benefits and costs to the locals to convince them either to accept the mining project or join the struggle against the mining project. Project Report from the year 2008 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, , course: Human Ecology, 38 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Food insecurity and poverty are the greatest global challenges facing the world today. Their redress is an indispensable requirement for sustainable development in developing countries, particularly in Africa. Poverty continues to be pervasive, intractable and inexcusable in the developing world particularly Sub-Saharan Africa. Extreme poverty ravages the lives of one in every four in the developing world (i.e. 1.2 billion people). The farming of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) is being promoted as a potential solution to the current high rates of malnutrition and poor health of the rural population, the degradation of tropical forests and the spread and intensification of poverty. However, the role of NTFPs in rural development in Ghana remains largely undervalued and understudied. This paper examines the contribution of NTFPs farming in enhancing poverty reduction, food security, sustainable forest management, and livelihoods improvement in the Sefwi Wiawso District (SWD) of the Western Region of Ghana. An exhaustive literature review and analysis of field data collected through administration of questionnaires, interviews and stakeholder consultations indicate that NTFPs are an important tool for addressing poverty amongst marginalised, forest-dependant communities in Ghana. 86% of farmers in SWD depend on ...

The American Production and Inventory Control Society investigated that after the successful introduction of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system a company faces an average of 45% decrease in dispatch delays and 50% decrease in production cycle. Effective access and application of data and information still remains a challenge in most companies. This book therefore assesses how the MHG Mining ERP can improve the mining value chain through remote and real time access to data simply with mobile devices. In conducting the research, data was collected from workers in various mining companies. The analytical method employed was the triangulation of data to ensure the findings made are valid and reliable. The result shows that, MHG Mining ERP has the potential to improve the myriad functions associated with mine operations and other functional areas found in the mining value chain. The ERP as part of its functions convert a typical mobile phone into an autonomous digital data collection device. The findings presented in the book have an implication on the success of operations undertaken by mine managers and supervisors, consultants as well as project management researchers.
