Since the inception of Microstrip Patch antenna constant efforts are being made to modify the overall performance of this class of antenna field. Although the Microstrip antenna has some of shortcoming till this date such as low gain, narrow operating bandwidth, poor radiation efficiency, yet it has been one the most suitable candidate for modern wireless communication technology. Here I present a design of a single band Microstrip circular patch antenna. In addition, with the aid of an electromagnetic bandgap structure (EBG), circular array and superstrate, the antenna can be designed to operate in x band used for the spacecraft to ground communication link. The return loss, input impedance, VSWR and other parameters are calculated. The analysis and design of the antenna is carried out using the numerical package based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). Here I introduces the High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) as an effective tool for modeling electromagnetic structures. HFSS is an interactive simulation system whose basic mesh element is a tetrahedron. This allows us to solve any arbitrary 3D geometry, especially those with complex curves and shapes.

In this book,an original theoretical, numerical and simulation based realistic study of metamaterial loaded circular patch antenna has been described. Initially, basics of metamaterials and patch antennas have been discussed. Later,a novel technique to achieve multi-band performance in both reduced and conventional sized microstrip circular patch antennas loaded with metamaterial has been shown with mathematical derivation. Incorporation of symmetric slotting concept with the concept of additional mode modification in both ENG and MNG metamaterial loaded circular patch antennas have been shown. The use of metamaterial causes unconventional mode modification, whereas symmetrical slotting not only introduces another band but also improves the gain by around 1 dB of unconventional mode for MNG loaded antenna. In the first part of our research work,we have reported both dual and triple band conventional sized circular patch antenna partially loaded with ENG metamaterial.Later,both dual and triple band conventional sized circular patch antenna partially loaded with MNG metamaterials have been shown.We hope that our research will pave the way for a lot of new researchs in antenna system.

The two main properties of the fractal antennas were investigated. Firstly, the self-similarity property was studied. The cavity model is used to analyze an equilateral triangular patch on a grounded dielectric substrate. A Matlab program was built to calculate the resonant frequencies, the input impedance, the reflection coefficient, etc. Then this triangular patch was used as the initiator of the Sierpinski Gasket fractal antenna with probe feeding. The first three iterations of this antenna were studied. These novel shapes include an air gap between the substrate and the ground plane, inverting the patch to reduce the dielectric loss and consequently increase the antenna efficiency and adding a shorting pin to improve the matching conditions as well as reducing the antenna size. Secondly, the space-filling property was studied and the rectangular microstrip patch was used as an initiator to all iterations. The first three iterations of a single pulse microstrip patch antenna were investigated. The second step was to study other shapes like the two pulses, NRZ (Non Return to Zero), Koch at angles 30o, 60o, 80o and 90o, Pulse 2.45 and Pulse 2.45 + Koch 90o microstrip antennas.

An X-band linearly polarized microstrip reconfigurable reflectarray antenna with beam steerable angle upto 16° has been designed, fabricated and measured. The unit cell consists of a microstrip patch on the top layer and variable length slot in the ground plane. The designed unit cell of dimensions 15mm x 15mm provides a reflection phase range of 153°. The array has 64 elements of different reflection coefficient phases in the form of a planar array. A reflectarray prototype has been measured in a far-field anechoic chamber facility at NUST, giving a gain of 14dB and axial ratio>20dB at the operating frequency of 10GHz.

This book focus on a detailed study of how to design and simulate a microstrip fed rectangular patch antenna using IE3D software with effect of antenna dimensions length ( L ), width ( W ), relative dielectric constant , substrate thickness (t ) on the radiation parameters of bandwidth and gain. The design parameters of the antenna calculated using the transmission line model. Here antenna operates for tri- band operation, the operating bands are GSM , PCA and UTMS for antenna geometry -I and WLAN and WiMAX for antenna geometry -II. The fractional bandwidths (FB) after simulation obtain under criterion ( S_11 < -10 dB) are 6.45% for GSM [890-960 MHz], 4.25% for WLAN [2.40 - 2.51 GHz], 6.89% for PCA [1850-1990 MHz], 11.42 % for WiMAX [3.35 - 3.94 GHz], 9.09% for UTMS [1920-2170 MHz] and 18.18% for WLAN [5.02 - 6.63 GHz] and peak gain 2.43 dBi at 5.36 GHz.

Microstrip patch antennas became very popular in mobile and radio wireless communication. This is because of ease of analysis and fabrication, and their attractive radiation characteristics. However, they have some drawbacks of low efficiency, narrow bandwidth and surface wave losses. In order to overcome the limitations of microstrip antennas such as narrow bandwidth (< 5%), lower gain (-6 dB), excitation of surface waves etc, a new solution method, using electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) materials, as substrates has attracted increasing attention. Unlike other methods, this new method utilizes the inherent properties of dielectric materials to enhance microstrip antenna performance. The aim of this book is to design and simulate the new EBG structure operating at 2.96GHz frequency and study the performance of the rectangular microstrip antenna with 2-D planar EBG structure and 2-D planar EBG structure where the substrate is made of by joining two different dielectric materials and effect of gap width of 2-D EBG structure. Those designs were simulated with Ansoft HFSS software.

An analytical method is used to predict the features of the simulation results, implying that within a certain frequency range, negative value of permittivity and permeability is obtained due to metametarials. The S-parameters as a performance matrix with -35.1532dB are obtained from antenna simulations carried on CADFEKO Silverlite version 5.5 and High Frequency Structure Simulator version 11. These parameters are used to retrieve the effective permittivity and permeability. Simulations have been carried out for different shapes of microstrip patch antenna in the microwave regime of Low Earth Orbit and Medium Earth Orbit satellites. Based on the methodology, optimization of structure is proposed for the application of metamaterials as antenna substrate to primarily enhance directivity by minimizing its refractive index.

Transmission and reception of narrow pulses is often impaired by the radiation characteristics of the antenna. Designing RF front ends for UWB systems pose challenges compared to their narrow and wide band counterparts because in addition to having electrically small size, high efficiency and band width, the antenna has to have excellent transient response. The present work investigates the suitability of four novel antenna designs- Square Monopole, Semi-Elliptic Slot, Step and Linear Tapered slot – proposed for UWB systems. In these antennas, multiple resonances in the geometry are matched to UWB by redesigning the ground-patch interfaces. The thesis also proposes a technique to avoid narrow band interference by designing slot resonators in the antenna and its effect on a base band pulse has been studied. Performances of these designs are studied in the frequency and time domains by simulation and experiments. Accounting the resonances in each structure, design guidelines are deduced, allowing their implementation in laminates of any permittivity.

The first edition of “Microstrip Filters for RF/Microwave Applications” was published in 2001. Over the years the book has been well received and is used extensively in both academia and industry by microwave researchers and engineers. From its inception as a manuscript the book is almost 8 years old. While the fundamentals of filter circuits have not changed, further innovations in filter realizations and other applications have occurred with changes in the technology and use of new fabrication processes, such as the recent advances in RF MEMS and ferroelectric films for tunable filters; the use of liquid crystal polymer (LCP) substrates for multilayer circuits, as well as the new filters for dual-band, multi-band and ultra wideband (UWB) applications. Although the microstrip filter remains as the main transmission line medium for these new developments, there has been a new trend of using combined planar transmission line structures such as co-planar waveguide (CPW) and slotted ground structures for novel physical implementations beyond the single layer in order to achieve filter miniaturization and better performance. Also, over the years, practitioners have suggested topics that should be added for completeness, or deleted in some cases, as they were not very useful in practice. In view of the above, the authors are proposing a revised version of the “Microstrip Filters for RF/Microwave Applications” text and a slightly changed book title of “Planar Filters for RF/Microwave Applications” to reflect the aforementioned trends in the revised book.

Technical Report from the year 2013 in the subject Engineering - Communication Technology, grade: A, , course: Electrical Engineering, language: English, abstract: In this report three staircase UWB antennae with WLAN band notch characteristic, each having different ground planes, are presented. These include a Co-Planar Waveguide-fed antenna, a Transmission Line-fed antenna with partial ground plane having a Defected Ground Structure (DGS) and a Transmission Line-fed antenna with slotted ground plane. All the band-notched antennae have rejection characteristics at 5 GHz WLAN band (5.15GHz to 5.35GHz and 5.725GHz to 5.825 GHz) while the antenna with slotted ground plane rejects the 4.9GHZ WLAN band (4.94GHz to 4.99GHz) as well. In all the three antennae the WLAN band is notched by embedding a U-shaped slot in the transmission line.The proposed antennae are carefully designed, simulated and tested in order to fulfill the UWB antennae's pre-defined criteria. The proposed antenna occupies 3.3 and 10 times less chip area than patch and horn antenna, respectively. Furthermore, the performance (in terms of gain, bandwidth for equal footprint size) of proposed antenna is better than previously investigated automotive radar antennas.

The present work makes use of the unique features of fractals such as self similarity and space-filling properties to realize antennas that are characterized by multiband and compact size. The application of the geometric partial arrangement property which known as (Koch) with fourth iteration is adopted in this work. Several tests are conducted to make these antennas operate within the frequency bands (2.4 GHz and 5.8GHz) standards IEEE 802.11 b/g and IEEE 802.11a respectively for the purposes of wireless communication applications. Modeling and performance evaluation of the proposed antennas are analyzed and optimized using CST software package, which utilizes the Finite Integral Technique (FIT) for electromagnetic computation. In this work, new four miniaturized antennas with multiband behavior are proposed. In the present book, the high cross-polarization of the offset parabolic reflector has been suppressed by using a multi-mode matched feed. The concept of matched feed is thoroughly described at the beginning of the book. The multi-mode matched feed has been realized in three different waveguide structures, i.e., rectangular, cylindrical and corrugated structure. The detailed designs of all the three matched feed structures have been presented in the book. Through extensive numerical as well as experimental results, it has been verified that the proposed matched feeds effectively suppress the undesired high cross-polarization of the offset parabolic reflector antenna. The feeds also remove the beam squinting in the secondary radiation pattern of the reflector, when circular polarization is employed. Finally, a few practical applications of the proposed feeds are discussed and the corresponding results are summarized.

The main objective of this book is to develop an antenna operated at 1800MHz GSM band for mobile handset with reduced RF interference towards the user. This is achieved by altering the radiation characteristics of the monopole antenna by modifying its geometry with high impedance resonating structures like split ring resonator, single metal strip and with vertical stripes. It is found that this antenna is radiating all the three quadrants effectively with a null in the forth quadrant. A printed monopole antenna is suitably folded to make a low profile, small size folded antenna. Folding technique is introduced to achieve the compactness and to change the direction of null point. The radiation characteristic of the proposed 3D structure of the ground folded monopole antenna is also modified with a vertical strip printed at the back side of the ground plane. Experimental and simulation investigations on near field radiation characteristics are also carried out to study specific absorption rate. Antennas are simulated with SAM phantom model to estimate specific absorption rate (SAR). Experimental setup is also developed to measure normalized SAR.
