Educating about Social Issues in the 20th and 21st Centuries. A Critical Annotated Bibliography Volume Two

Over the course of the past decade and a half, we, Samuel Totten and Jon E. Pedersen, have co-edited a series of books onteaching and learning about social issues. Our goal has been to build a series that would broadly represent the work thathas been undertaken over the past 110 plus years related to the field of teaching and learning about social issues. As wecreated and added to the series (see for example: Addressing Social Issues in the Classroom and Beyond: The PedagogicalEfforts of Pioneers in the Field; Researching and Teaching Social Issues: The Personal Stories and Pedagogical Efforts ofProfessors of Education; Teaching and Studying Social Issues: Major Programs and Approaches), we came to the conclusionthat the development of an annotated bibliography of the key works (books, chapters, articles, reports, and research)on a wide-range of issues/topics germane to teaching and learning about social issues was a logical addition to the series. In Educating About Social Issues in the 20th and21st Centuries Volume 1: A Critical Annotated Bibliography (which was published in early 2012), the focus was on a host of programs, models, strategies and concernsvis-à-vis teaching and learning about social issues. This new book constitutes Volume Two in the series entitled Educating About Social Issues in the Twentieth andTwenty First Centuries and picks up where Volume One left off.Included in this book are the pioneering works of the following: Boyd Bode, Alan F. Jiri Melich The Politics Multiculturalism or Pragmatic Integration Policy.

In many Western countries, multicultural coexistence and conflict are a fact of life, regardless whether they have 'multiculturalism policies' (MCPs) in place or not. The existence, implementation, and success of such policies are contingent on several factors, including historical, demographic, and social ones, as well as political and economic strategies. Important is a tradition of systematic recognition (or non-recognition) of diverse character of a country's population and its vision of emancipation and integration of ethnic minority groups. The goal of integration of diverse minorities into the society is apparently contradictory and, to a large degree, a practice of multiculturalism goes against genuine inter-cultural integration. This leads to interrelated questions: How much of cultural diversity in a democratic country can be optimally managed, if at all? Which MCPs have a potential to contribute to peaceful and harmonious society and, if societies accept and promote cultural diversity, who and under which conditions will benefit from it? This study explores the many-faceted multiculturalism theme, looking at the cases of Canada and Western Europe.

Working (With/out) the System. Educational Leadership, Micropolitics and Social Justice

A volume in Issues in the Research, Theory, Policy, and Practice of Urban EducationSeries Editors: Denise E. Armstrong, Brock University , and Brenda J. McMahon, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte This edited collection of chapters from invited scholars, explores issues of social justice and micropolitics in educational institutions. More specifically, it examines the ways in which social justice workers navigate, or can navigate, (micro) political systems in their quest to promote social justice. Issues of social justice and micropolitics are particularly important in this day and age as standardizing regimes and polarizing forces continue to erode the already perilous condition of the traditionally disadvantaged. While social justice workers make it a point to acknowledge the plight of the less fortunate, their well-meaning attempts to take action are not always successful. This requires that they acknowledge the realities of the micropolitical environments in which they work, and to take action in these arenas if they are to achieve their social justice goals. The title of the book, Working (With/out) the System, draws attention to the ways in which social justice workers/leaders (teachers, administrators, students, community members) navigate educational institutions and the wider social systems that are not always hospitable to changes that promote social justice. This volume describes the prospects, possibilities and actual practice of working with, working wi...

Baglieri Campo Ambra The challenges of multiculturalism in modern Britain and Germany

Have Britain and Germany failed as multicultural countries? How have multiculturalism and integration been dealt with in the contemporary national debates of both countries and are there affinities that will lead Germany and Britain towards similar political solutions? National identity and the alleged failure of multiculturalism have been in the middle of recent political and cultural debates in European liberal democracies such as Great Britain and Germany. The contemporary debate focuses on immigration, integration, citizenship, racial inequality and human rights, in order to cope with the questions raised by multiculturalism, following the terrorist attacks in New York, Madrid and London. These events have resulted in debates that often included concerns and accusations against the Muslim communities in Europe, coming under new political and security scrutiny. This has led to a new wave of criticism against the concept of multiculturalism. Interestingly, in 2011, Germany and the UK seem to look at this phenomenon in a similar way, with the British Prime Minister David Cameron and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel both claiming that 'Multiculturalism has failed'.

These and other important themes and issues are critically explored by some of Indonesia's foremost social scientists in this seminal work.

Julia Kristeva is one of the most creative and prolific writers to address the personal, social, and political trials of our times. Linguist, psychoanalyst, social and cultural theorist, and novelist, Kristeva's broad interdisciplinary appeal has impacted areas across the humanities and social sciences. S. K. Keltner's book provides the first comprehensive introduction to the breadth of Kristeva's work. In an original and insightful analysis, Keltner presents Kristeva's thought as the coherent development and elaboration of a complex, multidimensional threshold constitutive of meaning and subjectivity. The ‘threshold' indicates Kristeva's primary sphere of concern, the relationship between the speaking being and its particular social and historical conditions; and Kristeva's interdisciplinary approach. Kristeva's vision, Keltner argues, opens a unique perspective within contemporary discourses attentive to issues of meaning, subjectivity, and social and political life. By emphasizing Kristeva's attention to the permeable borders of psychic and social life, Keltner offers innovative readings of the concepts most widely discussed in Kristeva scholarship: the semiotic and symbolic, abjection, love, and loss. She also provides new interpretations of some of the most controversial issues surrounding Kristeva's work, including Kristeva's conceptions of intimacy, social and cultural difference, and Oedipal subjectivity, by contextualizing them within her methodological approach and oeuvre as a whole. Julia Kristeva: Thresholds is an engaging and accessible introduction to Kristeva's theoretical and fictional works that will be of interest to both students and scholars across the humanities and social sciences.

John K. Rhoads Critical Issues in Social Theory

Critical Issues in Social Theory is an analytical survey of persistent controversies that have shaped the field of sociology. It defines, clarifies, and proposes solutions to these "critical issues" through commentary on the writings of such influential social theorists as Hobbes, Marx, Durkeim, Weber, Mead, Merton, Parsons, and Schutz.Instead of being just another history, or another classification of theories, Rhoads's four-part model allows him to focus attention on issues that remain at the core of sociological theory today. First, Rhoads analyzes the controversy over positivism as the proper methodological model for the study of human society. Is there one science, of which sociology is a branch, or do the peculiarities of sociology's subject matter require a modification of the scientific method borrowed from the natural sciences? Rhoads next considers the relationship of individuals to society and its structures. Does society have a mode of existence distinct from its members, or is it merely an abstraction derived from the characteristics of individuals? Third, a discussion of social order raises the question of whether social order is the consequence of rules and their underlying moral values, or the product of continuous construction based on self-interest. Finally, the relative importance of consensus and conflict in social relationships is addressed. Is society better understood as a community united by beliefs, values, and rules, or is the social ...

Does planning in contested cities inadvertedly make the divisions worse? The 60s and 70s saw a strong role of planning, social engineering, etc but there has since been a move towards a more decentralised ‘community planning’ approach. The book examines urban planning and policy in the context of deeply contested space, where place identity and cultural affinities are reshaping cities. Throughout the world, contentions around identity and territory abound, and in Britain, this problem has found recent expression in debates about multiculturalism and social cohesion. These issues are most visible in the urban arena, where socially polarised communities co-habit cities also marked by divided ethnic loyalties. The relationship between the two is complicated by the typical pattern that social disadvantage is disproportionately concentrated among ethnic groups, who also experience a social and cultural estrangement, based on religious or racial identity. Navigating between social exclusion and community cohesion is essential for the urban challenges of efficient resource use, environmental enhancement, and the development of a flourishing economy. The book addresses planning in divided cities in a UK and international context, examining cities such as Chicago, hyper-segregated around race, and Jerusalem, acting as a crucible for a wider conflict. The first section deals with concepts and theories, examining the research literature and situating the issue within the urban challenges of competitiveness and inclusion. Section 2 covers collaborative planning and identifies models of planning, policy and urban governance that can operate in contested space. Section 3 presents case studies from Belfast, Chicago and Jerusalem, examining both the historical/contemporary features of these cities and their potential trajectories. The final section offers conclusions and ways forward, drawing the lessons for creating shared space in a pluralist cities and addressing cohesion and multiculturalism. • Addresses important contemporary issue of social cohesion vs. urban competitiveness • focus on impact of government policies will appeal to practitioners in urban management, local government and regeneration • Examines role of planning in cities worldwide divided by religion, race, socio-economic, etc • Explores debate about contested space in urban policy and planning • Identifies models for understanding contested spaces in cities as a way of improving effectiveness of government policy

This book presents a study of the stability of mechanical systems, i.e. their free response when they are removed from their position of equilibrium after a temporary disturbance. After reviewing the main analytical methods of the dynamical stability of systems, it highlights the fundamental difference in nature between the phenomena of forced resonance vibration of mechanical systems subjected to an imposed excitation and instabilities that characterize their free response. It specifically develops instabilities arising from the rotor–structure coupling, instability of control systems, the self-sustained instabilities associated with the presence of internal damping and instabilities related to the fluid–structure coupling for fixed and rotating structures. For an original approach following the analysis of instability phenomena, the book provides examples of solutions obtained by passive or active methods.

Takinginto account the historical significance of religion and spirituality in the Black community, it isessential for education scholars to cultivate these long-standing connections as a means for advancing contemporary struggles for socialjustice, religiosity in education, and counter-hegemonic praxis. The purpose of this book is to expand our understanding of spirituality and religion as related to the p-20 schooling of Blacks students.Educational scholarship continues to explore the workings of social justice to ameliorate inequities for those who have not been wellserved in schools. A practical guide to analysing partially observed data. Collecting, analysing and drawing inferences from data is central to research in the medical and social sciences. Unfortunately, it is rarely possible to collect all the intended data. The literature on inference from the resulting incomplete data is now huge, and continues to grow both as methods are developed for large and complex data structures, and as increasing computer power and suitable software enable researchers to apply these methods. This book focuses on a particular statistical method for analysing and drawing inferences from incomplete data, called Multiple Imputation (MI). MI is attractive because it is both practical and widely applicable. The authors aim is to clarify the issues raised by missing data, describing the rationale for MI, the relationship between the various imputation models and associated algorithms and its application to increasingly complex data structures. Multiple Imputation and its Application: Discusses the issues raised by the analysis of partially observed data, and the assumptions on which analyses rest. Presents a practical guide to the issues to consider when analysing incomplete data from both observational studies and randomized trials. Provides a detailed discussion of the practical use of MI with real-world examples drawn from medical and social statistics. Explores handling non-linear relationships and interactions with multiple imputation, survival analysis, multilevel multiple imputation, sensitivity analysis via multiple imputation, using non-response weights with multiple imputation and doubly robust multiple imputation. Multiple Imputation and its Application is aimed at quantitative researchers and students in the medical and social sciences with the aim of clarifying the issues raised by the analysis of incomplete data data, outlining the rationale for MI and describing how to consider and address the issues that arise in its application.

Rebecca Overmyer-Velazquez Folkloric Poverty. Neoliberal Multiculturalism in Mexico

The "technocratic revolution" that ushered in the age of neoliberalism in Mexico under the presidency of Carlos Salinas (1988-1994) helped create the conditions for, and the constraints on, a resurgence of activism among the indigenous communities of Mexico. This resurgence was given further impetus by the protests in 1992 against the official celebration of the five hundredth anniversary of Columbus's landing in America and by the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas in 1994. Local, regional, and national indigenous organizations formed to pursue a variety of causes-cultural, economic, legal, political, and social-to benefit Indian peoples in all regions of the country. Folkloric Poverty analyzes the crisis these indigenous political groups faced in Mexico at the turn of the twenty-first century. It tells the story of an indigenous peoples' movement in the state of Guerrero, the Consejo Guerrerense 500 Años de Resistencia Indígena, that gained unprecedented national and international prominence in the 1990s and yet was defunct by 2002. The fate of the Consejo points to the ways that Mexican multiculturalism‚ indigenismo, combined with neoliberal reforms to keep Indians in a political quarantine, effectively limiting their actions and safely isolating their demands on the state.
