Sai Wansai Tracking the Transition

"SAI Wansai is an astute Shan political analyst, who has written extensively on Myanmar's ethnic conflict and political situation. His new book, Tracking the Transition: The Path from Quasi-civilian Rule to Fully Fledged Democracy, brings together his most important articles, and for the first time makes these available to a wider audience. As he points out, after decades of civil war and military rule, there is still a long way to go before ethnic conflict can be solved in Myanmar. Sai Wansai's clear writing provides an excellent guide to navigate through Myanmar's complicated political process to achieve peace and reconciliation. He explains the history of the conflict and conflict dynamics in Myanmar, the key grievances and aspirations of the country's ethnic nationalities, the conceptual differences among the key stakeholders, and he points towards possible solutions. This book is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand ethnic conflict and the current political reform process in Myanmar." Tom Kramer, Transnational Institute (TNI)

Malko Victoria A. The Chechen Wars. Responses in Russia and the United States

Within five years of the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, ethnic conflicts spilled throughout its territory, most of them in the Russian Federation. An analysis of scope and intensity of a conflict with one of Russia's two hundred ethnic minorities is the focus of this book. The conflict in Chechnya erupted into two full-scale wars, fought during the decade of Russia's turbulent transition from communism toward democracy. Using a variety of sources-governmental documents, monographs, diaries of military and political leaders, reports, and contemporary periodicals-the author examines the roots of the conflict and responses to the wars from the media, political parties, and diplomatic circles in Russia and the United States. The Chechen wars have demonstrated the limits of the concept of self-determination for an abused minority population. The military operation in Chechnya has eroded Russian democracy and strengthened those within the military and security forces who call for a return to the old ways. For many in today's Russian elite, the restoration of the lost Soviet empire might be the ultimate objective. The developments in the future deserve the world's attention.

Omid Hejazi National Identity and Cultural Rights

This book is an attempt to explain and assess the liberal nationalist view on the problems of the legitimacy of nationalism and cultural rights. I want to look at some normative theories over the past fifteen years that evaluate 'nationalism' according to the liberal principles. By considering the alleged conflict between the 'minority nation-building' and the 'majority nation-building' in multination countries, I will examine two models for resolving this conflict: 'Multinational Federalism' and 'Transnational Federalism'. I will argue that, though most liberal nationalists support the former model, they fail to provide a convincing normative ground for justifying Multinational Federalism and stopping national minorities from secession. The liberal nationalists' arguments for necessity of nationalism, ironically, undermine their own claim about normative importance of Multinational Federalism in comparison to Transnational Federalism. This is what I call 'the paradox of liberal nationalism'.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2017 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, grade: A, Atlantic International University (School of Business and Economics), course: International Relations, language: English, abstract: This thesis analyses causes of the current South Sudanese civil war that broke out on 15 December 2013. The clash in the Presidential Guards Unit triggered the war when President Salva Kiir, from the Jieng (Dinka) ethnic group, ordered the disarmament of Presidential guards from the Naath (Nuer) ethnic group. He also ordered execution of anyone from the Naath ethnicity, which led to the massacre of more than 20,000 Naath civilians in the capital Juba within two days. In retaliation, the Naath conducted a counterstrike against the government and Jieng ethnic group, and slaughtered the Jieng civilians. This research explores the history, causes, actors and dynamics of the conflict, and Pan-Africanists' view on the causes of African wars, and concludes that the cause of the war is lack of knowledge within the leadership of the ruling party, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement. Lack of knowledge produced poor governance, recklessness, kleptocracy, ethnocentrism, tribalism, loss of vision and lack of adherence to public causes.

Soon after Arend Lijphart and Gerhard Lehmbruch had depicted consociational democracy as a viable alternative to majoritarian forms of democracy, a fierce debate about its wider applicability took root. Lijphart and Lehmbruch had presented the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland as cases of consociational democracies - but would the concept work in countries that are divided more deeply? For a good reason, the issue regained relevance and interest of scholars during the 1990s: Intra-state wars now took their tolls on an unprecedented scale - many of which had an ethnic dimension. It requires no statistical analysis to acknowledge ethnic divisions as one of the most serious sources of today's violent conflicts. In this context, it has been asked whether consociational democracy is a suitable and appropriate model to accommodate the diverse interests and cultures of groups in a multiethnic society. Is it a sustainable model able to prevent conflicts...

Bernard Mayer The Dynamics of Conflict. A Guide to Engagement and Intervention

The Dynamics of Conflict When it was published in 2000, Bernie Mayer's The Dynamics of Conflict Resolution quickly became one of the seminal works in the conflict resolution field. The book bridged the gap between abstract theoretical approaches and practical handbooks and became an immensely valuable and accessible resource for experienced and novice practitioners, as well as for professors and students of conflict management who needed a deep yet practical view of conflict and methods for dealing with it. The Dynamics of Conflict is the second edition of Mayer's classic book. While building on the strengths of the first edition, this thoroughly revised and updated book keeps pace with the most current trends and research in the field and explores four key concepts: interactional dynamics, system dynamics, culture and conflict, and conflict engagement. Like the first edition, the focus of the new edition is on the ways we can productively think about conflict and conflict intervention, rather than on specific techniques and processes. Mayer presents ideas about conflict as a set of conceptual tools that build on one another and contribute to a multifaceted view of conflict and conflict intervention but that also stand on their own. Filled with illustrative examples, the book draws from the author's thirty years of experience with interpersonal, family, community, organizational, labor management, environmental, public policy, and international disputes and includes instances of conflicts that have been in the news. In addition, this vital resource contains information on the most important work that has been done in the past decade on culture, systems, and conflict engagement and shows how conflict concepts apply to new technologies such as online communication and conflict resolution efforts on the Web. In the concluding chapter Mayer explores how conflict intervention efforts fit into more general values about peace, democracy, and social justice, and the personal impact that conflict work as a field has on conflict specialists.

Examining the cases of South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria and Cyprus, this research investigates to what extent the European Union is committed to ethnic conflict resolution. Hypothesizing that EU direct involvement in the conflict resolution process is more successful than the mediated efforts and the failure of the European Union to assist territorial entities sharpens the secessionist trends, the theories of third party intervention, credible commitment theory and the costs and benefits theory form the theoretical framework of this research. The review of the literature formed basis to understand the EU policies and tools deployed for the conflict prevention in the cases selected, on which the applied theoretical framework created strong bases to make conclusions. The EU direct involvement in the conflict resolution process is more effective. Rejecting the second hypothesis the argument becomes valid emphasizing that EU assistance, substantial or not, does not affect the conflicting territories' decision to secede.

Petar Cholakov Ethnic Entrepreneurs Unmasked. Political Institutions and Ethnic Conflicts in Contemporary Bulgaria

Based on an institutional approach to ethnic conflict, Petar Cholakov highlights the idiosyncrasies of, and the challenges to, inter-ethnic relations in Bulgaria. He traces the emergence of the currently implemented Bulgarian ethnic model in its interconnection with the party system, and especially examines the ideology, political support, and mobilization tools employed by the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) party as well as the populist radical right. Cholakov presents findings from case studies on Bulgaria's Roma, crime, and politics. He analyzes Bulgarian integration policies and assesses the role of Bulgaria's judiciary as well as contemporary antidiscrimination legislation, in particular, of the 2004 Protection against Discrimination Act. The monograph peruses decisions of, among others, the European Court of Human Rights and uncovers patterns of discrimination against Roma. By reverse engineering the Bulgarian ethnic model, Cholakov reveals how the institutions operate and comes to the conclusion that inter-ethnic peace has been entrusted to a defective mechanism which institutionalizes ethnic cleavage and politicizes identity. On the basis of his in-depth analysis, the author makes a prognosis for the future of ethnic relations in Bulgaria and provides recommendations for reforms.

Gary Clayton Anderson Ethnic Cleansing and the Indian. The Crime That Should Haunt America

Mention “ethnic cleansing” and most Americans are likely to think of “sectarian” or “tribal” conflict in some far-off locale plagued by unstable or corrupt government. According to historian Gary Clayton Anderson, however, the United States has its own legacy of ethnic cleansing, and it involves American Indians. In Ethnic Cleansing and the Indian, Anderson uses ethnic cleansing as an analytical tool to challenge the alluring idea that Anglo-American colonialism in the New World constituted genocide. Beginning with the era of European conquest, Anderson employs definitions of ethnic cleansing developed by the United Nations and the International Criminal Court to reassess key moments in the Anglo-American dispossession of American Indians.Euro-Americans’ extensive use of violence against Native peoples is well documented. Yet Anderson argues that the inevitable goal of colonialism and U.S. Indian policy was not to exterminate a population, but to obtain land and resources from the Native peoples recognized as having legitimate possession. The clashes between Indians, settlers, and colonial and U.S. governments, and subsequent dispossession and forcible migration of Natives, fit the modern definition of ethnic cleansing. To support the case for ethnic cleansing over genocide, Anderson begins with English conquerors’ desire to push Native peoples to the margin of settlement, a violent project restrained by the Enlightenment belief that all humans possess a “natural right” to life...

Societies erect monuments to commemorate heroes or remember crucial and significant events in their histories. Set in stone, they become part of the public landscape. While some fade into obscurity, others assume an ever greater role in the society's understanding of the past, and perhaps more importantly, the present. This work analyzes the history and impact of two monuments in Transylvania, a multi-ethnic community, whose national affiliation changed after World War I. This work tells the story of the attempts to use, manipulate, and re-imagine these monuments and turn public space into another, more subtle, battleground in the conflict between a new state and a historical ethnic minority. The work also analyzes larger issues concerning how states could deal with disputed monuments and defuse conflict about public space.

Drawing on the influential role of cinema in politics on the Indian subcontinent, and the perceived shared identity of the Tamil communities in Sri Lanka and India, the book researches the film in relation to the conflict. It discusses the differences in conception of the Indian Tamil identity and the Sri Lankan Tamil identity (in the film), and argues that the Indian Tamil is represented as politically and culturally superior and more empowered than the Sri Lankan Tamil. Using existing literature on identity formation and the socio-cultural history of Tamil identities of Sri Lanka and India as a reference point, the representation of the two Tamil identities in the film are analysed.

Within theeducational context, this is a key concern, and forms the basis of the research presented in thisvolume within a critical, comparative analysis. The Global Doing Democracy Research Project(GDDRP), which currently has some 70 scholars in over 20 countries examining how educatorsdo democracy, provides the framework in which diverse scholars explore a host of concerns related to democracy and democraticeducation, including the impact of neoliberalism, political literacy, critical engagement, teaching and learning for and about democracy, social justice, and the meaning of power/power relations within the educational context.Ultimately, the contributors of this book collectively ask: can there be democracy without a critically engaged education, and, importantly, what role do educators play in this context and process? Why many educators in diverse contexts believe that they areunable, dissuaded and/or prevented from doing thick democratic education is problematized in this book but the authors also seek toillustrate that, despite the challenges, barriers and concerns about doing democracy in education, something can, and should, be done todevelop, cultivate and ingratiate schools and society with more meaningful democratic practices and processes. This book breaks new ground by using a similar empirical me...

Lloyd S. Kramer Nationalism in Europe and America. Politics, Cultures, and Identities since 1775

Examining the history of nationalism's pervasive influence on modern politics and cultural identities, Lloyd Kramer discusses how nationalist ideas gained emotional and cultural power after the revolutionary upheavals in the late eighteenth-century Atlantic world. Nationalism in Europe and America analyzes the multiple historical contexts and intellectual themes that have shaped modern nationalist cultures, including the political claims for national sovereignty, the emergence of nationalist narratives in historical writing and literature, the fusion of nationalism and religion, and the overlapping conceptions of gender, families, race, and national identities. Kramer emphasizes the similarities in American and European nationalist thought, showing how European ideas about land, history, and national destiny flourished in the United States while American ideas about national independence and political rights reappeared among European nationalists and also influenced the rise of anticolonial nationalisms in twentieth-century Asia and Africa. By placing nationalist ideas and conflicts within the specific, cross-cultural framework of Atlantic history and extending his analysis to the twentieth-century world wars, Kramer offers readers a thoughtful perspective on nationalism's enduring political and cultural importance throughout the modern world.

David Hinds Ethnopolitics and Power Sharing in Guyana. History and Discourse

This book on Guyana can serve as a useful guide at large for understanding the problem of governance, democracy and society in ethnically divided countries and how to create a framework aimed at solving the problem. From 1950 to the present Guyana has experienced the worst of ethnically divided societies: ethnic violence, authoritarian rule, democratic exclusion and the general politics of revenge. However, it has also experienced moments of ethic solidaritythe ore, a 1955 nationalist movement that managed to hold the ethnic groups under the same electoral party, and the 1974-1992 anti-dictatorial movement whose success was premised primarily on ethnic solidarity. Finally, the ethnically segmented societies has created for itself the opportunities for power sharing, which holds out the promise for the success of the approach."This book is an insightful and learned treatise on the problems of governance in a multi-ethnic state. Hinds delves in detail into the intricacies of communal conflict which bedevils the Third World."Ralph Premdas, Professor of Public Policy, University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago."David Hinds is on top of the literatureabout powersharing and applies it sensitively to the Caribbean in general and Guyana in particular. Leaders, research shows, inevitably face conflict in their organizations and spend a large portion of their days resolving conflict. Different leaders resolve conflict in different manners. Following previous research that examined personality type and conflict management styles, this dissertation study explored the relationship between leadership styles-Transactional, Transformational, and Laissez-faire-and conflict management styles-Competing, Collaborating, Compromising, Avoiding, and Accommodating. This study found many positive correlations between leadership styles and conflict management styles. For example, Transactional Leadership and the Competing conflict management style were positively correlated, as were Transformational Leadership and the Collaborating conflict management style. Additional insight regarding leadership styles and conflict management styles may help leaders of organizations more efficiently and more effectively resolve conflict. Whereas this study is important, future researchers should explore the implications of the current study to corroborate any implied relationships that may exist between leadership styles and conflict management styles.

It has been said that the thought processes and attitudes of Japanese people are distinctly different from those of people of the Western culture. From the perspective of an anthropologist and a Japanese expatriate, the author argues that the thoughts and attitudes of Japanese are profoundly correlated with pressure to conform to social norms and nationalism, which are not usually discussed or apparent to outsiders. This paper describes Japanese culture and attempts to explain the conceptual differences in some major ideas between Japanese and Westerns. It also analyzes how Japanese language, education, and religions intertwine with each other, function, and are used as ideologies for building Japanese nationalism and shaping Japanese people. This paper is divided into four major sections: (1) The People and Nation of Japan, (2) The Religion of Japan, (3) The Socialization of Japanese Values and Nationalism, and (4) Social Conformity and Nationalism Today.

Clive Barnett Priority of Injustice. Locating Democracy in Critical Theory

This original and ambitious work looks anew at a series of intellectual debates about the meaning of democracy. Clive Barnett engages with key thinkers in various traditions of democratic theory and demonstrates the importance of a geographical imagination in interpreting contemporary political change.Debates about radical democracy, Barnett argues, have become trapped around a set of oppositions between deliberative and agonistic theories--contrasting thinkers who promote the possibility of rational agreement and those who seek to unmask the role of power or violence or difference in shaping human affairs. While these debates are often framed in terms of consensus versus contestation, Barnett unpacks the assumptions about space and time that underlie different understandings of the sources of political conflict and shows how these differences reflect deeper philosophical commitments to theories of creative action or revived ontologies of "the political." Rather than developing ideal theories of democracy or models of proper politics, he argues that attention should turn toward the practices of claims-making through which political movements express experiences of injustice and make demands for recognition, redress, and re pair. By rethinking the spatial grammar of discussions of public space, democratic inclusion, and globalization, Barnett develops a conceptual framework for analyzing the crucial roles played by geographical processes in generating and processing co...

Fadinger Rainer The expired conflict

In the summer of 1960 Cyprus became an independent republic for the first time in its eventful history under various colonial rulers. This, however, was the moment when the trouble actually started as the two ethnic groups of the new country - Greek and Turkish Cypriots - had significantly different perceptions of how their common state should function. While the Republic of Cyprus broke apart only 14 years into its existence, these different perceptions have remained until the present day. "The Expired Conflict" provides a compact account of the various stages of this inter-ethnic conflict and focuses on the question whether there are any options left that could possibly lead to a settlement; a settlement with consequences far beyond the borders of this "unsinkable aircraft carrier" of the eastern Mediterranean. The book offers a detailed insight into the contentious issues and shows how little these issues have changed after almost forty years of partition. By now, the author argues, the conflict has significantly exceeded its "expiry date", only to live up to its questionable reputation of being what scholars have termed the "diplomats' graveyard".

This book focuses on the Ogoni conflict in the Niger Delta of Nigeria. There exists abundant scholarly materials on the conflict and wide-ranging prognostications on its causes. However, scholarship has been bogged down in controversy over whether economic self-interest or legitimate desire to protect community and environment propelled the conflict. The book seeks to extend scholarship on the Ogoni conflict by testing the analytical utility of a conflict model, Marginalized Violent Internal Conflict (MVIC), to attempts to fully comprehend the nature of the conflict. The author argues that the model, developed by Dan Tschirgi following a study of the Gamaa Al' Islamiyya (Egypt) and the Zapatista (Mexico) conflicts, provides better understanding of the causes and dynamics of the Ogoni conflict.

Kodjo Tchioffo Mali Conflict of 2012-2013. A Critical Assessment

Between 2012 and 2013, Mali has gone through the most challenging period of its history as a nation-state. From a praised democracy, the country almost collapsed after the onset of a complex set of rebellions that threatened to divide or completely erase it from the map. This book provides a three-dimensional analysis of the conflict drivers as well a deep assessment of the conflict resolution mechanisms that were set up to restore Mali control over its territory. From the outbreak of MNLA insurgent attacks in early 2012, the crafting of AZAWAD,the fluidity of MNLA alliance with ANSAR DINE, MUJAO and AQIM, the coup d'état of Sanogo and downfall of Amani Toumani Touré, the responses of ECOWAS, the 'core countries' (Algeria, Mauritania), the African Union, the role of France to the re-hatting of AFISMA and launch of MINUSMA, all crusty details and facets of the crisis are meticulously scrutinized. This book is a must-have for academics, diplomats and strategists interested the new conflict dynamics in Mali and West Africa in a global era.

Hartwin Maas Conflict. - Reality of management and organizational behavior

Essay from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Bremen, 9 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Conflict can be regarded as a reality of management and organizational behavior. Most of us will understand what is commonly meant by organizational conflict and be aware of its existence and effects. Yet conflict is another term which can be defined and interpreted in a number of ways. We can see conflict as behavior intended to obstruct the achievement of some other person's goals. Conflict is based on the incompatibility of goals and arises from opposing behaviors. It can be viewed at the individual, group or organizational level.Conflict is not necessarily good or bad but inevitable feature of organization life. Even if organizations have taken great care to try and avoid conflict it will still occur. Conflict will continue to emerge despite attempts by management to suppress it.Conflict, if it appears, means that the organization is alive. The group tries to solve now and then quite difficult tasks by using different ideas. It can significantly improve the company's performance when it is oriented on the task solving. But it can very quickly move from task to the people and their emotions. In this case the influence of the conflict on the organization may be very destructive. And everyone should realize that.

Viola Neufeld Grateful for the Fight. Using inner conflict to transform yourself and your relationships

"Don't waste your conflict."Grateful for the Fight goes beyond resolving conflict to using conflict to transform lives. Neufeld cautions that the urgency in today's society to resolve conflict might be a sophisticated way of bypassing the true value of conflict. If we let it, conflict can be our ally-an unusual window into the self. By investigating our fears and releasing them, we stand to make a true and lasting change that will improve our daily lives and every one of our relationships. The premise of Grateful for the Fight, Neufeld's first book, is that if we have the necessary fight with ourselves, we won't be having unnecessary fights with others-and we will be more equipped to have the necessary ones. Using real case scenarios and personal experiences, Neufeld demonstrates how using outer conflict to work through inner conflict points to a greater capacity for growth and resilience in uncomfortable situations. If you're ready to heal personal and mutual sensitivities, gain greater inner peace, and enjoy a relationship with more intimacy and vitality, welcome! You've come to the right place....

A clash between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Mountainous Karabakh has developed into one of the most violent conflicts re-emerged in late 1980s in Eurasia. More than a decade earlier, President Carter's advisor on National Security Zbigniew Brzezinski wrote: "The ethnic question in USSR will apparently gain sharper forms, than racial crisis in United States." Indeed, the war over Nagorno- Karabakh had by 1996 produced about 1,700,000 refugees and internally displaced people and killed over 55,000. Though, the cease-fire agreement between Azerbaijani and Armenian sides was achieved in 1994, the consequences of this war still remain unsolved, creating therefore a great potential for the regional instability. Both countries have experienced a tremendous negative impact on their economies, thus unable to unlock the full potential of the regional development and yield benefits from the Caspian oil and gas.

CCNY—and Me describes the conflict between equal opportunity and academic excellence in American higher education. Once known as a “proletarian Harvard,” the City College of New York admitted the children of immigrants solely on the basis of achievement until a policy called Open Admissions was initiated in 1970, which offered a second chance to the disadvantaged of Harlem and other deprived neighborhoods.Emerging from the cultural revolution of the 1960s, Open Admissions tested the very meaning of public education in our democracy. As chairman of the English department, dean of humanities, and vice president for development at CCNY, David Rosen is a central figure in this conflict—torn between a beautiful, charismatic woman who is committed to the policy and a brilliant president who intends to control it so that he can transform CCNY into an urban educational model for other cities. The arc of Rosen’s absolute commitment to reconciling Open Admissions and the Urban Educational Model and his growing skepticism of their efficacy provides a human drama that cuts to the core of American democracy.

Throughout human history people have moved across national borders. With the advent of globalization, they are now moving in record numbers in search of greater security or better livelihoods. Diasporas have become an ever important and visible presence in the modern world. Their existence has sometimes resulted in violence and ethnic conflict, and on other occasions they have been peacefully assimilated into the culture and citizenship of their chosen country. This comprehensive new book seeks to explain why Diaspora communities are increasing as never before. In an accessible and engaging introduction to the field, Milton Esman looks closely at the difference in the reception of Diaspora communities throughout the world, and the responses of those communities to their new nations. By focusing on ten examples of contemporary Diasporas from Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, the book describes and illustrates the problems confronting immigrant communities as they attempt to protect their inherited culture, while coping with the demands and the opportunities they encounter in their adopted country. The book pays particular attention to the types of conflicts that arise from the development of Diaspora communities, and the consequences that these conflicts can have on the international community. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars taking courses in international relations, political sociology, ethnic politics and conflict studies.
