In the present book, an attempt has been made to removal of dyes from textile waste water in industries and how this waste water can be reused. Ion exchange method and batch adsorption method is the solution of removal of dyes from waste water and can often use and easy to investigate the result in laboratory and industries. Textile waste water from different textile industries of Ahmadabad region(India) have been selected. The porous polymeric adsorbent like amberlite XAD-2 and Duelite-171 have been selected for the removal of dyes. Parameters like adsorption equilibrium, initial concentration, effect of pH, effect of resin dosage, effect of contact time have been investigated intensively.Standard parameters can be developed to remove different types of dyes from industrial waste water and can make filter plantation for dye removal from waste effluent. Thus it may be possible to reuse for industrial purpose or other domestic uses. Dyes are harmful for human beings and causes pollution of soil. If we can remove them really, it will major help for survival of green and clean earth. It also concluded that this type of plants can be established for the better recovery of dyes

Removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater by adsorption on activated carbon and synthetic resins has been widely studied. Though activated carbon is an ideal adsorbent for organic matter due to its organophillic character, high cost of preparation and regeneration is a limiting factor for their large-scale use in wastewater treatment. This has prompted the use of many novel materials as adsorbents. The present work was aimed at developing a low cost adsorbent from the mature leaves of the Neem (Azadirachta indica)tree. The objectives were to convert dry, mature Neem leaves into a powder (Neem Leaf Powder, NLP), characterize the adsorbent (NLP) by spectroscopic and other methods, test the effectiveness of NLP as an adsorbent for removal of micro-pollutants such as dyes (methylene blue, Congo red, brilliant green) and metal ions (Cd(II), Cr(VI) and Pb(II)) from an aqueous medium, and determine the influence of various factors such as concentration, pH, temperature, and agitation time, etc., on adsorption. Both batch and column adsorption processes were applied with significant achievements.

Biosorption of direct dyes through rice husk biosorbent is effective method.In this project four dyes are used.The maximum biosorption was obtained at high initial dyes concentration, low biosorbent dose and low pH values for all dyes. In this research, the influence of electrolytes, heavy metals and surfactants on the removal of direct dyes (50 mg/L) was also examined. Industrial effluents were also removed by rice husk efficiently. Sorption/desorption studies showed that the rice husk biosorbent could be reused successfully and efficiently up to three cycles with four dyes.

Disperse dyes are the most common allergens among textile dyes. It is not known whether the purified dyes, impurities in the commercial dyes, or metabolites are the actual sensitisers. Moreover, it is not known whether those disperse dyes that are now present in test series are actually used in textile dyeing today. The aim of this work was A) to evaluate the significance of the impurities found in the commercial dyes Disperse Orange 1 and Disperse Yellow 3 and their potential metabolites from azo reduction regarding allergy; B) to investigate the sensitising capacity of Disperse Orange 1 and its metabolites and their cross-reactivity to Disperse Yellow 3, its metabolites, and p-phenylenediamine; and C) to determine whether eight disperse dyes, hitherto the most widely quoted as allergenic, are still used in textiles sold in various countries all over the world. Evaluation of the many published studies on contact allergy to disperse dyes used for dyeing textiles was also performed. These investigations provided interesting results, which could be useful for professionals working in dermatology, contact allergology, toxicology fields as well as to textile industry chemists.

The effectiveness of ripe Musa sapientum (MSR) and ripe Musa cardaba (MCR) peels in the removal of Cd2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ ions was investigated. The amount of metal ions sorbed depended on the metal ion - adsorbent contact time, ion concentration and adsorbent weight. Weight of adsorbent was varied between 0.1 - 0.4g; contact time, 5 - 25 minutes; and ion concentration, 0.01 - 0.04M. The results indicated that Musa sapientum (Ripe) showed higher percentage sorption in removing metal ions from waste water than Musa cardaba (Ripe) peels. The peak percentage sorption of metal ions by MSR peel waste are; Cd2+ (99.95%), Fe2+ (100%), Pb2+ (100%), Zn2+ (99.92%) while metal ions by MCR peel waste was; Cd2+ (99.74%), Fe2+ (99.83%), Pb2+ (100%), Zn2+ (99.60%). The results obtained above showed that both adsorbent species are favourable for sorption and removal of the test heavy metals from their aqueous environment. Nevertheless, ripe Musa sapientum (MSR) is highly recommended for both Fe2+ and Pb2+ uptake due to its sorption capacity and efficiency.

Increased industrial activity has created an undesirable chemical pollution in air, water, and soil. On the urge of urbanisation, the use of synthetic dyes is increasing largely and its untreated effluent release causes serious environmental pollution affecting water bodies by disturbing the aquatic ecosystem, soil, plants, animals, humans. The recalcitrant nature of these dyes limits its treatment using conventional methods wherein biological methods using microorganisms are reported to completely mineralize the dyes lowering the release of degradation products. The present work focuses on the biodegradation of synthetic dyes by isolating bacteria from a dyeing unit. Soil samples from the dye contaminated soils was collected, its degradation potentiality was observed using three major dye of studies congo red, brilliant green and methylene blue within 24 hr incubation. Maximum decoloarized dye (congo red and brilliant green) were chosen, serially diluted to 10-5 and plated to obtain two distinct colonies from decolorized congo red (CR1, CR2) and three distinct colonies from decolorized brilliant green (BG1, BG2, BG3). Faisalabad is known as a city of textile not only in Pakistan but also all over the world. Several textile processing units are in operation in the surroundings of the city, which are releasing a substantial amount of azo dyes into the wastewater streams in the surroundings of these textile units.The discharge of these contaminants is considered to be a potential threat to the environment because of their hazardous nature. Thus, this study was undertaken to isolate the bacteria possessing high potential to degrade azo dyes from the wastewater discharged by the textile units. A total of 150 bacterial strains were isolated from these wastewater samples using minimal salt medium spiked with Reactive Blue ZBLN azo dye. Results revealed that some bacterial strains were able to decolorize 8 different dyes almost within 6 hours. Thus, the isolated bacterial strains have the potential to remove a variety of dyes from the liquid culture, which could be used to develop a biotreatment strategy for cleanup of the industrial wastewater prior to their discharge into wastewater streams of the surrounding area.

Present study is an effort to develop low cost method to remove highly toxic heavy metal i.e. Chromium (VI) from wastewater. Cr (VI) is used in many industries such as metal finishing, pigments, dyes, textile dyeing, chromium tanning, and wood preserving, causes serious health and environmental effect. Cr (VI) is mutagenic, teratogenic and carcinogenic in nature which modifies the DNA transcription process causing important chromosomic aberrations. Strong exposure to Cr (VI) causes cancer of the digestive tract and lungs, epigastic pain, nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhea and hemorrhage. Thus, several methods were used to remove Cr (VI) from industrial wastewater which are cost intensive. . In the present study, an adsorbent was prepared from Lapsi (Choerospondias axillaris) seed stones which are easily available in Nepal and could be an economically viable method for the removal of Cr (VI) from industrial wastewater.

Azo dyes are extensively used in textile, dyeing, printing, paper, leather, plastics, paints and cosmetics industries. Disposal of these dyes into environment cause serious damage, since they may significantly affect the photosynthetic activity of hydrophytes by reducing light penetration, solubility of gases and also they may be toxic and carcinogenic due to their breakdown products. Biological methods have received increasing interest because of their cost effectiveness, less sludge formation, diverse metabolic pathways, versatility of microorganisms and eco-friendly. The ubiquitous nature of bacteria makes them invaluable tools in effluent treatment. The effect of various physico-chemical parameters (Temperature, pH, carbon source, dye concentration, static and shaking conditions) on dye decolorization by the bacterial isolate were investigated. The effect of various redox mediators on dye decolorization was also investigated using Reactive Blue 3R dye as model compound with absorbance maxima at 510 nm.

Organic and Inorganic pollutants from a number of sources are introduced into the water reservoirs limiting the usability and placing burden on natural resources. This manuscript is an attempt based on the applied bench scale research proposing novel adsorbents for the removal of aqueous pollutants. Nitrates and Phenols are persistent in the media and are difficult to be removed. Adsorption offers a viable and technological doable option for decontamination of industrial pollutants. Nanomaterials based on silica and alumina are synthesized using different procedures and to determine the efficacy of these small particles, meso sized materials are also applied for comparison. Twelve series of batch experiment was conducted at variables of contact time, pH of the medium, adsorbent dose, and adsorbate concentration. More research in this direction is required as nanotechnology has the potential to be equally applied for remediation. This piece of work can serve a guideline for researchers in the field of synthetic chemistry, environmentalists, and policy makers.

The treatment of highly colored wastewater containing hazardous industrial chemicals and dyes is one of the growing needs of the present time. The conventional wastewater treatment does not always satisfactorily cleanse the wastewater containing dyes. In order to cleanse water of these extra-stable organics, so-called advance oxygen processes (AOPs) have been developed. The aim of these methods is to mineralize the pollutants to CO2, H2O and mineral acids and salts. Titanium dioxide photocatalysis belongs to the group of AOPs and has been extensively studied over the last 20 years. The use of TiO2 as slurries in wastewater treatment has some disadvantages: the separation of fine particles is slow and penetration of light is limited. These problems can be minimized by supporting TiO2 on various materials. The goals of present work were: (1) preparation of immobilized TiO2 films by various techniques and their characterization; (2) study the photocatalytic degradation of aqueous amaranth solution using the prepared TiO2 films; (3) study the combined effect of photodegradation and adsorption; (4) comparing the performance of prepared films.
