Gideon Abu, Chidiebere Egenonu Microbiome Antibiograms in Pollution Monitoring of Water Resources

Antibiotic resistance patterns of bacterial microbiomes isolated from the New Calabar River were used to build up models on the possible effects of environmental pollutants on antibiotic resistance. The microbiomes were obtained from water and sediment samples collected at georeferenced sites on the river. This is the basis of the microbiome biogeochemico-graphic information system (MBCGIS). A combination of nutritional and physicochemical factors is presented as support for the existence of microbiome antibiograms in ecosystems challenged with environmental pollutants.High incidence of antibiotic resistance in environments with pronounced industrial and human activities, suggest possible effects of pollutants on the ecosystem. A weak correlation (r = 0.28) between incidence of antibiotic resistance and faecal coliforms implies that the antibiotic resistance patterns of microbiomes may be due to factors that are not linked to faecal pollution. The presence of chemical pollutants may contribute to the risk of increased antibiotic resistance in the environment. Sustainable development demands rigorous legislation for the protection of natural water resources.

Document from the year 2013 in the subject Biology - Micro- and Molecular Biology, , language: English, abstract: Antimicrobial resistance remains, more than ever, a key issue for medical microbiology. The development of antibiotic resistance by bacteria is an evolutionary inevitability, a convincing demonstration of their ability to adapt to adverse environmental conditions. Some Gram-positive organisms are extremely adaptable and rapidly develop resistance, whereas others have not developed good strategies to overcome antibiotics. Staphylococci and enterococci, in particular are associated with clinically relevant resistance. The epithet of superbugs, if one can define these as bacterial pathogens resistant to almost all clinically available agents, can be truly applied to resistant strains of Gram-positive species, especially to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and to glycopeptide- or vancomycinresistant enterococci (GRE or VRE).

Antibiotic resistance of the bacteria has become the most important issue all over the world. This is not only important in medical area but is also questioned in food production industry. Enterococci are more beneficial effective bacteria in food industry due to their esterolytic, lipolytic activities in cheese, sausage and other fermented foods. In addition, they are used as starter cultures in fermented foods and used as probiotic in human and animal health. However, they are not considered GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) microorganisms in food production sector because of their acquired antibiotic especially vancomycin resistance abilities and virülence genes as well as being the causes of untreatable nosocomial infections in hospital settings. This book provides, genetic diversity between food and clinical based enterococci to understand dissemination of vancomycin resistance. In addition, the correlations between virülence genes and vancomycin resistance have analysed in this book. The analysis may help some light on the role of food enterococci related dissemination of virülence genes and vancomycin resistance for professionals both food and clinical microbiologists.

Ruming Li Genetics on Resistance to Maize Kernel Infection by Aspergillus Flavus

Maize kernel infection by Aspergillus flavus and later aflatoxin contaminatuion are worldwide problems in production and storage. Genetic resistance to A. flavus is most cost-effective to minimize the loss to kernels. To study the inheritance of A. flavus resistance, maize diallel and half-sib family crosses were made and genetic effects analyzed for percent kernel infection (PKI) rates using MIKI. Highly significant GCA, SCA and reciprocal effects were found. Two parents had desirable GCA effects on enhancing the average resistance performance in hybrid progeny. Three crosses had consistently negative SCA effects over year. They revealed that genetic resistance to kernel infection by A. flavus existed in maize and was identifiable and exploitable. Both diallel and half-sib analyses agreed and confirmed genotypic, additive and dominance effects. Lab-based PKI compared with the field-based demonstrated that it was more effective in screening for resistant maize germplasm. This study is instructive to breeders, geneticists, and pathologists in that these methods can be realistic solutions to identifying desired genes and breeding for genetic resistance.

Change, either evolutionary or revolutionary happens every moment of our lives. During emergencies, it happens faster than our abilities to record, analyze, and respond to resulting change. Within an emergency realm, everyone has a story to tell; individual stories change the whole community, neighboring communities, or even inspire the world. Other stories will be archived somewhere under a pile of personal tales or totally forgotten. This book proposes the development of a new comprehensive online emergency reporting solution that facilitates information gathering, verification, structuring, and sharing to build knowledge products based on a new communication model that includes all actors in natural or human-based crisis. The model explores the interrelations between big events, humans, politics, information, and technology with lessons drawn from the Arab Spring, Haiti, Japan, and more.

Daniela Bradutanu RESISTANCE TO CHANGE - A NEW PERSPECTIVE. A Textbook for Managers Who Plan to Implement a Change

The intention for this book is to present the resistance to change phenomenon from a new perspective. The term resistance is complex and very often misinterpreted. Change leaders should adapt their perspectives on this subject and try to see resistance from a positive angle as well. By just changing the prospect of analyzing it, managers could experience a greater success in implementing new changes and effectively attract more employees onto their side.Instead of trying to eliminate or suppress employees' resistance, managers should rather use their reactions in a positive framework. Resistance may be useful as feedback and therefore, managers can use it to improve and refine the organizational change process.

Healthcare professionals, including doctors, pharmacists and nurses, are often confronted with patients who use over-the-counter (OTC) herbal medicinal products and food supplements. While taking responsibility for one’s own health and treatment options is encouraged, many patients use these products based on limited (and sometimes inaccurate) information from non-scientific sources, such as the popular press and internet. There is a clear need to offer balanced, well-informed advice to patients, yet a number of studies have shown that, generally, conventionally trained health practitioners consider their knowledge about herbal medicinal products and supplements to be weak. Phytopharmacy fills this knowledge gap, and is intended for use by the busy pharmacist, nurse, or doctor, as well as the ‘expert patient’ and students of pharmacy and herbal medicine. It presents clear, practical and concise monographs on over a hundred popular herbal medicines and plant-based food supplements. Information provided in each monograph includes: • Indications • Summary and appraisal of clinical and pre-clinical evidence • Potential interactions • Contraindications • Possible adverse effects An overview of the current regulatory framework is also outlined, notably the EU Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive. This stipulates that only licensed products or registered traditional herbal medicinal products (THRs), which have assured quality and safety, can now legally be sold OTC. Monographs are included of most of the major herbal ingredients found in THRs, and also some plant-based food supplements, which while not strictly medicines, may also have the potential to exert a physiological effect.

India is especially suitable for agricultural products, its vast plains containing alluvial soil with rich natural contents. The major economy of India is based on agricultural products. The green revolution in India brought high hopes for Indian farmers. Several new scientific information helped crop production to grow by leaps and bounds: the more researches, the more intricacies. Further knowledge of pests makes scientists consider several new solutions. The use of chemicals was immediately adopted to decimate the population of pests and, at first, good results were obtained. But later on, harmful effects of the pesticides became known. It was realized later on that the regular use of chemicals in pesticides is extremely dangerous for human health.Generally, chemical pesticides are used to curb the harmful effects of insects and pests. But the immediate gain of this process has an adverse effect on the environment in the long run. Regular use of chemicals leads to insecticide resistance. Then, biodiversity is distributed by pest resurgence and pesticide residues. So, the immediate gain of one generation creates serious problems for the next generation. To sustain agriculture towards its natural mode some new solutions are to be traced. The solution to reduce pesticides is present in the preference for biological management. Predators and parasitoids may be used as natural enemies. In order to gain control over the thrips pests by less harmful means for the agricultural crop...

These two books are primarily a historical review of the literature which develops the cancer protocol through nutrition. I review the scientific literature on cancer research and the nutritional products that claim to healing cancer. It is a historical review showing how since 1950 (starting with Max Gerson, MD) there is a clear record of people being healed of cancer through a vegetarian diet and related methods like fasting, and juicing. Emerging from cognitive behavioural traditions, mindfulness and acceptance-based therapies hold promise as new evidence-based approaches for helping people distressed by the symptoms of psychosis. These therapies emphasise changing the relationship with unusual and troublesome experiences through cultivating experiential openness, awareness, and engagement in actions based on personal values. In this volume, leading international researchers and clinicians describe the major treatment models and research background of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Person-Based Cognitive Therapy (PBCT), as well as the use of mindfulness, in individual and group therapeutic contexts. The book contains discrete chapters on developing experiential interventions for voices and paranoia, conducting assessment and case formulation, and a discussion of ways to work with spirituality from a metacognitive standpoint. Further chapters provide details of how clients view their experiences of ACT and PBCT, as well as offering clear protocols based on clinical practice. This practical and informative book will be of use to clinicians and researchers interested in understanding and implementing ACT and mindfulness interventions for people with psychosis.

Examines effects of the environmental distribution of antimicrobial resistance genes on human health and the ecosystem Resistance genes are everywhere in nature—in pathogens, commensals, and environmental microorganisms. This contributed work shows how the environment plays a pivotal role in the development of antimicrobial resistance traits in bacteria and the distribution of resistant microbial species, resistant genetic material, and antibiotic compounds. Readers will discover the impact of the distribution in the environment of antimicrobial resistance genes and antibiotics on both the ecosystem and human and animal health. Antimicrobial Resistance in the Environment is divided into four parts: Part I, Sources, including ecological and clinical consequences of antibiotic resistance by environmental microbes Part II, Fate, including strategies to assess and minimize the biological risk of antibiotic resistance in the environment Part III, Antimicrobial Substances and Resistance, including antibiotics in the aquatic environment Part IV, Effects and Risks, including the effect of antimicrobials used for non-human purposes on human health Recognizing the intricate links among overlapping complex systems, this book examines antimicrobial resistance using a comprehensive ecosystem approach. Moreover, the book's multidisciplinary framework applies principles of microbiology, environmental toxicology, and chemistry to assess the human and ecological risks associated with exposure to antibiotics or antibiotic resistance genes that are environmental contaminants. Each chapter has been written by one or more leading researchers in such fields as microbiology, environmental science, ecology, and toxicology. Comprehensive reference lists at the end of all chapters serve as a gateway to the primary research in the field. Presenting and analyzing the latest findings in a field of growing importance to human and environmental health, this text offers readers new insights into the role of the environment in antimicrobial resistance development, the dissemination of antimicrobial resistant genetic elements, and the transport of antibiotic resistance genes and antibiotics.
