This volume is intended for readers who, whether they be mathematicians, workers in other fields or students, are familiar with the basic approaches and methods of mathematical optimization. The subject matter is concerned with optimization problems in which some or all of the individual data involved depend on one parameter. Such problems are called one-parametric optimization problems. Solution algorithms for such problems are of interest for several reasons. We consider here mainly applications of solution algorithms for one-parametric optimization problems in the following fields: (i) globally convergent algorithms for nonlinear, in particular non-convex, optimization problems, (ii) global optimization, (iii) multi-objective optimization. The main tool for a solution algorithm for a one-parametric optimization problem will be the so-called pathfollowing methods (also called continuation or homotopy methods) (cf. Chapters 3 and 4). Classical methods in the set of stationary points will be extended to the set of all generalized critical points. This could be helpful since the path of stationary points stops in this set, but there is a continuation in the broader set of generalized critical points. However, it will be shown that pathfollowing methods only are not successful in every case. This is the reason why we propose to jump from one connected component in the set of local minimizers and generalized critical points, respectively, to another one (Chapter 5).

This book covers the design and optimization of computer networks applying a rigorous optimization methodology, applicable to any network technology. It is organized into two parts. In Part 1 the reader will learn how to model network problems appearing in computer networks as optimization programs, and use optimization theory to give insights on them. Four problem types are addressed systematically – traffic routing, capacity dimensioning, congestion control and topology design. Part 2 targets the design of algorithms that solve network problems like the ones modeled in Part 1. Two main approaches are addressed – gradient-like algorithms inspiring distributed network protocols that dynamically adapt to the network, or cross-layer schemes that coordinate the cooperation among protocols; and those focusing on the design of heuristic algorithms for long term static network design and planning problems. Following a hands-on approach, the reader will have access to a large set of examples in real-life technologies like IP, wireless and optical networks. Implementations of models and algorithms will be available in the open-source Net2Plan tool from which the user will be able to see how the lessons learned take real form in algorithms, and reuse or execute them to obtain numerical solutions. An accompanying link to the author’s own Net2plan software enables readers to produce numerical solutions to a multitude of real-life problems in computer networks (www.net2plan.com).

Guillaume Sandou Metaheuristic Optimization for the Design of Automatic Control Laws

6019.03 руб.
The classic approach in Automatic Control relies on the use of simplified models of the systems and reformulations of the specifications. In this framework, the control law can be computed using deterministic algorithms. However, this approach fails when the system is too complex for its model to be sufficiently simplified, when the designer has many constraints to take into account, or when the goal is not only to design a control but also to optimize it. This book presents a new trend in Automatic Control with the use of metaheuristic algorithms. These kinds of algorithm can optimize any criterion and constraint, and therefore do not need such simplifications and reformulations. The first chapter outlines the author’s main motivations for the approach which he proposes, and presents the advantages which it offers. In Chapter 2, he deals with the problem of system identification. The third and fourth chapters are the core of the book where the design and optimization of control law, using the metaheuristic method (particle swarm optimization), is given. The proposed approach is presented along with real-life experiments, proving the efficiency of the methodology. Finally, in Chapter 5, the author proposes solving the problem of predictive control of hybrid systems. Contents 1. Introduction and Motivations. 2. Symbolic Regression. 3. PID Design Using Particle Swarm Optimization. 4. Tuning and Optimization of H-infinity Control Laws. 5. Predictive Control of Hybrid Systems. About the Authors Guillaume Sandou is Professor in the Automatic Department of Supélec, in Gif Sur Yvette, France. He has had 12 books, 8 journal papers and 1 patent published, and has written papers for 32 international conferences. His main research interests include modeling, optimization and control of industrial systems; optimization and metaheuristics for Automatic Control; and constrained control.

This book presents a comprehensive treatment of necessary conditions for general optimization problems. The presentation is carried out in the context of a general theory for extremal problems in a topological vector space setting. Following a brief summary of the required background, generalized Lagrange multiplier rules are derived for optimization problems with equality and generalized "inequality" constraints. The treatment stresses the importance of the choice of the underlying set over which the optimization is to be performed, the delicate balance between differentiability-continuity requirements on the constraint functionals, and the manner in which the underlying set is approximated by a convex set. The generalized multiplier rules are used to derive abstract maximum principles for classes of optimization problems defined in terms of operator equations in a Banach space. It is shown that special cases include the usual maximum principles for general optimal control problems described in terms of diverse systems such as ordinary differential equations, functional differential equations, Volterra integral equations, and difference equations. Careful distinction is made throughout the analysis between "local" and "global" maximum principles.Originally published in 1977.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton Universit...

The text is organized into three parts. The first part introduces constraint programming, which provides high level features to declaratively model problems by means of constraints. It describes the main existing approaches for solving constraint satisfaction problems, including complete tree search approaches and metaheuristics, and shows how they can be integrated within constraint programming languages. The second part describes the ant colony optimization metaheuristic and illustrates its capabilities on different constraint satisfaction problems. The third part shows how the ant colony may be integrated within a constraint programming language, thus combining the expressive power of constraint programming languages, to describe problems in a declarative way, and the solving power of ant colony optimization to efficiently solve these problems.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2009 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1.0, University of Duisburg-Essen (Institute of Electrical Power Systems), course: Electrical Engineering, language: English, abstract: The primary objective of this dissertation is to develop a black box optimization tool. The algorithm should be able to solve complex nonlinear, multimodal, discontinuous and mixed-integer power system optimization problems without any model reduction. Although there are many computational intelligence (CI) basedalgorithms which can handle these problems, they require intense human intervention in the form of parameter tuning, selection of a suitable algorithm for a given problem etc. The idea here is to develop an algorithm that works relatively well on a variety of problems with minimum human effort. The most significant optimization task in the power system operation is the scheduling of various generation resources (Unit Commitment, UC). The current practice used in UC modelling is the binary approach. This modelling results in a high dimension problem. This in turn leads to increased computational effort anddecreased efficiency of the algorithm. A duty cycle based modelling proposed in this thesis results in 80 percent reduction in the problem dimension. The stern uptime and downtime requirements are also included in the modelling. Therefore, the search process mostly starts in a feasible solution space. From the investigations on a benchmark problem...

With respect to the importance of multi-objective optimization in the context of the today's information processing and analysis, as well as the limitation of current approaches to treat large and complex tasks in practical time and little adjustment costs, this work proposes a novel optimization concept, based on data domain transformations and subsequent cluster analyses to solve multi-objective optimization problems. The approach abstracts the transposition of large, high-dimensional and diverse data models to low-dimensional uniform equivalents within an independent framework, which is optimized regarding data similarity conservation, i.e. the semantic relations of the data items to each other are preserved, and low runtime complexity, i.e. linearly increasing model sizes also cause only linearly growing runtimes in spite of the consideration of all data relations. The cluster analysis step is represented by an enhanced version of the k-Means algorithm, which is designed to group large numbers of data items to large numbers of clusters with also linear time complexity. Applying and adapting these both components to generic segmentation and pattern recognition tasks as two representative multi-objective optimization problems, illustrate and prove the usability of the proposed concept, by solving these tasks with high qualities of results and low runtimes with virtually linear time complexities. The abstracted components, as well as their application extensions are tes...

With the rapid scientific and technological advances in the modern age, new challenging optimization problems are encountered in various fields and disciplines, requiring novel approaches to search for their solutions. Meta-heuristics and stochastic search methods like evolutionary algorithms are a promising approach which have been successfully applied to many real-world problems. Probabilistic modeling is an important tool for dealing with the uncertainty in the problems and several methods have been proposed for automatic learning and inference of probabilistic models. Estimation of distribution algorithms (EDAs) are a class of evolutionary algorithms which utilize probabilistic modeling to enhance the search for solutions of complex optimization problems. In this book, we discuss the use of a well-known statistical technique called regularization for model learning in EDAs and study how it influences the performance of these algorithms in optimization. The discussions are extended to multi-objective optimization where joint variable-objective probabilistic modeling is introduced and analyzed. Our study also covers noisy domains, employing methods based on interval analysis.

Introduces a revolutionary, quadratic-programming based approach to solving long-standing problems in motion planning and control of redundant manipulators This book describes a novel quadratic programming approach to solving redundancy resolutions problems with redundant manipulators. Known as ``QP-unified motion planning and control of redundant manipulators'' theory, it systematically solves difficult optimization problems of inequality-constrained motion planning and control of redundant manipulators that have plagued robotics engineers and systems designers for more than a quarter century. An example of redundancy resolution could involve a robotic limb with six joints, or degrees of freedom (DOFs), with which to position an object. As only five numbers are required to specify the position and orientation of the object, the robot can move with one remaining DOF through practically infinite poses while performing a specified task. In this case redundancy resolution refers to the process of choosing an optimal pose from among that infinite set. A critical issue in robotic systems control, the redundancy resolution problem has been widely studied for decades, and numerous solutions have been proposed. This book investigates various approaches to motion planning and control of redundant robot manipulators and describes the most successful strategy thus far developed for resolving redundancy resolution problems. Provides a fully connected, systematic, methodological, consecutive, and easy approach to solving redundancy resolution problems Describes a new approach to the time-varying Jacobian matrix pseudoinversion, applied to the redundant-manipulator kinematic control Introduces The QP-based unification of robots' redundancy resolution Illustrates the effectiveness of the methods presented using a large number of computer simulation results based on PUMA560, PA10, and planar robot manipulators Provides technical details for all schemes and solvers presented, for readers to adopt and customize them for specific industrial applications Robot Manipulator Redundancy Resolution is must-reading for advanced undergraduates and graduate students of robotics, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, tracking control, neural dynamics/neural networks, numerical algorithms, computation and optimization, simulation and modelling, analog, and digital circuits. The majority of them imitate the behavior of natural phenomena to find the best solution. The algorithms find promising regions in an affordable time because of exploration and exploitation ability. Although the mentioned algorithms have satisfactory results in various fields, none of them is able to present a higher performance for all applications. Therefore, searching for a new meta-heuristic algorithm is an open problem. In this study, an improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) scheme combined with Newton’s laws of motion, the centripetal accelerated particle swarm optimization (CAPSO), is introduced. Stochastic programs form a class of optimization problems that have seen much attention in the last decade. As has the class of equilibrium problems which have resulted largely from the analytic treatment of Nash games. This thesis delves into some challenging areas of stochastic optimization and stochastic equilibrium programming. Our interest is in understanding properties of these problems and in developing algorithms for solving such problems. We first consider a two-period stochastic nonlinear program. In this context, we obtain new insights into the notions of feasibility and recourse for such programs and develop an algorithm based on sequential quadratic programming. The algorithm uses two quadratic programming solvers based on Benders decomposition: an inexact cut version of the L-shaped method and a trust-region method. We next consider stochastic equilibrium problems arising from Nash-Cournot competition, inspired by a Cournot bidding model for electricity markets. We first show existence and uniqueness of Nash equilibria to a wide class of stochastic quadratic games and then develop a splitting method that can be decomposed scenario-wise to compute such equilibria.

The structure of approximate solutions of autonomous discrete-time optimal control problems and individual turnpike results for optimal control problems without convexity (concavity) assumptions are examined in this book. In particular, the book focuses on the properties of approximate solutions which are independent of the length of the interval, for all sufficiently large intervals; these results apply to the so-called turnpike property of the optimal control problems. By encompassing the so-called turnpike property the approximate solutions of the problems are determined primarily by the objective function and are fundamentally independent of the choice of interval and endpoint conditions, except in regions close to the endpoints. This book also explores the turnpike phenomenon for two large classes of autonomous optimal control problems. It is illustrated that the turnpike phenomenon is stable for an optimal control problem if the corresponding infinite horizon optimal control problem possesses an asymptotic turnpike property. If an optimal control problem belonging to the first class possesses the turnpike property, then the turnpike is a singleton (unit set). The stability of the turnpike property under small perturbations of an objective function and of a constraint map is established. For the second class of problems where the turnpike phenomenon is not necessarily a singleton the stability of the turnpike property under small perturbations of an objective function is...

The author of this book presents a general, robust, and easy-to-use method that can handle many design parameters efficiently. Following an introduction, Chapter 1 presents the general concepts of truss layout optimization, starting from topology optimization where structural component sizes and system connectivity are simultaneously optimized. To fully realize the potential of truss layout optimization for the design of lightweight structures, the consideration of geometrical variables is then introduced. Chapter 2 addresses truss geometry and topology optimization by combining mathematical programming and structural mechanics: the structural properties of the optimal solution are used for devising the novel formulation. To avoid singularities arising in optimal configurations, this approach disaggregates the equilibrium equations and fully integrates their basic elements within the optimization formulation. The resulting tool incorporates elastic and plastic design, stress and displacement constraints, as well as self-weight and multiple loading. The inherent slenderness of lightweight structures requires the study of stability issues. As a remedy, Chapter 3 proposes a conceptually simple but efficient method to include local and nodal stability constraints in the formulation. Several numerical examples illustrate the impact of stability considerations on the optimal design. Finally, the investigation on realistic design problems in Chapter 4 confirms the practical applicability of the proposed method. It is shown how we can generate a range of optimal designs by varying design settings.

A detailed review of a wide range of meta-heuristic and evolutionary algorithms in a systematic manner and how they relate to engineering optimization problems This book introduces the main metaheuristic algorithms and their applications in optimization. It describes 20 leading meta-heuristic and evolutionary algorithms and presents discussions and assessments of their performance in solving optimization problems from several fields of engineering. The book features clear and concise principles and presents detailed descriptions of leading methods such as the pattern search (PS) algorithm, the genetic algorithm (GA), the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm, the Tabu search (TS) algorithm, the ant colony optimization (ACO), and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique. Chapter 1 of Meta-heuristic and Evolutionary Algorithms for Engineering Optimization provides an overview of optimization and defines it by presenting examples of optimization problems in different engineering domains. Chapter 2 presents an introduction to meta-heuristic and evolutionary algorithms and links them to engineering problems. Chapters 3 to 22 are each devoted to a separate algorithm— and they each start with a brief literature review of the development of the algorithm, and its applications to engineering problems. The principles, steps, and execution of the algorithms are described in detail, and a pseudo code of the algorithm is presented, which serves as a guideline for coding the algorithm to solve specific applications. This book: Introduces state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms and their applications to engineering optimization; Fills a gap in the current literature by compiling and explaining the various meta-heuristic and evolutionary algorithms in a clear and systematic manner; Provides a step-by-step presentation of each algorithm and guidelines for practical implementation and coding of algorithms; Discusses and assesses the performance of metaheuristic algorithms in multiple problems from many fields of engineering; Relates optimization algorithms to engineering problems employing a unifying approach. Meta-heuristic and Evolutionary Algorithms for Engineering Optimization is a reference intended for students, engineers, researchers, and instructors in the fields of industrial engineering, operations research, optimization/mathematics, engineering optimization, and computer science.
