This book presents a silicon micromechanical resonator based digital temperature sensing technique as well as an efficient local-thermal-isolation method. The micromechanical resonator based thermometry results into a lag-free temperature sensor suitable for high precision temperature control of the resonator. The thermal isolation technique includes the design of an integrated heater with the micromechanical resonator such that the mechanical suspension, electrical heating and thermal isolation are provided in a single compact structure. This results in reducing the power consumption by more than 20x and the thermal time constant by more than 50x. Further reduction in power consumption requires analysis of the resonator structure to maintain its mechanical integrity. An improved thermally isolated design using topology optimization is described. The final design provides both the thermal isolation as well as the mechanical isolation with the overall reduction in power consumption of 40x. Furthermore, these methods are simple enough to implement it into any existing MEMS fabrication process.

New challenges are constantly faced in the development of RF and microwave filters, which have not only sustained but fuelled microwave filter research over the many years. These developments have encouraged new solutions for the realization of compact, low loss, highly selective RF and microwave filters. This text presents a novel distributed dual-mode resonator configuration which allows the realisation of tunable, highly compact microwave bandpass filters. Many interesting and attractive characteristics of the resonator are explored in detail. Application of this resonator in bandpass filter design is discussed with examples illustrating the design process with theoretical and experimental results to showcase filter performance. All-pole, generalised Chebyshev and dual-bandpass filters are shown to be easily developed with the novel resonator while achieveing a highly miniature footprint and a wide stopband. Finally, by employing a novel non-linear distortion enhancement technique readily applicable to this resonator, the design of highly linear tunable filter is discussed.

Dielectric resonator antennas have great potential to become one of the most important components in the next generation of high performance communication systems. The Specific absorption rate (SAR) is used to quantify the power absorbed in the bio-tissues per unit mass expressed in W/kg. SAR measurements are performed using a tissue-equivalent medium, whose dielectric properties simulate the average properties of human body or head tissues. SAR sensitivity coefficients depend on many parameters such as frequency, permittivity and conductivity of medium, distance between antenna and medium, near field versus far field, polarization of antenna etc. The present work is motivated by the need to know the SAR distributions/amount of power absorption in a bio-layer due to dielectric resonator antennas/antenna arrays, which are frequently used in wireless portable devices.

The combination of an optical access network and the radio propagation of high data-rate signals provides a solution to meet these demands. Such structures are also known as Radio Over Fibre systems. They implement the optical Millimetre Wave generation in a central station and the transmission of radio waves via a remote antenna unit to the radio cell. The expected data rate is very high, due to the fact that both the optical and the radio-link provide a large transmission bandwidth. This dissertation concerns the investigation of a new and simple method for the flexible generation of Millimetre Waves for application in Radio Over Fibre systems. The method is based on the heterodyne detection of two optical waves in a photo detector. By externally amplitude modulating the optical wave, different sidebands are generated. In contrast to most other vertebrates,teleost fish exhibit an unparalleled capacity to generate stem cells in both the intact and the injured adult brain.My research is focused on the occurrence, the extent and the fate of aneuploid cells (genome-modified individual cells characterized by the loss or gain of whole chromosomes) generated in the teleostean brain. Aneuploidy arises through various chromosome segregation defects during the mitotic divisions of newly-generated cells in the adult brain. Aneuploidy is observed in ~80% of the newly-generated stem cells of the adult brain,but occurs at a very low rate in liver tissue, as shown by metaphase chromosome spreads and flow-cytometric DNA content analysis. The mitotic machinery of adult brain cells was examined for chromosome segregation defects which showed lagging chromosomes at metaphase and anaphase, as well as micronuclei and anaphase bridges,in the intact adult brain. In conclusion,my research demonstrates the evidence of the generation and maintenance of aneuploid cells in the adult fish brain that arise through chromosome missegregation which is a widespread phenomenon in the teleostean central nervous system.

This book focuses on fabrication of ZnO/CdS optical sensor. Nanocrystalline ZnO/CdS core-shell optical sensors were fabricated by chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. Vertically aligned ZnO nanorods were firstly synthesized on silicon p-type (111) by CBD method with assist of microwave. The CdS were deposited on the ZnO nanorods to create core-shell structure by using CBD method with cadmium chloride (CdCl2) 0.15M as Cd2+ ion source at difference deposition time. ZnO nanorods were the core and CdS were the shell of this core-shell structure. The photoconductive testing was carried out to test this optical sensor light detection by shining ultraviolet (UV) light pulse on the devices. The devices affect the light absorption and have higher sensitivity to the light. The highest sensitivity reached 53% for the ZnO/CdS optical sensor while the ZnO optical sensor only 6.77% and ZnO/CdS can response to high frequency light pulse. The energy band gap of ZnO/CdS was also lowered to 3.3eV compared to ZnO, 3.38eV. These results demonstrate the existence of CdS has enhanced the ability and the properties of optical sensor compared to ZnO nanorods optical sensor alone.

In this monograph, we study graph-index, Watatani's extended Jones index, and the relations between them. From this investigation, we realize that graph-index of graphs and Jones index of von Neumann algebras generated by "graph groupoids" are equivalent in a certain sense, whenver given graphs are finite trees. We provides the classification of graph-groupoid von Neumann algebras induced by finite trees with respect to these equivalent indexes. By understanding the indexings as morphisms, we establish actions of morphisms and construct the corresponding algebraic structure, called the "index semigroup." We study the fundamental properties of them. As application, we consider the connection between our index semigroup and K-groups of finite-tree-groupoid von Neumann algebras.

In future-optical networks channels will be routed through complex, meshed networks (ASTN, Automatically Switched Transport Networks, ITU-T Recommendation G.808 0/Y.1304). These networks will be able to setup transparent optical paths without converting the optical signals to electrical signals. In all-optical networks the physical impairments and degradation effects play an important role. There is a multitude of degradation effects like dispersion, noise, crosstalk, fiber nonlinearities, polarization dependent loss, etc. To enable a fast setup and the best choice of one of the available paths, the signal quality along the whole transmission distance has to be evaluated very fast. Ideally, only a single figure of merit (FOM), e.g. the bit error rate (BER), will be computed, which incorporates all degradation effects. Therefore it is important to characterize the different physical impairments analytically. Signal distortions can be measured by an eye opening penalty (EOP) and degradation effects due to noise by the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). Unlike conventional optics, scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) overcomesthe Rayleigh criterion and can therefore achieve better resolutions than conventionaloptical microscopes. This feature is utilized to measure the optical propertiesof different silver particle distributions on a glass surface. This paper mainlylays focus on intensity correction of the optical data due to topographical artifacts,analysis of plasmonic behavior and a tentative representation of the optical data.The simple approach for optical artifact correction has been shown to yield qualitativesuccess, with necessity of improvement for quantitative results. Given theconditions of the experiment, it has also been observed that plasmonic couplingseems to have a greater impact on the small observed particles. The tentative representationof the optics suggests that the larger particles are able to emit light byabsorption of electromagnetic energy from their surrounding.

In this study, individual consumption as a function of income generated by a cow under one-cow-one family program is modelled. The model was applied on sample data collected from Nyaruguru District in Rwanda. The poverty level in the district was estimated and its variance determined. The confidence intervals of the poverty levels were also computed and compared with already established results. It was established that the model is effective.
