Nicolas Rohde Disliked Practices

In recent years, the concept of organizational practices has become increasingly popular in organization studies. The focus of research that follows a "practice approach" is on the actual activities in organizations as opposed to prescribed procedures or standardized routines. This book is about a hitherto neglected category of practice, namely, disliked practices in organizations. On the basis of an empirical study in three German companies, the author reveals how continuous practicing of disliked practices results in a discrepancy between practitioners and their practices. This stands in contrast to previous literature, which understands practices as being exclusively positive and in which the consent of the practitioner to their practices is generally assumed.Based on the findings from the inductive study, the author develops a Theory of Disliked Practices, which explicates findings about the nature and the evolvement of disliked practices, and the negative effects of disliked practices on practitioners and organizational functioning. This book addresses researchers, lecturers, students and all those interested in organization studies and related disciplines, such as industrial-organizational psychology and sociology. The results of the study have significant implications for practice theory and methodology. Moreover, the theoretical model presented in this book provides a valuable basis for further research. Beyond that, the book will be insightful for managers and ...

Dr. Ursula Bell Healthcare Leadership Practices. How to Conquer Nursing Shortages by Improving Engagement and Retention

Healthcare Leadership Practices: How to Conquer Nursing Shortages by Improving Engagement and Retention, explores the root causes of the enduring nursing shortages, its effects in the current healthcare environment, and strategies to conquer the shortages. Appropriate nurse staffing levels are critical to providing optimal quality of care, proactively and effectively mitigate clinical risks, and maintain safe environments of care for patients. Why is the nursing shortage taking such a long time to resolve? What role can healthcare organizations play to stop the bleeding, engage nurses, and increase retention in the nursing workforce? In this book, Dr. Bell leverages results of an outstanding study at a 493 bed Magnet-designated acute care hospital to shed perspectives from clinical professionals on plausible strategies to curb the nursing shortage. The establishment, sustainability and standardization of processes and strategies that support nurses’ work environments rest upon the shoulders of healthcare leaders. She confirms that fixing the nursing shortage is not easy but we can begin resolving the problem by understanding what nurses say will motivate them, curb attrition, and increase engagement and retention rates. Organizational culture, leadership practices and shared values are significant in the engagement and retention of nurses. Clinical leadership styles need to evolve to incorporate leadership practices that are desirable for nursing work environments.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2014 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: Exploration for natural resources and their utilization are present ever since the existence of human civilization. In India, land and water resources are the two important ones which determine our development. We possess large geographical area of 329 M.ha and unfortunately, nearly half of it is characterized with low soil fertility. Thus, nutrient limitation is an issue of concern in these marginal lands and several initiatives have been made in the past on their improvement. In contrast, we are also seeing nutrient surplus situations, sometimes even toxicities, in urban areas due to domestic and industrial waste disposals. Chemically, these wastes are organic in nature and rich in plant nutrients. An attempt was made to match these contrasting situations i.e. application of nutrient rich organic wastes to meet the nutrient requirements of tree species planted on less fertile wastelands. Thus, the objectives of the experiment were, - To characterize the wastelands in terms of physical and chemical features as soil limiting factors in afforestation programme- To characterize domestic and agro-industrial organic wastes for suitability as nutrient source in afforestation programme- To evaluate the changes in physical and chemical properties of wasteland soils due to organic wastes application- To evaluate the growth performance of tree species due t...

This is a first of its kind empirical study addressing the unmarked topic of risk management practices (RMPs) of IFIs and CFIs in Pakistan. The study aimed at expanding the existing literature by providing novel empirical evidence. Literature review classified risks faced by both IFIs and CFIs under six categories. The research concludes that credit risk, equity investment risk, market risk, liquidity risk, rate of return risk and operational risk management practices in IFIs are not different from the practices in CFIs and the overall risk management practices of IFIs and CFIs are alike in Pakistan. The study also concludes that a research based in one country cannot be generalized to another country therefore every country must conduct research in its own context. This opens our eyes to the fact that much is unknown about the risk management practices in Pakistani financial system, creating a need for empirical studies for further discoveries to formulate better frameworks and to prevent an impending financial crisis that might be unraveling as you read this book. Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 1.0, Edinburgh Napier University (Business School), language: English, abstract: This study seeks to understand knowledge transfer practices within the Muslim business community in Edinburgh. It investigates how knowledge transfer practices are managed on a day to day basis, examines the route of development and justification for these practices into meaningful knowledge transfer processes, and explores the underlying perspective of knowledge from the knowledge transfer practitioners view of knowledge transfer practices in a business context. In particular, the study seeks explanations for such practices with reference to both a knowledge-based and a resource-based view of the firm. Due to the multifarious phenomena of knowledge transfer, and to allow a scope necessary to establish epistemological and empirical evidence from literature, a two stage literature review process was adopted. The majority of literature expounds an argument in which knowledge and knowledge transfer processes in a business context are embedded within a set of real world dimensions, based on causal relationships. Literature determines that it is overcoming difficulties with this framework which is critical for a businesses ability to manage, utilise and extract value from multiple internal and external sources of knowledge. Four broad themes were identified, from which most l...

Doron Ezri Loss of Lock and Steady-State Errors In a non Causal Phase Estimator

The phenomenon of loss of lock in tracking systems is ubiquitous in engineering practice. However, the key problem of loss of lock in non-causal estimation or smoothing is a marked exception in this well researched area. The methods that were developed for the treatment of the former are not suitable for the analysis of the latter problem. The main purpose of this research is to provide the missing theory and investigate the phenomenon of loss of lock in smoothers. We concentrate in this dissertation on the carrier phase estimation problem, a benchmark problem in nonlinear estimation. Our results include an asymptotic computation of the mean time to lose lock (MTLL) in the optimal minimum noise energy (MNE) smoother. We show that the MTLL in the first and second order smoother is significantly longer than that in the causal phase locked loop(PLL). We give a complete description of the steady state error regime in linear and nonlinear smoothers, in case the inputs are polynomial in time. We show that the steady-state error in the optimal smoother is significantly smaller than that in the optimal filter.

Ayhan IRCI On Optimal Resource Allocation in Phased Array Radar Systems

In this study, the problem of optimal resource allocation in real-time systems is studied. A recently proposed resource allocation approach called Q-RAM (Quality of Service based Resource Allocation Model) is investigated in detail. The goal of the Q-RAM based approaches is to minimize the execution speed in real-time systems while meeting resource constraints and maximizing total utility. Phased array radar system is an example of a system. In this system, multiple targets are tracked by the radar system simultaneously requiring processor and energy resources of the radar system. In the present study, first, the Q-RAM solution approach to the radar resource allocation problem with single resource type is extended to give a global optimal solution in all possible termination cases. For the case of multiple resource types, the Q-RAM approach can only generate near-optimal results. In this study, for the formulated radar resource allocation problem with multiple resource types, the Methods of Feasible Directions are considered as an alternative solution approach.

Dipendra Gautam Water Management through Indigenous Knowledge. A Case of Historic Settlement of Bhaktapur City, Nepal

Techno-Anthropological approach has been formulated in researching a traditional settlement of Bhaktapur City, Nepal. The practices of indigenous people have been analyzed by juxtaposing the science along with the indigenous technology. It has been significantly concluded that, the impetus behind the city sustainability is primarily the indigenous knowledge and sometimes this knowledge is overwhelming to even the modern scientific aspects too. Indigenous technology of water management in the historic city of Bhaktapur has been also found to be significant not only in terms of supply rather in terms of quality of water too. The reusability of water resources has given an excellent paradigm even to the modern approaches too. The lifestyle in terms of culture and religion has been associated with water for this city, and water management is also facilitated through cultural practices and religious establishments. A city regarded as 'City of Devotees' has disseminated a remarkable approach for the water management by keeping aside the modern scientific approaches. The city was established in the 13th century and practices are continuously adopted since then as indigenous practices through unrelenting trial and error, the indigenous technology of water management has been found to be rational hence revitalization of some components might be more energy efficient and economic for present day water scarcity solution in the city

Kingsley Mua Kelly Roadmap of African Countries in Tackling Corruption Practices

This book is drawn from my PhD dissertation in forensic accounting. The dissertation deals with fraud and corruption in Cameroon and Nigeria. Fraud and corruption have eaten deep into the fabric of most economies with grievous effects that have limited the growth and infrastructural development of many nations and led many firms to the road of bankruptcy. Fraud is rarely seen but the symptoms of fraud are usually observed. The book is based on a comparative study aiming to determine the level of fraud and corrupt practices in Nigeria and Cameroon, and how to curb this menace. Since this study intends to compare fraud and corruption (FAC) practices in the public sector in these two countries, the broken trust theory was preferred because it provides a framework to uncover the determinants of possible motivations behind FAC practices in the public sector of an economy. To achieve this, an empirical study was conducted in Nigeria and Cameroon. The findings of this study research apply to the majority of African countries, and the book provides a roadmap for an effective and efficient way of fighting fraud and corruption in the African continent.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Industrial Management, grade: 1,3, LMU Munich (Information, Organisation und Management / und CDTM), language: English, abstract: "The most significant factor in America, leading to high production at low cost, is efficient management." This quotation is not from a longitudinal, empirical study, but it is stated by the British Productivity Council in the context of the Marshal Plan - the Anglo - American productivity mission in 1951. Hence, one question might be: Is there indeed a strong link between management practices and firm performance? A further question might be: How American management practices rank compared with European or Asian management practices? And what role plays organizational structure on firm performance? Are there interacted effects between management practices and organizational structure? Insights into the impact of management practices and organizational structure on firm performance are mainly based on theories.Consequently, there is a strong need to measure management practices and organizational structure across countries and cultures to verify theoretical hypotheses with empirical data. This paper sheds some empirical light on these topics as well as on the distribution of management practices and organizational structures across countries and industries. This book is based on a unique data set with more than 3500 management interviews to document and analyze the influen...

Bernard Cudjoe Adomey Succession Practices in the Contemporary African Pentecostal Churches. A Case Study

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, , course: Biblical Studies, language: English, abstract: This project work, "Succession Practices in the Contemporary African Pentecostal churches: A Case Study of the Bethel Prayer Ministry International, Headquarter Branch Ghana", sought to study how succession is done. Through the effort of Bethel Prayer Ministry International, Christianity in Africa, especially Ghana, has been recognized by some scholars like Kingsley Larbi from the perspective of Pentecostalism. Within the first ten years of its establishment, the church has opened branches in fifteen countries worldwide, including Ghana. And it has influenced the style of praying in the Pentecostal arena in the country. However, one could hardly get the comprehensive history of the church after the sudden death of the founder, Bishop Dr. Paul Owusu Tabiri. There is a lot of literature on leadership succession practices and planning, as well as relevant theoretical reviews. Primary data collection on the field, extensive questionnaires and observations were done. The descriptive, narrative, analytical and interpretative methods were applied in describing, analyzing, and interpreting the data collected. The research findings outlined the loopholes in their succession practices and planning. The study also established the fact that there were challenges but they were able to sustain the church. Recommendations were given basically to en...

Kyaw Lin Process Optimisation of Injection Moulding using Computer Simulation

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, University of South Australia, language: English, abstract: Determining optimal values of process control factors is critical in injection moulding process because of their influences on product quality, productivity and cost of production. In the past, many researchers exploited traditional and artificial methods but the limitations of different methods prevented to achieve optimal level of process design variables for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) injection moulding process. To bridge the gap, this study aims to develop a computer integrated optimisation system (CIOS). In this research, virtual reality (VR) technology is employed, in the first phase, for simulation purpose and combination of design of experiments (DOE) and SAPSO-based ANN method is used for optimising the simulation results in order to achieve global optimal solution for the control parameters. Apparently, the proposed approach is a new integration system that can help the users determine optimal parameter settings to accomplish the MIMO injection moulding process with competitive benefits of cost and production efficiency.

In this paper we show that for the D-optimal design, departures from the design are much less important than a departure from the model. As a consequence, we propose, based on D-optimality, a rule for choosing the regression degree. We also study different types of departures from the model to define a new class of D-optimal designs, which is robust and more efficient than the uniform one.

Francisco J. Pulido Arrebola New Techniques and Algorithms for Multiobjective and Lexicographic Goal-Based Shortest Path Problems

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2015 in the subject Computer Science - Miscellaneous, University of Málaga (University of Málaga), language: English, abstract: Shortest Path Problems (SPP) are one of the most extensively studied problems in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Operations Research (OR). It consists in finding the shortest path between two given nodes in a graph such that the sum of the weights of its constituent arcs is minimized. However, real life problems frequently involve the consideration of multiple, and often conflicting, criteria. When multiple objectives must be simultaneously optimized, the concept of a single optimal solution is no longer valid. Instead, a set of efficient or Pareto-optimal solutions define the optimal trade-off between the objectives under consideration. The Multicriteria Search Problem (MSP), or Multiobjective Shortest Path Problem, is the natural extension to the SPP when more than one criterion are considered. The MSP is computationally harder than the single objective one. The number of label expansions can grow exponentially with solution depth, even for the two objective case. However, with the assumption of bounded integer costs and a fixed number of objectives the problem becomes tractable for polynomially sized graphs.Goal programming is one of the most successful Multicriteria Decision Making (MCDM) techniques used in Multicriteria Optimization. In this thesis we explore one of its variants in the M...

The Search for Best Practices will help you do the right thing and in the right way in spite of organizational roadblocks. It gives a real "how to" look to assist management and operations personnel to analyze their operations in a program of continuous improvements and on-going search for best practices so that each entity operates most economically, efficiently, and effectively-tied into why the entity is in existence in the first place. Best practice techniques assist the company in identifying its critical problem areas and treating the cause and not the symptom. With sensible business principles as the hallmark for the company's quest for best practices, the company can be clear as to the direction of movement and avoid merely improving poor practices or matching competitors' less than desirable practices-that is, being less inefficient than competitors. Clear business principles that make sense to all levels of the organization allow the company to identify and develop the proper best practices. In this manner, everyone in the organization is moving in the same desired direction-and singing from the same songbook. The viruses that corrupt a business organization can be widespread and quite contagious. Nouveau quick fixes may be okay in the short term, but over the long haul, the company needs to know what they are doing. If the company doesn't, some other company will.

The author of this book presents a general, robust, and easy-to-use method that can handle many design parameters efficiently. Following an introduction, Chapter 1 presents the general concepts of truss layout optimization, starting from topology optimization where structural component sizes and system connectivity are simultaneously optimized. To fully realize the potential of truss layout optimization for the design of lightweight structures, the consideration of geometrical variables is then introduced. Chapter 2 addresses truss geometry and topology optimization by combining mathematical programming and structural mechanics: the structural properties of the optimal solution are used for devising the novel formulation. To avoid singularities arising in optimal configurations, this approach disaggregates the equilibrium equations and fully integrates their basic elements within the optimization formulation. The resulting tool incorporates elastic and plastic design, stress and displacement constraints, as well as self-weight and multiple loading. The inherent slenderness of lightweight structures requires the study of stability issues. As a remedy, Chapter 3 proposes a conceptually simple but efficient method to include local and nodal stability constraints in the formulation. Several numerical examples illustrate the impact of stability considerations on the optimal design. Finally, the investigation on realistic design problems in Chapter 4 confirms the practical applicability of the proposed method. It is shown how we can generate a range of optimal designs by varying design settings.

M. Fawzi Mahomoodally, Stephanie Krige Socio-demographic Factors in Selected Eating Practices

Eating practices (EP) are important factors to consider in public health nutrition as people eat every day and throughout the day. Therefore, observing EP may give an idea of the nutritional status of individuals in the population. Indeed, certain EP may predict future health problems, such as high fast food consumption and obesity in certain developed countries. Other practices may be a form of prophylactic for certain diseases such as postulated in the French paradox. To this effect, studying EP within a population is complex due to the multiplicity of different factors which are involved in the process of choosing, acquiring, preparing and consuming food. While the number of non-communicable diseases is on the rise in many countries, there is an ever-growing need to gain information on the underlying nutritional causes to these diseases. In view of the fact that there is a dearth of literature pertaining to socio-demographic factors and EP in developing countries, this book therefore lay much emphasis on recent findings on this issue and explores the different eating practices in a multicultural and developing country like Mauritius.

Pertti J. Anttonen Tradition through Modernity

In their study of social practices deemed traditional, scholars tend to use the concept and idea of tradition as an element of meaning in the practices under investigation. But just whose meaning is it? Is it a meaning generated by those who study tradition or those whose traditions are being studied? In both cases, particular criteria for traditionality are employed, whether these are explicated or not. Individuals and groups will no doubt continue to uphold their traditional practices or refer to their practices as traditional. While they are in no way obliged to explicate in analytical terms their criteria for traditionality, the same cannot be said for those who make the study of traditions their profession. In scholarly analysis, traditions need to be explained instead of used as explanations for apparent repetitions and replications or symbolic linking in social practice, values, history, and heritage politics. This book takes a closer look at 'tradition' and 'folklore' in order to conceptualize them within discourses on modernity and modernism. The first section discusses 'modern' and 'traditional' as modern concepts and the study of folklore as a modern trajectory. The underlying tenet here is that non-modernity cannot be represented without modern mediation, which therefore makes the representations of non-modernity epistemologically modern. The second section focuses on the nation-state of Finland and the nationalistic use of folk tra...

The majority of the research that gets published, perhaps 70% of it, hardly has any measurable scholarly impact in terms of citations. Rather than low relevancy, 'Bad to Good' posits that the deeper issue is the pervasive use of bad research practices appearing in most articles in almost all ranked journals in the sub-disciplines of business. With the objective of reducing the high volume of bad practices in research in finance, management and marketing, the book offers tools for improving theory construction and empirical testing of theory especially by early-to-mid scholars.
