Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 1,0, University of Duisburg-Essen (Wirtschaftswissenschaften), language: English, abstract: For many organizations the alignment between social media and organizational culture is a massive challenge because these two concepts do not match in general. The integration of social media in organizations demands preliminary change-oriented cultures which, however, often have inflexible structures that prevent changes. In this thesis, there will be an investigation on the effect of social media integration on the organizational culture by use of literature review, with a special focus on the internal communication within organizations. This thesis first defines the term of social media which are very up-to-date but which are used in many cases so that a differentiated point of view has to be taken. In almost the same manner, the term organizational culture is described. This concept, however, is underestimated because the majority of people do not think of an organizational culture when looking at an organization, but they are rather profit-oriented. Thus, it is crucial to consider this social aspect of an organization. The thesis investigates this concept critically. One of the concerned elements in consequence of the combination between social media and organizational culture is the communication within an organization. An integration of social media tec...

This paradigm is a sieve that only lets through the culturally acceptable strategies in an organization. This book analyzes the impact of culture on employee justice judgments and reactions toperceptions of fairness and unfairness. I start this book with the following two questions. Why is a book on culture and organizational justice needed? What does such a book add tothe extant literature on organizational justice, especially, after the publication of the landmarkwork of Colquitt and Greenberg (2005), Handbook of Organizational Justice?Although there are no easy answers to these questions, in the following lines, I explain thereasons why a book on culture and justice is not only needed but also timely. There are at least three reasons for which a book on culture and organizational justice is needed. First, a book on culture andorganizational justice is needed because "there are indications that culture exerts very important and wide-ranging effects onjustice behavior including even generally shaping the likelihood that individuals will experience feelings of injustice" (James,1993, p. 22). Second, globalization has led to the interrelatedness of world economies. Thus, most organizations not only operatein several countries, but they also employ people from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. The resulting challengeis to find new ways of managing a culturally diverse workforce. Third, justice is inherent to any organized social group. As examples of social systems, organizations are arenas of justice concerns because their members compete for limitedresources...

There are numerous ethnic groups in southern Ethiopia of which most also speak their own language and have distinct cultural trades. But how would the future of the different ethnic groups and their cultural heritage look like in the face of globalization processes? Is this cultural and linguistic diversity now diminishing through globalization processes and becoming replaced by a homogenous "global culture"?This study examines whether the cultures of southern Ethiopia are being penetrated by American popular culture, local cultural products are threatened with extinction and whether traditional lifestyles are becoming abandoned because the people of south Ethiopia are increasingly becoming part of a "global consumer culture". What about "modernization" efforts by development projects and the global spread of formal education through schooling, do they contribute to the elimination of indigenous knowledge systems? And does the spread of the English language already constitute a threat to linguistic diversity? Moreover, the impacts of the arrivals of international tourists and of Christian missionary organizations on the cultures of the different ethnic groups are being examined.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 2,0, University of Tubingen (International Business), language: English, abstract: This thesis explores the significance of organizational justice in international joint ventures (IJV), from an organizational as well as a cultural perspective. The majority of studies on organizational justice were conducted within organizations and in a mono-cultural context. However, in the face of increasing globalization and growing popularity of IJV activities, the study of fairness in a cross-cultural context becomes more and more important. Therefore, this thesis seeks to bring organizational justice into relation with culture by using an IJV context, and serve as a starting point for further research in this area. The three dimensions of justice, distributive, procedural, and interactional justice, positively affect IJV performance through their distinct and interactive effects. In this setting, culture has a moderating influence on justice perceptions, which can be assessed though bringing justice perspectives together with Hofstede's cultural dimensions. Effects on fairness perceptions in different cultures can be outlined and contrasted. On this basis, implications for theoretical discussion and managerial practice in cross-cultural joint ventures can be derived. Together with further research, managers could use these findings to develop transcultural justice competencies. To decide which of ...

The main objectives of this book are to empirically analyze the impact of leader's change-promoting behavior on employee's readiness for change and whether this relationship is mediated by organizational culture in the context of a developing country such as Pakistan. A sample of 205 responses is drawn from managers based in Karachi. With the help of advanced multivariate statistical techniques, the results indicate that leader's change-promoting behavior has a significant positive impact on change readiness and this relationship is partially mediated by organizational culture in Karachi. The findings may be generalized on a larger population in Pakistan. The study supports the theory of one of the six conceptual formations of change readiness which refers it to as an employee's capacity to change. Therefore, managers should clearly advocate the desired change with the help of their own change-prompting behavior as well as establishing a trusting culture in their organization. Both limitations and areas for future research in the context of Pakistan are also discussed.

In the conclusion it was argued that is it necessary to modify the wholistic theology of the EECMY further in the direction of, integral human liberation. The principal reason for the vicious circle of poverty and failure of modernization in Ethiopia has to do more with the predatory political culture of the Ethiopian state, which is directly responsible for the underdevelopment and political instability in Ethiopia.

This book shares insights on the landscape of administration and enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights in Ethiopia. It argues the benefits of IP regime have to be envisioned with institutional capacity. This book shares the notions of New Institutional Economics (NIE) to define institutional capacity. Quality of IP laws should be seen as crucial element of institutional capacity. IP administration and enforcement in developing countries as in the case of Ethiopia may face conundrums. This, however, cannot hide the prospect of the IP regime if the country has liberalized trade, good inflow of FDI and promising technological capability. The Status of Ethiopia in the aforementioned criterion is addressed. A critical assessment is made on the development of IP rights, current IP rights administration and enforcement practices in Ethiopia to identify the challenges and prospects. Relevant policy considerations have been drawn from the analysis. This book is aimed to serve as a reference to IP researchers worldwide who are interested in having in-depth understanding how IP fits in the development aspiration and machinery of developing countries like Ethiopia.

This volume of the Research in Organizational Sciences is entitled "Received Wisdom, Kernels of Truth, and Boundary Conditions in Organizational Studies". Received wisdom is knowledge imparted to peopleby others and is based on authority and tenacity as sources of human knowledge. Authority refers to theacceptance of knowledge as truth because of the position and credibility of the knowledge source. Tenacityrefers to the continued presentation of a particular bit of information by a source until this bit ofinformation is accepted as true by receivers. The problem for organizational studies, however, is that thisreceived wisdom often becomes unquestioned assumptions which guide interpretation of the world and decisions made about the world. Receivedwisdom, therefore, may lead to organizational practices which provide little or no benefit to the organization and, potentially, negative organizationaleffects, because this received wisdom is no longer valid. The 14 papers in this volume all, in some way, strive to question received wisdom and presentalternatives which expand our understanding of organizational behavior in some way. The chapters in this volume each strive to present new ways ofunderstanding organizational constructs, and in so doing reveal how received wisdom has often led to confirmation bias in organizational science. Theknowledge that some perceived truths are actually the products of received wisdom and do not stand up to close scrutiny shakes up things ...

This study analyses the findings of a comprehensive assessment of inequalities in health in Ethiopia. Examining the link between poverty, ill-health and health inequalities in the Ethiopian context is very important, because according to UNDP (2010) finding using multi-dimensional poverty index (MPI), Ethiopia is the second poorest and highly impoverished country in the world, with the number of MPI poor people amounting to 70.7 million and with the percentage of MPI poor people at 90%. In this study data come from Ethiopian DHS, covering the years 2000-2005. In the multivariate analysis a logit regression model was used to estimates inequalities in infant and under-5 years’ child survival, and inequalities in access to and utilisation of child health services. This study concludes that policy measures that tackle health inequalities will have a positive impact in Ethiopia. Health inequalities studies in Ethiopia and Sub-Saharan Africa countries should focus on systematic analysis of different socio-economic groups. The finding of this study support investing in the Ethiopia’s health extension package is a necessary but not sufficient condition for addressing rural health problems.

The rapidly expanding population of youth gangs and street children is one of the most disturbing issues in many cities around the world. These children are perceived to be in a constant state of destitution, violence and vagrancy, and therefore must be a serious threat to society, needing heavy-handed intervention and 'tough love' from concerned adults to impose societal norms on them and turn them into responsible citizens. However, such norms are far from the lived reality of these children. The situation is further complicated by gender-based violence and masculinist ideologies found in the wider Ethiopian culture, which influence the proliferation of youth gangs. By focusing on gender as the defining element of these children's lives - as they describe it in their own words - this book offers a clear analysis of how the unequal and antagonistic gender relations that are tolerated and normalized by everyday school and family structures shape their lives at home and on the street.Paula Heinonen (née Sinicco) is of Ethiopian/Italian parentage and grew up in Addis Ababa. She is College Lecturer in Gender Studies and the Anthropology of Development at Hertford, University of Oxford. Previously, she was Tutor and Visiting Fellows Program Coordinator at the International Gender Studies Centre, University of Oxford and Senior Lecturer in Anthropology and Head of Research at the University of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Increasing globalization has brought academics and practitioners to study national cultures in management. Likewise, the trend towards running business through projects has brought broader perspectives such as national cultures into project management. Recent academic literature demonstrated that national culture has a major impact on management practices. However, the element of national culture is elusively described in the project management field. No extensive tests were found on the comparison of the project planning among countries, which could help to establish relationship between national cultures and project planning capabilities. Therefore, using GLOBE study to capture national cultures and Project Management Planning Quality(PMPQ) model to capture project planning approach and organizational planning support, this book compares national culture, project planning and organizational project planning support across four different countries: Malaysia,Japan,Sweden and Israel. It answers questions about the relevance of national culture to project planning and concludes with implications to project managers.

An organizational «North Star,» codifying valued behaviors for optimal performance The Culture Engine shows leaders how to create a high performing, values aligned culture through the creation of an organizational constitution. With practical step-by-step guidance, readers learn how to define their organization's culture, delineate the behaviors that contribute to greater performance and greater engagement, and draft a document that codifies those behaviors into a constitution that guides behavior towards an ideal: a safe, inspiring workplace. The discussion focuses on people, including who should be involved at the outset and how to engage employees from start to finish, while examples of effective constitutions provide guidance toward drafting a document that can actualize an organization's potential. Culture drives everything that happens in an organization day to day, including focus, priorities, and the treatment of employees and customers. A great culture drives great performance, and can help attract and retain great talent. But a great culture isn't something that evolves naturally. The Culture Engine is a guide to strategically planning a culture by compiling the company's guiding principles and behaviors into an organizational constitution. Decide which behaviors and attitudes are desired in the organization Secure leader commitment to planning, drafting, and implementing the document Learn the most effective way to socialize the draft statement and get everyone on board Model desired behaviors to boost employee engagement throughout the process Organizational culture is not an amorphous thing – it comes down from the top, inspired and exemplified by the leadership. It can steer a company up or down, keep it on mission or force it off-course. For an organization to fulfill its potential, the culture must be on-point, truly reflecting the heart of the company from leaders to team members across the company. The Culture Engine helps leaders define the playing field, pushing performance to the next level.

The amount of available research from non-western countries is limited. By investigating empowerment, psychological contract fulfillment, and communication as antecedents to organizational justice (distributive, procedural, and interactional), and organizational citizenship behaviour and turnover intention as outcomes in Chinese organizations, the book provides insight into the relationships surrounding organizational justice in non-western cultural contexts and suggests guidelines for international companies on how to promote perceptions of organizational justice and improve employees' performance in their organizations.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,7, University of applied sciences, Cologne, course: Strategic Corporate Management, language: English, abstract: The character of a company´s culture or work climate is gaining in importance. Culture is a product of the core values and business principles that executives espouse, the standards of what is ethically acceptable and what is not, the work practices and behaviours that define "how we do things around here", its approach to people management and style of operating, the "chemistry" and the "personality" that permeates its work environment, and the stories that get told over and over to illustrate and reinforce the company´s values, business principles, and traditions. A company´s culture is important because it influences the organization´s actions and approaches to conduct the business - in a very real sense, the culture is the company´s "operating system" or organizational DNA. All in all, culture as a concept is difficult to define and differs from company to company. The crafting of a strategy represents a managerial commitment to pursue a particular set of actions in growing the business, attracting and pleasing customers, competing successfully, conducting operations, and improving the company´s financial and market performance. Even companies with same strategic and business concepts and comparable success dif...

The impact of employee fairness perceptions on organizational outcomes have been explored by a wide range of research over the last 30 years. Previous studies found relationships between organizational justice and job satisfaction, organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviors, and productivity. However, there has been minimal research exploring the relationship of employee commitment to supervisor with organizational justice. This book explores the relationship between commitment to supervisor, organizational justice, organizational citizenship behavior and intentions to leave. Previous studies show that the relationship an employee has with their supervisor impacts job satisfaction, extra-role behavior, and intentions to leave. This book adds to the literature in identifying commitment to supervisor as a mediating variable in the relationship between organizational justice and the dependent variables. The results have important implications for organizations in that the relationship formed between a leader and their employees can have far reaching implications for organizational effectiveness and ultimately organizational profitability.

The book that defined the field, updated and expanded for today's organizations Organizational Culture and Leadership is the classic reference for managers and students seeking a deeper understanding of the inter-relationship of organizational culture dynamics and leadership. Author Edgar Schein is the 'father' of organizational culture, world-renowned for his expertise and research in the field; in this book, he analyzes and illustrates through cases the abstract concept of culture and shows its importance to the management of organizational change. This new fifth edition shows how culture has become a popular concept leading to a wide variety of research and implementation by various organizations and expands the focus on the role of national cultures in influencing culture dynamics, including some practical concepts for how to deal with international differences. Special emphasis is given to how the role of leadership varies with the age of the organization from founding, through mid-life to old age as the cultural issues vary at each stage. How culture change is managed at each stage and in different types of organizations is emphasized as a central concern of leader behavior..
