This book on quantum optics is from the point of view of an experimentalist. It approaches the theory of quantum optics with the language of optical modes of classical wave theory, with which experimentalists are most familiar. This approach makes the transition easy from classical optics to quantum optics. The emphasis on the multimode description of an optical system is more realistic than in most quantum optics textbooks. After the theoretical part, the book goes directly to the two most basic experimental techniques in quantum optics and establishes the connection between the experiments and the theory. The applications include some key quantum optics experiments, and a few more current interests that deal with quantum correlation and entanglement, quantum noise in phase measurement and amplification, and quantum state measurement.

The progressive nano-technology makes it necessary, the applicability for that already admitted concepts from classical thermodynamics on the microscopic level to examine. Questions about the extensivity of the energy and entropy, as well as about the existence of a temperature are just as important as the investigation of thermodynamic cyclic processes for quantum systems. This theses studies small quantum systems in nonequillibrium and may shed light on some new aspects of quantum thermodynamics. Heat conduction in driven as well as in undriven cases are examined on the basis of a possible local description.

Quantum Optics in Phase Space provides a concise introduction to the rapidly moving field of quantum optics from the point of view of phase space. Modern in style and didactically skillful, Quantum Optics in Phase Space prepares students for their own research by presenting detailed derivations, many illustrations and a large set of workable problems at the end of each chapter. Often, the theoretical treatments are accompanied by the corresponding experiments. An exhaustive list of references provides a guide to the literature. Quantum Optics in Phase Space also serves advanced researchers as a comprehensive reference book. Starting with an extensive review of the experiments that define quantum optics and a brief summary of the foundations of quantum mechanics the author Wolfgang P. Schleich illustrates the properties of quantum states with the help of the Wigner phase space distribution function. His description of waves ala WKB connects semi-classical phase space with the Berry phase. These semi-classical techniques provide deeper insight into the timely topics of wave packet dynamics, fractional revivals and the Talbot effect. Whereas the first half of the book deals with mechanical oscillators such as ions in a trap or atoms in a standing wave the second half addresses problems where the quantization of the radiation field is of importance. Such topics extensively discussed include optical interferometry, the atom-field interaction, quantum state preparation and measurement, entanglement, decoherence, the one-atom maser and atom optics in quantized light fields. Quantum Optics in Phase Space presents the subject of quantum optics as transparently as possible. Giving wide-ranging references, it enables students to study and solve problems with modern scientific literature. The result is a remarkably concise yet comprehensive and accessible text- and reference book – an inspiring source of information and insight for students, teachers and researchers alike.

In recent years there has been an increasing use of logical methods and significant new developments have been spawned in several areas of computer science, ranging from artificial intelligence and software engineering to agent-based systems and the semantic web. In the investigation and application of logical methods there is a tension between:* the need for a representational language strong enough to express domainknowledge of a particular application, and the need for a logical formalism general enough to unify several reasoning facilities relevant to the application, on the one hand, and* the need to enable computationally feasible reasoning facilities,on the other hand.Second-order logics are very expressive and allow us to represent domainknowledge with ease, but there is a high price to pay for the expressiveness. Most second-order logics are incomplete and highly undecidable. It is the quantifiers which bind relation symbols that make second-order logics computationally unfriendly. It is therefore desirable to eliminate these second-order quantifiers, when this is mathematically possible; and often it is.If second-order quantifiers are eliminable we want to know under which conditions, we want to understand the principles and we want to develop methods for second-order quantifier elimination. This book provides the first comprehensive, systematic and uniform account of the state-of-the-art of second-order quantifier elimination in classical and non-classical logics. Grover's quantum search algorithm is an important landmark discovery in the area of quantum computing that drives a quantum computer from a known initial state(source state) to an unknown final state(target state) by using selective phase inversions of these states. The algorithm is simply a successive iteration of the Grover's search operator, which is a product of selective inversion operators of source and target states. In its original form, Grover's operator performs the selective inversions only on a unique source state and a unique target state. In the generalized version, we make our search operator to perform selective inversions on more than one source and target states. First, we find that the case of selective inversions of two source and two target states can be easily analysed somewhat similar to the case of Grover's algorithm. But unlike Grover's operator, the selective inversions of three source and three target states is not so easy to study analytically and hence we perform numerical calculations on some specific cases. We find that these generalized search operators also give us a successful quantum search as expected.

Quantum theory is a fundamental branch of physics which describes physical phenomena at scales typical of the quantum realm of atomic and subatomic length scales, where the action is on the order of the Planck constant. At these scales, many everyday concepts concerning physical objects and energy (including the photons making up visible light) are believed to behave and interact extremely differently than is usually seen in daily life.

2012 Reprint of 1955 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Dirac is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest physicists. He was one of the founders of quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics. His early contributions include the modern operator calculus for quantum mechanics, which he called transformation theory, and an early version of the path integral. His relativistic wave equation for the electron was the first successful attack on the problem of relativistic quantum mechanics. Dirac founded quantum field theory with his reinterpretation of the Dirac equation as a many-body equation, which predicted the existence of antimatter and matter-antimatter annihilation. He was the first to formulate quantum electrodynamics, although he could not calculate arbitrary quantities because the short distance limit requires renormalization. Dirac discovered the magnetic monopole solutions, the first topological configuration in physics, and used them to give the modern explanation of charge quantization. He developed constrained quantization in the 1960s, identifying the general quantum rules for arbitrary classical systems. These lectures were given delivered and published during his tenure at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study in the 1930's.

This is the first of a two-volume work combining two fundamental components of contemporary computing into classical deductive computing, a powerful form of computation, highly adequate for programming and automated theorem proving, which, in turn, have fundamental applications in areas of high complexity and/or high security such as mathematical proof, software specification and verification, and expert systems. Deductive computation is concerned with truth-preservation: This is the essence of the satisfiability problem, or SAT, the central computational problem in computability and complexity theory. The Turing machine provides the classical version of this theory—classical computing—with its standard model, which is physically concretized—and thus spatial-temporally limited and restricted—in the von Neumann, or digital, computer. Although a number of new technological applications require classical deductive computation with non-classical logics, many key technologies still do well—or exclusively, for that matter—with classical logic. In this first volume, we elaborate on classical deductive computing with classical logic. The objective of the main text is to provide the reader with a thorough elaboration on both classical computing and classical deduction with the classical first-order predicate calculus with a view to computational implementations. As a complement to the mathematical-based exposition of the topics we offer the reader a very large selection of exercises. In Quantum Psychoanalysis: Essays on Physics, Mind ,and Analysis Today Gerald J. Gargiulo seeks to align psychoanalytic theory with physic’s new probabilistic conception of the physical world and, in so doing, to provide psychoanalytic clinicians with a needed new metapsychology to support current intersubjective perspectives. The post-modern conception of quantum physics has called into question the certainty of classical physics, which sought law-like patterns of physical forces in a physical world of absolute categories that exist independent of subjective interpretation. It is well known that the new clinical theories that have emerged in psychoanalysis since Freud, as a result of treatment experiences with a wider variety of patients, have not fit well with his original underlying metapsychological categories (e.g., id, ego, superego) and his explanations of competing energic forces (e.g., repression, repetition compulsion), which he created out of the modernist view of Newtonian (classical) physics of his time. Although the post-Freudian theories of object relations, self psychologies and relational psychotherapies have their differences, all share a contemporary focus on the indeterminacy of interactions between two subjectivities—patient and therapist---as they engage in mutual interpretation to create particular realities.Invoking the new concepts and categories from quantum physics (e.g., non-locality, entanglement), Gargiulo presents a post-modern perspective that p...

Quantum Physics for Scientists and Technologists is a self-contained, comprehensive review of this complex branch of science. The book demystifies difficult concepts and views the subject through non-physics fields such as computer science, biology, chemistry, and nanotechnology. It explains key concepts and phenomena in the language of non-physics majors and with simple math, assuming no prior knowledge of the topic. Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Mathematics - Algebra, , language: English, abstract: In this thesis, using asymptotic integration, we have investigated the asymptotic of the eigensolutions and the deficiency indices of fourth order differential operators with unbounded coefficients as well as the location of absolutely continuous spectrum of self-adjoint extension operators. We have mainly endeavored to compute eigenvalues of fourth order differential operators when the coefficients are unbounded, determine the deficiency indices of such differential operator and the location of the absolutely continuous spectrum of the self-adjoint extension operator together with their spectral multiplicity. Results obtained for deficiency indices were in the range (2, 2) ≤ defT ≤ (4, 4) under different growth and decay conditions of co-efficients.The concept of unbounded operators provides an abstract framework for dealing with differential operators and unbounded observable such as in quantum mechanics. The theory of unbounded operators was developed by John Von Neumann in the late 1920s and early 1930s in an effort to solve problems related to quantum mechanics and other physical observables. This has provided the background on which other scholars have developed their work in differential operators. Higher order differential operators as defined on Hilbert spaces have received much attention though there still lays the problem of computing the eigenvalues of these ...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Psychology - Ancillary Science, grade: 1,7, LMU Munich, language: English, abstract: The term psi denotes all phenomena which cannot be explained by the laws of classical physics. Precognition is a form of psi, whereby the future influences the present. We conducted a study to test if strong mental activation through high-arousal visual stimuli caused smokers to exhibit precognition and influence a quantum random distribution in their favor. A Bayesian one sample t test revealed a Bayes Factor BF10 = 12.56, indicating strong evidence for the display of precognition. We found no gender differences and no statistically significant influence of nicotine dependency or smoking addiction on precognition. We outline several explanatory models of quantum mechanics and discuss limitations of the study as well as possible implications of psi-phenomena.

This invaluable book provides an elementary description of supersymmetric quantum mechanics which complements the traditional coverage found in the existing quantum mechanics textbooks. It gives physicists a fresh outlook and new ways of handling quantum-mechanical problems, and also leads to improved approximation techniques for dealing with potentials of interest in all branches of physics. The algebraic approach to obtaining eigenstates is elegant and important, and all physicists should become familiar with this. The book has been written in such a way that it can be easily appreciated by students in advanced undergraduate quantum mechanics courses. Problems have been given at the end of each chapter, along with complete solutions to all the problems. The text also includes material of interest in current research not usually discussed in traditional courses on quantum mechanics, such as the connection between exact solutions to classical soliton problems and isospectral quantum Hamiltonians, and the relation to the inverse scattering problem.

Quantum mechanics (QM) is latently present in the life of electrical engineers already, since the hardware of todays information technology – from electrical data processing, through interconversion of electronic and optical information, to data storage and visualization – works on QM principles. New developments in micro- and opto-electronics and the advent of quantum information processing will soon make the active understanding of QM unavoidable for engineers, too. Unfortunately, the principles of QM can only be formulated mathematically, so even introductory books on the subject are mostly rather abstract. This book, written mainly for BSc students, tries to help the reader by showing «QM in action», demonstrating its surprising effects directly in applications, like lighting technology, lasers, photo- and solar cells, flash memories and quantum bits. While the axioms and basic concepts of quantum mechanics are introduced without compromises, the math is kept at a level which is required from electrical engineers anyhow. Computational work is spared by the use of Applets which also visualize the results. Among the host of other didactic features are learning objectives, chapter summaries, self-testing questions, and problems with solutions, while two appendices summarize the knowledge in classical physics and mathematics which is needed for this book.

We may have lived knowing that the world around us operates in a way as if we observe them to be. This knowledge of how the universe operates, based primarily of our observations, has enabled us to predict actions and motions and allowed us to build machines and equipments that have made our lives easier and more enjoyable. The field that allowed us to do that is classical physics. The world, however, is advancing and our knowledge of how things are expands over time. We have discovered in the last few decades that these sets of rules that we have devised can perfectly describe the large-scale world but cannot accurately define the behaviors of particles in the microscopic world. This necessitated another field to explain the different behavior in the microscopic world: quantum physics.

The book treats such diverse topics as the microscopic theory of critical phenomena, superfluid dynamics, quantum conductance, light scattering, transport processes, and dissipative structures, all in the framework of the foundations of statistical physics and thermodynamics. It shows the quantum origins of problems in classical statistical physics. One focus of the book is fluctuations that occur due to the discrete nature of matter, a topic of growing importance for nanometer scale physics and biophysics. Another focus concerns classical and quantum phase transitions, in both monatomic and mixed particle systems. This fourth edition extends the range of topics considered to include, for example, entropic forces, electrochemical processes in biological systems and batteries, adsorption processes in biological systems, diamagnetism, the theory of Bose-Einstein condensation, memory effects in Brownian motion, the hydrodynamics of binary mixtures. A set of exercises and problems is to be found at the end of each chapter and, in addition, solutions to a subset of the problems is provided. The appendices cover Exact Differentials, Ergodicity, Number Representation, Scattering Theory, and also a short course on Probability.

The main objective to the study of theory of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) is to insure or find out properties of solutions of PDE that are not directly attainable by direct analytical means. Certain function spaces have certain known properties for which solutions of PDEs can be classified. As a result, this work critically looked into some function spaces and their properties. We consider extensively, Lp-spaces, distribution theory and sobolev spaces. The emphasis is made on sobolev spaces, which permit a modern approach to the study of differential equations. Looking at the linear elliptic partial differential equations considered in this work, we see that the key is Lax-Milgram theorem and the full understanding of Sobolev spaces and its properties. We are able to remove the rigor associated with second order partial differential equations and present it in the form that we can easily handle through the function spaces discussed. The book is based on variational formulation of some Boundary Value Problems (PDEs) using some known theorem (Lax-Milgram Theorem) to ascertain the existence and uniqueness of weak solution to such linear Elliptic PDEs.

Integrability of a dynamical system is a concept which is widely discussed for a long time in physics, mathematics and somewhat differently in different contexts. It can also be considered as a mathematical property that can be successfully used to obtain more predictive power and quantitative information to understand the system globally. Integrable models form a beautiful class of physical models in the sense that they are exactly solvable. There are various circumstances in which interest in integrability can arise. In past non-linear ordinary and partially differential equations are generally used to study for the description of natural phenomena, such as weather changes, growth of population, non-linear dynamical systems, solitary waves, propagation of light in optical fibre. The evolution of typical dynamical systems is often described by nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations. One can learn a lot about nonlinear dynamical systems as the invariants are the analytic functions, and analytic results are much easier to use, to interpret and to generalize. Treating the integrable case as basic zeroth order exact solutions.

The main topic of this book is quantum mechanics, as the title indicates. It specifically targets those topics within quantum mechanics that are needed to understand modern semiconductor theory. It begins with the motivation for quantum mechanics and why classical physics fails when dealing with very small particles and small dimensions. Two key features make this book different from others on quantum mechanics, even those usually intended for engineers: First, after a brief introduction, much of the development is through Fourier theory, a topic that is at the heart of most electrical engineering theory. In this manner, the explanation of the quantum mechanics is rooted in the mathematics familiar to every electrical engineer. Secondly, beginning with the first chapter, simple computer programs in MATLAB are used to illustrate the principles. The programs can easily be copied and used by the reader to do the exercises at the end of the chapters or to just become more familiar with the material. Many of the figures in this book have a title across the top. This title is the name of the MATLAB program that was used to generate that figure. These programs are available to the reader. Appendix D lists all the programs, and they are also downloadable at http://booksupport.wiley.com

The variational cluster approximation, based on the self-energy functional theory for electrons, is one of the quantum cluster methods, we introduced to investigate the broken symmetry states of strongly correlated systems. Layered organic compounds, in which dimers of organic molecules form an anisotropic triangular lattice, are among materials that show frustration. We discuss the two-dimensional one-band Hubbard model used for studying these compounds. A comparison of the normal state and Néel antiferromagnetic ordered phase energies, enables us to conclude that this order is dominant at large values of electron interactions. Moreover, various pairings of d-wave superconductivity is discussed in relation with cluster and lattice point group symmetries. No evidence of homogeneous coexistence of antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconducting phases is found. We also investigate a spiral magnetic order on the isotropic triangular lattice, where no Néel antiferromagnetic order is found. Density of states points out that the system is metallic at weak coupling. An insulating phase, without long-range order is found at stronger coupling, which we conjecture to be a spin liquid phase.
