The book provides an account of the complex number of problems in the pastoral areas of the Horn of Africa. It sets out to point to the causes and the origin of the problems that pastoral peoples in those areas commonly face. From the discussion of the available literature and the outcomes of most of the development interventions made in the region, the book shows that the usual myths and misconceptions of old orthodoxies and problems still prevail and that these form basis of misunderstandings and ignorance about the pastoral production system. The latter also form the building blocks to erroneous concepts such as ‘economic irrationality’, ‘mismanagement of common properties and environments by the pastoral herders. Examples of some development interventions and their impacts were discussed. The book also discusses some alternative approaches and options for the development of pastoral people, resources and environments and concludes that the use of the indigenous technical knowledge and skills of the local people is crucial if real improvement of the living conditions of pastoralists, their local environments and livestock and success of any development project or effort.

This research studies Yemeni foreign policy towards the Horn of Africa. It mainly focuses on the importance the Horn of Africa represents to Yemen National Security. The research argues that although the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Horn of Africa are the main regional factors shaping Yemeni foreign policy, the Horn of Africa took priority over the Gulf Cooperation Council during the period 2000 to 2010. This research tries to answer some questions such as why the Horn of Africa was the most important factor shaping the Yemeni foreign policy and what were the policies and actions Yemeni foreign policy adopted to deal with the threats coming from that strategic area.

Today, the Horn of Africa is a hot spot of international terrorism. Thanks to its geographical proximity and strong historical tie with the Middle East where many militant Islamic extremists originate, it has become a breeding ground and haven of international terrorist groups. Although there are some complementary factors; religion particularly Islam manifested in the form of Wahhabism ideology is the major cause of international terrorism in the sub-region. Against this backdrop, IGAD started initiatives to counter-terrorism. As a regional development organization, it has extended its mandate to take peace and security in the Sub-region seriously since 1996. Likewise, since the September 11 tragedy on America, member states have became conscious about the security challenge posed by international terrorism and planned to take a joint action. Accordingly, IGAD focused on looking for ways and means to support the efforts of member states in fighting terrorism. However, though IGAD has gone a long way in countering international terrorism in the Horn of Africa, its effort is far from success due to institutional, sub-regional and external involvement challenges.

The fiscal year (FY) 2017 National Defense Authorization Act, which includes a title to reform the Department of Defense (DoD) security cooperation, has far-reaching implications for U.S. defense interests in Africa. As the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee notes, “the Department of Defense continues to place greater emphasis on security cooperation, to include building partner capacity.” The term “building partner capacity” (BPC) widens the focus of security cooperation as a whole-of-government effort, and makes clear congressional interest in treating security cooperation as a defense institution building endeavor. In response to the law, this book examines and recommends specific steps the DoD can take to build partner capacity successfully in Africa and meet congressional direction.

The 21st century brings up a great chance for the African continent, an opportunity that shouldn't be missed. There are three great advantages for Africa: the rising demand for natural resources, the need of workforce, but also the quest for new markets, and Africa is a market of over one billion people. Africa can provide all of these and many more. The articles are focused on the role of the United States, China, Russia, India and Brazil in the development process of Africa, from economic and political ties to big investment and loans, without neglecting society and cultural aspects, referring to concepts like "power", "soft power" and "globalization". We tried to answer two questions "Is Africa the next big thing?" and "What global power will have greater influence in Africa?". We overviewed as well the role of the Organization of African Unity, today the African Union, and what future challenges it faces. Last but not least, you will find some short articles, previously written on my blog, on politics and sports, elections, failed states and the power of internet in Africa.

The subject of food security or insecurity is a complex development issue in most third world countries. In a given locality, the pervasiveness of food insecurity could be a measure of local level of governance, natural disaster, conflict, war, power imbalance, highly skewed economic distribution among citizens, lack of and competition for natural resources, over population and/or other factors.Currently, over 800 million people or 13 per cent of the world’s population are chronically undernourished in a world that can produce sufficient food for everyone and day in and day out, they wake up hungry and go to bed hungry. In Sub-Saharan Africa only,it is projected that by 2020, the number of food-insecure people will exceed 500 million, out of a total population of roughly 1 billion. Within this sub-continent,the Horn of Africa is one of the most volatile regions which might mainly be triggered by food insecurity. The driving forces of food insecurity in this area are not easy to analyse and at times could be enigmatic.Using the case of Djibouti & Somalia, this book explicates how a number of factors are involving in bringing down a country to a state of unparalleled food insecurity & termoil.

The Crises of Postcoloniality in Africa is an assemblage of transdisciplinary essays that offer a spirited reflection on the debate and phenomenon of postcoloniality in Africa, including the changing patterns and ramifications of problems, challenges and opportunities associated with it. A key conceptual rhythm that runs through the various chapters of the book is that, far from being demised, postcoloniality is still firmly embedded in Africa, manifesting itself in both blatant and insidious forms. Among the important themes covered in the book include the concepts of postcolonialism, postcoloniality, and neocolonialism; Africa’s precolonial formations and the impact of colonialism; the enduring patterns of colonial legacies in Africa; the persistent contradictions between African indigenous institutions and western versions of modernity; the unravelling of the postcolonial state and issues of armed conflict, conflict intervention and peacebuilding; postcolonial imperialism in Africa and the US-led global war on terror, the historical and postcolonial contexts of gender relations in Africa, as well as pan-Africanism and regionalist approaches to redressing the crises of postcoloniality.

The text is a comprehensive description of numerous political economy phenomena since South Africa gained its political independence and covers some important themes that have not been discussed in detail in other publications on post-apartheid South Africa. The book also updates earlier work of the author on policy and law making, land and agriculture, education and training as well as on poverty and inequality in post-apartheid South Africa thereby providing a wide-ranging overview of the socio-economic development approaches followed by the successive post-apartheid administrations. Interestingly, three chapters focus on various aspects of the post-apartheid South African economy: economic policies, economic empowerment and industrial development. Most of the articles are from established academics, researchers, development practitioners and policymakers as well as stakeholders in Africa. Though the perspectives are as varied as the contributions, the underlining themes are the current scramble for Africa and the various development trajectories vis-à-vis those of other regions of the world. Contributors also address the continuous interactions and inevitable contradictions between Africa and the rest of the world. The various contributions seek answers to a number of fundamental questions around Africa's position in the global political economy, focusing on such areas as international economic relations, political and economic reforms, democratic transitions and consolidations, human rights and security. Though contributions show that Africa faces enormous challenges in the global political economy, they also point to the current dynamism and optimism in many parts of the continent. ______________________________________________Bhekinkosi Moyo is currently based in Dakar, Senegal, where he conducts and manages research for TrustAfrica: a grant-making foundation focusing on regional integration, peace and security as well as citizenship and identity. Drought pose one of the greater challenge in Africa in general in Ethiopia in particular; Global climate change is now generally considered to be in progress and is expected to result in an increased occurrence of drought in specific regions. Food security will be unsustainable without increasing yield in marginal environments, especially in drought-prone areas. We have to introduce drought tolerant crops which can be used as food and as feed; drought tolerant legume like pigeonpea is well adapted to such kind of environment, hence Pigeonpea can be used as an adaptation option to decrease the effect of climate change especially in Sub-Sahara Africa.

Seventy percent of the global burden of mental disorders is located in low and middle income countries (LMIC),including sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, in Africa, only 0.62% of the national health budget is allocated to mental health compared to a global median of 2.8% and 5% in Europe. The government is the source of funding in 62%of patients with severe mental disorder in the World Health Organisation (WHO), Africa Region, the lowest of all the WHO regions, and lower compared to a global median of 79%. This is compounded by poor resources, with mental health outpatient facilities in WHO Africa Region being less that 10% of the global median. To address these problems, the WHO launched its Mental Health Action Gap Programme (mhGAP) in 2008, to scale-up mental health services in low and middle income countries (LMIC). The book is directed to all policy makers in sub-Saharan Africa to aid decision making about the urgent need for sustainable and relevant mental health care strategies, and the important areas that need priority. The book should be helpful to local and international researchers in formulating research questions relevant to the African continent and it will be of interest to medical practitioners and students in the region as adjunct to standard text books.

Changes in analysing prospects for socio-economic and political development in Africa has in the recent past shifted greatly to include actors outside of the traditional political elite category. This change in analysis has coincided with a new conceptualisation of civil society; the role of civil society is become more crucial in governance, and especially in pursuing socio-economic and political development in Africa. This book explores changes in Africa's governance processes and the opportunities that the changing context is creating for substantive civil society engagement. It examines Africa's democratic processes highlighting some core aspects of the democratic consolidation endeavours to date. In this analysis, Uganda's contemporary civil society context is used as a case illustration to examine how changing governance processes are creating opportunities for civil society engagement in national policy framework.

Inevitably the last 20 years of statelessness and chaos has left the Somali economy destitute and made Somalia to be ranked among the five poorest ‘countries’ in the world. Contributors to this volume examine efforts at reconstituting the failed Somali state and the role of the Somali Diaspora and civil society groups in the processes. They also analyse how the Somali Diaspora and civil society in Somalia engage and cooperate to further processes of state-reconstitution in Somalia as well as help the Somali Diaspora adjust in their host nations.

Nigeria and South Africa provide the socioeconomic and political contrasts in the African condition. Some of these contrasts can be demonstrated in the following dialectics: Nigeria is the Africa of human resources, South Africa is a land of mineral resources; Nigeria is repellant to European settlement; South Africa is a magnet for such settlement; Nigeria is a mono-racial society, South Africa is a multiracial society; Nigeria is grappling with the politics of religion, South Africa's is pre-occupied with the politics of secularism; Nigeria is Africa's largest exporter of oil, South Africa is Africa's largest consumer of oil; Nigeria is a paradigm of indigenization, South Africa is a paragon of Westernization. The first English translation of part one of Li Anshan's seminal work Feizhou Huaqiao Huaren Shi, A History of Overseas Chinese in Africa to 1911 explores early Chinese knowledge of and contacts with Africa through Chinese literature on Africa and current archeological evidence, suggesting Sino-African trade existed as early as the seventh century. Li provides readers with an uncomplicated history of Chinese in Africa, examining their story from multiple perspectives, using approaches and sources found in economic history, social history, international relations, and migration in world history. While Li maintains the first group of Chinese were prisoners brought by the Dutch from Southeast Asia in the seventeenth century, the vast majority of early Chinese in Africa were "free immigrants" and contract labors that established key communities and organizations. It is these early Chinese which laid foundations for and provide important context in interpreting the recent flow of Chinese migrants and capital into various parts of Africa. The book should be of value to African and world historians, sociologists, anthropologists, and students of African and Asian studies.

Urbanization in Africa also means rapid technological change. At the turn of the 21st century, mobile telephony appeared in urban Africa. Ten years later, it covered large parts of rural Africa and – thanks to the smartphone – became the main access to the internet. This development is part of technological transformations in digitalization that are supposed to bridge the urban and the rural and will make their borders blurred. They do so through the creation of economic opportunities, the flow of information and by influencing people’s definition of self, belonging and citizenship. These changes are met with huge optimism and the message of Information and Communications Technologies for Development (ICT4D) for Africa has been one of glory and revolution. Practice, however, reveals other sides. Increasingly, academic publications show that we are facing a new form of digital divide in which Africa is (again) at the margins. These technological transformations influence the relation between urban and rural Africa, and between ‘Africa’ and the World, and hence the field of African Studies both in its objects as well as in its forms of knowledge production and in the formulation of the problems we should study. In this lecture, Mirjam de Bruijn reflects on two decades of research experience in West and Central Africa and discusses how, for her, the field has changed. The author was forced to decolonize her thinking even further, and to enter into co-creation in knowledge product...

Essay from the year 2007 in the subject History - World History - Modern History, grade: 1c, University of Stirling, course: Apartheid and Resistance in South Africa, 1948 - 1994, language: English, abstract: Apartheid and Resistance in South Africa, 1948 - 1994Any account of the polarisation of African society into distinct white and black polarities, on the right and left wings of the political spectrum respectively, between 1960 and 1964 must be considered in the light of pre-existing relationships between whites and non-whites in South Africa, which manifested themselves in microcosm with events at Sharpeville on 21 March 1960. Critical to the discussion will be the role played by the National Party government, particularly relating to the creation of the Republic of South Africa in 1961, withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Nations in the same year, the 1961 General Election and the government's racial policy. The function of the United Party, as the party of Official opposition, will also be scrutinised, together with the role of the Liberal Party and the Progressive Party. Analysis of the ideologies of the African resistance movements, including the African National Congress, with Umkhonto we Sizwe, and the Pan-Africanist Congress, with Poqo, will further reveal reasons for the adoption of extreme opposing attitudes. Moreover, these diametric attitudes were subjected to influence from, and response to, international events both within Africa and globally.

"This is a timely, empirically solid, and theoretically sophisticated contribution to our understanding of one of Africa's recent 'small wars' . . . [that] throws new light on the 'crisis of youth' in post-colonial Africa, provides a fascinating critique of the notion of 'child' soldiers, explores the ways in which youth internalise the external world in negative self-images, [and] deepens our understanding of 'civil war' in Africa." · Michael Jackson, Harvard Divinity SchoolThrough the concept of "social navigation," this book sheds light on the mobilization of urban youth in West Africa. Social navigation offers a perspective on praxis in situations of conflict and turmoil. It provides insights into the interplay between objective structures and subjective agency, thus enabling us to make sense of the opportunistic, sometimes fatalistic and tactical ways in which young people struggle to expand the horizons of possibility in a world of conflict, turmoil and diminishing resources.Henrik E. Vigh is a researcher at the Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Torture Victims in Copenhagen. He holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen and has worked on issues of youth and conflict in both Europe and West Africa. He is currently researching undocumented West African migrants in Europe and the networks that they depend on, develop and are caught up in.

Malaria and Poverty in Africa

Malaria is a serious health and economic problem in Africa, afflicting more than half of the continent's population. Although HICV/AIDS, TB and nutritional deficiencies pose major development problems on the continent, the challenges presented by malaria are of a different kind, because the disease is widespread, persistent and grossly underestimated by the general population. The importance of malaria, along with HIV/AIDS and other diseases in the development agenda, is now recognised in Goal 6 of the Millennium Goals. This book provides the evidence required to design and implement malaria control strategies in Africa. The chapters analyse the nexus between poverty and malaria with a focus on policies that can be implemented at various levels of society to fight the disease. Malaria and Poverty in Africa is the outcome of a research sponsored by the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). Augustin Kwasi Fosu is the Director, Economic Division of the United Nations Commision for Africa, Addis Ababa, and former Director of Research at the AERC, Nairobi. Germano Mwabu is Professor of Economics at the University of Nairobi. He was co-director of the AERC project on Poverty Income Distribution and Labour Markets in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The idea to write this book was born during our visit to a mushroom farm house at Bunda College of Agriculture, University of Malawi, Lilongwe, Malawi, and also during our discussions with several beginners of mushroom farming activities in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and other countries in Africa. The visits were a part of a fact finding mission for a UNDP/UNOPS-funded Regional Project for Africa on Promoting Sustainable Development in Africa from Africa's biodiversity, which was based at the University of Namibia, and whose Founding Director was the second author of the book, who was then also a Founding UNESCO/UNU Chair for Africa, based in Namibia. The First Edition of the book was a product of a document compiled by Prof. S. T. Chang and Prof. K. E. Mshigeni in October 2000, within the broad umbrella of the UNDP/UNOPS Project referred to above. The objective of the First Edition of the book was to enable beginners of mushroom farming activities in Africa to have some basic understanding of mushroom biology and mushroom farming technologies. The current book updates the technologies involved, and shows the great advances recently made in mushroom science.

Beyond the Primary Commodity Trap offers an alternative paradigm for analysing African development from the current "aid and aids" narrative. Taking as its point of departure Africa's failure to extricate itself from over dependence on raw materials and its seeming inability to industrialise, it offers an analysis of the political forces that have shaped and continue to shape Africa's political economy. The book focuses particularly on the endemic poverty in the continent and how it interfaces with politics. Written with the general reader in mind, the book also examines some of the internal dynamics in Africa and how these combine with the continent's history and some other extraneous factors to explain the current conditions of economic poverty and the poverty of leadership in many parts of the continent.

A unique assessment of the Great War in sub-Saharan Africa in all its theatresThe great conflict fought between 1914 and 1918 set Europe ablaze, but, as the definition of ‘world war’ implies, embraced battlefields where the colonial interests of the protagonist nations inevitably collided. How this occurred on the continent of Africa has always fascinated military history students of the period, not least because these campaigns unconfined by the stagnation of trench warfare, as was the case on the Western Front, were fought over exotic terrains by national, militia and native forces often commanded by able and imaginative officers on both sides. Much focus has been given to the campaigns in East Africa, which features in detail in this book, but also included is the campaign fought in the arid landscape of South-West Africa (now Namibia) and those which took place in Equatorial Togoland (Ghana Volta) and The Cameroons in West Africa. The ‘South African Rebellion’ is also described. The author of this book, John Buchan, a writer of great talent and economy of phrase, was primarily known for his superlative adventure fiction. However, he was commissioned to write a multi-volume history of the First World War which enabled him to reveal his talent as an historian and from which this single volume edition has been selectively edited. Buchan’s text, appearing in this form for the first time in this Leonaur edition, includes many excellent maps and has been further enhanced by pho...

Civil conflicts in Africa range from few interstate wars to several intrastate conflicts characterized by secessionist movements, irredentism, coups and counter coups, genocide, wars of liberation to resource-based wars. The varied causes of conflicts in the continent's diverse and complex social formations are seen in ethnic terms and include struggles for economic/environmental resources, poor institutions of governance and issues of identity such as religion, language and racial differences. The core issue addressed in this volume is how to understand and explain the structural and analytical reasons for persistent civil conflicts in Africa. The core assumption is that most civil conflicts in Africa erupt largely because of the nature of state formation in the continent. Other significant variables that are explored as explanations for the persistent instances of civil conflicts in sub-Saharan Africa and the slow efforts at nation-building across the continent include issues of territoriality, climate change, ethnicity, ideological incongruities, institutional problems, the nature of postcolonial state, unreformed governance and economic structures, and corruption. This book also examines some sources of unresolved issues of territoriality and explains their connections to political violence and socio-political and cultural tensions across sub-Saharan Africa. It offers suggestions on how scholarly research and policies could help mediate if not mitigate future territor...

Across Africa, funerals and events remembering the dead have become larger and even more numerous over the years. Whereas in the West death is normally a private and family affair, in Africa funerals are often the central life cycle event, unparalleled in cost and importance, for which families harness vast amounts of resources to host lavish events for multitudes of people with ramifications well beyond the event. Though officials may try to regulate them, the popularity of these events often makes such efforts fruitless, and the elites themselves spend tremendously on funerals. This volume brings together scholars who have conducted research on funerary events across sub-Saharan Africa. The contributions offer an in-depth understanding of the broad changes and underlying causes in African societies over the years, such as changes in religious beliefs, social structure, urbanization, and technological changes and health.Michael Jindra is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and a visiting research scholar in the Center for the Study of Religion and Society at the University of Notre Dame. A soldiers view of war against Kafirs and ZulusThe author of this book was a young officer of the Somerset Light Infantry despatched to South Africa in the mid-Victorian period as part of the Queen Empress' red-coated forces that extended and maintained her Empire in the Dark Continent. His account is particularly interesting in that it puts the war against Cetywayo's Zulu nation within the context of the ongoing wars with the martial tribes of the region which led up to it. Parr's was experience and knowledge gained at first hand and so in addition to his appreciation and evaluation of the greater events in which he was embroiled he also provides the reader with intimate details and anecdotes of his own personal experiences of campaigning in the Cape. An essential component of every library on the Zulu conflict and available in the Leonaur edition in softback and hardcover with dust jacket for collectors.

There are milliards of off beam assumptions that Africa will always remain immobile in development of whatever type. This view has mainly been propounded by Western thinkers in order to make Africans internalise and reinforce this supposed dependency. Africa needs to embark on paradigm shift; and tweak and turn things around. Africa has what it take to do so quickly, especially now that new economic powers such as China and India are evolving as counterweight to the West. Shall Africa use these new economic forces to its advantage based on fair and win-win cooperation? To do so, Africa must make sure that it does not slink back into business as usual vis-a-vis beggarliness, dependence, frailty, gullibility, made-up backwardness, monkey business, and pipedreams, not to mention the nasty and narcissistic behaviours of its venal and navel-gazing rulers. Verily, Africa needs, inter alia, to use its God-given gifts, namely, immense resources, young population, abundance of vast and unexploited amounts of land. Equally, Africa must, without equivocation, invest copiously and earnestly in its people, the youth in the main. Most of all, Africa needs to shy away from all colonial carryovers and encumbrances. This volume shows many ways through and by which Africa can reverse the current imbroglio-cum-no-go it faces for the better; and thereby actualise the dream of being truly independent and prosperous.

This book offers far-reaching insights into perceptions of conflict in South Africa. Claude-Hélène Mayer's approach is remarkable, because she imparts the recollections of numerous people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The author captures the essence of about one-hundred interviews reflecting disparate attitudes towards social changes in the post-apartheid Republic of South Africa. Unexpected statements - for example, with respect to the continued existence of internalized apartheid - are carefully analyzed and hermeneutically understood. At the beginning of the research, presumptions might have raised expectations for the similarity between the narrative interviews. However, it becomes clear during the reading of this work that each interview was itself unique and each created a unique situation between the interviewer and the interviewee, inviting the reader to listen again and again to the spoken and analyzed words. The thorough, months-long field stays, from 1999 until 2004, emphasize the researcher's exhaustive effort better to understand the perspective of the interviewees. In addition to the book's research-related merits, its data can increase the cultural competence of those readers who are interested in information on specific predominant-cultural standards in present day South Africa. Readers can more fully appreciate how the people in South Africa live a special, dynamic form of their unmatched "unity in diversity."

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1,0, University of Wisconsin-Madison (Economics), course: Economics 477: Economic Development of Africa, language: English, abstract: This paper investigates the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) program in South Africa and its economic justification by analyzing the trends in both, intra- and interracial inequality, since the implementation of BEE. Even though inequality is driven by many different factors, this paper attempts to analyze whether BEE was able to effectively reduce inequality in the way that it was intended. My findings suggest that BEE might have helped to reduce inequality between different races, but that it increased inequality among black people.During Apartheid, black people were excluded from major parts of South Africa's economy. This resulted in an unequal income distribution in South Africa. Even after Apartheid ended in 1994 income was distributed unequally between races. In order to reduce this inequality and equalize opportunities between the different races in South Africa, the government implemented an affirmative action program called Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) in 2003. In this case and in the following sections, the word "black" defines a racial group, including Africans, coloreds and Indians and can thus be used as synonym for "non-whites." BEE introduced a scorecard which rates companies based on their economic inclusion of black peopl...

Values and Development in Southern Africa

Development has been on Africaís agenda for a long time but progress has been both varied and limited, partly due to the diverse levelsof the discussions ont he challenges and the interventions for tackling them. Africaís greatest challenge is the uneven development within and between its countries, and the pressing issues of extreme poverty in southern Africa, and the continent as a whole. Poverty causes its victims to suffer social exclusion and political repression. In addition, societies that experience poverty are also mostly under continuous threat of ecological disasters and diseases. All poor people are therefore plagued by loss of freedom and dignity, and are often unable to participate effectively in the political, economic, legal and social processes of their countries. This book focuses on the social and cultural dimensions of development dynamics and, in particular, the role of values in shaping development. Values are at the core of the hopes and aspirations of individuals, communities and societies. The book therefore explains the values that motivate and inform African communities and societies, with a view to facilitating a dialogue about sustainable development in Africa among academics, intellectuals, policy and decisionmakers, and the communities. It also investigates the social and cultural dynamics of development in Africa, as a better alternative to earlier studies that blame African culture for poverty and exclude the people of Africa in their definiti...
