The study is about some consequences effect of feeding a blend containing both genetically modified (GM) soybean and maize using albino rats. The animals were divided into two groups (A) and (B) were fed on blend of genetically modified and non-genetically modified soybean and maize with experimental diets iso-proteinic and iso-caloric. The results showed that no significant differences (P < 0.01) of body weight, and feed conversion ratio were found between the two groups. Therefore, the GM blend and non-GM one may be substantially equivalent.The differences among blood counts, blood indexes of PCV, MCV, MCH, MCHC and the relative fresh weight of heart, liver, kidney and spleen were not significant. No cases of mortality, abortion and sterility of the parents were observed during the study as well as no deformities of baby rats were seen.

In the European Union nations, and other countries including Japan, Australia and Malaysia, it is a legal requirement that food products containing genetically modified organism (GMO) materials are labelled as such in order that customers may make informed purchasing decisions. For manufacturers and consumers to be confident about these assertions, systems must be in place along the entire food chain which support the co-existence of GM and non GM materials whilst maintaining a strict segregation between the two. This book is an output of a European Union-funded project entitled «Co-Extra: GM and non-GM food and feed supply chains: their Co-Existence and Traceability». The objective of this four year project is to provide practical tools and methods for implementing co-existence that will: enable the co-existence of genetically modified (GM) and non-GM crops enable the segregation and tracing of genetically modified organism (GMO) materials and derived products along the food and feed chains anticipate the future expansion of the use of GMOs The project is designed to foster a robustly science-based debate amongst all of the stakeholders involved in the food and feed chains, and the tools will be assessed not only from a technical point of view but with regard to the economic and legal aspects. It also surveys the GMO-related legal regimes and practices that exist in and beyond the EU. This book examines the practical tools and methods available to implement the co-existence and traceability of GM and non-GM food materials along the entire food and feed chains, as demanded by consumers and by legislation in force in the EU and elsewhere. The increasing interest of users in efficiently retrieving and extracting relevant information, the need to keep up with new discoveries described in the literature or in biological databases, and the demands posed by the analysis of high throughput experiments, are the underlying forces motivating the development of Conceptual Biology tools, such as text-mining applications in molecular biology. Therefore the methods of Conceptual Biology have been used for this study to test the hypothesis, that genetically modified foods have no impact on public health. We studied the records of databases and those ones of Literature Based Discovery tools. After the binary scoring of the records with respect to their usefulness, they were also classified by their positive, neutral or negative conclusions with respect to the effect of genetically modified food on public health. In conclusion, we have to deny the hypothesis and therefore to state that genetically modified foods have an impact on public health. Maize is the main staple crop in East African mountains but its yield is affected by biotic and abiotic factors. Lepidopteran pests such as, Chilo partellus (Crambidae) and Busseola fusca (Noctuidae) reduced maize yield while soil elements increase the yield. In addition to enhancing maize yields, some soil element such as silicon (Si) aid plants in overcoming abiotic and biotic stresses. Hence, any factor that induces Si deficiency in soil might be detrimental to the plant growth and its resistance to insect pests and diseases. Understanding how the projected temperature increase will affect Si levels in soil and maize is crucial in promoting maize production in different agro-ecosystems in the face of climate change. This study evaluated the Si levels in both soil and maize plants cultivated along three altitudinal gradients of East African mountains (Machakos, Taita and Kilimanjaro) characterized by graded changes in climatic conditions. The study also linked the Si level in maize plants to lepidopteran pests' distribution.

While the United States (US) is a strong supporter of GM technology having adopted a rather lax regulation of trade with GM products, the European Union (EU) is representing a sceptical position towards this new technology and has even imposed a de facto moratorium on further approval of GM products from 1998 to 2004. The purpose of this book is an extensive analysis of the current status on risks and benefits of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and a suggestion on how an appropriate regulation of GM products could be derived. Potential guidelines are provided for policy formulation both in a qualitative and in a quantitative dimension. The US is applying the principle of substantial equivalence, which means that GM products are in their substance identical to products produced by conventional methods. Therefore, no new regulations are necessary for the trade with GM products. In contrast, the European Union (EU) disagrees that GM products are equivalent to their conventional counterparts due to the different production process. Instead, the EU refers to the precautionary principle in its GMO policy, meaning that trade with GM products should be restricted until it will be proven that no additional risks are implied by the use of these products. School faculty play an important role in the education and success of homeless students. Faculty's attitudes and perceptions of homeless students could influence their relationship with them. This study explores school faculty's attitudes and perceptions of homeless students through the use of a quantitative survey instrument and four open-ended questions. This study also explores homeless students' self-perceptions through the use of a quantitative survey instrument. Findings indicate that school faculty had slightly positive attitudes toward homeless students, as well as an array of experiences and suggestions for improving education. Homeless students had mostly positive self-perceptions. Findings from this study indicate the need to train and to educate faculty about students' experience with homelessness as well as the need for further research about homeless students' self-perceptions.

Pastoralist in developing countries keep livestock with unique genetically determined traits. In marginal environments, local livestock breeds are crucial for sustaining rural livelihoods by producing a wide range of products while requiring relatively low levels of input with regard to fodder, management and health care. Cattle stand out across in terms of provision of non- market services, including draught power, manure, risk management, asset storage, community bonding, and ceremonial services, amongst others. Therefore the maintenance of the adapted cattle breeds is ecologically more sustainable and will ensure sustainable food and livelihood provision for communities. However, economic forces of globalization as well as political backing for crossbreeding with exotic breed, among other factors have already resulted in the extinction of a large number of breeds and many more are threatened.

Primary data were collected using interview guides. A total of 240 respondents were selected using stratified random sampling technique in 6 rural and 6 urban markets in Ogun State. Weekly retail prices of yellow and white maize for five years (January 1999-December 2003) were analysed using the Bivariate Cointegration test and the Granger causality test to detect the presence and level of price integration. In Ogun State, domestic production of maize increased by 9 percent a year between 1990 - 2001. Although the growth in maize production may be attributed to cultivating more crop area and/or the adoption of improved open pollinated and hybrid maize varieties which provide the major stimulus for increased yield on the average. Annual growth rate of maize yields was 9.08 percent during 1990 - 2001. Most of the growth came from yellow maize, which increased at 8.92 percent annually, compared with 3.57 percent for white maize. Scientific Study from the year 2014 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, Wollega University (Department of Economics), language: English, abstract: This study has examined the impact of foreign aid on government expenditure in Ethiopia over the period 1981 to 2012 using Multivariate Vector Auto Regression analysis. All the necessary time series tests such as stationary test, co-integration, weak exiguity, and other tests are conducted. The empirical result from the long run fungibility equation result indicates that sectoral aid has negative effect on its sector spending in developmental sectors except for agricultural sector government spending. The estimate of agricultural aid also support that a 1percent increase in agricultural aid leads to a 0.83percent increase in agricultural spending. Aid other than health aid also has positive impact on health spending. The positive coefficient of aid other than the health implies that there is an aid diversion towards health sector from the others. The negative coefficients of sectoral aid on the sector spending and the negative coefficients of aid other than sector-specific aid, indicate diversion of aid away from the specific sector. Negative coefficients of explanatory variables may arise when there is a diversion of categorical aid from developmental investment towards non developmental expenditure such as general service government expenditures. Ethiopia has a spasmodic food security problem with in the general spectrum of other socioeconomic challenges. The country is among the most severely food insecure countries of the world characterized by high reliance on food imports and international food aid. The most important findings of the study include: a) the subsidies commitments to be undertaken under the WTO AoA provide a sufficient policy space to continue the existing support programs which are part of the food security strategy of the country. Thus, the Subsidies, domestic or export, provisions of the WTO AoA does not hinder a sound food security policy; b) opening of borders by lowering tariffs, which seems very likely, will represent a threat to domestic food production unless higher bound rates are negotiated.

The National Program of Biodiesel Production and Use was officially launched by the Brazilian government in 2004, having as one of its main objectives the inclusion of family agriculture into the biodiesel production chain on a sustainable basis. This oleaginous demonstrated to be the most adaptable crop to this specific location and it has been often cultivated in association with food crops such as maize and beans. Basing on that, this work builds upon the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach so as to provide a sustainability assessment of food and castor production among family farmers in the city of Morro do Chapéu. This analysis should be especially useful to professionals in Rural and Sustainable Development fields or anyone else who may be interested in sustainabilty-related topics.

Studies need to be conducted to investigate at which level along the seed value chain the deterioration in quality occurs. The current study assessed the change in quality of hybrid maize seed as it is transferred from seed companies (when seed has been processed and packaged) to agro-dealers. Specific objectives of the study were to determine the levels of phenotypic and genotypic variation in hybrid maize seed from seed companies and agro-dealers. A total of 120 samples of four hybrid maize varieties (improved varieties most favored by farmers) used in this study were collected from agro-dealers in 15 districts and from 3 seed companies. Alpha lattice design with two replications has been used. Data was collected on 33 morphological traits and all the 120 samples were genotyped using 128 SNP markers.The genetic distance analysis showed that agro-dealers' samples from Iganga, Masindi, Luwero, Soroti and Bukedea had high seed quality (genetically and phenotypically pure and similar to the seed companie...

No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health, Well-being and Quality Education - these are the first priorities of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were launched jointly by all UN Member States on January 1, 2016. The agenda of this agreement contains 17 main goals with a total of 169 targets and is dedicated to improving global living conditions and to address issues of environmental and economical sustainability with a planning horizon through to 2030. Development assistance from economically advanced countries, also referred to as aid, is one of the major means to provide financing for countries with less developed economies that face severe social problems, and which often cannot handle these problems alone. Previous studies have shown, however, that aid is ineffective and recommend comprehensive restructuring of the common aid practices. Investigations that analyse the pattern of aid flows find, moreover, that granting aid to certain recipient countries cannot only be explained by altruistic motives. They show that several strategic or non-strategic reasons have a high explanatory power for individual donor aid allocation. Against this background, the present study explores aid effectiveness of distinct bilateral donors. This is achieved by a large-scale panel data analysis applying per-capita economic growth, infant mortality and primary growth as indicators for measuring the contribution of aid to achieving the different SDGs.

Rheology is fundamentally important in food manufacturing in two major senses. Understanding the way in which a substance moves and behaves is essential in order to be able to transport and mix it during processing. Secondly, the rheology of a product dictates much of the consumer experience, e.g. in relation to texture and mouthfeel. This book doesn’t overwhelm the reader with complex mathematical equations but takes a simple and practically-focused approach, interpreting the implications of rheological data for use in different food systems. Through this approach industry-based food developers / rheologists, students, and academics are given clear, concise interpretation of rheological data which directly relates to actual perceived functionality in the food. The functionality may relate to texture, structure and mouthfeel, and may result as a function of temperature, pH, flocculation, concentration effects, and mixing. The interpretative view is based on the principle that the food rheologist will produce a graph, for example of viscosity or gelation profiling, and then have to extract a practical meaning from it. For example, if viscosity falls with time as a function of pH, this knowledge can be used to tell the customer that the viscosity can be followed with just a pH meter and a stopwatch. Rheological measurements have shown that once the pH has dropped 1 unit after 10 minutes, the viscosity has been halved. This is the type of practical and valuable information for customers of the industrial food rheologist which the book will enable readers to access.
