Jan Harkopf Investment Criteria for Mutual Fund Selection

The importance of mutual funds for individual investors has increased in recent decades. This becomes apparent when looking at the increased share of households owning mutual funds. These mutual fund investors usually want to receive a return which is above or at least close to the mutual fund's benchmark. Consequently, investors want to invest in those funds which will show these patterns in the future. Some of these mutual funds receive much attention, since they generate extraordinary high performance. But the question that remains is whether it is possible to predict such performance before funds exhibit such outstanding performance. In the past, mutual fund investors focused extensively on performance or performance linked patterns, like the Morningstar star rating, and thus chased past performance. This seems surprising since performance persists only over a short time and is more persistent to weak mutual funds (1 and 2 star rated) than well performing mutual funds. Thus, chasing past performances seems to be a rather inferior strategy. Therefore, investors should try to identify alternative tools showing a high correlation to future mutual fund performance. In this book, mutual funds are analysed, especially open-end mutual funds and actively managed mutual funds. The main focus is on what purpose and usefulness active investments have and whether performance is persistent and what the determinants of mutual fund flows are. Moreover, some alternative measures will b...

Christoph Schneider How Useful is the Information Ratio to Evaluate the Performance of Portfolio Managers.

The idea of comparing the performance of different risky investments, for example investment funds, on a quantitative basis dates back to the beginnings of the asset management industry and has been an important field of research in finance since then. Performance measures serve as valuable quantitative evidence for the portfolio manager's performance as well as for the evaluation of investment decisions ex post. Based on the idea of the capital asset pricing model proposed by Treynor, Sharpe and Lintner, Treynor developed the first quantitative performance measure intended to rate mutual funds, the Treynor Ratio. Since then, a large number of performance measures with very different characteristics have been developed. In addition to their power of rating investments ex post, their ability to predict future performance has been thoroughly analyzed by Grinblatt & Titman, Brown & Goetzmann, Carhart and others. Besides academia, the driving force behind the development of more sophisticated performance measures has always been the investors. This is understandable, as "the truly poor managers are afraid, the unlucky managers will be unjustly condemned, and the new managers have no track record. Only the skilled (or lucky) managers are enthusiastic".By combining and applying the results of previous research to a new sample of nearly 10,000 mutual funds that invest in different countries and asset classes, this thesis clarifies its central research question: I...

Eva Maria Kreibohm The Performance of Socially Responsible Investment Funds in Europe

Socially responsible investing (SRI) is an investment approach that combines investors' financial as well as nonfinancial goals in the security selection process. Technically, investors can engage in SRI either by directly investing in companies that implement corporate social activities or by investing their money in SRI funds, which apply screening criteria to select securities. The screening process applied by the SRI funds has led to controversy among academics regarding whether the use of SRI screens in the security selection process influences the financial performance of the funds. The empirical study analyzes whether or not the screening process applied by such funds influences their financial performance. Previous research mostly has focused on analyzing the performance of SRI equity funds established in the United States. The study at hand not only includes SRI equity funds, but also SRI balanced and fixed income funds established in Europe, the biggest market for SRI globally. The study provides unexpected results that are not only of interest for investors, who want to get a better understanding of the effect on the financial performance of their portfolios in case SRI funds are added. The results are also relevant for SRI fund managers, who are interested in promoting their funds and attracting (new) investors, and for academics, whose research interests are e. g., located in the fields of SRI, fund portfolio performances and market efficiencies.

Therefore, funds investing in small companies in Germany are tested on their ability to deliver risk-adjusted abnormal returns. The returns are risk-adjusted according to Fama French (1996) three-factor model, Carhart four-factor model and the liquidity adjusted five-factor model of Pastor and Stambaugh (2003). A separate examination of the internet crisis 2000 until 2003 and the financial crisis period 2008 until 2013 is done, to assess the ability of fund managers in isolation to examine their results in situations when their skills are most needed. On average, I conclude that fund managers, investing in the small capitalization segment in Germany, are not able to outperform the market even before fees.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: A, University of Cumbria (Robert Kennedy College), language: English, abstract: The popularity of funds that replicate a market performance continue to surge and several literatures have documented the superiority of index funds outperforming their active fund management counterparts. Most of these studies have been based on data from developed, emerging and frontier economies including the USA, Britain, France, Japan, India and many other countries. This study joins the debate by analysing Ghana specific data to measure the performance of Ghanaian fund managers from 2006 to 2013. This is the first of such analysis in the Ghanaian context. Using aggregate average returns, Sharpe ratio and Jensen's Alpha based on the Capital Asset Pricing Module (CAPM) as the key performance indices, the study finds that fund managers in Ghana by aggregation do not provide superior returns using the GSE composite index as the market return benchmark and that fund managers on average have underperformed the market during the period of study. The aggregate of their performance further worsen on a risk adjusted returns after factoring in fund managers cost. This notwithstanding, some fund managers on a risk adjusted average return basis outperformed the market return albeit funds with an asset allocation portfolio of not less than 60% equity. Although the Ghanaian econo...

Lennart Berger A comparison of the determinants of fund flows for conventional and sustainable funds

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1.3, University of Frankfurt (Main), language: English, abstract: This bachelor thesis investigates different determinants for absolute and relative fund flows in socially responsible investment (SRI) funds and conventional funds on the German Market. My multivariate analyses study the flow performance relationship, but also incorporate persistence in flows, expenses and typical fund characteristics such as age, total net assets and number of share classes. I find a high dependency of flows on prior returns from funds known as a return chasing behaviour. My model shows different flow-performance relations depending on the kind of sustainability fund and how the perception of investors changed over time towards being more sensitive regarding SRI criteria. Most importantly there exists a strong momentum effect for funds shown with persistent flows in Germany over different periods of time.

Saikumar Ch Bharamappanavara The Performance Of Microcredit Organisations. A Comparative Perspective

Self-Help Group (SHG) microcredit is emerging as a springboard of developmental finance for Income Generating Activities (IGAs) in rural areas of India, serving the cause of the landless, small, and marginal households. SHG peer pressure is the primary driver of impressive repayment performance. Present field research in India reveals that homogeneity of SHG members and freedom of participation in SHG deliberations are primarily responsible for strengthening collective action. Specifically, the savings and loan per capita, satisfactory performance of organisation, awareness of SHG linkage, the family size, and age-induced responsibility were found to strongly influence the economic performance of SHGs. These are the key drivers of sustainability of SHGs for their welfare. Using empirical evidence, Saikumar C. Bharamappanavara demonstrates the emergence of prime factors determining the performance of SHGs in India by examining their organisational behaviour and recommends appropriate policies for social cloning.

Recently, however, consultants and international investors have started pressuring business houses to reduce diversification.Focusing on India's most diversified conglomerate and a benchmark portfolio of unaffiliated Indian firms, this study examines the impact of Tata Group affiliation on firm performance. Results show a significant positive relation between group membership and performance, both in terms of Tobin's q and ROA. Differentiating between different degrees of group affiliation(DOA), the analysis further reveals that the higher the influence from the centre, the higher the positive impact on firm performance. From all analyzed DOA factors, the inclusion of senior group level executives or Tata family members in the management of affiliates seems to boostaffiliates' performance the most. A possible interpretation of this finding is that direct managerial involvement from the centre increases firms' access to group level resources. Furthermore, group level executives are matured professionals and leaders, who bring in valuable businessknowledge, thereby increasing the long-term prospects of the affiliate ...
