Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, grade: 4.8, University of Colombo (UNICA), language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to illustrate some of the effects of negative emotional traits in the teaching performance of two English seven and eight grade teachers with forty students each in a public school in Suba, Bogotá. The work focused on three negative emotional traits (frustration, anxiety and lack of creativity) that are the core of a negative class environment. The research of Ferguson, Frost& Hall (2012) explores some of the physical effects such as increased blood pressure, anger, headaches, and some psychological effects such as anxiety, nervousness, tension, frustration and panic, that some teachers might experience when they are exposed to situations of high amount of stress. Furthermore, those effects can affect teacher performance when teaching classes. Two case studies described the situations that affect teachers' performance, how teachers reacted when experiencing those situations and what the outcomes are in the classroom environment. The main situations found during the study are related with students' behavior, students' attitude about class activities, school demands regarding class structure and the amount of English use during classes.

The pollen morphological descriptions and illustrations are available for use in palynological investigations and plant taxonomic studies. Since many of the palynological studies are based on the detailed knowledge of the pollen morphology, in this study the pollen morphology of some of the members of the family Rosaceae and Polygonaceae was examined. We hope this study will contribute to the preparation of pollen atlas of Darjeeling Hills, India. Pollen grains belonging to these species were examined with light Photomicroscope (LM) as well as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) (for some species of Rosaceae) as regards some morphological features, principally: pollen shape; size; aperture characters; sculpture and structure of the exine. This study provides some insight into the features useful for pollen identification and problems that may be encountered when differentiating pollen of related taxa. Since last few decades, morpho-systamatic studies have contributed to the evaluation of many taxonomomic systems. This approach of the different species and genus under the family would be needed to evaluate the classification of Rosaceae and Polygonaceae proposed by various authors.

The first thorough review of cyclooxygenase inhibitors, including their toxicity mechanisms and toxicopathological risks Cyclooxygenases (COXs) are enzymes responsible for the formation of an important class of biological mediators called prostanoids. Prostanoids such as prostaglandins mediate inflammatory and anaphylactic reactions. For those suffering from inflammation and pain, the pharmacological inhibition of COXs, with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, can provide relief. Yet the use of NSAIDs can trigger toxicological effects as well, leading to potential health risks. Comparative Pathophysiology and Toxicology of Cyclooxygenases provides a comprehensive overview of how COX inhibitors affect various bodily systems, specifically the toxicity mechanisms triggered when the COX enzyme is inhibited. The book provides an introduction to the discovery of cyclooxygenases, their use as therapeutic agents, as well as an historical perspective. Shedding light on the differences in expression, pathophysiology, and toxicology of COX inhibitors across species, the book offers a systematic examination of the effects and pathophysiology of COX inhibitors and their mechanisms of toxicity, beginning with the GI tract. Subsequent chapters cover: The pathophysiology of COX inhibition on bone, tendon, and ligament healing COX inhibitors and renal system pathophysiology and mechanisms of toxicity The pathophysiologic role of COX inhibition in the ocular system COX inhibition and the respiratory and cardiovascular systems The book also sheds light on the latest research devoted to developing COX inhibitors with no adverse side-effects. The first book to offer a thorough comparative look at the toxicological effects of COX inhibitors throughout the body, this invaluable resource will help advance the research and development of safer and more effective COX drugs.

As life expectancy increases and population ages, the already enormous impact of neurodegeneration on society will become even larger without better prevention and treatment. Developing strategies to prevent degeneration of neurons and to promote a healthy nervous system is, thus, critical. The development of pharmacological agents that would increase production of new neurons was recently facilitated by the identification of the hormonal regulators of various steps of adult neurogenesis. The proposed book is writen by a group of top world experts involved in the study of the mechanisms of hormonal control of brain damage and repair. The effects of thyroid and steroid hormones (estrogens, androgens, progestins, gluco-mineralo-corticoids, various neurosteroids) or polypeptide hormones (CRF, urocortins, somatostastin, GH/IGF, leptin, prolactin, PACAP, erythropoetin) on neuronal survival and neurogenesis in various neurodegenerative conditions and in brain aging will be discussed in detail. The proposed book is unique because it gives a comprehensive account of the neuroprotective and neurogenic effects of steroid and polypeptide hormones. Furthermore, new pharmacological approaches for treatment of neurodegenerative conditions are presented, based on the neuroprotective and neurogenic properties of natural and synthetic hormones.

Humans are altering the composition of biological communities through a variety of activities that increase rates of species invasions and species extinctions, at all scales, from local to global. These changes in components of the Earth's biodiversity have a strong potential to alter ecosystem. Ecological experiments, observations, and theoretical developments show that ecosystem properties depend greatly on biodiversity in terms of the functional characteristics of organisms present in the ecosystem and the distribution and abundance of those organisms over space and time. Species effects act in concert with the effects of climate, resource availability, and disturbance regimes in influencing ecosystem properties. The scientific community has come to a broad consensus on many aspects of the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, including many points relevant to management of ecosystems. Further progress will require integration of knowledge about biotic and abiotic controls on ecosystem properties, how ecological communities are structured, and the forces driving species extinctions and invasions.

A newly discovered, diverse sponge fauna of early Silurian age, is described from Gotland, Sweden. This is the first Silurian sponge assemblage known from Baltica, and the only diverse Llandoverian assemblage known worldwide. The fauna includes 20 genera and 29 species, of which three genera and six species are new. Eighteen species are new to Baltica. The fauna shows strong similarities to later Silurian assemblages in Arctic Canada, but one endemic species comprises ca. 50% of the fauna. The fauna shows that lithistid sponges recovered well from the late Ordovician extinction in some areas, and became widely spread in the early Silurian. In contrast, non-lithistid sponges like, such as hexactinellids, appear to have evolved rapidly during the Late Ordovician – early Silurian interval, and some modern groups probably originated in inshore habitats.

Even today, the World Health Organization estimates that up to 80 percent of people still rely mainly on traditional medicines. In fact, many of the current drugs either mimic naturally occurring molecules or have structures that are fully or in part derived from natural motifs. Natural antimicrobials can be derived from various parts of the plant. The essential oil obtained from Ocimum sp contains various antimicrobial properties. Many Ficus species are commonly used in traditional medicine to cure various diseases. Cissus quadrangularis has been reported to include antioxidant activity. Bitter melon stimulate digestive function and improve appetite. The bio active compounds of Aloe vera are effective in treating stomach ailments, gastrointestinal problems. The leaf extracts of Achyranthus aspera were reported to posses thyroid stimulating, antiperoxidative and antifungal activity. Background: Nematodes of the family Anisakidae are parasites of marine organisms, such as fish and sea mammals, pose a threat to humans and cause the disease anisakiasis. In Australia, little has been done to evaluate the risk of exposure for consumers of infected fish to these parasites. The aim of the present study is to partially address this gap by a small-scale survey of five local fish species from southern Australia destined for consumption. Methods: Fish were collected and examined for intestinal worms, including anisakids. The parasite larvae collected were fixed and identified both by morphological/morphometric analysis and by molecular investigation of the PCR-amplified internal transcribed spacer region of nuclear ribosomal DNA. Both datasets were combined and interpreted together with other biological data. Results: Infection rates of anisakid nematodes in the respective fish species ranged between 20 % and 100 %. Larval stages of seven anisakid species of three different genera, namely Anisakis, Contracaecum and Hysterothylacium, were identified. Some species discovered represent molecularly uncharacterized specimens and await unequivocal identification. Conclusion: The data show that Anisakis and related species are prevalent in southern Australia, in some fish hosts in large numbers. Further research will provide a better understanding of the parasite and other factors linked to anisakiasis.

Although, pesticides are very useful for saving human life from many diseases and protecting food and other economically important food crops from pest damage, some pesticides are not readily biodegradable, tend to persist for a long period in the environment and move to other parts of the environment. The detrimental effects of these chemicals can be seen on organisms other than the target pests. These toxic substances exist in a variety of chemical and biological forms including organochlorines, organophosphates, carbonates, etc. Pollution of aquatic systems due to these pesticides is widespread and sometimes the pollution is on such a large scale that no fish can survive in the polluted waters. These pesticides interfere in biological and physiological processes of aquatic organisms such as fishes. Present work was hence undertaken to study the effects of five commonly used pesticides, on the vulnerable stage in the life of fish i.e. spawn of common carp as an indicator species to find out their lethal limits.

Increases of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), rising temperatures, and altered precipitation patterns will affect agricultural productivity. Increases in temperature coupled with more variable precipitation will reduce productivity of crops, and these effects will outweigh the benefits of increasing carbon dioxide. Effects will vary among annual and perennial crops, and regions of the United States; however, all production systems will be affected to some degree by climate change. Agricultural systems depend upon reliable water sources, and the pattern and potential magnitude of precipitation changes is not well understood, thus adding considerable uncertainty to assessment efforts. Livestock production systems are vulnerable to temperature stresses. Migraine is a chronic, often debilitating disease that affects 12% of the general population. The effective management of migraine involves the active treatment of acute episodes combined with non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatments for the prevention of migraine. The treatment of migraine with the reference prophylactic beta blocker propranolol (80-240mg/day) is limited by side effects and lack of tolerability. Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is the precursor of flavin mononucleotide and flavin adenine dinucleotide which are involved in mitochondrial transport chain. The use of riboflavin in migraine treatment is based on the hypothesis of a deficient mitochondrial energy reserve as a causal factor in migraine pathogenesis and on the findings of its safety and effectiveness at high doses (100-200mg/day) in the treatment of migraine like headaches in classic mitochondriopathies. Till date there have been four studies (two open trials and two randomized controlled) using high dose riboflavin (400mg/day) that suggest its safety and tolerability for preventing migraine in adults. Thus the present study though not statistically significant demonstrates that oral riboflavin 100mg/day

Monography on the species composition and ecological characteristics of insects living on one of the largest in Central Europe bogs "Yelnia" (North-West of Belarus). In the course of many years of field research, the author collected and analyzed great stuff. A specific complex of insects was recorded. It comprises an approximately small number of species with a high abundance of some of them. Many of the insects are highly specialized to the ecological conditions of the bog (tyrphobionts and tyrphphiles). These species are good indicators of any change in the specific ecological conditions of peat bogs. The insect fauna of the peat bog Yelnia is unique for the temperate zone as it includes of relict boreal, boreomontane, arctoboreal and subarctic species. From a zoogeographical viewpoint, the fauna composition of Yelnya has groups with a Holarctic or Palaearctic range. The specific composition of the peat bog Yelnia in general is close to the species of Northern, Eastern and Central Europe.

The family Drosophilidae consists over described about 4,000 species. Molecular characterization and comparison among different species of Drosophilidae (Diptera) is necessary for the study of the divergence pattern in Drosophilidae. To understand the phylogenetic relationship among the species of the family Drosophilidae, RAPD polymorphic patterns were analyzed from the species of Drosophilidae. Four random primers have been used for present study. The degree of relatedness among the species was studied by cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling and also by Jaccard similarity coefficient analysis. This book provides the molecular phylogenetic tree of the species of Drosophilidae. The phylogenetic tree, generated by RAPD analysis, is in nearly complete congruence with the classification based on morphophenotypic characters. This book also gives a clear idea about the relationship of indian Drosophilidae with the other members of this family.

Plant diversity was studied in the plantations of different species at Wondo Genet. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of overstorey species, age, and density of the different plantations on the understorey plant diversity. The plantations species were of Cupressus lusitanica, Eucalyptus grandis, Grevillea robusta and Juniperus excelsa. The age of the stands of the different species ranged between 6 and 23 years. A total of 72 plots, having 20 m x 20 m area were studied under the plantations. A total of 45 understorey plant species were recorded. There was a significant difference among the plantation stands with regards to understory plant density, diversity and number of species. The diversity and number of understory plant species were positively related with age of the plantation stands while understorey plant density was inversely related with overstory plant density and crown cover. The overstorey plantation appeared to affect the abundance of understorey plant species more than the species richness. Canopy cover was significantly associated with understorey plant density under all the plantation stands than other stand characteristics.

This book is about the impact of few selected advertisements on children. The target age groups are from 3 to 17 which would be divided into three groups. Five ages per group. Group 1: age 3 to 7, Group 2: age 8 to 12 and Group 3: age 13 to 17. Each of these age groups are affected in different ways. Some are effected mentally, and some physically. But these effects would not take effect a child immediately; it would take effect as the child grows. This is because no matter how the advertisements are made, most of the children never understand the effects on the advertisements and since they like the creativity in the advertisements they actually consume the product. No matter what the product is, let it be from a chocolate to an electronic product like an Air Conditioner.

This new edition of Invasion Ecology provides a comprehensive and updated introduction to all aspects of biological invasion by non-native species. Highlighting important research findings associated with each stage of invasion, the book provides an overview of the invasion process from transportation patterns and causes of establishment success to ecological impacts, invader management, and post-invasion evolution. The authors have produced new chapters on predicting and preventing invasion, managing and eradicating invasive species, and invasion dynamics in a changing climate. Modern global trade and travel have led to unprecedented movement of non-native species by humans with unforeseen, interesting, and occasionally devastating consequences. Increasing recognition of the problems associated with invasion has led to a rapid growth in research into the dynamics of non-native species and their adverse effects on native biota and human economies. This book provides a synthesis of this fast growing field of research and is an essential text for undergraduate and graduate students in ecology and conservation management. Scientific Study from the year 2013 in the subject Biology - Micro- and Molecular Biology, grade: A, Nirma University (Institute of Science), language: English, abstract: Increasing applications of MW radiation has led to concerns globally due to the suspected bio effects associated with its exposure. Effect of MW, thermal and/or athermal, is inconclusive, complex, and controversial in literature. Thermal effect causes thermogenic effect while athermal effects are other than heat and such effects reported as somatic effect and/or genetic effect. This study basically deals with the athermal effects and is aimed at investigating the hypothesis that the exposure of microbial cells to MW (low power) may cause athermal effect, which affect on growth of microbes, enzyme activity, and production of exopolysaccharides. Furthermore, we have also checked the effect of different intracellular enzymes on MW treated bacteria. Our study also gives information that MW athermal effects causes changes at genetic level and can be passed on to next generation. There are numerous and increasing applications of MW energy and technology in the industries, in homes, in medical, research institutions etc., and there is greater awareness and concern of the public over the suspected potential health hazards associated with such exposures [ICNIRP Guidelines, 1998]. There is therefore, a need for deeper understanding of the bio-effects of exposure to this radiation. Due to the ease of handing them in lab...

Stroke is the third most common cause of death and has profound negative social and economic effects. The failure, of various clinical trials of exogenously administered drugs as potential stroke therapy has enhanced the ongoing search to identify endogenous mechanisms activated after cerebral ischemia that might be harnessed as neuroprotectants in stroke. Postconditioning (PoCo), is an adaptive technique, whereby brief repetitive cycles of ischemia with intermittent reperfusion immediately following prolonged ischemia elicits tissue protection. Protective role of PoCo has been reported in different organs and animal species. PoCo is recently reported to produce some protective effects in clinical settings and hence it appears to hold great potential at clinical level. However usefulness of PoCo in cerebral ischemia & stroke remains to be explored so there is a need to investigate neuroprotective mechanism of PoCo. Present study investigates the role of K-channels in neuroprotective mechanism of PoCo. Delineating neuroprotective mechanism of PoCo will help in better understanding of its usefulness in ischemic stroke and boost the therapeutic management in a significant manner.
