Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Agrarian Studies, Bahir Dar University, course: animal genetics and breeding, language: English, abstract: ABSTRACTPhenotypic characterization of indigenous chicken ecotypes was conducted in North Wollo from January 2011 to May 2012 with the objectives of characterizing indigenous chicken and their production system. Simultaneously, identification of development intervention for improved utilization of chicken genetic resources was also identified. In the first part of data collection, one focused group discussion per agro-ecological zones was held. Then, administration of well-structured questionnaire and morphometric measurement were employed. Measured quantitative traits of chicken among the three altitudes were analyzed by linear model of SAS 2002 for male and female chickens separately. Subsequently, mean value of each traits were compared using Tukey's mean comparison method. Multivariate analysis of principal component analysis, canonical discriminant, step-wise discriminant and clustering analysis was performed by SPSS 19.0 for male and female chicken ecotype separately. Nechi (17.6%), Tikur (12.6%) and Key (10.8%) plumage colour were found dominantly all over the study area. Findings of the focus group discussion revealed that there were morphologically differences among chickens of high altitude, mid altitude and low altitude study areas. Similarly, findings from the semi-structured questioner revealed that i...

The distribution and density of birds vary from place to place. Local chickens, which are not properly characterized, have been found to vary widely in body size conformation, plumage colour and other phenotypic characteristics (Mogesse, 2007). The productivity of indigenous birds under the rural production systems has been reported to be very low (Teketel, 1986). This low productivity may be attributed to lack of improved poultry breeds, the presence of predators, the incidence of chicken diseases, poor feeding and management factors(Alemu, 1995; Alemu and Tadelle, 1997). Hence, the FAO of the United Nations has proposed an integrated programme for the global management of genetic resources on an international level. This is being developed by FAO, with the main objective of assisting countries by providing extensive searchable databases and guidelines for better characterization, utilization and conservation of animal genetic resources. Accordingly, this study sought to unearth the variation among local chickens in other part of the country in terms of feather distribution and structure, the presence of genes responsible for such variation and other morphological features.

In Ethiopia, the agricultural sector is a corner stone of the economic and social life of the people. The livestock sector in Ethiopia contributes 12% and 33% of the total and agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP), respectively, and provides livelihood for 65% of the population. The sector also accounts for 12-15% of the total export earnings. These livestock genetic resources are important or vital to development of the economic ,social and environmental of the one country. The diverse agro-ecology and agronomic practice prevailing in the country together with the huge population of livestock in general and poultry in particular, could be a promising attribute to boost up the sector and increase its contribution to the total agricultural output as well as to improve the living standards of the poor livestock keepers. Poultry production, as one segment of livestock production, has a peculiar privilege to...

The Sermon on the Mount contains many comparisons. In this book, the functions of these comparisons are studied by the methodology called comparative characterization. Characterization is the way a character is characterized in a narrative. Comparative characterization is the characterization of a character using comparisons. In comparative characterization, another character is used as a foil to bring out a characteristic trait of a concerned character. Jesus characterized the ideal disciple in the Sermon on the Mount with many descriptions and imperatives. To characterize the ideal disciple Jesus used many comparisons and highlighted the characteristic features that embody the ideal disciple. The many comparisons used in the Sermon on the Mount are identified in this study through comparative characterization. In addition, the teleological purpose of the comparisons, which is to play as foil to the characterization of the ideal disciple, is identified and highlighted. Thus, this study identifies Jesus' characterization of the ideal disciple and his complex portrayal of the ideal disciple with the many uses of comparisons in the descriptions and imperatives of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.""Bennet Arren Lawrence uses literary, narrative, and comparative characterization methods at their best in his analysis of the Sermon on the Mount. Latin America's Indigenous writers have long labored under the limits of colonialism, but in the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries, they have constructed a literary corpus that moves them beyond those parameters. Gloria E. Chacon considers the growing number of contemporary Indigenous writers who turn to Maya and Zapotec languages alongside Spanish translations of their work to challenge the tyranny of monolingualism and cultural homogeneity. Chacon argues that these Maya and Zapotec authors reconstruct an Indigenous literary tradition rooted in an Indigenous cosmolectics, a philosophy originally grounded in pre-Columbian sacred conceptions of the cosmos, time, and place, and now expressed in creative writings. More specifically, she attends to Maya and Zapotec literary and cultural forms by theorizing kab'awil as an Indigenous philosophy. Tackling the political and literary implications of this work, Chacon argues that Indigenous writers' use of familiar genres alongside Indigenous language, use of oral traditions, and new representations of selfhood and nation all create space for expressions of cultural and political autonomy. Chacon recognizes that Indigenous writers draw from universal literary strategies but nevertheless argues that this literature is a vital center for reflecting on Indigenous ways of knowing and is a key artistic expression of decolonization.

Indigenous people are often denied the right to representation, and this has important implications for sustainable development. This book explores how Australian government practice and discourse frame representations of Martu people, one of the last Indigenous tribes in Australia to come into contact with settler society. The context of the case study is the Western Desert of Western Australia, and spans a number of Martu settlements. The research was action orientated and involved the use of participatory techniques. Two major themes are outlined: power and representation; and the framing of Martu culture. Conclusions emphasise the value of Indigenous relational worldviews, Indigenous autonomy, the negotiation of representative structures and the surfacing of ideologies through deliberative politics. This book emphasises the importance of these for the process of sustainable development.

This book examines the nature of indigenous knowledge portrayed in Shona traditional games and how it can be used towards child development. Foreign influence apparently made many people to despise African cultures in general, hence the need to prove that African indigenous knowledge, as is seen in Shona indigenous games, is useful. Some indigenous knowledge has continued to exist in its original form while some has vanished or changed with time. There are several clusters of knowledge that can either be scientific, modern or indigenous. Indigenous knowledge refers to local knowledge existing within and developed around the specific conditions of individuals, indigenous to a particular geographical location and passed on to the next generation through oral tradition. The first section of the book deals with indigenous knowledge and a general overview of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. The second, third and fourth sections of this book deal with the nature and structure of African games and their contribution towards child development. Selected Shona traditional musical and non musical games are presented for analysis.

The introduction and eight chapters in English and Spanish that make up "Teorizando las literaturas indígenas contemporáneas" examine the textual production of indigenous authorship. The authors start from the nineties and problematize the relationship between Indigenous People and nation-state in Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, and Brazil. It is one of the book's suggestions that current indigenous movements and their demands can be best understood through a critique of textual production of its organic intellectuals. While much has been written about the activities of the social movements and current indigenous textual production, there is still the need for a book that contextualizes what has enabled the emergence of a contemporary indigenous literary canon and its relationship to those social movements. This book aims to fill some of these gaps.

Techno-Anthropological approach has been formulated in researching a traditional settlement of Bhaktapur City, Nepal. The practices of indigenous people have been analyzed by juxtaposing the science along with the indigenous technology. It has been significantly concluded that, the impetus behind the city sustainability is primarily the indigenous knowledge and sometimes this knowledge is overwhelming to even the modern scientific aspects too. Indigenous technology of water management in the historic city of Bhaktapur has been also found to be significant not only in terms of supply rather in terms of quality of water too. The reusability of water resources has given an excellent paradigm even to the modern approaches too. The lifestyle in terms of culture and religion has been associated with water for this city, and water management is also facilitated through cultural practices and religious establishments. A city regarded as 'City of Devotees' has disseminated a remarkable approach for the water management by keeping aside the modern scientific approaches. The city was established in the 13th century and practices are continuously adopted since then as indigenous practices through unrelenting trial and error, the indigenous technology of water management has been found to be rational hence revitalization of some components might be more energy efficient and economic for present day water scarcity solution in the city

VOLUME 3 IN THE AMERICAN INDIAN AND POLICY SERIESA critical evaluation of a new era in American Indian policyOver the past twenty years, American Indian policy has shifted from self-determination to "forced federalism," as indigenous nations in the United States have encountered new threats from state and local governments over such issues as taxation, gaming, and homeland security. During the forced federalism era (1988-present), public perceptions of indigenous peoples as "rich Indians" have been just as damaging to Native nations as anti-sovereignty legislation. This book examines how state governments have manipulated "rich Indian" images when setting policies targeting indigenous peoples and discusses how indigenous nations have responded politically to these contemporary threats to their nationhood. Drawing on original survey data collected from Native governments from 1994 to 2000 and on interviews with Chief Chad Smith of the Cherokee Nation as well as other indigenous leaders, Jeff Corntassel and Richard C. Witmer II examine the power dynamics of the indigenous-state compacting system, and show how electoral activism among indigenous peoples has increased their political power while also giving rise to "rich Indian racism" among non-Indians-especially in the wake of the Indian Gaming and Regulatory Act.The authors warn that current widespread Native participation in non-Native politics is undermining both the political and the cultural...

Media can be a source of information and knowledge of indigenousness for indigenous peoples from generation to generation. It is possible only if representatives from indigenous communities are emphasized to participate in media. Secondly, the media professionals from indigenous communities should not be influenced by majority mechanisms. Hence, indigenous participation and their executive power in media are vital for empowerment. There is a universal quotation- 'voices are heard when they are spoken'. Indigenous peoples should speak themselves to make their voices to hear. Basically, community FM radios have common purpose of inclusive participation to bring the 'voice of the voiceless' on air. I have focused this research on evaluating the implementation of cited goals of those community FM radios in a district (Kavrepalanchowk) of Nepal.

Despite the recent promotion, development and sustenance bids of several artists, scholars and concerned authorities, the teeming Nigerian masses are yet to be roused towards and properly educated, sensitised and re-oriented on and towards indigenous music. It is against the above backdrop that this study has emerged to call for a change in these regards. The paper maintains that it is imperative to properly, constantly and adequately promote, develop and sustain our indigenous music so as to project our indigenous music, create a place for it in the globalised Western hostile village, and allow for culture continuity and national development. Music unites people(s) and allows for the showcasing of cultural identity, ethos and aesthetics. Therefore, to duly tap from the potentials/prospects of indigenous music, it is imperative to incessantly promote, develop and sustain indigenous music in Nigeria and beyond. This study is anchored on music and indigenous wholistic theories that are most suitable for it, following its nature and pursuit. It relied o...

When researchers want to study indigenous populations they are dependent upon the highly variable way in which states or territories enumerate, categorise and differentiate indigenous people. In this volume, anthropologists, historians, demographers and sociologists have come together for the first time to examine the historical and contemporary construct of indigenous people in a number of fascinating geographical contexts around the world, including Canada, the United States, Colombia, Russia, Scandinavia, the Balkans and Australia. Using historical and demographical evidence, the contributors explore the creation and validity of categories for enumerating indigenous populations, the use and misuse of ethnic markers, micro-demographic investigations, and demographic databases, and thereby show how the situation varies substantially between countries.Per Axelsson is a Senior Researcher of the Centre for Sami Research at Umeå University, Sweden. His research interests and recent publications focus on indigenous demography, the medical history and historical demography of the Sami and the settlers in northern Sweden during the time of colonization and also the history of polio during the twentieth century. He co-chairs the network of Family/Demography within the European Social Science History Association.Peter Sköld is Professor of History at Umeå University and Director of the Centre for Sami Research. The exploration and development of natural resources of sovereign states is often carried out by multinational oil companies or in most cases in conjunction with the host state. At the start of the exploration period, it may be impracticable to relocate the indigenous peoples living in communities where explorations are carried out. However, these people live to witness different negative impacts as a result of the activities and operations of the companies. This has heralded a difficult relationship between several indigenous peoples and multinational oil corporations in different countries. This book, therefore, uses a case study of two selected indigenous peoples in both Nigeria and Peru to provide new ways of applying corporate social responsibility to bring an exciting relationship

It is small headed and comparatively small body sized (mature females 150-200 kg and males 300-350 kg) but physical condition is very strong and stout. But this type of indigenous cattle are under the thread of extinction due to crossing with foreign breeds during last few decades for enhancing their milk and meat production, although fertility & reproductive efficiency are not satisfactory. Animal scientists are recently giving more value for the conservation of indigenous animal genetic resources globally; therefore, RCC could be such type of genetic resource in Bangladesh. This book will help reader to develop breeding methodology for sustainable development of valuable indigenous cattle genetic resources in the tropics.

This is the first volume devoted specifically to the revitalisation of ancestral Indigenous singing practices in Australia. These traditions are at severe risk in many parts of Australia, and this work investigates the geographical, theoretical and methodological strategies currently being implemented to reverse the damage. In some areas the ancestral musical culture is still transmitted across the generations; in others it is partially remembered, and being revitalised with the assistance of heritage recordings and written documentation; but in many parts of Australia, the transmission of songs has been interrupted, and in those places revitalisation relies on research and restoration. This book provides helpful insights for Indigenous people and communities, researchers and educators and anyone interested in song and Indigenous Australia.

As gambling has increasingly expanded worldwide, Indigenous people, like others, have taken up commercial gambling. Additionally, gambling is an integral part of some Indigenous cultures and in Australia card gambling is known as a traditional exchange and recreation activity. Very limited academic literature is available to explain Indigenous Australian commercial and card gambling motivations, behaviours and outcomes, in particular, risk and protective factors. Medical analyses of gambling are no longer adequate for population groups. This book explains gambling by Indigenous Australians in north Queensland using more recent models based on public health principles to analyse risk factors, those associated with a high probability of adverse gambling outcomes and protective factors, those that assist gamblers to make decisions that protect them from harmful outcomes. This analysis should be very helpful in revealing evidence-based information useful for Indigenous Australian health and wellbeing services, public health professionals and gambling help agencies for informing the development of culturally appropriate resources for assisting Indigenous people with their gambling.

It is well written and engaging . . . It is scrupulously balanced, strives to be complete, and is consistently well argued." · Patrick Sullivan, University of Notre Dame"This book breaks new ground in the study of postcolonial identity politics. This book explores what happens when well-meaning people, supported by the state, attempt to help without harming. 'White anti-racists' find themselves trapped by endless ambiguities, contradictions, and double binds - a microcosm of the broader dilemmas of postcolonial societies. These dilemmas are fueled by tension between the twin desires of equality and difference: to make Indigenous people statistically the same as non-Indigenous people (to 'close the gap') while simultaneously maintaining their 'cultural' distinctiveness. This tension lies at the heart of failed development efforts in Indigenous communities, ethnic minority populatio...

This book on Nanai shamanic culture is based on first-hand information provided by shamans and recorded in the years between 1980 and 2012, a time of rapid socio-cultural change in Russia. It sheds light on the lively indigenous discourse in which social factors such as the splitting of society into different paternal lineages relates to spiritual troubles that Nanai people experience as collective 'shamanic disease.' But inter-clan confrontations are not only mediated in shamanic rituals, as these must not be separated from folk narratives, dances and other forms of art. Furthermore, the book provides profound insights into the plurality of contradictory discourses on indigenous knowledge as well as those delivered in non-indigenous contexts. The latter arose or became more intense in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods, and often led to experiments in new shamanic practices.

The coming of Colonization and Christianity to Africa and other indigenous cross-cultural contexts was a ""mixed bag"" of pros and cons. The impact of the advent of the two has had a lasting effect being felt even today. It created issues of bi-culturalism and bi-religiousness in personal and religious identities that counselors and the church need to address when working with people from these contexts. There is the existence of deep cultural trauma (including psychological and spiritual scars) needing healing for those living in most of these post-colonial contexts. The Western counseling approaches and Christian rituals need contextualization. A counselor or pastoral caregiver with an integrative consciousness is required to address the psychological and religious identity conflicts existing in African and other indigenous cross-cultural contexts.""Mucherera has identified counseling and pastoral care issues within the African Shona and other indigenous contexts with which individuals and families are struggling after generations of the advent of Christianity and colonization. His analysis of the impact of colonization and Christianity in post-colonial indigenous contexts is one of the best I have read. . . . In his book, Mucherera offers clear guidelines for counselors and pastors struggling with, and needing insight in, providing counseling and care. A must read for those serving individuals and families from and/or in post-colonial indigenous con...
