Banana is perishable in nature, so it can not be stored for a longer period at ambient temperature. For good market price it requires that fruit must be transported to the distant market without spoilage. A few main challenges faced by fruit industry are the enormous post-harvest losses, lack of information on handling, packaging system and post-harvest treatments. Attempts have been made to retard ripening and delay the senescence of fresh fruits by means of post-harvest treatments with senescence inhibiting chemicals and shelf-life has been reported to be extended. It is hoped that finding of this investigation will provide the basic as well as applied information and it will be a great help to research workers, banana growers and traders for better handling and reducing the post harvest losses in transportation of banana. Keeping this view in mind, a distance market oriented research (the present study) is undertaken to investigate the possibilities of extending shelf life of banana fruits CV. 'Robusta' in ambient conditions with and without packaging.

International trade in high value perishables has grown enormously in the past few decades. In the developed world consumers now expect to be able to eat perishable produce from all parts of the world, and in most cases throughout the year. Perishable plant products are, however, susceptible to physical damage and often have a potential storage life of only a few days. Given their key importance in the world economy, Crop Post-Harvest Science and Technology: Perishables devotes itself to perishable produce, providing current and comprehensive knowledge on all the key factors affecting post-harvest quality of fruits and vegetables. This volume focuses explicitly on the effects and causes of deterioration, as well as the many techniques and practices implemented to maintain quality though correct handling and storage. As highlighted throughout, regular losses caused by post-harvest spoilage of perishable products can be as much as 50%. A complete understanding, as provided by this excellent volume, is therefore vital in helping to reduce these losses by a significant percentage. Compiled by members of the world-renowned Natural Resources Institute at the United Kingdom's University of Greenwich, with contributions from experts around the world, this volume is an essential reference for all those working in the area. Researchers and upper-level students in food science, food technology, post-harvest science and technology, crop protection, applied biology and plant and agricultural sciences will benefit from this landmark publication. Libraries in all research establishments and universities where these subjects are studied and taught should ensure that they have several copies for their shelves.

Sapota [Manilkara achras (Mill.) Fosberg] is a tropical fruit crop grown for its delicious and sweet fruits. India is considered to be the largest producer of the sapota in the world. Sapota is highly perishable in nature and cannot be stored at ambient temperature for longer period. Therefore, fruit need to be disposed off as early as possible after harvest. Thus the Inadequate post harvest management practices and poor shelf life lead to enormous losses. It is therefore necessary to convert the sapota fruit in to processed products to avoid post harvest losses and get value added product. However, in recent years the increasing consumer awareness has emphasized the need for functional beverages which provide a health benefit beyond energy and essential nutrients. Therefore, such product will also help to generate employment opportunities

German agri-food businesses are facing a changing business environment. New developments at the national and international level present challenges and opportunities for German agri-food supply chain businesses, from farmers to retailers. One way to deal with these challenges and exploit the opportunities is to improve the quality and the stability, i. e. the sustainability, of supply chain relationships among farmers, processors, and retailers. To appreciate the role of business relationships and communication in German agri-food systems, a thorough understanding of governance structures and the sustainability of business relationships, as well as the key driving forces behind them, is necessary. However, extensive research on governance structures and the sustainability of vertical business-to-business (B2B) relationships in the German agri-food sector has been scarce so far. Against this background, the main objective of this study is to generate implications for the development of improved B2B relationships. This is pursued by exploring the reasons for adopting more collaborative and formal governance structures and the determinants of sustainable business relationships in selected agri-food chains. This study encompasses a theoretical approach, a secondary research of national statistics, expert interviews, and a survey of farmers, processors, and retailers.

Fisheries have been playing a vital role in the socio-economic development of Bangladesh from time immemorial. The country showed a very impressive growth in shrimp and fish processing industry in terms of foreign exchange earnings over last few years. For entering the major export market of Europe and North America with a safe and sound food product, complying HACCP, a worldwide recognized food safety standard, is obligatory. Although, remarkable improvements in infrastructural and quality management facilities have been undertaken at processing plants, post-harvest losses of prawn have been reported at grass root level. Giant freshwater prawn (M. rosenbergii) is considered one of the most important aquaculture products of Bangladesh for its palatability and consumer demand. The study was carried out to evaluate the level of HACCP implementation in prawn farms under Mymensingh region. Thorough investigation on overall condition of prawn farms, various water quality parameters, quality of feeds used, post harvest handling and preservation practices were made. This book, therefore, should be helpful for academicians, researchers and policy makers working on food safety issues.

Ratna variety of mango had maximum large size fruits. Due to the overall appearance, colour and sugar acid blend of Ratna variety, it may get high price in international market. Harvesting with proper maturity (specific gravity more than 1.00) affects post harvest life of fruit. CFB boxes followed by CTHT box were successfully helped to increase the shelf life and quality of fruits. Attractive packaging and careful handling is necessary to reduce the post harvest losses. Pre-cooling by the method by hydro-cooling increased significantly the shelf life of mango fruits without affecting the quality of fruit.Low temperature storage helped to increase the availability of fruits. But chemical changes in fruits were very slow, which reduces its ripening and overall fruit quality. The products prepared from raw and ripe mango fruits revealed good at preparation and throughout the storage period of six months. On the basis of their organoleptic evaluation, it is noticed that they retained their conditions and acceptability during storage period of six months at ambient temperature condition, so there is a scope for processing of Ratna variety.

The agrifood supply chain of perishable products is affected by environmental abuses from harvest to the final destination responsible for the uncontrolled deterioration of food. The factor mainly influencing the food quality is the temperature able to inhibit or stimulate deterioration processes. The present work shows that the temperature monitoring through innovative and non-invasive technologies can ameliorate the decision making process thus improving the efficiency/responsiveness of the supply chain. The suitability of such an approach is evaluated by monitoring food quality during pre and post harvest stages. In the pre-harvest stage innovative technologies joined to growth models lead to the determination of ripeness date. In the post-harvest they allow to monitor the remaining quality at any stage of the supply chain allowing the proper delivering of products in markets where they are still suitable for selling. Finally the topic of the implementation costs of the innovative technologies is tackled. The work is addressed to the supply chain members supporting them to take decisions in the context of agrifood supply chain encouraging the use of innovative technologies.

Active packaging is an emerging technology which follows MAP principle in a cost effective way. In active packaging, the packaging systems actively interact with the packaged food or with the food surface, to extend the shelf life and to improve the quality of the products, preserving their sensorial characteristics and safety along the storage period. This book focuses on the effects of the active packaging components (Ethylene, Moisture and Carbon Dioxide scavengers) on the physico-chemical, textural and sensory properties of banana (Musa spp.). Detailed experimentation on shelf life extension of highly perishable fruits like banana by using active packaging technology has been mentioned in this book. Also, measurement of respiration rate, quantification of each of the three scavengers used, and effect of temperature on the active packaging system have been evaluated. In a nutshell, this book provides all the necessary informations for minimising the post harvest loss of any fruit/ vegetable.

A bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is among the most common crops grown for food security in Uganda and the entire world. Despite this significant role played by the beans in people’s diet and economy, the beans can not be stored for long after harvest due to damage by storage pests. As such, beans cannot be available through out the year. It is envisaged that if these pests were controlled, the beans would be available for use as food through out the year. Also farmers would store them for long after harvest thus attracting good prices for their produce. The bean bruchid (Acanthoscelides obtectus Say) is one of the major storage pests that disturb beans in store and cause big and considerable losses. This research was aimed at finding out the most effective biorational that farmers can use to avoid the bruchids in the stored beans and more over biorationals are locally available, cheap and environmentally friendly. In this study biorationals (Tephrosia vogelii, Tagetes minuta, and cow dung ash) tested against Malathion 2% dust with the aim of determining their efficacy on bean bruchids.

Cereal and pulse crops are staple foods that provide essential nutrients to many populations of the world. Traditionally, whole grains were consumed but most current foods are derived from refined fractions of cereal and pulse crops. Consumption of processed or refined products may reduce the health benefits of food. In wheat-based processed foods, for example, the removed 40% of the grain (mainly the bran and the germ of the wheat grain) contains the majority of the health beneficial components. These components, particularly non-essential phytochemicals such as carotenoids, polyphenols, phytosterols/ stanols, and dietary fibers, have been shown to reduce the risk of major chronic diseases of humans, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and Parkinson’s disease. Such bioactives are therefore good candidates for ingredients of nutraceuticals and functional foods. There are many factors that can affect the bioactive content of cereal and pulse-based food ingredients, including genetics, growing and storage conditions, post-harvest treatments, food formulation and processing. All of these factors ultimately affect human health and wellness. Bioavailability is also important for these compounds for exerting their protective roles. Cereals and Pulses: Nutraceutical Properties and Health Benefits provides a summary of current research findings related to phytochemical composition and properties of cereal and pulse crops. The nutraceutical properties of each major cereal and pulse are discussed. Coverage of cereals and pulse crops includes barley, oats, rice, rye, corn, adlay, wheat, buckwheat, psyllium, sorghum, millet, common beans, field peas, faba beans, chickpea, lentil and soybeans. Chapters for each crop discuss methods to improve crop utilization, nutraceutical components and properties, bioactive compositions, antioxidant properties, beneficial health effects, disease prevention activities, and areas for future research. Also included are two chapters that examine the beneficial health properties of dietary fibers and antioxidants. Edited and written by an international team of respected researchers, this book is a reference guide for scientists working in food ingredients, food product research and development, functional foods and nutraceuticals, crop breeding and genetics, human nutrition, post-harvest treatment and processing of cereal grains and pulses. It will enable them to effect value-added food innovation for health promotion and disease risk reduction.
