As the result of this disturbance there were two blackouts. In first blackout only the Northern Grid was affected but in the second blackout Northern, Eastern and North-Eastern grid collapsed. A committee formed by the government analyzed the events that resulted in the collapse of system and pointed out no of factors that lead to disturbance.Whole grid collapsed under load encroachment condition. In this thesis different factors have been analyzed using PSCAD simulation and solutions have been proposed.Approximate model of Indian power system has been developed in PSCAD using approximate parameters given in Grid Failure Report issued by the Indian government. Increase in installed capacity of power system and its impact on system frequency and rotor angle has been studied. A new algorithm has been proposed for distance relay operation in Zone 3 to avoid power system blackout using Indian grid model. One of the main factors that lead to the collapse of whole system was the operation of zone 3 distance relay on 400kV Bina-Gwalior Line. This scheme will improve system stability under heavy load conditions. A simplified model in PSCAD was established in order to study the zone 3 protection of distance relay.

The main objective of this project is to design a inductive power transfer system by using ac –ac converter. This paper proposes to generate a high-frequency current for inductive power-transfer (IPT) systems. In this work, performances of Fixed Capacitor Thyristor Controlled Reactor, Static Synchronous Compensator, Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor, Static Synchronous Series Compensator, Interline Power Flow Controller and Unified Power Flow Controller for power system stability enhancement and improvement of power transfer capability is analyzed. Behavior of a transmission system upon the addition of compensating devices is also studied. The changes in the behavior of the compensators for a change in their parameter values are then obtained and the best rating of compensators to deliver optimum results is found out. The simulation results demonstrate the improvement in the performance of the system for each of the above FACTS controller in terms of power profile and voltage stability. The results are then compared to determine the best controller for a given operating condition.

The global warming phenomenon as a significant sustainability issue is gaining worldwide support for development of renewable energy technologies. The term “polygeneration” is referred to as “an energy supply system, which delivers more than one form of energy to the final user.” For example, electricity, cooling and desalination can be delivered from a polygeneration process. The polygeneration process in a hybrid solar thermal power plant can deliver electricity with less impact on the environment compared to a conventional fossil fuel-based power generating system. It is also THE next generation energy production technique with the potential to overcome the undesirable intermittence of renewable energy systems. In this study, the polygeneration process simultaneous production of power, vapor absorption refrigeration (VAR) cooling and multi-effect humidification and dehumidification (MEHD) desalination system from different heat sources in hybrid solar-biomass (HSB) system with higher energy efficiencies (energy and exergy), primary energy savings (PES) and payback period are investigated, focusing on several aspects associated with hybrid solar-biomass power generation installations, such as wide availability of biomass resources and solar direct normal irradiance (DNI), and other technologies. Thermodynamic evaluation (energy and exergy) of HSB power has also been investigated, along with the VAR cooling system, the modelling, simulation, optimization and cost analysis of the polygeneration hybrid solar biomass system, all accompanied by multiple case studies and examples for practical applications. This volume provides the researcher, student and engineer with the intellectual tool needed for understanding new ideas in this rapidly emerging field. In this book shows a novel control approach of a three phase grid connected wind energy conversion system, incorporating a maximum power point tracker for dynamic active power generation jointly with reactive power compensation of distribution utility systems has been presented. Thus the five level multilevel inverter topology were chosen based on what has gone before, even if that topology may not be the best choice for the application. Several multilevel voltage source inverters and their modulation topologies are introduced. The cascaded-inverter with separated dc sources is discussed in detail with results to verify the proposed concepts. The improved capabilities of the grid-connected WECS to rapidly exchange active power with the electric system, simultaneously and independently of the reactive power exchange, permit to greatly enhance the operation and control of the electric system.
