Other items of the ship such as engines, generators, boilers, electrical items, furniture, plumbing items, refrigerators, air conditioners etc. have a good market in Bangladesh. A lot of stakeholders are involved with these scrapping activities. A coherent picture of these scrapping activities in Bangladesh from the angle of socio-economics benefits of different stake holders, constraints and problems for the development of this sector has been drawn in this book.

In view of the series of brutal murders of secular writers, gay activists, bloggers and liberal intellectuals by extremists in Bangladesh, the country is in need of healing on many levels ? Bangladesh?s overall inability to get to grips with extremism being the result of a fractured country, where legitimate criticism and debate are increasingly restricted. Hence the importance of improving human rights, gender equality and religious education in the country. Critical, but also deeply sensitive and humane, this book endeavours to improve public policy in Bangladesh; with both social scientific and Islamic approaches, so that social equality, civil liberties and a just social peace can be manifested in the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

Saw Myat Sandy's study deals with theoretical and empirical analysis of the political transitions in former Yugoslavia and Burma, the present day Myanmar. It covers the transition period of both states from the late 1980s until present. The author examines the democratic transition in both states, where the process has been 'unsuccessfully accomplished', i.e. after a very promising beginning sooner or later undermined by the challenges of the transition, which threatened to reverse, what was gained by democratisation. In this dissertation, Saw Myat Sandy argues that the democratic transition in both states became an extended process of transition' because of its multi-ethnic societies. The democratisation in former Yugoslavia led to disintegration, and in Myanmar it is proving to be an intractable one and has become almost un-resolvable to anyone's satisfaction. Myanmar today suffers from on-going political instabilities that cause political and social fragmentations but does not demonstrate that it will fall into conventional Balkan scenarios. This dissertation analyses if Myanmar's political transition will follow the former Yugoslavian fate by using the transition theoretical framework and highlighting the empirical facts on the problems of ethnicity and other political factors that relate to these democratisation processes. The theoretical approaches are based on the 'democratic transition and consolidation theories' argued by Juan J. Linz,...

Bangladesh has one of the highest densities of livestock in the world with 145 large ruminants per square kilometer. Dairy is the most important sector of livestock industry in Bangladesh that provides greater part of animal source protein for human consumption. Lifetime productivity of cows largely depends on their individual reproductive performance. In most countries, the primary objective of a reproductive control program in a dairy herd is to have each cow calve and produce a live calf in every 12 months. Like in many other countries, poor reproductive efficiency has been considered to be the major limiting factors in medium and large scale market oriented dairying in Bangladesh for achieving this goal. This book highlighted the overall reproductive efficiency in main milk pocket area of Bangladesh combining both traditional and recent measures of reproductive indexes.

Lindsay, Robert, was a governor of Sylhet (1778-1781). In one of his books, named Anecdotes of an Indian life, described Sylhet of Bangladesh, as the brim-full division with natural resources. Like Lindsey, the division also drawn a special attention of the people of neighboring districts of Bangladesh. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, a great number of people settled in Sylhet Division and Sunamgonj district as well. The district gradually turned into a shelter for the people of neighboring districts for her plenty of natural resources as well as due to natural calamities in other districts. But local people of Sunamgonj district under Sylhet division did not receive the neighboring people easily. They had to face various problems and violence. Local people recognized the settlers as burden and started to call them as "Abadi or Bengoli" that have discriminatory meanings. At the beginning, the settlers also were unable to avoid direct and indirect violence. From my childhood I have been observing this adverse situation. I have enclosed in my book about the created situation, violence and scope of peace from the academic point of view which I have realized in my varsity life.

Migration and development has achieved high standing in international agenda in recent years. There are numerous examples that migration and remittance contribute to poverty reduction and promote economic growth. In Bangladesh remittance is a major source of external finance that contributes significantly in boosting forex and managing BOP. In addition remittance allows rural poor to meet basic needs, open up opportunities investing in health care, education, social security for the elderly and help to boost local economy. But there remains a number of problems in different stages like, cost of migration, exploitations, hazards to sending money and limited attention by civil society and government. To address these issues, Bangladesh has initiated various reforms but still some measures need to be upgraded and redesigned. If these things can be done, Bangladesh will have the potentiality to emerge as a leading remittance earning country in the world and will be able to achieve sustainable growth and development. This analysis may be useful to the researchers, students and managers working in financial and commercial sector.

In Bangladesh, climate vulnerability is increasing along with poverty. But during international climate change debates, concern over 'justice' is glowing to finance adaptation. In this line, Bangladesh formulated 'National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA)' under UNFCCC guidance to abate climate change impact. The research views 'mainstreaming' as a process of promoting 'adaptation' to "transform vulnerability into (climate) security". In Bangladesh, NAPA mainstreaming is government-led and subject to use existing institutions and regulatory frameworks. Therefore, in what extend NAPA mainstreaming will be successful to promote 'socially-just adaptation to climate change' is difficult to predict. Here, the context is critically analyzed to structure institutional problems and actor dynamics to recommend policy amendments for intended mainstreaming. However, successful mainstreaming lies on balancing conflicts among diverse actors in order to promote security for the vulnerable people. Therefore, the research is arguing that the treatment of social justice must be included both in NAPA formulation and implementation phases for intended (socially-just) mainstreaming.

Ward no. 38 of Dhaka city has some spatial importance as various government administrative centers including Prime Minister's office are located here, though most of the local residents are from the middle income groups of the city. In this study, different PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) tools have been used to identify the problems faced by the people of ward no. 38 as a community. Though PRA tools are usually used for rural areas, through this research, an attempt has been made to apply these approaches in an urban community of Bangladesh. Later, the nature and extent of these problems, causes behind them and their effects, the desires of the community people, their perceptions and recommendations for solving all these difficulties have been revealed using a variety of PRA tools.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has experienced one of the most complex, meandering, and uncertain democratisation processes in Africa. In 2016 the third cycle of elections was not organised. The Presidential Majority (M.P) was accused of concocting an amendment of the constitution aimed at granting a third term to the incumbent President Joseph Kabila. Furthermore, the introduction of a Voting Machine by the electoral commission fuelled violent protests and a political impasse. The DRC tittered on the brink of collapse into another civil war in 2016.Yet, against all odds, the Congolese electoral commission organised peaceful elections in December 2018. Stunningly, the presidential election was won by the opposition. A peaceful transfer of power at the helm of the state occurred for the first time in the country after 58 years of independence. The DRC is now regarded as a model of political alternation in power in Central Africa. The essay stems from the observation that predominant theorisations of Congolese politics fail to grasp the fecundity of the Congolese democratisation. Most scholars and analysts tend to focus on the deficits and flaws inherent in Congolese politics. Hence, they are often oblivious to foundational strides accomplished in this process as it unfolded in the DRC. In comparison with the other subaltern groups, Biharis (Urdu-speaking linguistic minority) of Bangladesh belong to the lowest rung of the subaltern because of their political positioning and the conventional nationalistic stigma (they were collaborators of the Pakistani army during the Liberation War) attached to them. In 1947 these people migrated to Bangladesh from India in search of a ‘home’ but unfortunately, they have received neither in the form of home nor that of state. The least facilitated citizens of Bangladesh, these camp-dwellers Biharis are stereotyped as outsiders: they speak in Urdu; they still cherish the ideology of Pakistan. The fourth generations of Biharis claims Bangladesh as their homeland and are adopting the mainstream culture through a process of negotiation and negation. This work attempts to read the representation of the Biharis in the mainstream literature and media. Where non-fictional discourses invariably represent the Biharis in the negative light, literary works show considerable balance in representing the subaltern who appears both as fiends and friends. It can be hoped that this book will give a different thought about subalternity.

Microcredit operations began with the specific objective of poverty alleviation in Bangladesh. Poverty is widespread in Bangladesh. It is even more intense among the rural women of the country. Poverty situation improved with the expansion of microcrdit and rural women gained some empowerment as they had their own income through participation in the credit activities. But they are still far from achieving equal status with men because microcredit primarily addresses income poverty and it has inherent weaknesses in facilitating other conditions necessary for full empowerment of women. Not only are the inherent weaknesses, the socio-economic environment of rural Bangladesh, where microcredit functions, is also a big impediment to achieving women empowerment. Therefore, a comprehensive approach, which includes microcredit too, is necessary for further empowering the rural women of Bangladesh. This approach includes social mobilization, awareness-building, regulations enhancing, equitable financial practices and government initiatives.

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: Merit, University of Birmingham, course: International Development, language: English, abstract: Climate change is a global concern with its impending threats to economies, human development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Climate change impacts are currently being observed and studies show that poor countries are the most vulnerable. Using Bangladesh as a case study, this research examines the impacts of climate change to poor, rural communities and further explores the measures that are carried out to combat its existing and future threats. This research also aims to look into the existing socio-economic vulnerabilities of Bangladesh in order to establish the linkage between climate change and development. Findings of this study show that poor communities are impacted by climate change through the loss of lives, assets and livelihoods. Adaptation to climate change is therefore necessary and should be integrated in development planning and objectives, to ensure that the most vulnerable groups are represented. Overall this research has observed that Bangladesh is still lacking this capacity, despite the spontaneous adaptation being practised by local communities. This study has further observed that the most common response in addressing climate change impacts to vulnerable communities in Bangladesh is community-based adaptation, whi...

Bangladesh is one of the most disaster prone countries in the world. Over last 40 years different scales of cyclones have been affecting the country with loss of valuable lives and property. This research is illustrated by the cyclonic impact scenarios obtained from 1960-2010 in Bangladesh especially on coastal environment. The scenarios of this study shows that the November 12, 1970 cyclone ‘Bhola’ killed 500,000 peoples and April 29, 1991 cyclone ‘Gorky’ killed more than 130,000 Bangladeshis and left some 10 million homeless. Super cyclone ‘Sidr’ hits on 15 November in 2007. Bangladesh is a landing ground of cyclones because of the funnel shaped coast of the Bay of Bengal. The findings of this study are the main challenges to adaptation with coastal disasters are erratic poverty, shortage of cyclone centers, lack of modern technology, traditional cyclone warning system and coastal poor people careless mind respective custom and religion. In the recent years the developed nations have already had the opportunity to adapt with coastal disasters but unfortunately they take no consideration of the developing countries that are still in that challenging phase.

It also plays an important role (positive or negative) in the development of any country. In developing countries like Bangladesh, migration to cities creates more hazards in development. So, it is important to assess the socio-economic conditions of migrants and their causes. This study focuses this issue and recommends some policy which plays an important role for further advanced research. Clearly, it would be very helpful for policy makers, program designers to design or redesign programs or existing programs considering the identified risk factor of migration to cities in Bangladesh.

Trafficking in women and children has become an issue of growing concern worldwide. In today’s world it has become a “global phenomenon” and more than 130 countries are affected by trafficking. The magnitude of trafficking in Bangladesh has also increased over the years and the problem of trafficking has reached endemic proportions in Bangladesh. A comparative analysis of the recent Government’s anti-trafficking initiatives with United Nations anti-trafficking initiative showed that Bangladesh Government’s action plans mostly qualify the UN standard. However, the implementation of these strategies is not satisfactory and there is a gap between theoretical documents and practical implementation. Poverty or more particularly feminization of poverty along with lack of awareness; less or no job opportunity and uncertainties of livelihood of the women and children are the root causes of trafficking in Bangladesh. Non cooperation of the victims and witnesses with the Police and reluctance of them to produce the evidences against the traffickers before the Courts have been found to be the main reasons for the failure to bring the traffickers to justice.

This study discusses about need, scope and potentials for further investment in Bangladesh tea. Bangladesh produced 58.30 million Kg and consumed 37.44 million Kg of tea in 2003. Tea provides employment to 115,533 people. It alleviates rural poverty. Abrupt increase in internal consumption causes to decrease exportable surplus with low rate of production, which causes to decline tea export. If these trends continue the country will be a net importer of tea in 2017. Production is to be increased to meet internal demand and to retain export of tea. For producing additional tea new avenues like small holding tea cultivation (SHTC) is to be explored. This study introduces investment covering gestation period within which tea plants are brought to bearing. Comparative advantage is available in tea. Investment in tea seems to be viable since NPV is positive, B-C ratio is greater than one and IRR is above market rate of interest. The outcomes of development projects are extremely discriminatory ownership-wise, class-wise and region-wise. Investment in SHTC, small & least developed estates may help Bangladesh to emerge as one of the major tea producing and exporting countries in the World.

Over the past 25 years labour migration from Bangladesh has registered a steady increase. From 1990 onwards on an average 2,25,000 Bangladeshis are migrating on short-term employment. The recent trend of the bulk of the migrants is more towards semi and unskilled labour migration. Major outflow of Bangladeshi labour generated significant financial flow to the country in the form of remittance. However, due to increase in the flow of unskilled and semi- skilled labour, remittance is increasing at a much lower rate than the labour flow. Remittance is crucial for Bangladesh's economy. It constitutes almost one-third of the foreign exchange earning. In 1998-99, remittance contributed 22 percent in financing imports. Studies have shown it has strong positive impact on GDP, and also on consumption and investment. This research assesses to identify the role of remittance in rural development. It also evaluates current uses and impacts of remittance, the characteristics of remittance sending and remittance receiving persons. The research also explores the problems and possible potentials in effective uses of remittance for rural development through investment in productive sectors.

My interest to understand role of language in teaching and learning mathematical word problems evoked from my teaching and learning experiences. When I look back at my own learning experiences of mathematics at the secondary level, I remember that on a majority of occasions I felt handicapped in understanding the language of the text, especially in mathematics. This is because the language of teaching and learning mathematics is underestimated by teachers. Likewise, during my teaching I realized the need to find out about the role of language in teaching and learning word problems. As I observed students facing difficulties in understanding word problems presented in English. As a result, I wondered as to what extent language played a crucial role in understanding mathematical word problems. Was the role of language in mathematics being ignored? why did one need to understand the language of teaching and learning mathematics? These questions kept bothering me especially when I came across word problems because I believed that language and mathematical word problems were strongly related. Consequently, this book examines the connection between language and mathematical word problems.

The present book contains one hundred and sixty problems, most of them simple, in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. Some of these problems were used previously by the authors in their courses at the Moscow Institute of Engineering and Physics. However, the majority were drawn up or selected in the course of work on the book. This book is designed for physics students who are studying quantum mechanics approximately at the level of D.I.Blokhintsev's book or Part II of "Theoretical Physics" by A.S.Kompaneyts. A number of problems is intended primarily for students who are beginning to specialize in theoretical physics and who are partially familiar with the contents of "Quantum Mechanics" by L.D.Landau and Ye.M.Lifshits. Some problems illustrate individual theoretical questions which have scarcely been considered in textbooks: sudden and adiabatic changes; Heisenberg representation of operators; probability relations in addition of momenta; isotopic spin; parity; and others. The authors have tried to use relatively elementary mathematical tools of quantum mechanics to facilitate use of the book by nontheoretical physicists. With a few exceptions, the authors have not included in this book problems which are considered in sufficient detail in the basic textbooks mentioned above and in the problem book on quantum mechanics written by V.G.Levich. Therefore, this book should be regarded chiefly as an auxiliary textbook in the study of the above books.

Linz,...
