Mohamed Mbarouk Suleiman Teachers. Experiences of Teaching Science with Limited Laboratory Resources

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Pedagogy - Miscellaneous Topics, grade: B+, , course: Master of Education, language: English, abstract: Laboratory resources play a vital role in the teaching-learning process of science subjects. However, in Tanzanian public secondary schools, there is inequality in the provision of these resources such that the community secondary schools have very few laboratory resources. Yet, these schools sit for the same national examination with better resources' schools. This study focused on exploring teachers' experiences of teaching science subjects with limited laboratory resources in community secondary schools in Lindi region in Tanzania. The study employed qualitative case study design. The research participants of the study were four science teachers from two community secondary schools. Data was collected through qualitative semi-structured interviews, classroom observation, focus group discussion and informal conversations. The study identified that there is a great deficiency in the availability of science laboratories resources. Whereas one school has a laboratory with limited resources, in the other school, uses movable laboratory to perform science experiments since the school has no laboratory. The findings of the study indicated that science teachers experience difficulties in teaching and learning science because of inadequate laboratory resources. This limits them to teach according to their belief, that ...

Application of Visual Data in K-16 Science Classrooms

This book examines visual data use with students (PK-16) as well as in pre-service in- service scienceteacher preparation. Each chapter includes discussion about the current state of the art with respect toscience classroom application and utilization of the particular visual data targeted by the author(s),discussion and explanation about the targeted visual data as applied by the author in his/her classroom, useof visual data as a diagnostic tool, its use as an assessment tool, and discussion of implications for scienceteaching and/or science teacher preparation.Although the body of research and practice in this field is growing, there remains a gap in the literatureabout clearly explicating the use of visual data in the science classroom. A growing body of literaturediscusses what visual data are (although this topic is still viewed as being at the beginning of itsdevelopment in educators' thinking), and there are some scattered examples of studies exploring the use ofvisual data in science classrooms, although those studies have not necessarily clearly identified their foci asvisual data, per se. As interest and attention has become more focused on visual data, a logical progressionof questioning has been how visual data are actually applied in the science classroom, whether it be early elementary, college, or somewhere inbetween. Visual data applications of interest to the science education community include how it is identified, how it can be used with students and h...

Mathematical Understanding for Secondary Teaching. A Framework and Classroom-Based Situations

A perennial discussion about teacher development is the optimal content background for teachers. Inrecent years, that discussion has taken center stage in the work of mathematics education researchers, mathematicians, mathematics professional developers, and mathematics education policymakers. Muchof the existing and prior work in this area has been directed toward mathematical knowledge forteaching at the elementary level. The work described in this volume takes a sometimes-neglectedapproach, focusing on the dynamic nature of mathematical understanding rather than on a stabledescription of mathematical knowledge, and on mathematics for secondary teaching rather thanmathematics for teaching at the elementary level. The work reported in Mathematical Understanding for Secondary Teaching: A Framework and Classroom-Based Situations is a practice-basedresponse to the question of what mathematical understandings secondary teachers could productively use in their teaching. For each of more than 50events, our team of almost 50 mathematics educators who were experienced mathematics teachers developed descriptions of the mathematics thatteachers could use-each of those descriptions (consisting of the event and the mathematics related to the event) is what we call a Situation. Wedeveloped our Framework for Mathematical Understanding for Secondary Teaching (MUST) based on an analysis of our entire set of Situations. Wecall the work practice-based because the MUST framework is based on actu...

Everyone who looks back on former school days, might remember that learning was more enjoyable when the topics were interesting and furthermore, when they were handled in an exiting way.The intention of this study is to present several ideas of improving the general motivation in the classroom. In addition to that, the current interests of students from German secondary schools and the consideration of the interests in the common English classroom will be presented with the help of a questionnaire. Part one gives an overview of the terms interest and motivation in its psychological context and in relation to their meaning in the English classroom. The second part mentions the importance of incorporating students' interest in the learning classroom. Further, the third part deals with several possibilities of creating motivational conditions in the L2 classroom. Part four presents the results and the evaluation of a research which was conducted on the basis of the theoretical aspects. Part five deals with the content of the Lower Saxony Core Curriculum and the way it considers the students' interests. Finally, the author sums up the results of the research and draws a conclusion.

The introduction will include various definitions of inquiryoffered in the research literature accompanied by what we see as useful ways to conceptualize the broadpractices that comprise inquiry in the classroom. Following the introduction the six sections of the book eachexplore factors that influence the use of inquiry in the classroom. Each section begins with one (or more)vignette--snippets of science classrooms. The authors discuss how this vignette demonstrates some aspect ofthe specific dimension that they are charged with discussing. Because inquiry is so multifaceted and itsportrayals are often complex and nuanced, the discussion of the dimension is broken into separate essays--each of which addresses the focal dimension in different ways. Following the essay, a broader discussion across the essays is offered to support yourunderstanding of inquiry.

This study analyses examples of classroom discourse, one of the most important influences on students' experience in schools, in EFL classes. The central idea of the author's enquiry is to compare classroom discourse in two secondary schools in two European countries, namely Austria on the one hand, and Spain on the other hand. The focus of the study is on EFL classes taught by a team of a non-native speaker teacher and a native speaker assistant. The purposes of this study are to gain insights into classroom communication, to compare classroom discourse in two different countries to see whether culturally specific rules of classroom communication might apply, and to investigate the contact situation of two different (if existent) communication strategies in classroom discourse. Therefore, the study aims to answer the following research question: Do the cultural modes of classroom communication in EFL classes (taught by a team of a teacher and an assistant) differ from each other? The data needed for this study were collected by means of video-recording; audio-portions were transcribed; and the data was analysed using methods of Conversational Analysis. The author focuses in particular on turn-taking, the occurrence of the IRE / IRF sequence and simultaneous speech, as well as restarts and pauses. The analysis shows how certain conversational structures, such as simultaneous speech or the IRE / IRF sequence, work in classroom discourse. The results hint at different cu...

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, Free University of Berlin (Otto-Suhr-Institut für Politikwissenschaft), language: English, abstract: It is an ongoing discussion in the political science literature whether a federalist country rather provides a valuable setting for policy experimentation in the subnational entities or whether too much autonomy leads to destructive competition among them. One often mentioned and tested approach to the field is the race to the bottom hypothesis. The initiative demands that the share of secondary residences in the Swiss communities can not exceed 20 % of the total number of residences. In those communities that already have a higher share an immediate building freeze has to be enacted. Longchamp et al. showed that the share of secondary residences in a community is a good explanatory for the result of the popular vote. Those communities with a share already higher than 20 % mostly voted no, while the communities with less secondary residences...

The definition of quality education depends upon the subject's perspective. For example, for the students it may stand for the facilities provided to them; for parents it may be the learning outcomes; for teachers it may be the improvement of teaching learning processes; for prospective employers it may be the nature of the output. Secondary education takes a vital part in the formation of active citizens and also plays a critical role in addressing the emerging human development concerns in countries engaged in building knowledge societies to stay connected to the process of globalization. The role of secondary education in the growth of a nation is paramount and significant, more particularly in developing countries. Secondary education is the single largest supplier of labour force in most of the developing countries, including India. In view of the relation between education and economic growth in a less developed state like India, it is not the highly sophisticated manpower but the middle level (secondary) manpower that is necessary for enhancing the economic growth. This study deals with secondary education in Tripura, India. Academicians, researchers and students who are interested in studying secondary education in general and secondary education of Tripura in particular are the target group of this book which will surely help them to understand the problem of quality secondary education in India.

Nasreen Bano, Mehnaz Ansari, Mohammad Yousuf Ganai A Study of Personality Characteristics and Values of Secondary School Teachers in Relation to their Classroom Performance and Students. Likings

Teachers are called nation builders in every country and in every society. The role of teachers is of great importance. It is left to the teachers to inculcate personality characteristics, right values - the values of good citizenship producing law abiding and nation loving citizens. India has made considerable progress in school education since independence with reference to overall literacy, infrastructure and universal access and enrolment in schools. Two major developments in the recent years form the background to the present reform in teacher education - the political recognition of Universalization of Elementary Education (UEE) as a legitimate demand and the state commitment towards UEE in the form of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. The country has to address the need of supplying well qualified and professionally trained teachers in larger numbers in the coming years. At the same time, the demand for quality secondary education is steadily increasing. It is recommended that the aim should be to reach universal secondary education within a maximum of ten years. Given the problems of inadequate quality in most secondary schools due to poor infrastructure and insufficient and poorly equipped teachers, the need for addressing the professional education of secondary teachers acquires great importance. The education of teachers should be such that teachers should set an example and provide for their pupils the ideal of the citizens who is co...

Most faculty are not aware that there is an extensive body of research on the topic from which instructors can learn to facilitate exceptional classroom discussion. Discussion in the College Classroom is a practical guide which utilizes that research, frames it sociologically, and offers advice, along with a wide variety of strategies, to help you spark a relevant conversation and steer it toward specific learning goals. Applicable across a spectrum of academic disciplines both online and on campus, these ideas will help you overcome the practical challenges and norms that can undermine discussion, and foster a new atmosphere of collaborative learning and critical thinking. Higher education faculty are increasingly expected to be more intentional and reflective in their pedagogical practice, and this guide shows you how to meet those expectations, improve student outcomes, and tackle the perennial problem of lagging engagement. Thoroughly grounded in the scholarship of teaching and learning, this book gives you concrete guidance on integrating discussion into your courses. You'll learn to: Overcome the challenges that inhibit effective discussion Develop classroom norms that facilitate discussion Keep discussion focused, relevant, and productive Maximize the utility of online student discussions The kind of discussion that improves learning rarely arises spontaneously.
