The aim of this work is the better understanding of structural sexual violence against women. Through a human rights approach, the author examines the link between the gendered discriminatory policies against women and the occurrences of sexual violence against female soldiers within the Peruvian Armed Forces. This empirical study demonstrates that whereas civil and political rights must be respected and enforced, the satisfaction of socio-economic rights is also a key element for the prevention of violence against women. The cases of discrimination in the access to education, to labor, and reproductive rights within the Peruvian Military demonstrate that, in reality, women are forced to remain in situations where they are exposed to sexual violence because of the existence of structural organizations perpetuating the unequal power relations between men and women.

The study has found that female refugees in refugee camp were exposed to sexual violence, physical violence and socio-economic violence including attempt rape, rape, gang rape, physical injuries, discrimination and stigmatization and denial of access to services. The book also disclosed that male refugees and intimate partners of female refugees were the prime gender based violence perpetrators of female refugees in Mai Ayni refugee camp. Moreover, the study revealed that idleness, economic dependency, physical insecurity, lack of awareness, collapse of social and family structure as well as poor reporting, coordination and legal enforcement mechanisms were identified as causes/risk factors for gender based violence against female refugees in refugee camp. Moreover, men's feeling of 'loss of power' in the camp, which challenges male's identity as superior to female, led male refugees to anger and makes female refugees vulnerable to different forms of gender based violence. Consequently, because of gender based violence, female refugees in refugee camp have short and long lasting damaging consequence on their life in terms of health, physical and psycho-social.

This involves leaving behind familiar support and moving great distances to unknown foreign destinations. Refugees seek better conditions considering the earth as a common place and associate themselves with other societies. Under such state of affairs there are legal challenges the study discovered. The required legal documents to cross the boarders, absence of legal-council in the country of asylum, the refugee governance and the nature of trans-nationality of refugee status determination are the main legal challenges that make refugee status determination unpredictable. On top of that the study unearthed politicization of refugee protection and the perceptions towards refugees. This research emphasis on a specific type of violence which prevails in our society but is neglected due to its nature, the violence against men. Over the last few decades there have been several types of assaults against men by women/ men but they have not been given any attention mainly because our cultural setup of the society always sees the women as innocent so in the category of being victimized by any type of violence, women are mainly highlighted and are given significant importance. Violence against men in my locality of study (New Abaadi Chaakra) mainly comprises of physical, mental, psychological, sexual, emotional and economical aspects of violence. This study concludes that men are also subjected to violence and are mainly neglected or in some cases they are accused of being violent even though they have been victimized. This is due to the fact that a woman in our society enjoys a very highly dignified post where she is always seen as innocent at the first instance. Exploiting this very notion the women commits various types of violence against men ranging from psychological, emotional, and sexual to even physical types.

Many persons have expressed alarm and surprise at the acquittals of alleged sexual offenders by juries in Jamaica. Women are the main victims of sexual offenses. Their confidence in the system of trial by jury is critical. Some observers assert that men on the jury in sexual cases are biased against women because men are the perpetrators of such offenses. Others counter that it is the women on the jury who acquit men of sexual offenses. These assertions are mainly based on anecdotal experiences. Therefore this study conducted an empirical examination of several jury trials of sexual offenses in Jamaica. Its purpose was to test the validity of these assertions and to ascertain if there is any systemic gender bias in sexual trials. It is the first such study in Jamaica and in the Caribbean. Based on the findings, the researcher recommends strategies for solving this socio-legal problem in Jamaica. Victims, social workers, counselors, lawyers, judges, womens activist and the media can obtain useful insights about some socio-legal issues in the Jamaican and Caribbean society.

Rethinking Rufus is the first book-length study of sexual violence against enslaved men. Scholars have extensively documented the widespread sexual exploitation and abuse suffered by enslaved women, with comparatively little attention paid to the stories of men. However, a careful reading of extant sources reveals that sexual assault of enslaved men also occurred systematically and in a wide variety of forms, including physical assault, sexual coercion, and other intimate violations. To tell the story of men such as Rufus--who was coerced into a sexual union with an enslaved woman, Rose, whose resistance of this union is widely celebrated--historian Thomas A. Foster interrogates a range of sources on slavery: early American newspapers, court records, enslavers' journals, abolitionist literature, the testimony of formerly enslaved people collected in autobiographies and in interviews, and various forms of artistic representation. Foster's sustained examination of how black men were sexually violated by both white men and white women makes an important contribution to our understanding of masculinity, sexuality, the lived experience of enslaved men, and the general power dynamics fostered by the institution of slavery. Rethinking Rufus illuminates how the conditions of slavery gave rise to a variety of forms of sexual assault and exploitation that affected all members of the community.

In the last decade, Tanzanian’s approach to refugee protection has changed from ‘open-door’ policy to limited respect of refugee rights. This change is evident in not only sporadic refoulement of refugees but also in restrictive admission policies, decreased durable solution opportunities, and general disregard of other refugee rights. The major factors, which influenced Tanzania’s new policies and practices are: democratisation process and change of ideology, lack of equitable responsibility sharing and increasing compassion fatigued. Accordingly, safeguarding the rights of refugees require collective action at the international level to address problems facing countries like Tanzania. Tanzania should resort to requesting effective and adequate international community support and this be incorporated into the larger domestic and foreign policy agenda.

Unlike the 1930s, when the United States tragically failed to open its doors to Europeans fleeing Nazism, the country admitted over three million refugees during the Cold War. This dramatic reversal gave rise to intense political and cultural battles, pitting refugee advocates against determined opponents who at times successfully slowed admissions. The first comprehensive historical exploration of American refugee affairs from the midcentury to the present, Americans at the Gate explores the reasons behind the remarkable changes to American refugee policy, laws, and programs. Carl Bon Tempo looks at the Hungarian, Cuban, and Indochinese refugee crises, and he examines major pieces of legislation, including the Refugee Relief Act and the 1980 Refugee Act. He argues that the American commitment to refugees in the post-1945 era occurred not just because of foreign policy imperatives during the Cold War, but also because of particular domestic developments within the United States such as the Red Scare, the Civil Rights Movement, the rise of the Right, and partisan electoral politics. Using a wide variety of sources and documents, Americans at the Gate considers policy and law developments in connection with the organization and administration of refugee programs.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of women become victims of sexual violence in conflict zones around the world; in the Democratic Republic of Congo alone, approximately 1,100 rapes are reported each month. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the causes, consequences and responses to sexual violence in contemporary armed conflict. It explores the function and effect of wartime sexual violence and examines the conditions that make women and girls most vulnerable to these acts both before, during and after conflict. To understand the motivations of the men (and occasionally women) who perpetrate this violence, the book analyzes the role played by systemic and situational factors such as patriarchy and militarized masculinity. Difficult questions of accountability are tackled; in particular, the case of child soldiers, who often suffer a double victimization when forced to commit sexual atrocities. The book concludes by looking at strategies of prevention and protection as well as new programs being set up on the ground to support the rehabilitation of survivors and their communities. Sexual violence in war has long been a taboo subject but, as this book shows, new and courageous steps are at last being taken Ð at both local and international level – to end what has been called the “greatest silence in history”.

Refugees and Political Conflicts While refugee protection has been an attempt to protect human lives and minimize refugee-generated conflicts, refugees have turned out to be a significant contributor to cross-border political conflicts. This has been possible by the fact that refugees get involved in the politics of the host country, carrying out subversive activities to their home government or even yet to another third country. Refugees have also made governments and regimes perceive each other as enemies, hence adopting competitive foreign policies. Refugees protract and internationalize internal conflicts making management efforts complex. Therefore, conflict management efforts should not only concentrate in refugee protection and assistance but should attempt to address the causes of refugee flow if at all they seek to achieve success in conflict management. Therefore, the presence of refugee precipitates to cross-border political conflicts. As long as the Great Lakes region will continue to have high refugee population cross-border political conflicts will persist or even escalate with the diminishing environmental resources.

Refugee problem bacame a subject requiring measures after the First World War when millions of refugees in need for protection and passports poured into Europe and elsewhere. The League of Nations together with the ILO had to take responsibility for coordinating the efforts of the international community on behalf of these destitute people. This work shows how the failure of the LON in its central task, maintainig the peace, has shadowed the evaluation of other operations of the intergovernmental community. The book describes and analyses how the refugee work was conducted succesfully during the Inter-war period despite the difficulties the LON and the ILO had to face. The substance of a succesful policy was guided by the refugee situations. There was continuation and persistence in this refugee policy throughout the existence of the world organizations. Huge numbers of homeless people were able to get a new life through the various creative solutions applied by the intergovernmental refugee regime. The innovative approach of the organizations should be a source of inspiration for everyone dealing with the similar challenges: the refugee problem is still among us!

The progressive understanding of poverty include not only economic and material conditions, but also a lack of power, freedom and resources to decide and shape one's own life. Social and legal norms and economic structures based around sexuality have a tangible impact on people's physical security, bodily integrity, health, education, mobility and economic status. The expressions for the interwoven relation of poverty and sexuality are many. Many people with 'deviant' sexuality are subject to economic discrimination, leading to marginalization that has effect of reducing their livelihood opportunities. In this Publication the links between women's sexual rights and poverty in the African context is explored . It illustrates how the lack of protection and recognition of women's sexual rights as understood in the African context can be the cause and consequences of poverty. The publication provides arguments as to how addressing sexual rights of women in poverty alleviation programmes can contribute to the realization of meaningful development for the African women and a way forward as to how the issue of Sexual Rights and poverty can be fostered.

This is a book about the crisis of the European integration project as seen from the vantage point of people's movements across and to the European continent. But why should the issue of refugees or of migration have anything to do with the dynamics of the integration or disintegration of the European Union? If anything, the existing global refugee protection regime was conceived in Europe at about the time when Europe began to integrate: It was seen as a moral imperative in the context of European solidarity and in the face of crisis. How did refugee protection become so controversial as to usher in a crisis of its own? Why do European governments and their peoples see refugees and migrants as the cause of a crisis in and of Europe? Solidarity, legitimacy, democracy, welfare, rights: How has refugee migration undermined European positions on all that has defined EU integration so far? This collection engages with these questions by focusing on the construction of the crisis narrative, offering an insight into distinctly European perspectives on and analyses of political responses to refugees, migration, and economic challenges. The aim of the volume is to provide an empirical and thematic context for understanding the link between refugee migration and the overpowering perception of Europe in crisis.

Gender, Violence, and Justice is a volume of collected essays by an expert in the field of violence against women and pastoral theology. It represents over three decades of research, advocacy, and pastoral theological reflection on the subject of sexual and domestic violence. Topics include intimate partner violence, sexual abuse and trauma, and clergy sexual misconduct; controversial theological issues such as forgiveness; and, as well, positive frameworks for fostering well-being in families, church, and society.Framed by a foreword and an introduction that place this work in the context of new and contemporary challenges in theory and practice, these essays show an evolution of issues and frameworks for theology, care, and activism arising over time from the movement to end violence against women (both within and beyond religious communities)--while at the same time demonstrating an unchanging core commitment to gender justice.""It is a sad reality that Pamela Cooper-White's Gender, Violence, and Justice volume, is so timely in 2019. Many of these children were abused and witnessed traumatic experiences, their close relatives and neighbours being executed in cold blood. This study was guided by three critical questions: i) who are the Zimbabwean refugee learners? ii) what were Zimbabwean refugee learners' migration experiences? and iii) what were Zimbabwean refugee learners' school experiences? The study employed Bronfenbrenner's Social Ecological Model as its overarching theoretical framework. Each stage of the refugee experience was described at each point in time.

This book examined the associations between commitment, sexual satisfaction, and attachment to explore the mechanisms by which commitment is associated with sexual satisfaction. This study explored whether three pro-relationship sexual behaviors (disclosure of own needs, motivation to satisfy partner, and emotional bond) mediated the association between commitment and sexual satisfaction for securely and insecurely attached women. It was expected that the three pro-sexual relationship behaviors would mediate the relationship between commitment and sexual satisfaction for the securely attached individuals, but not for the insecurely attached individuals. The results indicated that women who reported being more committed in their relationship also reported an increased motivation to satisfy their partner and an emotional bond. Emotional connection did mediate the relationship between commitment and sexual satisfaction. Path analysis indicated that emotional connection mediates the relationship between commitment and sexual satisfaction, regardless of attachment style.

This mean that gender- related violence crosses many path. These include sexual assault, spousal abuse, sexual harassment, coerced sterilization and childbearing. Other are criminalized abortion and female circumcision. Violence issues against women are generally omitted from agenda of health. Many culture blame women for the abuse rather than researching for the true facts. Therefore, many women have limited resources for seeking help to learn how to cope with negative behaviorsin an abusive relationship. So, be aware that some men regard their wives as property, which mean they have all of the power to make demands and control. The new changing role in domestic violence has taken on a new face. It is no longer husband against wife; the dynamic has changed drastically within the family net networks. Now we see intimate partner violence due to the changing role of players.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Accounting and Taxes, grade: 2, , course: Dissertation, language: English, abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of control mechanisms that are being pursued by ZIMRA in fighting tax offences. It was based on primary data obtained from taxpayers, tax consultants and revenue officers. A survey was carried out to investigate the existence of tax offences in Zimbabwe, causes of the tax offences and the effectiveness of current measures that are aimed at reducing these offences. Tax audits, prosecution and naming and shaming of tax offenders were among the few measures that were considered effective while whistle blowing and penalties were less effective. However, corruption and limited capacity to audit reduce the effectiveness of these strategies. A roadmap was set to improve the current system and suggestions were made for amendment of the legal system to accommodate for unannounced audits and mystery shopping to be tested. In addition to additions to the legal system, administrative measures such as e-registration and special treatment of small taxpayers were considered as other tool which can be added to the current package of control mechanisms. The overall conclusion was that there are weaknesses in the current control system and therefore it is not completely effective.

Chosen by The Humanitarian Times as one of the Top Ten Titles on Humanitarian Issues of 1998.At the start of the 1990s, there was great optimism that the end of the Cold War might also mean the end of the "refugee cycle" - both a breaking of the cycle of violence, persecution and flight, and the completion of the cycle for those able to return to their homes. The 1990s, it was hoped, would become the "decade of repatriation." However, although over nine million refugees were repatriated worldwide between 1991 and 1995, there are reasons to believe that it will not necessarily be a durable solution for refugees. It certainly has become clear that "the end of the refugee cycle" has been much more complex, and ultimately more elusive, than expected. The changing constructions and realities of refugee repatriation provide the backdrop for this book which presents new empirical research on examples of refugee repatriation and reconstruction. Apart from providing up-to-date material, it also fills a more fundamental gap in the literature which has tended to be based on pedagogical reasoning rather than actual field research. Adopting a global perspective, this volume draws together conclusions from highly varied experiences of refugee repatriation and defines repatriation and reconstruction as part of a wider and interrelated refugee cycle of displacement, exile and return. The contributions come from authors with a wealth of relevant practical and academic ...

Noone questions today the increasing role of non-governmental organizations in international relations. The field of refugee protection requires a complex attitude from NGOs, as here they meet with growing reluctance of state actors, whose interests are more formulated by economic and security aspects. That is why NGOs does not only provide first-hand assistance to those in need, but also try to influence state's actions, force them to comply with their obligations, sets up new issues on the international agenda, and cooperates with other actors in policy-formulation. Present essay aims to examine this complex role of the non-governmental actors in international relations, and more particularly in the global refugee regime from both NGO and regime analysis points of view. While this essay proves clearly the importance of NGOs, it also shows those faults the regime actors have to overcome and those areas where closer cooperation is needed between them in order to reach the regime's ultimate goal of “providing international protection and seeking permanent solutions for the problems of refugees”.
