In contrast to most accounts of Puritan-Indian relations, New England Frontier argues that the first two generations of Puritan settlers were neither generally hostile toward their Indian neighbors nor indifferent to their territorial rights. Rather, American Puritans-especially their political and religious leaders-sought peaceful and equitable relations as the first step in molding the Indians into neo-Englishmen. With a new introduction, this third edition affords the reader a clear, balanced overview of a complex and sensitive area of American history."Vaughan has exhaustively examined the records and written a book of indispensable value to any student of colonial New England."-New York Times Book ReviewAlden T. Vaughan, Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia University is the author or editor of numerous books, including The Puritan Tradition in America, 1620-1730, New England's Prospect, and Puritans among the Indians.

Andrew Newman Allegories of Encounter. Colonial Literacy and Indian Captivities

3227 руб.
Presenting an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to colonial America's best-known literary genre, Andrew Newman analyzes depictions of reading, writing, and recollecting texts in Indian captivity narratives. While histories of literacy and colonialism have emphasized the experiences of Native Americans, as students in missionary schools or as parties to treacherous treaties, captivity narratives reveal what literacy meant to colonists among Indians. Colonial captives treasured the written word in order to distinguish themselves from their Native captors and to affiliate with their distant cultural communities. Their narratives suggest that Indians recognized this value, sometimes with benevolence: repeatedly, they presented colonists with books. In this way and others, Scriptures, saintly lives, and even Shakespeare were introduced into diverse experiences of colonial captivity. What other scholars have understood more simply as textual parallels, Newman argues instead may reflect lived allegories, the identification of one's own unfolding story with the stories of others. In an authoritative, wide-ranging study that encompasses the foundational New England narratives, accounts of martyrdom and cultural conversion in New France and Mohawk country in the 1600s, and narratives set in Cherokee territory and the Great Lakes region during the late eighteenth century, Newman opens up old tales to fresh, thought-provoking interpretations.

A famous account of abduction and escape from hostile Indians in the old WestIn July, 1864 hostile Oglala Sioux Indians attacked the wagon train of the pioneering Kelly and Larimer families approximately 80 miles west of Fort Laramie, Wyoming. Several people were killed or wounded but Sarah Larimer and Fanny Kelly, together with some of their children, were taken into captivity by the Indians. On the second night of their captivity Sarah Larimer and her son managed to escape from the Indian camp and after many difficulties and privations they reached the Deer Creek telegraph station and safety. This book is Sarah Larimer's story of her ordeal. Fanny Kelly's captivity with the Sioux lasted longer and on her release she also wrote a book about her experiences. She also sued Sarah Larimer over her memoir and several trials took place over ten years before the matter was settled. Fanny Kelly's book entitled, 'My Captivity among the Sioux Indians,' is also available in a Leonaur edition, and is equally valuable source material for students of the subject. The two books provide fascinating insights into the westward passage of pioneer families in North America, and those interested in the Indian tribes of the Great Plains during their struggle to maintain their traditional way of life will also find much to interest them in the pages of these books. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with ...

Volume 128 in the The Civilization of the American Indian Series "After 30 years of assessing firsthand accounts (both Indian and white), Pawnee oral history, anthropological and archeological evidence, Hyde completed probably his best synthesis among the many works he produced. Although other fragmentary works have been published on the Pawnees, none has yet touched Hyde's work for comprehensiveness or insight. And as stated in the foreword, no study of the Plains or Plains Indians is complete without some consideration of the Pawnees."-Choice."His narrative of Pawnee history since the early 1800s is based upon careful research and thoughtful reconstruction and in this reader's opinion is rhetorically superior."-American West."George Hyde painstakingly assembled information from early accounts, Indian Bureau records, tribal legends, and recent archaeological investigations to present this cohesive story of the early Caddoan tribes, the evolution of the Pawnee groups as they were known in the nineteenth century and their eventual fate on an Oklahoma reservation. His work is factual and objective. . . .The Pawnee Indians is written in the best Hyde tradition-scholarly, objective and remarkable pleasant to read. It is unhesitantly recommended to anyone interested in Plains Indians and their relations with the whites. One item of special interest is the section of the appendix discussing the true identity of the Padouca Indians so often mentioned in e...

The Adventures of John Jewitt, only Survivor of the Crew of the Ship Boston during a Captivity of Nearly Three Years among the Indians of Nootka Sound in Vancouver IslandBy John Jewitt. Edited with an introduction and notes by Robert Brown, PhD.In 1803, the American ship Boston was attacked, seized, and burned by Nootka Indians while anchored off the Pacific Northwest Coast of what is now Canada. This journal-written by one of only two survivors of the massacre, provides a fascinating insight into the author's 28 months as a slave of the Indians, one of the few white men to endure such a lengthy ordeal and live to tell the tale.Jewitt's life was spared by the Indian chief Maquina, who realized that it was useful to have an armorer slave who could repair the European weapons which had fallen into Indian hands. Slaves were the Indians' most valuable property, and each Indian tribe kept hundreds of them.Jewitt began keeping a journal, carefully recording everyday details about the Indians, their lifestyle, customs, and traditions. His descriptions provided anthropologists with a unique insight into early Amerindian society, while the story of his exploits and eventual escape make for a riveting adventure story.

Scarlet Point's raid in IowaIn March 1857, after a particularly severe winter, a band of fourteen starving, renegade Wahpekute Santee Sioux led by Scarlet Point (Inkpaduta) descended on the settlements scattered along the north western Iowa frontier close to the Minnesota border. The Indians were desperate for food and, furthermore, sought revenge for outrages perpetrated against them by white settlers-including the murder of Scarlet Point's brother and his family. The killing spree that followed cost the lives of 35-40 settlers who were isolated on their own land holdings. At Spirit Lake the Indians also abducted four women and carried them into captivity. Notable among them was the fourteen year old, Abbe Gardner who survived to be ransomed during the following summer and subsequently wrote an account of her ordeal (is also available as a Leonaur edition). Two attempts were made by government forces to pursue the fleeing Indians from Forts Dodge and Ridgely, but tardy management, a delay in setting off and appalling weather in the form of almost impassable snowfall, meant both rescue and reprisal missions failed. The Spirit Lake raid and massacre was the last Indian attack to take place in Iowa. This unique Leonaur book brings together two accounts of this famous incident in the history of the settlement of the western frontiers of the United States of America.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardbac...

First published in 1859, Nelson Lee's Three Years Among the Comanches is perhaps the most widely known story of all Indian captivity narratives. Lee was a Texan Ranger captured by marauding Indians in the 1850s and forced to live with them as a slave for three years before making his escape. His account includes detailed descriptions of life in a nomadic Comanche village, his marriage to a young squaw, buffalo hunts, Comanche versus Apache conflicts, Comanche mythology and gut-wrenching descriptions of the terrible fates of his fellow-captives who were tortured before him, his life being spared only because of a silver alarm clock he possessed, the loud workings of which mystified his superstitious captors.

The incredible story of the girl with the face tattooThe story of the Oatman girls, Olive and Mary Ann, is one of the most famous accounts of the abduction of white women by indigenous Indians in the annals of the history of the American western frontier. The Oatman's, led by their patriarch Royce, were a family of nine. Members of the Mormon faith, they had become dissenters of Brigham Young's leadership and allying themselves with James Brewster and his 'Brewsterites' resolved to move to California in 1850. The original substantial wagon-train they had formed for security split as a result of disagreements within the party and the group to which the Oatman's belonged further fragmented until the family were left travelling alone, against all advice, in hostile Indian territory. On the banks of the Gila River (in present day Arizona) the family were attacked by Indians and all were slaughtered with the exception of two girls, aged 13 and 7 years, who were abducted and a brother. Their brother Lorenzo was felled by a club blow, presumed dead by the assailants, and left among the corpses of his mother, father and siblings, but he regained consciousness and eventually found his way to safety. The girl's captors, Tolkepayas or Yavapais, kept the girls in slavery for a period then sold them to Mohave Apaches. The story of the ordeals of the Oatman girls has inspired fiction and works of history alike. Olive Oatman's face ,with its distinctive tattoo ha...

For almost half a century, the Santa Fe Trail served as an avenue for both peaceful and violent exchange. Stephen G. Hyslop uses eyewitness accounts to explore the Santa Fe Trail's evolving role in the relationships among Americans, Mexicans, and Plains Indians. Hyslop concludes with the fateful episode that made the Santa Fe Trail an avenue for America's largest historical ambitions-the occupation of New Mexico in the summer of 1846. "Hyslop shows in his meticulously researched and adroitly written history...his apt visualization of the Santa Fe Trail." Dallas Morning News Stephen G. Hyslop, an independent scholar, served as editor of a 23-volume series on American Indians for Time-Life Books.

First published in 1892, Early Life Among the Indians is the biography of Benjamin Armstrong, who in 1840 took up his residence in northern Wisconsin. Having learned the Ojibwe language, he became a well-known interpreter. He was known for respecting and documenting the traditional life and culture of the Anishnabe, and became the adopted son of Ke-Che-Waish-Ke, Chief Buffalo, the most respected leader of the Lake Superior bands. In 1852 Armstrong accompanied Great Buffalo and other Ojibwe chiefs to Washington, D.C. to plead against the proposed forced relocation of the Ojibwe west of the Mississippi. A meeting between the chiefs and President Millard Fillmore was a success and brought a reversal of the removal order of 1849.Through his respect and love for the tribes and his connections with Chief Buffalo's family, Armstrong was granted access to leaders of all the Ojibwe bands. Early Life Among the Indians contains his recollections of battles with Sioux adversaries, memoirs of the Sandy Lake tragedy, accounts of the crucial treaty councils that defined modern Ojibwe life, the arrival of miners and loggers in the Ojibwe homelands, and much more about northern Wisconsin in the 19th century. This edition also contains a special message from the 7th generation of Chief Buffalo, his great-granddaughter Sandy Gokee, Anishinaabe kwe, mother, daughter, student, teacher, and water protector living on the shores of Lake Superior.

An amazing account of the survival of an American lady among hostile IndiansThis is a remarkable story of one woman's ordeal and a testament of extraordinary feminine endurance. Mrs Kelly was one of a small party of emigrants who were attacked by a large force of Sioux warriors during which a large proportion of the party were killed. Travelling with her husband close to the Black Hills when the attack occurred, Fanny's husband miraculously effected his escape agonised by the knowledge that his wife and child were, at best, prisoners. Fanny Kelly's captivity lasted for five months. This is her account of that time and of her husbands efforts, in concert with the Iowa Cavalry, to rescue her. A fitting addition to the Leonaur 'Women in Conflict' series available in softcover and hardcover with dust jacket for collectors.
