Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 65, Aston University, language: English, abstract: The slow and deteriorating performance of the electricity power sector over the last few decades triggered the Federal Government of Nigeria to embark on a power sector reform program. This study examines the impact of the power sector reform (restructuring and privatization) on the performance of the electricity sector in Nigeria over the past twenty-five (25) years. Relevant electricity indicators are used to access the performance changes in three significant period; pure state-ownership, transition (restructuring and unbundling) and full privatization of the sector. The study also assesses how the effect of the economic environment, regulatory governance and political climate/effectiveness within the period contributes to the improvements in the electricity sector. The results shows that privatization is associated with improvement in the technical efficiency, access to electricity, electricity consumption per capita and an increase in electricity tariff in the sector. Furthermore, the results highlight the significant relationship between regulatory governance and a robust economy on the performance changes observed in the power industry.

The consumption of rice has been on the increase over the years in Nigeria with local demand exceeding supply leading to a demand-supply gap. Although, local production of rice has been on the increase, it has not been able to meet the demand of households in Nigeria leading to the dependence of the nation on rice importation to meet local demand which constitutes loss of foreign exchange earnings. The continuous importation of foreign rice in Nigeria has brought about changes in households consumption preference for foreign and local rice brands. The subject matter of consumption preference for foreign and locally produced rice as well as the factors that influence households consumption preference for foreign rice over locally produced rice have not been properly addressed. This book provides the much needed empirical information on rice consumption preference in Nigeria for the purpose of making well concerted policies to enhance consumer preference for locally produced rice, stimulate increase in local rice production and save the nation from the continuous loss of foreign exchange incurred in rice importation.

Bangladesh has records of population data for more than 100 years. With the aid of GIS and other analyzing tools such as shift analysis, these data can depict the trend and pattern of the regional disparity of population of Bangladesh. The study also shows that the development parameters such as access to safe water, Sanitation Facility, Electricity Facility etc. collected in the Population censuses can help us to find out the causes behind the regional disparity of Population. To identify the causes of regional disparity and how to make proper policy for the development of rural Bangladesh several other population characteristics such as age-sex composition are described in this book. The spatio-temporal growth of literacy rate is described here and several mapping techniques are taken under consideration for policy making of the development of literacy rate in the country. The huge influx of population in the urban centers can be easily recognized. The trend and pattern of migration flow can provide us a general picture of push factors and pull factors which may guide the planners while offering regional planning rather than rigorous national planning.

This book is based on a research study conducted in the district of Birbhum of West Bengal, India. The study was conducted in four villages from two CD Blocks of the district. The district Birbhum is one of the backward districts of West Bengal and the economy is totally dependent on agriculture and allied activities. The regional disparity in terms of occupation, literacy rate, communication, availability of market and other facilities, soil fertility, irrigation facilities make a huge difference in the changing pattern of consumption expenditure incurred by the sample households. In this book I have tried to explain how a village is changing with time. How villagers became accustomed with the modern amenities and facilities and how they have been changing their livelihood. In some of the cases it is the impact of globalisation and in some of the cases the modern amenities entered in to the villages with their necessity - to run their livelihood properly. These changes even helped to change the rural economy. On the other hand there are some unchanged legacy already exist in the rural areas - like illiteracy, health indicators, gender inequality.

This research is motivated by Thailand's rapidly increasing electricity consumption caused by the country's long-standing above-average economic growth. Consequently, the rising electricity demand can only be satisfied by continuously growing electricity imports and thus creating a significant burden to Thailand's national budget. Further-more, Thailand is heavily dependent on natural gas reserves for electricity generation, however, these are expected to be depleted within only three decades and global price levels for conventional fuels are increasingly volatile with an ascending tendency as well. Therefore, Thailand faces an urgent need to strategically plan for the broad utili-zation of domestic renewable energy resources, which is essential for a more diversi-fied and thus sustainable electricity generation, as well as for the nation's endeavor to become an energy hub within the South East Asian region. Under these circumstances this research conducts a comprehensive literature re-view regarding...

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Orientalism / Sinology - Chinese / China, grade: 2,0, , language: English, abstract: China's economic development has not only led to enormous growth figures, but also to a severe degradation of the environment. Mass-consumption of fossil fuels like oil and coal in China contributed to reaching the level of the largest greenhouse gas emitter worldwide. For the Chinese government to react, it is crucial to take the electricity purchase decisions of households into account to successfully implement energy policies. Hereby, a Chinese social survey shall help to show the effects of economic and environmental factors on the consumers' willingness to pay for the adoption of green electricity: the results of both a Linear Probability Model and a Probit model indicate that environmental factors do not play a crucial role when it comes to the consumers' willingness to pay for higher prices/taxes in order to protect the environment - whereas the economic factor regarding the influence of price levels has a slightly more effective impact. Nonetheless, education and adequate information provision about the merits of green electricity seem to be a prerequisite in order to promote the purchase of renewable electricity.

The current monograph "Post-Conflict Amnesty Polices of Goodluck Jonathan;History/Philosophy" is a contemporary reflection on the true character of Nigeria's politics as reflected in one of the heated topics in global politics, namely, terrorism. Instead of finding a way-forward and acquiring a lasting solution the the amnesty question in the country, the book sees between the deeper lines of colonialism, military rule, and the country's deadly civil war, etc, an emergent philosophy; an inflated oligarchy. In the book's contention, Nigeria's oligarchy has not only been the actual clog on the Jonathan's Amnesty project, for the most part, the constant reliance this philosophy on the pillars of regional agenda, such as, the Northern Agenda, the Igbo Agenda, or the Yoruba Agenda, etc, has been the reason why Nigeria can hardly resolve any of its national problem. From the position of this work, it would seem that two solutions are possible to the failure of the jonathan's amnesty project;- the President must do his best to overcome agenda of Nigeria's oligarchy or seek a higher solution in embracing Genune Dialogue with Separatist Groups in the country.

Cogeneration or combined heat and power is a technology that reduces primary energy consumption and emission of greenhouse gases by making a better utilization of fuels when compared with traditional separated systems. CHP can have an overall efficiency of 70% - 85% compared with the around 51% average overall efficiency of generating electricity and heat by conventional systems. CHP systems make better use of fuels by using recovered heat to drive thermally-activated components. During summer season, recovered thermal energy can be used to drive an absorption chiller to produce cooling. Therefore, the system is able to produce electricity, heating, and cooling. This kind of system is called combined, cooling, heating, and power (CHP or CCHP) systems, also known as trigeneration systems. This study is about the analysis of energy consumption and other benefits that make this technology technically and economically feasible.

It is being increasingly recognized, both on theoretical and empirical grounds, and experiences of the developing countries shows that at least in the initial stages of economic development, considerable regional imbalances in development arises. Reservation have, however, been expressed about the need to take deliberate policy measures to remove these increasing regional disparities in the levels of living. Regional disparity exists in agricultural development in Assam, North East India. The present study measures the extent of regional disparities in agricultural development in Assam and examines the factors responsible for them. This book may help researcher in social sciences to have an idea about regional disparities and to use appropriate tools to quantify such disparities. This book may also help policy-makers to adopt area specific agricultural development strategy so as to secure regional balance in agricultural development and boost up the pace of agricultural and economic development.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,0, University of Bayreuth (RW Fakultät), course: Entwicklungsökonomik, language: English, abstract: This bachelor thesis examines whether foreign aid to the energy sector has a significant impact on the development of a country's electricity sector by analysing the impact of aid disbursements to the energy sector on three different sector-specific outcome indicators in a fixed effects model. Besides, as heterogeneity of aid recipients might influence the effect, different regressions are run for low income, lower middle income and upper middle income countries. Results indicate that foreign aid to the energy sector affects electricity output positively and significantly, while not having an impact on generation capacity. The impact on electricity consumption per capita remains unclear. Furthermore, it seems to work more effectively in richer countries. This is robust to a set of sensitivity tests. Thus, the results emphasize the importance of disaggregating aid flows and the use of sector specific outcome variables in order to measure the impact of foreign aid.

The issue of providing relevant information for decision making in the public sector of emerging economies has taken the front burner. Nigeria has announced its plan to move from the cash basis to the accrual basis in the next few years.Discordant notes have been sounded on whether Nigeria needs to transmute to the accrual based model given the relative simplicity of the cash basis accounting currently in use in Nigeria's public sector and given the enormous cost involved in moving to the accrual system.Opinion of Auditors, Accountants and Accounting Academics were sought as key stakeholders on the issue using a survey research design. There were overwhelming support for adoption of accrual accounting model in the public sector of Nigeria. The major reason for the support is that it will make for better decision making because of better qualitative data.

Over the years, theatre designers and artists in Nigeria have been dependent on imported colourants, despite the availability of local raw materials, which could be processed to obtain these colourants. This book discusses the possibility of exploring local alternatives by way of sourcing for colour-producing substances in parts of Nigeria, refining and putting them to use in stage scenery, costume and make-up. This study has ascertained that raw colour pigments are available in ample quantity in Nigeria, enough to sustain commercial colour production, and that the demand for colourants in Nigeria and the cost are high. This work should therefore be valuable to stakeholders in colour manufacturing, trade and usage - individuals, entrepreneurs, organizations and government who may wish to explore the opportunities in the colour-manufacturing sector for the sustenance and development of scenography and visual arts in Nigeria. Researchers studying artistic production materials, and those reviewing the social, economic and the cultural circumstances of art practice in Nigeria would find this work useful.

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 6.0 , University of Lausanne, 156 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The Swiss electricity market has been facing structural changes in recent years due to market deregulation activities. This development has been accompanied by the emergence of spot markets where electricity is traded between producer and purchaser. Since the price charged to the end-customer turns out to be more exposed to market prices of electricity, the need forderivatives with a risk management purpose arises. A more recent asset class such as structured products may be used as a risk management tool. This paper focuses on the pricing of various structured products with the Swiss energy price indices as an underlying.Since electricity has particular features that result in a peculiar stochastic process, the pricing of electricity derivatives cannot rely on traditional pricing formulas that have been developed for equity or commodity underlyings. Rather, there is a need for a dynamic model that captures the unique characteristics of electricity. In this paper, a new jump diffusion process isproposed and estimated that is able to incorporate the Swiss electricity price properties.Building on this model, a Monte Carlo simulation is applied that allows one to price differing electricity derivatives that are embedded in structured products. This work examines the subtle ways the church and traditional religion in southwestern Nigeria relate. It shows that contrary to earlier opinion that Christianity and Traditional Religion do not have areas of relatedness, the Christian Religion in Nigeria is a product of the people's culture and worldview. Certain elements used in African Traditional Religion in Christ Apostolic Church shows that Traditional Religion and Christianity especially in Southwestern Nigeria in Christ Apostolic Church have their meeting points and they engage meaningfully when properly used. The appropriation of some natural and synthetic elements in African Traditional Religion and the church shows that there is a link between the two. The concepts of spiritual manipulation and protection enhancement are evident in the two religions.

Indian agriculture is undoubtedly characterized by a very wide diversity in technology employed and there are still past areas covered by traditional agricultural practices with single cropping pattern. Similarly, there are relatively modern and mechanized operations in many states of the country, which also rely on substantial use of fertilizers, pesticides and vast quantities of water. It is seen that the Green revolution took place in Indian agriculture in 1966 made a breakthrough in the practices of agriculture. It made a noticeable shift from area expansion to yield improvement, wherever possible, in order to the meet the growing demand for agricultural products, particularly food. As a consequence of this change, the energy consumption in agricultural sector has increased the size of output. It is pertinent to note that the structure of energy consumption has also changed substantially with a huge shift from animal and human labour towards tractor for farming operations, and electricity and diesel are largely used for groundwater irrigation.

Globally, freshwater ecosystems are considered to be under severe threat from human pressure and climate change (Vörösmarty et al., 2010). Malmqvist and Rundle (2002) suggest that running water is the most impacted upon ecosystem on Earth due to being surrounded by dense human settlements and exploited for domestic and industrial water supply, irrigation, electricity generation and waste disposal. For example, the progressive over-exploitation of surface water resources for irrigation and urban uses in the Colorado River Basin has resulted most years in no runoff reaching the river's delta (Gleick, 2003). [...] Hereafter, natural and anthropogenic driving forces will be referred to as global and regional driving forces, respectively. The future effects of these forces up to the 2050s will be assessed in quantitative scenarios implemented in a hydrological model. It is believed that using this nomenclature (i.e. global and regional instead of natural and anthropogenic) better reflects considered environmental stressors, since global-scale driving forces will include not only climatic change but also changes in CO2, atmospheric carbon dioxide and plant physiological parameters, whereas regional-scale driving forces will include changes in land use, agriculture development and agricultural water management. Hence, the difference is that the first group of driving forces acts globally and independently on the study area, whereas the second group includes factors that are spec...

Decades of irresponsible oil exploitation in the Niger Delta have caused a water and air pollution which does not have many comparisons anywhere else. In an already fragile country as Nigeria, characterised by weak democratic institutions and poor economic governance, this situation has led to increasing discontent and violence towards both the government and the oil multinationals. These two actors co-operate for the maximisation of oil profits and revenues while, at the same time, excluding local host communities from the participation in the oil development projects, preventing them from achieving a sustainable development, violating their human rights, and compromising their livelihoods. This book analyses the legal framework of Nigeria in the oil sector and the peculiarities of the country in order to provide a critical overview of the issues, demonstrating that the amendment of the domestic Acts dealing with the topic, as well as the remediation to the damages caused by oil multinationals, are no longer deferrable. The final aim is to suggest a pattern to sustainable oil development which, by means of applying the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility, would help to quell the conflict, to improve the local people's standards of life, and to make Nigeria emerge as a socio-environmentally responsible African resource-rich country.

This volume of essays on public policy challenges in the Buhari-led Nigeria is a child of necessity. In 2015 and sixteen years after the PDP assumed the leadership reins in Nigeria, it was evident to all, that Nigeria was not enjoying the best form of governance and purposeful leadership. The strength of government was absolutely lacking. Enter 2015 and the grand alliance and vision of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which claimed to be the only credible alternative capable of upending the PDP and providing Nigeria the much leadership change it desired. Hope about Nigeria's prospects soared with the election of President Muhammadu Buhari. The hope was well founded: it reflected the high expectations generated both by the smooth transfer of power from the Jonathan administration, itself a sign of a maturing democracy, and by the scintillating campaign by candidate Buhari. It did not take long before the Buhari administration confronted the political reality of governance. The governance reality that the Buhari administration faced on assuming the reins of power consisted of his own campaign promises (tackling insecurity, combating corruption, and growing the economy -- with emphasis on reducing unemployment and diversifying the economy); unanticipated crises (resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta and onset of recession); and self-inflicted injuries (delayed appointment of his cabinet, policy somersaults on foreign exchange policy, and poor management of the reces...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1 (A), Vienna University of Economics and Business (New Media Lab), course: Baccalaureut Work, language: English, abstract: The liberalization of the European electricity market is supposed to reduce electricity prices by opening up to competition and by promoting integration of the common European market. Deregulation allows energy consumers to choose their electric energy supplier and therefore dissolves electric utility monopolies. The resulting re-regulation and restructuring of the electricity industry has created oppor-tunities and challenges that need to be addressed to ensure long-term capacity sustainability. The promise and benefit expectations of electricity market liberalization may need to be tempered by the reality of the process. Market liberalization of the electricity supply sector depends on many different factors and boundary conditions in the EU. In order to analyze these issues, we will use Austria as an example showing the development in liberalization, deregulation, and even re-regulation processes and the impact on the industry structure and final consumer pricing. Given the industry structure, incentives to invest in the Austrian transmission and distribution networks remain to be established. We will show that high inflexible taxes and monopoly protected transmission costs, both together account for 80% of the price of electricity. Moreover, only 20% of the electrici...

The study generate serious academic interest in evolving new methods and strategies needed in developing non-oil exports for higher productivity and efficient performance which in the long run will result to economic growth and development. Hence it evaluates the federal government incentives and schemes in promoting non-oil export trade promotion in Nigeria with focus on the immense derivable benefits from engaging in non-oil export and the resulting economic growth in Nigeria at aggregate level which are associated with the current international trends in global trade liberation. Virtually all the nations' foreign exchange was obtained from the exportation of oil products due to the economic boom in 1970s. This paper studies the relationship between electricity consumption per person and income (measured as GDP per capita in Current US$ and GNI per capita in PPP). It follows the latest methodology researched in the literature and tests for distribution equality, correlation, outlier detection, fixed effects and the addition of new variables. An inverted U-relationship could be found for GNI per capita in all the tests, but not for GDP per capita in all specifications. Data was subject to outlier detection and adjustments for fixed effects for both cross-section and period. Furthermore alternative specifications were analyzed, illustrating how the inverted U- relationship can be explained with the addition of GNI per capita into the general model up to the fourth power without losing its shape, showing a turning point in electricity consumption at a level of $38,630, with a 95% confidence interval of ±$123.
