The semantic approach to data storage, management and extraction is a promising concept that has constantly been gaining importance during the past years. However, the visualization of semantic data systems as well as the functionalities of their interfaces still contain some obstacles for both, the interaction designer and the interacting user. In order to accommodate to those obstacles, the interaction designer has to come up with an intuitive and efficient user interface design, introducing inexperienced users to data representation and extraction in a semantic environment. The intention of this work is to provide an overview over the disciplines of Human Computer Interaction and Interaction Design, with the intention to mediate the essential human-based and technical processes influencing the design of interaction, with a focus on the organisation and representation of unstructured, semantically rich data.

Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Communications - Methods and Research Logic, grade: B, Ottawa University, course: Qualitative Research Methods, language: English, abstract: This report looks at research methods including the debate between qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, and relates these methodologies to the healthcare field in terms of providing cost effective solutions to healthcare problems like Medicare and other problems. The difference between qualitative and quantitative research approaches is also highlighted in the current report in the relationship between different paradigms of inquiry and definitions of paradigms. The features of logical positivism and phenomenology are therefore also used in approximate relativity to quantitative and qualitative methods, with the assumption being that qualitative methods are more reflective of the subjective approach of phenomenology. However, the report is also open to other definitions of paradigm and category in specific terms of healthcare research topics and new definitions of both types of research approach. "There is no universally accepted definition of qualitative research, because it is a field of enquiry rather than a single entity. About half of total population lives in public housing in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Housing Authority is committed to develop a highly interacted community and social network by improving the layout-design of public housing estates over decades. However, research suggests that the community interaction in housing estates in Hong Kong has been declining day by day. This study focuses on public space focusing on outdoor communal spaces in public housing layouts of different prototypes and periods. Attributes of public spaces, that impact on neighborly interaction within estates in Hong Kong, have been highlighted for investigation here. This monograph sequentially aims to look into the following research questions - How does a layout design influence public spaces and impact on neighborly interaction? What makes a space successful to the people of different groups, ages, and interests? The answers of these questions would help the design-professionals and the city-authorities to shed some light on public spaces in dealing with new and existing housing layouts at the neighborhood level in Hong Kong as well as in the world.

Future progress in genetic research and technologies is likely to further increase the availability of interactive personal genomic information to non-experts. This trend raises technological, ethical, and regulatory concerns related to how people make sense of, engage with, and rely on their personal genomic data. Such concerns are not only of paramount importance for health professionals and policy makers, but are also a pressing issue for human-computer interaction (HCI) research. HCI tools, methods and practices can help make genomic information more accessible and understandable to non-experts. This authors make the argument that the complexity, importance, and personal relevance of this type of information makes understanding, informing, and empowering non-experts’ interaction with personal genomics a key challenge that lies ahead for the HCI community. This monograph explores the roles HCI can play in helping non-experts contribute, understand, engage with, and share their personal genomic information. It is also a call to action for those that are interested in the intersection of personal informatics and HCI, and, more broadly, in facilitating non-expert interaction with large amounts of complex, personal and uncertain information.

Dialogue management technology has developed rapidly over the years resulting in real-time applications like telephony directories, timetable enquiries, and in-car applications. However, the current technology is still largely based on models that use rigid command language type interactions, and the users need to adapt their human communication strategies to the needs of the technology. As an increasing number of interactive ubiquitous applications will appear, challenges for interaction technology concern especially natural, more human-friendly communication. Recent research has focused on developing speech-based interactive systems that aim to increase the system’s communicative competence. By including aspects of interaction beyond simple speech recognition and question-answer based interaction, applications with more conversational interfaces have become possible. New dialogue management technology needs to address the challenges in human-technology interaction, so that smart environments should not only enable user-controlled command interfaces but equip applications with a capability that affords easy and friendly interactions with the user. Dialogue Modelling: Speech Interaction and Rational Agents provides an overview of the current dialogue technology and research trends in spoken dialogue systems, presenting a coherent perspective of AI-based cooperative interaction management. The book complements existing research regarding human-computer interfaces, speech and language technology, and communication studies in general, bringing different view-points together and integrating them into a single point of reference. This book explores the issue of research methods in interlanguage pragmatics. Particularly, it examines the task effect of two different elicitation instruments, namely open role-plays and interactive written discourse completion tasks/tests (DCTs), and the potential of retrospective verbal reports in combination with the aforementioned instruments. The distinguishing feature of the study is using two elicitation methods which are designed from an interactive perspective. Findings from this study indicate that the interactive nature of the instruments seems to positively affect participants' elicitation of apologies since the quantity and the quality of the data collected exhibits a similar pattern across the two research methods. Furthermore, in this study, retrospective verbal reports appear to be instrumental in gathering information about participants' pragmatic production. Finally, the book ends with a discussion of some future research directions in the field of pragmatic testing.

Constructive Dialogue Modelling: Presents a guide to spoken dialogue technology and current research trends. Provides an overview of human factors in dialogue systems and delivers a new metaphor for human-computer interaction and computer as agent. Explains the architecture of dialogue systems using examples from systems such as Interact and DUMAS Offers a comprehensive overview of original research into the new trends in speech dialogue technology in light of innovations such as ubiquitous computing. This book will provide essential reading for industrial designers and interface engineers, university researchers and teachers, computer scientists, human communication researchers, speech and language technologists, cognitive engineers/cognitive scientists, as well as social and media researchers, and psychologists. Advanced students and researchers in computer science, speech and language technologies, psychology and communication research will find this text of interest.
