This research used an integrated approach to investigate the research participants’ attitudes to standard Arabic, colloquial Arabic and English, and also to examine how the participants actually used these language varieties. In addition, the study aimed to gain an insight into the factors behind such attitudes. The integrated design of the research included a questionnaire to investigate participants’ conscious attitudes, a matched guise test to examine their subconscious attitudes, and a focus group protocol to examine the factors behind these attitudes. The research population was based on a random cluster sample of Saudi male undergraduate students at King Saud University. About 260 students took part in the questionnaire and the matched guise test and 17 participants were involved in the focus group protocol. The results of the investigation into the participants’ conscious and subconscious attitudes have implications for language planning in Saudi Arabia.

Master's Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, Birkbeck, University of London, language: English, abstract: AbstractGiven the existing relations between language attitudes and linguistic competence, and places in the bilingual context of the Republic of Ireland (Irish/English) the goal of the present study is twofold: first, attitudes towards the Irish language are described, and second, variables that can explain such attitudes are studied. These include: family language, linguistic proficiency in Irish, residence (Gaeltacht vs. Galltacht), cultural identity, socio-educational background and gender. In addition, attitudes towards Irish and English will be compared. A questionnaire that had been successfully used in other areas was adapted and used in a sample of 62 adult speakers of Irish, about half of them (N=27) coming from traditionally Irish-speaking areas, or Gaeltacht, and the other half (N=35) coming from English-speaking areas, or Galltacht. 33 females and 29 males took part in the study. The mean age was M=35.5, SD=10.35. All participants had undergone secondary education in the Republic of Ireland. Globally, results show neutral attitudes towards Irish and somewhat unfavourable attitudes towards English. The book introduces the definitions of attitudes and epistemology and their related theories. Further, it provides an investigation on attitudes toward computer and internet usage as function of gender, field of study, ethnicity and age. Furthermore, it explores the relationship between attitudes toward ICT and epistemological beliefs among postgraduate students in Malaysian context. This book also, provides empirical evidences related to the relationships between attitudes toward ICT usage and epistemological construct and other demographical variables. Results reveal that: (1) participants have a high level perception of the usefulness and their control of the computer and Internet, (2) no significant differences were found between participants’ attitudes toward the Internet and computer related with gender, field of study, and ethnicity, (3) postgraduate student’s attitudes toward computer and Internet usage are age related, and (4) the findings affirm that the postgraduate students’ attitudes toward the Internet and computer usage are associated with their epistemological beliefs. Reading attitude is an integral part of the development and use of lifelong reading skills. This study is very extensive. It had covered all points connected to reading attitudes and study habits of students, even; it also attempted to compare reading attitudes and study habits of male to female students. Besides, it also addressed the barriers that hinder reading attitudes and impacts of poor and good reading attitudes on performances and enhancement of professional development. The results of the study clearly showed that most of the students (81.43%, n = 70) who involved in this study had positive attitudes towards literatures; on the contrary some students (18.57%, n = 70) under this study showed negative reading attitudes towards literatures. However, the study habits of students under this study were extensive that is studying with no selectivity of contents of the literatures and rests in between secessions of studying, hence, they did not score good results. When students are actually studying, they should follow the SQ3R methods. Students should rehearse what they have studied before they get sleeping.

Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, Urmia University (International Students Admission Department), course: TEFL, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between MA English students' personality traits (PT) and their attitudes toward university teachers' code switching (CS) in Urmia, Iran. In addition to that purpose, the correlation between each sub-scale of PT, including extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience, and teachers' CS is analyzed. Finally, the overall attitudes of MA TEFL English students toward CS behavior are discussed, as well. To this end, 150 MA English students (70 males and 80 females) from State and Azad universities of Urmia City participated in this study. Two instruments were used for data collection: In order to measure students' PT, the Big Five Inventory designed by John & Srivastava, 1999, was administered. Secondly, to measure students' attitudes toward teachers' CS, the questionnaire developed by Mingfa Yoa (2011) was used. According to the results, no significant relationship was found between the PT of students and their attitudes toward teachers' CS. Le questionnaire Aging Sexuality Knowledge and Attitudes Scale (ASKAS, White, 1982) fut utilisé afin d'évaluer les connaissances et les attitudes des professionnels de santé face à la sexualité des personnes âgées.

The rapid growth of the Hispanic population in the United States and indications of underutilization of menal health care services by this ethnic minority, underscores the need for a reliable instrument to assess the attitudes toward seeking psychotherapy among Hispanics. Fisher and Turner developed in 1970 the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale (ATP) which has become one of the most widely used instruments to measure attitudes toward psychotherapy. However, the ATP was developed and standardized using mainly Caucasian participants. The principal aim of this work was to explore the usefulness of the ATP for Hispanic populations. A factorial analysis of the ATP using answers from 266 Hispanic respondents obtained a factor solution that partially followed the theoretical framework of Fisher and Turner; however, the results also suggested the ATP could be improved to measure attitudes toward psychotherapy more accurately among Hispanics. A second aim of this work was to analyze the effect of income, acculturation, prior exposure to psychotherapy, and gender as predictors of attitudes toward seeking psychological help.

The link between the political attitudes of individuals and the value given to health privacy is largely unknown. This study introduces the Health Privacy and Political Attitudes Survey. Results: most political attitudes are not a good predictor of ideas on health privacy, but authoritarian attitudes strengthen the trust in (government regulated) electronic records. Weak evidence suggests that women are more enthusiastic about the EPR. Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: This thesis resolves the need for an industry award for service excellence in retailing, based on a comprehensive framework to foster management quality. A service excellence framework is developed and the design for a new service excellence award is proposed. The proposed framework is based on the Industrial Excellence Award. In addition to the original four fundamental processes a fifth component is introduced: the customer. To complete the framework, the seven components of management quality known from the IEA are adopted. This framework is the structure for the self-assessment questionnaire that will be the core of the new „Best Retailer” service excellence award. Through an extensive literature review, success factors and empirically tested items for questionnaires were identified and assigned to the corresponding sections in the questionnaire. The result is a collection of questions that - if appropriately considered by management – can help introducing service excellence in the retailing industry. The modus operandi of a possible future award competition is suggested to stay close the example of the IEA in order to leverage the existing brand. This should help to popularize the new award, to create outstanding showcases quickly, and to disseminate excellent management quality in the industry. In the U.S., minority students lag behind their White and Asian counterparts academically at all levels of the educational structure. Research has shown that the perceptions and attitudes teachers hold regarding their students can have a significant impact on their students' performance and achievement. Studies have found that teachers often carry negative stereotypes regarding non-Asian minority students, which seem to contribute to the failure and discouragement amongst these students. This research found that non-education majors had significantly higher, or more positive, affective racial attitudes than education majors. Additionally, students with higher aptitudes, as measured by ACT or SAT score, reported higher, or more positive, affective attitudes than those with lower aptitudes, and students who had never taken an education course reported higher, or more positive, affective racial attitudes than students who had taken education courses. Educational professionals should re-evaluate the current diversity education requirements and opportunities at both the university and school district levels.

The students were surveyed via questionnaire that was developed based on validated research instruments from prior studies in the field. Data was analyzed integrating independent variables such as students' gender, physical education grade, grade point average, body mass index, socioeconomic status, type of school, citizenship, and the exercise and physical activity behavior of students, their parents and their peers.
