The city of Barcelona is considered the essence of Modernism, and certainly it is where the movement left the greatest number of its architectural jewels, many of them widely known. There are, however, pertaining to this historical period other less well-known works that are authentic gems, highly evocative and attractive. This book proposes a discovery of this other Modernist treasure - works that shine with a light of their own, encrusted in the estimable legacy of this artistic movement. "Caudi and Modernism in Barcelona" is the third volume in a collection dealing with this artistic current that spread throughout Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, leaving its indelible mark on all areas of aesthetic manifestation. As with the previous volumes, this work is an indispensable tool for visitors with the curiosity and desire to discover more about this movement that brought a new way of understanding architecture and the arts in general. Over 150 colour photographs produced for this book and maps that pinpoint the locations lead readers out of the centre of Barcelona, guiding them through other areas of the city to seek out buildings that form an inherent part of the legacy of Modernist architecture. Moreover, the book includes two special sections dedicated to stained glass and furnishings. These two chapters are a tribute to the excellence of the artists and craftsmen who complement the great names of Modernist architecture, and who with their work contributed to the diffusion and great splendour of a unique movement in the history of architecture and art.

The years from 1925 to 1965 were marked by an optimistic belief that the new technologies of industrialization, spread by applying rational ideas to architecture and urbanism, would produce a qualitatively better world. This "Project of Modernity" was concerned with social agenda as well as form, an aspect that is now sometimes forgotten. The expressions of modern architecture were characterized by a number of different twentieth-century movements, dominated by the International Style. In the 1920s several strands of modernism - Expressionism, Futurism, Functionalism, to name only three of the "isms" - converged into an approach to architecture that is termed internationalist. It was an approach that was global not only in its aspirations and its concerns but also in the presentation of its architecture.

The buildings burned in our memories, which to us represent the spirit of fifties and sixties architectural design, were those whose pictures were widely published in magazines and books; but what about those that got lost in the process, hardly or never appearing in publication? The exchange of visual information is crucial to the development, evolution, and promotion of architectural movements. If a building is not widely seen, its photograph rarely or never published, it simply does not enter into architectural discourse. Many buildings photographed by Julius Shulman suffered this fate, their images falling into oblivion. With this book, TASCHEN brings them to light, paying homage to California Modernism in all its forms. The abandoned files of Julius Shulman show us another side of Modernism that has stayed quiet for so many years. Bringing together nearly 250 forgotten masterpieces, Modernism Rediscovered pays tribute to these lesser known yet outstanding contributions to the modern architectural movement. It's like sneaking into a private history, into homes that have rarely been seen and hardly appreciated as of yet. About the photographer: A resident of Los Angeles since 1920, Julius Shulman documented modernist architecture in Southern California and across the globe for nearly eight decades. His images of Pierre Koenig's Case Study House No. 22 (1960) in Los Angeles and Richard J. Neutra's Kaufmann House (1947) in Palm Springs are among the most recognizable and iconic architectural photographs of the 20th century. Shulman's interest in photography developed into a career when he photographed Neutra's Kun Residence in Los Angeles with his Kodak Vestpocket camera in 1936. Neutra admired young Shulman's images and continued to commission his work. Other leading architects of the time followed suit, as did hundreds of magazines, newspapers, and book publishers. Shulman's numerous awards include the Architectural Photography Medal from the American Institute of Architects (1969), a lifetime achievement award from the International Center of Photography in New York (1998), and honorary doctorates from various academic institutions. He died on July 15, 2009 at the age of 98. About the author: Pierluigi Serraino is a practicing architect resident in the San Francisco Bay Area. "Each age must create its own architecture out of its own technology and one which is expressive of its own Zeitgeist-the spirit of the time." - Eero Saarinen Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) was one of the 20th century's great visionaries, both in the fields of furniture design (he created the ubiquitous Knoll "Tulip" chairs and tables, for example) and in architecture. Among his greatest accomplishments are monuments that shaped architecture in postwar America and became icons in themselves: Washington D.C.'s Dulles International Airport, the very sculptural and fluid TWA terminal at JFK Airport in New York, and the 630 ft (192m) high Gateway Arch of St. Louis, Missouri. Marrying curves and dynamic forms with a Modernist aesthetic, he brought a whole new dimension to architecture. In the software development life cycle, changes are inevitable. The software system evolves as changes in the environment and requirements are incorporated in the system. If these changes are not managed properly, the architecture of the software deteriorates and leads to architecture erosion. This study is an effort to address the problem of architecture erosion and to keep the software architecture live and up to date. In this study we propose a method to minimize or avoid architecture erosion. It is based on the concept of architecture vision that is the ideal representation of the architecture of the software in hand. All the activities of this method revolve around the efforts to keep the architecture of the software aligned with an architecture vision. The iterative nature of the method and synchronization of the implemented architecture with the architecture vision helps to detect and reduce architecture erosion. This method does not conflict with or replaces any development or management process or method (like RUP, agile, water fall etc), but exists parallel to them.

The first mass killings of the Romanian Holocaust in late June to early July 1941 brutally claimed thousands of victims and marked the beginning of the government's plan to "cleanse the land" of Jews. Moreover, of all the Third Reich's allies, only Romania undertook its genocide campaign without the intervention of Himmler's SS. In The Origins and Onset of the Romanian Holocaust, author Henry Eaton traces the historical path to this tragedy by examining both Romania's antisemitic history and looking at the initial mass killings in detail. First, Eaton traces the roots of the Romanian government's decision to exterminate Jews in Romania and in its annexed areas through its long and often violent antisemitic past. While the decision to target the Jews might have been ordered by dictator Ion Antonescu and his top civil and military officials, Eaton argues that it found its basis in an entrenched cultural abuse of Jews dating back to the nineteenth century. In the second section, Eaton analyzes the Romanian government's first killing operations: the execution of 311 Jewish men, women, and children at Stânca Rosnovanu by men of the Romanian 6th Cavalry Regiment; the great pogrom in the city of Iasi triggered by agents of the government's intelligence service; and the two "death trains" in which some 2,700 pogrom survivors perished in freight cars turned into ovens by the summer heat. In the final chapters, Eaton examines the victims and ...

In this fundamental rethinking of the rise of modernism from its beginnings in the Impressionist movement, Robert Jensen reveals that market discourses were pervasive in the ideological defense of modernism from its very inception and that the avant-garde actually thrived on the commercial appeal of anti-commercialism at the turn of the century. The commercial success of modernism, he argues, depended greatly on possession of historical legitimacy. The very development of modern art was inseparable from the commercialism many of its proponents sought to transcend. Here Jensen explores the economic, aesthetic, institutional, and ideological factors that led to its dominance in the international art world by the early 1900s. He emphasizes the role of the emerging dealer/gallery market and of modernist art historiographies in evaluating modern art and legitimizing it through the formation of a canon of modernist masters. In describing the canon-building of modern dealerships, Jensen considers the new "ideological dealer" and explores the commercial construction of artistic identity through such rhetorical concepts as temperament and "independent art" and through such institutional structures as the retrospective. His inquiries into the fate of the juste milieu, a group of dissidents who saw themselves as "true heirs" of Impressionism, and his look at a new form of art history emerging in Germany further expose a linear, dealer- oriented history of moderni...

For this purpose, this research first provides a general overview to the discussion and interpretations of human values in general and specifically across different fields like philosophy, economic, science, and others. This discussion is then followed by a detailed examining of the state of value in architecture. In doing so, this research reveals the connection between values and architecture and identifies different types of design values that drive architecture. Antoine Picon Ornament. The Politics of Architecture and Subjectivity

3563.79 руб.
Once condemned by Modernism and compared to a ‘crime’ by Adolf Loos, ornament has made a spectacular return in contemporary architecture. This is typified by the works of well-known architects such as Herzog & de Meuron, Sauerbruch Hutton, Farshid Moussavi Architecture and OMA. There is no doubt that these new ornamental tendencies are inseparable from innovations in computer technology. The proliferation of developments in design software has enabled architects to experiment afresh with texture, colour, pattern and topology. Though inextricably linked with digital tools and culture, Antoine Picon argues that some significant traits in ornament persist from earlier Western architectural traditions. These he defines as the ‘subjective’ – the human interaction that ornament requires in both its production and its reception – and the political. Contrary to the message conveyed by the founding fathers of modern architecture, traditional ornament was not meant only for pleasure. It conveyed vital information about the designation of buildings as well as about the rank of their owners. As such, it participated in the expression of social values, hierarchies and order. By bringing previous traditions in ornament under scrutiny, Picon makes us question the political issues at stake in today’s ornamental revival. What does it tell us about present-day culture? Why are we presently so fearful of meaning in architecture? Could it be that by steering so vehemently away from symbolism, contemporary architecture is evading any explicit contribution to collective values?

From the hard-boiled detective stories of Dashiell Hammett to the novels of Claude McKay, The Word on the Streets examines a group of writers whose experimentation with the vernacular argues for a rethinking of American modernism--one that cuts across traditional boundaries of class, race, and ethnicity. The dawn of the modernist era witnessed a transformation of popular writing that demonstrated an experimental practice rooted in the language of the streets. Emerging alongside more recognized strands of literary modernism, the vernacular modernism these writers exhibited lays bare the aesthetic experiments inherent in American working-class and ethnic language, forging an alternative pathway for American modernist practice.Brooks Hefner shows how writers across a variety of popular genres--from Gertrude Stein and Williams Faulkner to humorist Anita Loos and ethnic memoirist Anzia Yezierska--employed street slang to mount their own critique of genteel realism and its classist emphasis on dialect hierarchies, the result of which was a form of American experimental writing that resonated powerfully across the American cultural landscape of the 1910s and 1920s.

Hungary's legacy of historic and modernist buildings rivals that of any country in Eastern or Western Europe. This comprehensive survey of Hungarian architecture from Roman times to the present, the first to be published in English, makes that case abundantly clear. But to appreciate the architectural history of this Central European country, it is necessary to understand architectural solutions indigenous to the Central European region as a whole. This book is both a study of the relationship between Hungary's own architecture and history, and an introduction to the larger field of Central European architecture. The authors, all leading Hungarian architectural historians with access to archives unavailable to Western scholars, provide insight into the special significance that political changes in Hungary had in the shaping of its architecture. They describe the relation of Hungarian architecture to the other arts, the assimilation of outside influences, and the search for an authentic national expression. The authors cover the entire range of Hungarian architecture - including public, private, ecclesiastical, and governmental - as well as engineering, city planning, and technological advances. They also discuss the changing roles of patrons and guilds, and the contribution of architectural publications and education to the Hungarian architectural profession. Perhaps most revealing to Western readers are the illustrations and line drawings, which document one of the most neg...

A fantastic collection of Soviet Asian architecture, many photographed here for the first time Soviet Asia explores the Soviet modernist architecture of Central Asia. Italian photographers Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego crossed the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, documenting buildings constructed from the 1950s until the fall of the USSR. The resulting images showcase the majestic, largely unknown, modernist buildings of the region. Museums, housing complexes, universities, circuses, ritual palaces - all were constructed using a composite aesthetic. Influenced by Persian and Islamic architecture, pattern and mosaic motifs articulated a connection with Central Asia. Grey concrete slabs were juxtaposed with colourful tiling and rectilinear shapes broken by ornate curved forms: the brutal designs normally associated with Soviet-era architecture were reconstructed with Eastern characteristics. Many of the buildings shown in Soviet Asia are recorded here for the first time, making this book an important document, as despite the recent revival of interest in Brutalist and Modernist architecture, a number of them remain under threat of demolition. The publication includes two contextual essays, one by Alessandro De Magistris (architect and History of Architecture professor, University of Milan, contributor to the book Vertical Moscow) and the other by Marco Buttino (Modern and Urban History professor, University of Turin, specializing in the history of social change in the USSR).

Highly illustrated, the book covers architecture and design in North Africa, the Levant, the Gulf, and Turkey, Iran and Iraq.

Modernism London Style: The Art Deco Heritage

In the 1920s, London was a city on the cusp of change. Just as dance halls and jazz-age decadence displaced wartime austerity, a new generation of artists and designers sought to enliven the city’s architecture, erecting dazzling buildings in the emerging art deco style. In contrast with the aging Victorian structures that dotted the city, these bright and colorful buildings—from the Hoover factory to the Ideal House by Raymond Hood, who later designed New York’s Rockefeller Center—communicated the city’s aspirations as a thriving, modern metropolis. In the decades since, London’s art deco buildings have lost none of their appeal. Millions of visitors gaze up at the headquarters of the Daily Telegraph and the nearby Daily Express, take in the elegance of Eltham Palace, or sip a martini at the Savoy. The city’s most popular art deco attraction, however, is the London Underground, which boasts a series of art deco and modernist stations, designed throughout the 1920s and ’30s by noted architect Charles Holden. In Modernism London Style, architectural historian Christoph Rauhut, with the help of three hundred photographs by Niels Lehmann, captures the architectural art deco heritage of London in a thrilling photographic tour. A portrait of the city during the interwar years, it chronicles the creativity of the artists and designers of the period—and the currents in the city’s culture that helped shape their work.Insightful essays and an introduction by architecture scholar Adam C...

This collection, edited by Fernando Luiz Lara and Silvana Romano Santos, brings together articles that are somehowrelated to a common nodule, that I believe was identified few years ago, and points to a kind of birth mark of Brazilian’s architectural culture. The common nodule being the belief (that houses texts, narratives and speeches of the decades of 1920 to 1940) in an alternative project of modern action – where culture and nature have main roles –, that due its discursive efficiency metamorphoses itself in real characteristics of Brazilian modern architecture. In synthesis, the intellectual artifices turn themselves in an organic character. Thus, the understanding of the discursive assembly of Brazilian modern is, at the same time, the understanding of its efficiency in the constitution of an art and of an architecture with its own characteristics. The comprehension of such historic phenomena happens, therefore, through a speech that describes, constitutes and legitimizes itself. Finally, it won’t be useless to mention that some of the selected articles are nothing more than simple registers of the architectural culture – something with partial and provisional analysis about architecture’s teaching, critic or historiography –, which we must read with the same unpretentiousness that motivated them.

The latest architecture and design of restaurants and bars, from L.A. to Tokyo, is the focus of this book. Whether the challenge is merely placing furniture in a simple space, or an ambitious structural project, restaurants and bars are the sites of our most expressive architecture; more ephemeral than larger facilities or entire buildings, they are more apt to capture the mood of the times. From a skyscraper rooftop in Bangkok to a beachfront in Brazil, here are places where design, architecture, food and drink come together in inspiring combinations ranging from minimalist to extravagantly baroque. Designed and conceived like the enormously successful Architecture Now! books, this volume identifies the current trends bringing architecture and design together in new and exciting ways. Patrik Schumacher The Autopoiesis of Architecture, Volume II. A New Agenda for Architecture

2213.51 руб.
This is the second part of a major theoretical work by Patrik Schumacher, which outlines how the discipline of architecture should be understood as its own distinct system of communication. Autopoeisis comes from the Greek and means literally self-production; it was first adopted in biology in the 1970s to describe the essential characteristics of life as a circular self-organizing system and has since been transposed into a theory of social systems. This new approach offers architecture an arsenal of general comparative concepts. It allows architecture to be understood as a distinct discipline, which can be analyzed in elaborate detail while at the same time offering insightful comparisons with other subject areas, such as art, science and political discourse. On the basis of such comparisons the book insists on the necessity of disciplinary autonomy and argues for a sharp demarcation of design from both art and engineering. Schumacher accordingly argues controversially that design as a discipline has its own sui generis intelligence – with its own internal logic, reach and limitations. Whereas the first volume provides the theoretical groundwork for Schumacher’s ideas – focusing on architecture as an autopoeitic system, with its own theory, history, medium and its unique societal function – the second volume addresses the specific, contemporary challenges and tasks that architecture faces. It formulates these tasks, looking specifically at how architecture is seeking to organize and articulate the complexity of post-fordist network society. The volume explicitly addresses how current architecture can upgrade its design methodology in the face of an increasingly demanding task environment, characterized by both complexity and novelty. Architecture’s specific role within contemporary society is explained and its relationship to politics is clarified. Finally, the new, global style of Parametricism is introduced and theoretically grounded.

It aims to construct shared architectural traits and patterns alongwith the derivative relationships between Indian and Asian Buddhist monuments. It also discusses the historical antecedents in the Indus Civilization and the religious and philosophical foundations of the three schools of Buddhism and its founder, Buddha. Previously obscure topics such as Aniconic and Vajrayana (Tantric) architecture and the four holiest sites of Buddhism will also be covered in this comprehensive volume. The author further investigates the influences of Buddhist architecture upon Islamic, Christian, and Hindu architecture that have been overlooked by past scholars."

Take a theoretical approach to architecture with The Autopoiesis of Architecture, which presents the topic as a discipline with its own unique logic. Architecture's conception of itself is addressed as well as its development within wider contemporary society. Author Patrik Schumacher offers innovative treatment that enriches architectural theory with a coordinated arsenal of concepts facilitating both detailed analysis and insightful comparisons with other domains, such as art, science and politics. He explores how the various modes of communication comprising architecture depend upon each other, combine, and form a unique subsystem of society that co-evolves with other important autopoietic subsystems like art, science, politics and the economy. The first of two volumes that together present a comprehensive account of architecture's autopoiesis, this book elaborates the theory of architecture?s autopoeisis in 8 parts, 50 sections and 200 chapters. Each of the 50 sections poses a thesis drawing a central message from the insights articulated within the respective section. The 200 chapters are gathering and sorting the accumulated intelligence of the discipline according to the new conceptual framework adopted, in order to catalyze and elaborate the new formulations and insights that are then encapsulated in the theses. However, while the theoretical work in the text of the chapters relies on the rigorous build up of a new theoretical language, the theses are written in ordinary language ? with the theoretical concepts placed in brackets. The full list of the 50 theses affords a convenient summary printed as appendix at the end of the book. The second volume completes the analysis of the discourse and further proposes a new agenda for contemporary architecture in response to the challenges and opportunities that confront architectural design within the context of current societal and technological developments.

John Simpson is one of the world s leading practitioners of new classicism, a contemporary architecture movement that continues the practice of classical and traditional architecture and embraces the virtues of durability, functionality, and beauty. Simpson s design ethos revolves around the notion that architecture is a public art where each facade forms the character and shape of the public realm the streets, the squares, and the major civic spaces that we use and as such must use a language of building that is recognisable and draws on our collective cultural experience. His architecture is thus understandable in a moment and is functional; it is built to last, to be beautiful, and to ensure the comfort and ease of those who experience it, be it the Queen s Gallery at Buckingham Palace in London or an apartment in a historic building in New York. The work shown covers a wide range, from small-scale residential and apartment design to the country house and the town house to large-scale institutional designs. Featured projects include a new academic quadrangle at Eton College; the new school of architecture at the University of Notre Dame; rooms at Kensington Palace; the Stanhope Hotel renovation in New York; town houses in Belgravia and Chelsea, London; and much more.

The architecture of public open urban space has taken many forms through history, and the points of views of its proper syntax is one that has created conflict and discrepancies among architectural and urban design theorists and practitioners, following the beginning of the modern movement. The present book, a demonstration of the problem of defining civic art in relation to public open urban spaces from modernism and until today, along with the presentation of syntactic demonstrations of contemporary solutions, offers tools and actions for the architectural qualitative habitation of the contemporary public open urban environment. It involves theoretical contemplation based on fundamental bibliography on civic art definitions; analytic and illustrative syntactic representations on paradigmatic shifts of the modern movement; the involvement of heritage considerations and 'interventional' theory; and the experimental application of design solutions for selected contemporary public space problems. The overall result is a syntactic representation of case study analyses and methodological suggestions for new designs and interventions, based on fundamental theory of civic art.

On the Swahili coast of East Africa, monumental stone houses, tombs, and mosques mark the border zone between the interior of the African continent and the Indian Ocean. Prita Meier explores this coastal environment and shows how an African mercantile society created a place of cosmopolitan longing. Meier understands architecture as more than a way to remake local space. Rather, the architecture of this liminal zone was an expression of the desire of coastal inhabitants to belong to places beyond their homeports. Here architecture embodies modern ideas and social identities engendered by the encounter of Africans with others in the Indian Ocean world.

The factor that separates the winners from the losers, the successful and the failures, the survivors from the others."(Zachman, 1996, p. 2)The author Zachman (1996, p. 7) emphasises in his article the growing significance of IT architecture for modern enterprises. According to Zachman (1996, p. 1) IT architecture aligns business strategy with information technology and enables the achievement of business goals. Therefore, an efficient IT architecture is a key factor for companies which are faced with increasing changing markets and shorter product life cycles. In contrast to that, an estimated 68% of corporate IT projects are neither on time nor on budget and they don't deliver the original stated business goals (Jeffery & Leliveld, 2004). RegardingFairbanks (2010, p. 8) a major cause for this is an insufficient risk management in the IT architecture development in principle. Therefore many IT architects ask themselves, how they could identify and prioritize their project's most pressing risks? Which architectureand design techniques mitigate the risks and what is the amount of risk reduction? In order to answer these questions, section 2.1 d...

The author of many books on architecture, including TASCHEN's Modernism Rediscovered, his articles and projects have appeared in Architectural Design, ArCA, Global Architecture, Hunch, Construire, Architettura, ACADIA, and Journal of Architectural Education.
