Strategic Studies Institute Russia.s Prospects in Asia

These three chapters originated in an SSI conference in January 2010 and go to the heart of a question of vital significance for both Asia and Russia, namely what are Russia's prospects in Asia. The three chapters outline the challenges Russia faces in Asia, the nature of the dynamic and complex Asian security environment, and the extent to which Russia is or is not meeting those challenges. These chapters represent both Russian and U.S. views and clearly do not agree in their conclusions or analyses. For this reason, they are all the more interesting. These chapters should provoke debate, reflection, and greater awareness as to the complexities of the current international scene in Asia and of Russia's success or lack thereof in participating in that environment. In view of the extraordinary dynamism that now characterizes Asia and the fact that it is the center of the world economy, the analysis provided here goes beyond obvious issues to address questions that we believe are unjustly neglected, e.g., Russia's prospects as an Asian power and as an independent great power player in Asia. The answers to these questions are urgent for Russians, but very consequential for the U.S. because getting Asia right will be among the most critical challenges to U.S. policymakers in the coming years.

Frederick Burnaby A Ride to Khiva. Travels and Adventures in Central Asia

It is 1875, the time of the 'Great Game', when the British and Russian Empires are vying for power in central Asia. Great Britain learns of Russia's plans to annex India, the 'jewel in the crown' of the Empire. A British officer rides for Khiva, a Russian city closed to European travelers. He is on a dangerous mission, to learn if this remote and dangerous oasis is about to be used as a springboard for the Russian invasion of India. Captain Frederick Burnaby ballooned across the English Channel, traveled in Spain and Russia, and was wounded, and eventually killed, fighting for Britain's empire. This account of his perilous journey to Khiva, published in 1876 and immediately reprinted, brought him instant fame.

Harrison E. Salisbury The Coming War Between Russia and China

Harrison E. Salisbury probably knows Russia better than any other living American correspondent, having traveled widely and frequently through almost every part of the Soviet Union, including the long-sealed-off regions of Siberia, the sub-Arctic, and Central Asia as well as the Volga country and the Ukraine. He has also covered the entire periphery of China, traveling more than 25,000 miles along China's frontiers from the jungles of Southeast Asia to the bristling Siberian-Chinese border. His first assignment in Russia was as head of the United Press bureau in Moscow in 1944. After joining The New York Times in 1949 he became their Moscow correspondent and remained there for the next five years. Out of his observations during this period grew his celebrated series for the Times, "Russia Re-Viewed," which brought him the 1955 Pulitzer Prize. He subsequently wrote two books dealing with the same period, American in Russia (1955) and Moscow Journal--The End of Stalin (1961). His recently published The 900 Days: The Siege of Leningrad was widely acclaimed and an important best-seller. As a result of his reports Mr. Salisbury was barred from Russia for five years, and was not allowed to return to the country until 1959. At that time he stayed for nearly six months, traveling thousands of miles within the Soviet Union. His 1960 book, To Moscow and Beyond, was a result of this trip. He has since revisited Russia in 1961-62, 1966, 1967, and 1969.Издательство: Pan Books Ltd

Ibn Batuta, 1304-1377 Ibn Batuta The Travels of Ibn Battuta to Central Asia

The original Travels of Ibn Battuta ranks high amongst the masterpieces of Arabic geographical literature and is of great significance in the understanding of the history of the peoples inhabiting the Central Asian states. In 1325, Ibn Battuta, a traveler and adventurer from Tangiers, embarked on an extraordinary journey via Mecca to Egypt, East Africa, India, and China and returned some thirty years later to write about his experiences. Ibrahimov Nematulla Ibrahimovich details the life and travels of Ibn Battuta to give the reader an idea of the extent of the adventures and also to provide insights into the remarkable traveler himself. He then chronicles both lay and learned opinion over the centuries with regard to the amazing yet controversial journey, revealing the doubt that existed towards the authenticity of the tales: were they simply a fantastic invention or were they real experiences? To illustrate his argument, Ibrahimovich then selects a passage from The Travels concerning Central Asia and provides extensive historical and philological commentary and notes on the passage in an effort to persuade the reader of the authenticity of the tales and their value in helping us understand the peoples of Central Asia in the fourteenth century.

Russia is actively seeking to rebuild its economic influence via the newly created Eurasian Economic Union. China is expanding its reach through a recently launched Silk Road Economic Belt. Other actors are jockeying for their share of the region's pie, as well. But the United States and India are enjoying only very limited presence in what is increasingly becoming a critical part of the world. In this comprehensive and insightful account, Mr. Roman Muzalevsky, an author of a book and several monographs on global trends, great power politics, grand strategy, and connectivity issues, explains why India lags behind other actors in the region and what needs to be done to unlock its potential as a rising great power and shore up its strategic presence in Central Asia.

F William Engdahl Target. China: How Washington and Wall Street Plan to Cage the Asian Dragon

China today has become a world economic giant in just three decades. The country's central bank holds more than $3.5 trillion in foreign exchange reserves, mostly in dollars. Without the Chinese colossus, the USA might have long ago gone bankrupt, unable to finance its exploding national debt. Now that China has emerged as the world's second largest economy, some powerful circles in Wall Street and Washington are alarmed that the Chinese might no longer follow the agenda, but decide for themselves what is best for China. They see China as a threat to their global power. The result is growing tension between Beijing and Washington - in the Middle East, Africa, and in Asia.Especially alarming is covert US backing of Japan in a conflict with China over remote Pacific islands. China is beginning to feel escalating hostility, and not only from the Pentagon. Open conflict between the USA and China could deal a death-blow to the fragile world economy. This book explains in clear terms what is at stake if Washington continues to try to turn the Chinese Dragon into an enemy state.

Has a fixed currency. Fosters industry. Brings over her subjects to Christianity. The advances of Russia in Central Asia are at present occupying a good deal of attention; perhaps, therefore, some observations about what Russia does for the tribes over which she extends her empire may be interesting. As the range of my personal observation has been confined to Mongolia and Siberia, I limit my remarks to what I have seen and heard in these parts, contrasting the effect of Russian influence on the north, with the effect of Chinese influence on the south. Protection is the first and most important consideration for any nation or tribe, and in this respect Russia shows to immense advantage when compared with China. The Mongols under Chinese government seem to have no protection at all. A band of robbers has only to appear, and the country far and near is at their mercy. Messengers may be sent to Peking on the fleetest horses; the officers at the nearer military centres may bestir themselves as they like, the military organisations are such that no protective force can appear on the scene RUSSIA PROTECTS HER SUBJECT...

Conte Roberto, Perego Stefano Soviet Asia. Soviet Modernist Architecture in Central Asia

A fantastic collection of Soviet Asian architecture, many photographed here for the first time Soviet Asia explores the Soviet modernist architecture of Central Asia. Italian photographers Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego crossed the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, documenting buildings constructed from the 1950s until the fall of the USSR. The resulting images showcase the majestic, largely unknown, modernist buildings of the region. Museums, housing complexes, universities, circuses, ritual palaces - all were constructed using a composite aesthetic. Influenced by Persian and Islamic architecture, pattern and mosaic motifs articulated a connection with Central Asia. Grey concrete slabs were juxtaposed with colourful tiling and rectilinear shapes broken by ornate curved forms: the brutal designs normally associated with Soviet-era architecture were reconstructed with Eastern characteristics. Many of the buildings shown in Soviet Asia are recorded here for the first time, making this book an important document, as despite the recent revival of interest in Brutalist and Modernist architecture, a number of them remain under threat of demolition. The publication includes two contextual essays, one by Alessandro De Magistris (architect and History of Architecture professor, University of Milan, contributor to the book Vertical Moscow) and the other by Marco Buttino (Modern and Urban History professor, University of Turin, specializing in the history of social change in the USSR).

The European Union has developed a range of instruments to promote democracy and human rights worldwide. However, the success of its democratization efforts remains questionable in countries that lack an EU membership perspective. The case of post-soviet Central Asia, where the EU declares democracy promotion among its key priorities yet is confronted with unfavorable domestic conditions for democratization and often fails to follow through, is an eye-opening example. Vera Axyonova's study offers the first comprehensive evaluation of the micro-level effects of the EU engagement in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan and examines the factors that have made the EU efforts more or less successful in Central Asia.

Among the many changes brought to American security policy by the attacks of September 11, 2001, is a shift in the strategic geography. Regions and nations that had been at the periphery of concern have taken on new importance because of their relationship to terrorists and the states that sponsor them. Nowhere is this more true than in Central Asia. Until recently, the United States paid very little attention to Central Asia. Now the combination of energy reserves and the region's location has increased its strategic significance a great deal. In this study, Dr. Elizabeth Wishnick, currently a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Lingnan University, Hong Kong, assesses U.S. security interests and military activities in Central Asia. She notes that strengthening the Central Asian states against terrorism and assisting their transition to stable and prosperous nations are difficult and fraught with danger.

Jargalan Tumurchudur Regional Integration in Northeast Asia - Assessing Conditions

Northeast Asia, which consists of Japan, the Koreas, Mongolia, China and Russia, is the least integrated region in the world. However, there is a lot of speculation that current turbulent circumstances are spurring greater cooperation and integration in this divided region. China's emergence as the major economic power and global player in world politics is the main significant motor that is changing the status quo. The study argues that the region has become more prone to regional integration now and aims to analyze the background conditions for regional integration present. The theory of neofunctionalsim is used to identify the basic conditions for regional integration and, in relation to it, the factors that were hindering the regional projects previously would be looked at. I contend that the obstacles impeding regional integration have become fewer, while motives for integration increased, thus fueling the talks about the breakthrough in regionalism in Northeast Asia. Nevertheless, there is still not enough political and elite will among the countries to initiate closer regional ties, which consitute the main hindrance for regional integration for now.

This book examines two interrelated questions: To what extent has EU democracy promotion in Central Asia been successful? And, to the extent that it was successful, why was it so?The book presents a comprehensive analytical framework for the evaluation of democracy promotion, including factors which may facilitate or hinder democratic development in Central Asia. It demonstrates the validity of a holistic approach to analyzing impediments of democracy promotion meaning that external pro-democratic support is affected by a variety of diverse factors whose impact can vary as international, regional, and domestic conditions change. The stable and rich authoritarian state of Kazakhstan is different from the much poorer Kyrgyzstan-a state prone to political instability, but also to democratic openings. By contrasting the success of democracy promotion in these two countries which have different strategic importance for the EU, this study provides valuable insights into how non-normative interests interfere with normatively driven policies.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Environmental Policy, , language: English, abstract: This research covers the topic of energy security in China in the period of 1993 to 2013. The first chapter starts from a general understanding of the "energy security" notion and different approaches on its preservation. Then, it follows to the evolution of the term in China proceeding to the part describing the common situation with the most energy consuming states in the Asia-Pacific Region. The second chapter analyzes different approaches on handling energy security dilemma in China within its domestic policy. The scrutiny is made to follow the path from a widely applied over the history of China - extensive approach, continuing with a less popular but still valuable - intensive approach, and finishing with the most promising - innovative approach. Ultimately the third chapter goes beyond the internal boundaries and shows possible solutions to the risen problem on the global scale. It refers to enlargement of Beijing's foreign energy partnership and unraveling the tangle of the Malacca Strait by an extra pipeline system crossing Myanmar, canal projects traversing some South-East Asia states, expanded energy resources production in the South China Sea and partial redirection of Chinese petroleum and LNG carriers northwards.

Strategic Studies Institute, U.S. Army War College, Roman Muzalevsky Central Asia.s Shrinking Connectivity Gap. Implications For U.S. Strategy

Once sealed off from the rest of the world during the Soviet times, the states of Central Asia today are rapidly integrating with the global economy. The opening up of China in the 1980s, the demise of the Soviet Union a decade later, and the ongoing globalization have all served as grand forces facilitating this highly monumental development. The U.S. regional military involvement after September 11, 2001, and engagement by other actors have further enabled these countries to reconnect with the world, this time as sovereign units. Today, more than 2 decades after they gained their independence, the Central Asian countries, along with the rest of the world, face a great challenge and an opportunity-the rise of China, India, and resurgence of Russia. These neighboring powers are investing and facilitating internal and external links of the region and profoundly shaping the region's external connectivity at the very time as the United States withdraws its troops from Afghanistan...

Russian Textiles: Printed Cloth for the Bazaars of Central Asia

Russian Textiles showcases the gorgeous printed-cotton textiles created and manufactured in Russia and exported to Central Asia from approximately 1860 to 1960. More than 175 spectacular patterns spanning a variety of periods and styles, from Art Nouveau florals to Soviet-era agitprop, are featured. The people in these Central Asian countries — including Uzbeks, Tadjiks, and Turkmen — incorporated the brightly patterned material into their clothing, particularly their robes, and in their household items. Brief essays by the author and fellow textile experts describe the "social life" of the fabrics and the fascinating history of this merging of Russian, Western, and Central Asian aesthetic styles; Robert Kushner contributes a lively text on how an artist "sees" and is inspired by these designs. Complementing the pattern images are vintage photographs from the turn of the 20th century as well as beautifully detailed reproductions of the robes and other articles that were lined and embellished with these cloths.

H. Rider Haggard Ayesha. The Return of She by H. Rider Haggard, Fiction, Fantasy, Classics, Historical, Fairy Tales, Folk Tales, Legends & Mythology

This book, second in the trilogy that begins with She, takes place in central Asia (China, Tibet, or Russia -- Haggard never tells us where, exactly, but it's clearly someplace in that vicinity), rather than Africa, but loses nothing for its location. The book's full of adventure -- a great avalanche, a chase by the death hounds, Ayesha's reincarnation, and of course the ultimate battle with Kalloon . . . there's even Ayesha's meeting with her "servants" -- that is shadows and ghosts from beyond and the past. Not to be missed by Haggard fans.

Daniel H. Shubin Aleksandr Dobrolubov, Russia.s Mystic Pilgrim

Aleksander Mikhailovich Dobrolubov was a successor to a long line of wanderers or pilgrims in Russia's history. Such people abandoned their secular associates, means of income, permanent home, family, and subjection to the state, and departed into society as religious nomads, working wherever work would be offered them. This was their moral self-perfection, Christian self-realization, departure from sin and attainment of holiness. Dobrolubov was Russia's mystic pilgrim, preaching his version of Christian spirituality in central Russia, Siberia and central Asia, during the early years of Soviet Russia. Living the Holy Spirit, walking and thinking in the Holy Spirit, every day and in every activity, this was Aleksandr Dobrolubov. This volume includes an original translation from the Russian of Dobrolubov's book, From the Invisible Book, a compilation of his divine poetry, visions and revelations, and his concept of the Holy Spirit life. Born in 1876, he died in about 1943.

Richard Weitz, Strategic Studies Institute, U.S. Army War College Parsing Chinese-Russian Military Exercises

China and Russia have two of the world's most powerful militaries, and their growing defense cooperation has long been a subject of interest to the United States. Studying their military exercises provides insights for several questions of critical importance for the U.S. Army: What are the evolving power-projection capabilities of the Chinese and Russian armed forces? How have their tactics, techniques, and procedures evolved over time? How do the Chinese and Russian militaries conduct joint operations, from planning to execution? What is their level of operational interoperability-physical and otherwise? How might they conduct a future counterterrorist or counterinsurgency campaign in Central Asia, or maintain regional security in the region following the withdrawal of most North Atlantic Treaty Organization combat forces from Afghanistan? This monograph helps us to answer these questions, as well as consider the broader nature of the trilateral relationship between China, Russia, and the United States.

Aksana Ismailbekova Blood Ties and the Native Son. Poetics of Patronage in Kyrgyzstan

A pioneering study of kinship, patronage, and politics in Central Asia, Blood Ties and the Native Son tells the story of the rise and fall of a man called Rahim, an influential and powerful patron in rural northern Kyrgyzstan, and of how his relations with clients and kin shaped the economic and social life of the region. Many observers of politics in post-Soviet Central Asia have assumed that corruption, nepotism, and patron-client relations would forestall democratization. Looking at the intersection of kinship ties with political patronage, Aksana Ismailbekova finds instead that this intertwining has in fact enabled democratization--both kinship and patronage develop apace with democracy, although patronage relations may stymie individual political opinion and action.

Steve Micallef Militarisation in East Asia. Considerations from the Works of Thucydides and Alfred Thayer Mahan

"I believe China seeks hegemony in East Asia. Simple as that." Such were the words Admiral Harry Harris Commander U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM) used to describe Chinese actions in East Asia. After two decades of effort towards modernization, it seems that the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is in a position to challenge US primacy in East Asia. The PLAN has developed both in terms of capability and strategy through its emphasis on Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) and blue-water forces, embracing Alfred Thayer Mahan's ideas on access and sea control. What we are witnessing in China is a shift in thinking: from a continental viewpoint to a maritime one. After a decade of wars in the Middle East, the US has been taken by surprise. Today it looks at China's naval build-up as threatening. The US has taken steps to refocus its attention on East Asia and meet the challenge of a contested sea. The dynamics of the Sino-American relation will also be examined through the lens of Thucydides and his ideas of great power. This study discusses Mahan's and Thucydides' influence on Chinese and American ways of thinking and whether it will impact the future trajectory of the Sino-American relationship. The main developments in capability and strategy on both sides will also be examined.
