Tall building frames that respond to large seismic ground motions tend to have significant spatial variability of damage over their height, often with a concentration of that damage in the lower stories. A new loss analysis approach is recommended in this book, that incorporates the effects of spatial distribution of earthquake induced damage to frame buildings. Moreover, the approach aims to discriminate between required repair and replacement damages. Suites of earthquakes and incremental dynamic analysis along with the commercial software SAP2000 are used to establish demands from which story damage and financial losses are computed directly and aggregated for the entire structure. Rigorous and simplified methods are developed that account for spatial distribution of different damage levels arising from individual story drifts.

The costs of construction for these two buildings have also been compared. An extensive study on lumped plasticity model as per FEMA 356 with varying position of plastic hinge and its effect on pushover curve has also discussed in the paper. The paper also comments on the plastic hinge pattern.

Seismic inversion aims to reconstruct a quantitative model of the Earth subsurface, by solving an inverse problem based on seismic measurements. Elevators comprise components prone to earthquakes which should be protected against failures. Elevators installed in and around the Great Rift Valley are subjected to seismic effects. Dynamic Performance of elevators depends mainly on the contact between the guide rails and sliding shoes. Only few studies had been conducted to improve it. This book discusses seismic performance of elevators based on rail-slide shoe-counterweight connections. Lumped parameter dynamic and analytic models are generated for possible causes of nonlinearities; then equations of motions are formulated. To verify the analysis, a case study is conducted based on an elevator installed in Bole area that lies in zone-3 of the seismic map of Addis Ababa. The problem is analyzed with EBCS code and the PSD. It is found that EBCS code is inept to handle random vibrations like the earthquake motion and a code revision is suggested. Moreover, elevators constructed in Ethiopia found not to resist seismic motions larger than 0.1g.

In order to determine the tectonic content of the apron, a weather-protected measuring system was developed, which detects the position of disturbances by seismic channel waves. There are two methods for mapping: 1. The Through-Transmission Measurement provides information about a fault in the seam 2. The reflection measurement provides information about the situation. A great sense of accuracy can be achieved with combined use of both methods. The analysis of 111 measurements shows that geological conditions made the accuracy of the measurements very good, while in geologically complex structures the location of the disturbance proved to be very difficult. The loss of resolution associated with envelope formation prevents the detection of clutter. To remedy this situation, the reflected Flözwellenzug must be attributed to a needle pulse. Theoretical investigations confirm this approach. Since flute waves are subject to absorption - the higher the frequency, the stronger the absorption - and the loss of energy in reflection occurs, research in this area still needs to be done in order to use the insights gained in data processing. During the last decades, the scientific community spent many efforts to study the gas hydrates in oceanic and permafrost environments. In fact, the gas hydrate occurrence has a global significance because it is a potential energy resource. Moreover, it may play a role in global climate change. The detection of a bottom-simulating reflector (BSR), by using seismic methods, has allowed to define the distribution of gas hydrate. In the last decades, along the Chilean continental margin the BSR is well reported by several geophysical cruises. In particular, the BSR is recognized along the accretionary prism. The main goal of this study is to map the gas hydrate occurrence along Chilean margin. The main results obtained from seismic analysis are shown in this book. This analysis giving us information regarding the seismic velocity distribution, geothermal gradient, variation of gas concentrations and a realistic estimate of gas-phase. The results are promising because an important gas reservoir was identified.

To study the performance of Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) the formulation of structure-TLCD combined system considers mass, damping and stiffness of primary structure and damper parameters like mass ratio, tuning ratio, length ratio, damping in terms of head loss coefficient of the orifice installed in TLCD. The maximum structural displacement obtained from the parametric study is used as the objective function for the optimization process to get optimum TLCD and the liquid displacement inside the damper. This optimum TLCD is further used to calculate the acceleration to check for any potential problem. For this optimization process a set of real seismic records are considered having wide range of intensity, dominant frequency and duration. Furthermore, a statistical study is performed to understand the possible variations in the performance of TLCD. The observations of the parametric analysis and optimization results are in conformity with the fact that TLCD performs well in case of structural displacement reduction. But, in case of structural acceleration reduction, it is not performing well, even in some cases it shows negative results.

The Uemachi fault is a 40-kilometer long reverse fault that traverses north south through the middle of the Osaka City, one of the most highly populated regions in Japan. An integrated geophysical survey, using shallow high-resolution seismic reflection and ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods, was carried out across the Uemachi fault system to explore the subsurface geometrical layout of the fault and to investigate the possible activity and evolution of the fault system in order to mitigate future natural hazards. Seismic survey lines that had been acquired using different acquisition parameters and instrumentation were compiled into a single 9.2-kilometer long seismic section that shows the subsurface configuration of the Uemachi fault and the Suminoe flexure. A GPR survey was conducted across the Uemachi fault to investigate the shallow part of the subsurface and to confirm the presence of the shallow faults detected by seismic survey. Integrated information from seismic sections, GPR survey and drilling data in the study area are used to construct a simple structural model, which explains the subsurface geometry, activity, and evolution of the Uemachi fault.

This book presents the development of a new method to predict load-deformation responses of reinforced concrete (RC) columns both with and without fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) jacketing under seismic loading. In the case of the flexure mechanism, the section analysis was applied considering the confinement effect of FRP jacketing. This section analysis was combined with the shear mechanism, which was modeled based on the truss mechanism. The flexure-shear models showed significant interactions due to the reduction of reinforcement secant stiffness after yielding and concrete deterioration. The analytical method was verified using an experimental program consisting of square columns strengthened with FRP-jacketing that was tested under reversed cyclic loading, and various parameters including steel reinforcement and fiber ratio were investigated. The proposed analytical method is more effective for predicting the load-deformation relationship, including the post-peak behavior of FRP-jacketed RC columns, than the conventional analytical method and proves that fibers with high fracture strain can provide good ultimate ductility.

The runoff and soil loss was maximum from the concave-convex-concave- convex slope shape without crop, whereas it was minimum from uniform slope without crop.
