In this book, the self-healing of composite structures with shape memory polymer as either matrix or embedded suture is systematically discussed. Self-healing has been well known in biological systems for many years: a typical example is the self-healing of human skin. Whilst a minor wound can be self-closed by blood clotting, a deep and wide cut needs external help by suturing. Inspired by this observation, this book proposes a two-step close-then-heal (CTH) scheme for healing wide-opened cracks in composite structures–by constrained shape recovery first, followed by molecular healing. It is demonstrated that the CTH scheme can heal wide-opened structural cracks repeatedly, efficiently, timely, and molecularly. It is believed that self-healing represents the next-generation technology and will become an engineering reality in the near future. The book consists of both fundamental background and practical skills for implementing the CTH scheme, with additional focus on understanding strain memory versus stress memory and healing efficiency evaluation under various fracture modes. Potential applications to civil engineering structures, including sealant for bridge decks and concrete pavements, and rutting resistant asphalt pavements, are also explored. This book will help readers to understand this emerging field, and to establish a framework for new innovation in this direction. Key features: explores potential applications of shape memory polymers in civil engineering structures, which is believed to be unique within the literature balanced testing and mathematical modeling, useful for both academic researchers and practitioners the self-healing scheme is based on physical change of polymers and is written in an easy to understand style for engineering professionals without a strong background in chemistry

Syed Kamil Nickel Free Titanium Based Shape Memory Alloys

Biomedical shape memory alloys are required to have a superior corrosion resistance, biocompatibility and stable shape memory properties. Among many shape memory alloys, only NiTi alloys have been widely applied for biomedical applications, because they satisfy the above requirements. However, it has been pointed out that pure nickel is a toxic element and cause nickel hypersensitivity. It is preferable to develop absolutely safe nickel free titanium based shape memory alloys composed of non-toxic elements such as niobium for biomedical applications. In this book, the effect of molybdenum addition in Ti-Nb binary alloy was investigated. Two alloys with varying compositions namely alloy 1 (Ti-26at%Nb) and alloy 2 (Ti-26at%Nb-0.1at%Mo) were developed. After homogenization and cold rolling, samples of dimensions 30×3×0.86 mm were prepared using diamond cutting machine. The prepared samples were solution treated and then subjected to different tests to evaluate their properties. There is slight increase in micro-hardness (Hv) with increase in molybdenum. XRD spectra revealed the presence of two phases in the solution treated samples, α-martensite (Ti4Nb) and retained austenite (β).

Earthquakes are a way of life on Earth, and, whether you live in an area that is often affected by earthquakes or not, every building, every road, every bridge, and, in fact, almost everything constructed by humans in which we walk, sleep, live, sit, or visit, has to be constructed to withstand an earthquake, by following local, regional, or national codes, laws, and regulations. Further to this, the science and engineering behind these constructions go further than what is mandated by government as a part of their practice. All construction, and, in general, all life on Earth, has some risk of seismic impacts. A comprehensive description of any seismic action may be given only on a probabilistic basis and, in general, is very bulky and quite uncertain. However, for a variety of structures or systems that meet fairly simple models of behavior during earthquakes, a general description of the seismic action is not required, for prediction of the status of such facilities or systems may be sufficient to define one or more common parameters of seismic impact. Thus, it makes sense to search for optimal parameters of influence in which optimality is understood with the greatest ease with sufficient information. This book contains a description of several models of seismic effects and examples of implementation of these models at specific sites. Using this information, scientists and engineers can design structures that are stronger, safer, and longer-lasting. It is a must-have for any scientist, engineer, or student working in or researching seismic loads and constructions with a view toward withstanding seismic activity.

Sundaresan Sindhuja Seismic Reliability of Dam Structures

Reliability analysis of structures implies the estimate of the limit state probabilities of a structure under adverse/environmental loading. Most important aspect of seismic reliability analysis is identification of all uncertainties, methods for modeling and analysis, analytical formulation of the limit state surface and integration of probability density function. In the seismic reliability analysis of the dam structure, the limit state probability of the structure is integrated with the seismic risk of the site. In this study, Coulee concrete gravity dam structure is modeled and seismic reliability of the dam structure in the presence of full reservoir and empty reservoir are analyzed. The dam-reservoir and reservoir-foundation interactions are considered in the study. The transient analysis is done by considering El Centro and Loma Prieta earthquake record. The randomness of ground motion, uncertainties in its occurrence, definition of its intensity parameters are considered in seismic reliability analysis. The material uncertainty of the dam is included in the study.

Mohd Rizwan Bhina, D. K. Paul Assessment of R. C. Flat Slab Building

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: B, , course: Master of technology - Structural Dynamics, language: English, abstract: Flat-Slab building is very popular from the aesthetic and architectural point of view. From functional aspect a flat-slab building is more efficient than a R.C. frame building. So, construction of Flat-Slab building is increasing also in high seismic zone. Sometimes international building codes remain silent about the seismic response of flat slab buildings. In this paper the response of Flat-Slab building and a normal symmetric R.C. frame building of same dimension have been studied for varying seismic intensities. Static, Response Spectrum, Pushover, and Time history analysis have been performed to assess the performance of the two buildings. The costs of construction for these two buildings have also been compared. An extensive study on lumped plasticity model as per FEMA 356 with varying position of plastic hinge and its effect on pushover curve has also discussed in the paper. The paper also comments on the plastic hinge pattern.

This book is written for advanced earth science students, geologists, petroleum engineers and others who want to get quickly ‘up to speed’ on the interpretation of reflection seismic data. It is a development of material given to students on the MSc course in Petroleum Geology at Aberdeen University and takes the form of a course manual rather than a systematic textbook. It can be used as a self-contained course for individual study, or as the basis for a class programme. The book clarifies those aspects of the subject that students tend to find difficult, and provides insights through practical tutorials which aim to reinforce and deepen understanding of key topics and provide the reader with a measure of feedback on progress. Some tutorials may only involve drawing simple diagrams, but many are computer-aided (PC based) with graphics output to give insight into key steps in seismic data processing or into the seismic response of some common geological scenarios. Part I of the book covers basic ideas and it ends with two tutorials in 2-D structural interpretation. Part II concentrates on the current seismic reflection contribution to reservoir studies, based on 3-D data.

Widely used in civil, mechanical and automotive engineering since the early 1980s, multilayer rubber bearings have been used as seismic isolation devices for buildings in highly seismic areas in many countries. Their appeal in these applications comes from their ability to provide a component with high stiffness in one direction with high flexibility in one or more orthogonal directions. This combination of vertical stiffness with horizontal flexibility, achieved by reinforcing the rubber by thin steel shims perpendicular to the vertical load, enables them to be used as seismic and vibration isolators for machinery, buildings and bridges. Mechanics of Rubber Bearings for Seismic and Vibration Isolation collates the most important information on the mechanics of multilayer rubber bearings. It explores a unique and comprehensive combination of relevant topics, covering all prerequisite fundamental theory and providing a number of closed-form solutions to various boundary value problems as well as a comprehensive historical overview on the use of isolation. Many of the results presented in the book are new and are essential for a proper understanding of the behavior of these bearings and for the design and analysis of vibration or seismic isolation systems. The advantages afforded by adopting these natural rubber systems is clearly explained to designers and users of this technology, bringing into focus the design and specification of bearings for buildings, bridges and industrial structures. This comprehensive book: includes state of the art, as yet unpublished research along with all required fundamental concepts; is authored by world-leading experts with over 40 years of combined experience on seismic isolation and the behavior of multilayer rubber bearings; is accompanied by a website at www.wiley.com/go/kelly The concise approach of Mechanics of Rubber Bearings for Seismic and Vibration Isolation forms an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers/practitioners in structural and mechanical engineering departments, in particular those working in seismic and vibration isolation.

Alrishawi Samer Implementation of Cable Restrainers in Seismic Retrofitting of Bridges

Highway bridges in seismic prone areas suffer a serious structural issues when subjected to a severe earthquake, which are the longitudinal hinge displacements. The hinge displacements might put the structure integrity in jeopardy when they exceed certain limits. High hinge displacements can cause fatal effects on the bridge structure including; bearing failure, unseating, and pounding of the adjacent superstructure decks. The aim of this study is to implement a numerical model which characterize the standard properties of a highway bridge and put it under a high intensity seismic excitation to examine its response. Then attempting to enhance the structure response using cable restrainers as means of displacement control. A parametric study is to be performed to investigate the effect of the restrainer material properties (Stiffness and Effective damping) on the efficiency of the cable restrainer in performing its intended purpose. The bridge was modelled and analysed using CSIBridge® finite element package.

This book presents a study of the stability of mechanical systems, i.e. their free response when they are removed from their position of equilibrium after a temporary disturbance. After reviewing the main analytical methods of the dynamical stability of systems, it highlights the fundamental difference in nature between the phenomena of forced resonance vibration of mechanical systems subjected to an imposed excitation and instabilities that characterize their free response. It specifically develops instabilities arising from the rotor–structure coupling, instability of control systems, the self-sustained instabilities associated with the presence of internal damping and instabilities related to the fluid–structure coupling for fixed and rotating structures. For an original approach following the analysis of instability phenomena, the book provides examples of solutions obtained by passive or active methods.

Tesis de Maestría del año 2014 en eltema Biología - Patologías, salud, nutrición, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Idioma: Español, Resumen: Malnutrition is a complex process that affects the entire body not just for weight loss but also for alterations that originate from the immune system (IS). The main function of IS is to defend our bodies against aggressions external. It has been shown that different types of cell have the ability to regulate immune response, one of the populations of T-cell help us contribute to this balance and establish control of the immune response are regulatory T cells (Treg). During infection by pathogens these cells reduce the magnitude of effector response, which limits the immune and therefore infection control response. Treg are a particular group of lymphocytes CD4+, which play a fundamental role in the maintenance of tolerance to antigens themselves, avoid the occurrence of autoimmune diseases, control the development of an excessive immune response to pathogens or against different allergens. It has been shown that Treg cells isolated from peripheral blood, suppress the proliferation and cytokine production by native T cells in vitro and memory. There are several studies that support the effect of malnutrition on immune function, even the possible mechanisms by which malnourished bodies show an inefficient immune response to infections has not been determined with clarity. As we consider essential to assess the proportion of Treg cells ...

Seismic inversion aims to reconstruct a quantitative model of the Earth subsurface, by solving an inverse problem based on seismic measurements. There are at least three fundamental issues to be solved simultaneously: non-linearity, non-uniqueness, and instability. This book covers the basic theory and techniques used in seismic inversion, corresponding to these three issues, emphasising the physical interpretation of theoretical concepts and practical solutions. This book is written for master and doctoral students who need to understand the mathematical tools and the engineering aspects of the inverse problem needed to obtain geophysically meaningful solutions. Building on the basic theory of linear inverse problems, the methodologies of seismic inversion are explained in detail, including ray-impedance inversion and waveform tomography etc. The application methodologies are categorised into convolutional and wave-equation based groups. This systematic presentation simplifies the subject and enables an in-depth understanding of seismic inversion. This book also provides a practical guide to reservoir geophysicists who are attempting quantitative reservoir characterisation based on seismic data. Philosophically, the seismic inverse problem allows for a range of possible solutions, but the techniques described herein enable geophysicists to exclude models that cannot satisfy the available data. This book summarises the author’s extensive experience in both industry and academia and includes innovative techniques not previously published.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Engineering - Power Engineering, grade: Merit, University of Manchester, course: Electrical Power Systems Engineering, language: English, abstract: This dissertation introduces wind-induced vibrations that influence the performance of overhead line structures. The main focus in this study is on Aeolian vibrations and the quantities related to the calculations of its performance such as safe design tension and fatigue limits. However, there are three main methods that are proposed to evaluate conductors with respect to vibrations which are Safe Design Tension Method, Fatigue Endurance Limits Method, and Energy Balance Method. The safe design tension method is applied on Aluminium Composite Steel Reinforced (ACSR) and All Aluminium Alloy Composite (AAAC). Eventually, a relationship is established between tension of conductor and span length. The fatigue endurance limits method uses bending strain and stress to evaluate the fatigue level on the conductor. The effect of vibration dampers to overcome vibration problems on overhead line conductors is also considered. Moreover, an assessment tool based on Microsoft EXCEL is developed which allows the evaluation of overhead line system conductors based on environmental conditions, mechanical properties, and system specifications. The assessment tool evaluates the overhead line system with respect to bending amplitude or alternatively using the antinode amplitude. The analysis of f...

George a. Miller, Eugene Galanter, Karl H. Pribram Plans and the Structure of Behavior

2013 Reprint of 1960 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. By 1960, psychology had come to be dominated by behaviorism and learning theory, which emphasized the observable stimulus and response components of human and animal behavior while ignoring the cognitive processes that mediate the relationship between the stimulus and response. The cognitive phenomena occurring within the "black box" between stimulus and response were of little interest to behaviorists, as their mathematical models worked without them. In 1960, the book "Plans and the Structure of Behavior," authored by George A. Miller, Eugene Galanter, and Karl H. Pribram, was published. In this volume, Miller and his colleagues sought to unify the behaviorists' learning theory with a cognitive model of learned behavior. Whereas the behaviorists suggested that a simple reflex arc underlies the acquisition of the stimulus-response relationship, Miller and his colleagues proposed that "some mediating organization of experience is necessary" somewhere between the stimulus and response, in effect a cognitive process which must include monitoring devices that control the acquisition of the stimulus-response relationship. They named this fundamental unit of behavior the T.O.T.E. for "Test - Operate - Test - Exit".

Bikram Jit Singh RSM. A Key to Optimize Machining: Multi-Response Optimization of CNC Turning with Al-7020 Alloy

Parametric optimization, especially in machining of non-ferrous alloys seems to be quite rare and needs an immediate attention because of its associated downstream financial and non-financial losses. This book tries to fill the gap and presents an optimization problem of commonly used Al-7020 Alloy. Principles of Response Surface Methodology (RSM) have been implemented through Minitab software to bring necessary multi-response optimization, while turning on a CNC turner. The present study focuses on to enhance Material Removal Rate (MRR) while simultaneously reducing the Surface Roughness (Ra), during turning of Al-alloy. Such opposite natured response optimization is much difficult to achieve, particularly when uncoated carbide tip has been used as a cutting tool. Intensive literature survey helps to pin point parameters like; Cutting Speed, Feed Rate and Depth of Cut as a most critical to machining parameters, as far as effective and efficient optimization of selected responses are concerned. All these control-parameters are directly or inversely related to each other. If the depth of cut is increased MRR increases at the same time we get poor surface finish. Increase in the cutting speed has positive impact on both material removal rate and surface finish. Shortlisted parameters are conflicting, so we have to optimize these for further enhancement of the overall turning performance. At last, the optimized results are verified by using ANOVA as a statistical tool. This book...

A. Sattar Ahmed Leaks and Blockages in Pipelines

A new technique is developed utilizing the system pressure frequency response to locate and quantify leaks and blockages. The pressure frequency response is calculated at the downstream valve by the transfer matrix method. It is found that the presence of leaks and blockages alters the shape of the system pressure frequency response, the amplitude of pressure oscillations at even harmonics is increased and the amplitude at the odd harmonics is decreased. The increase in amplitude at the even harmonics is used to detect the location of leaks or blockages based on the leak and blockage frequency. For a simple pipeline, the technique successfully detected blockages up to 30% in size and leaks up to 2% of the mean discharge. Moreover, the computed results are verified by comparing with experimental measurements and those obtained by using the method of characteristics.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 1990 in the subject Physics - Other, grade: 1,0, Technical University of Clausthal, course: Geophysik, language: English, abstract: With the increasing automation of mining, the underground mining forecourt mining is becoming increasingly important. In order to determine the tectonic content of the apron, a weather-protected measuring system was developed, which detects the position of disturbances by seismic channel waves. There are two methods for mapping: 1. The Through-Transmission Measurement provides information about a fault in the seam 2. The reflection measurement provides information about the situation. A great sense of accuracy can be achieved with combined use of both methods. The analysis of 111 measurements shows that geological conditions made the accuracy of the measurements very good, while in geologically complex structures the location of the disturbance proved to be very difficult. The loss of resolution associated with envelope formation prevents the detection of clutter. To remedy this situation, the reflected Flözwellenzug must be attributed to a needle pulse. Theoretical investigations confirm this approach. Since flute waves are subject to absorption - the higher the frequency, the stronger the absorption - and the loss of energy in reflection occurs, research in this area still needs to be done in order to use the insights gained in data processing. Remedies cause a spatial distribution of energy and thus ...

Annabattula Jawahar, Yelamanchi Dharmesh, Tiruvaipati Srinivas Sirish Transient Performance of Capacitive Voltage Transformers

The transient response of the voltage on the secondary is investigated with following changes in the model. Two instants of switching are considered. Instrument transformers are the integral components of power systems .Capacitive Voltage Transformers (CVTs) are widely used for protection, metering and control applications. The work presents the modeling of CVT by its equivalent circuit. A 420kV CVT is considered with a line to ground fault on the primary side. Another kind of transient response called ferro resonance is also studied. Three types of ferro resonance suppression circuits (FSCs) are considered to dampen the behavior due to ferro resonance The parameters of these FSCs are discussed. The impedance, power characteristics of these FSCs with variation of frequency are studied. Furthermore, using metal oxide varistors are used to improve the performance of the FSCs.The two switching instants in presence of FSC are also evaluated .The effect of FSCs on the transient response of CVTs are presented in this work. The effect of magnetizing current of intermediate voltage transformer on the transient response is also simulated.

Specialist terms are defined in the appendix. There is an extensive index befitting such a work of reference. The structure of the content and highlighting in the text make the book easy to use. The notation, properties of materials and geometrical properties of sections plus brief outlines of matrix algebra, tensor calculus and calculus of variations can be found in the appendices. This publication should be regarded as a key work of reference for students, teaching staff and practising engineers. Its purpose is to show readers how to model and handle structures appropriately, to support them in designing and checking the structures within their sphere of responsibility.

The aim of this book is to understand and describe the martensitic phase transformation and the process of martensite platelet reorientation. These two key elements enable the author to introduce the main features associated with the behavior of shape-memory alloys (SMAs), i.e. the one-way shape-memory effect, pseudo-elasticity, training and recovery. Attention is paid in particular to the thermodynamical frame for solid materials modeling at the macroscopic scale and its applications, as well as to the particular use of such alloys – the simplified calculations for the bending of bars and their torsion. Other chapters are devoted to key topics such as the use of the “crystallographical theory of martensite” for SMA modeling, phenomenological and statistical investigations of SMAs, magneto-thermo-mechanical behavior of magnetic SMAs and the fracture mechanics of SMAs. Case studies are provided on the dimensioning of SMA elements offering the reader an additional useful framework on the subject. Contents 1. Some General Points about SMAs. 2. The World of Shape-memory Alloys. 3. Martensitic Transformation. 4. Thermodynamic Framework for the Modeling of Solid Materials. 5. Use of the “CTM” to Model SMAs. 6. Phenomenological and Statistical Approaches for SMAs. 7. Macroscopic Models with Internal Variables. 8. Design of SMA Elements: Case Studies. 9. Behavior of Magnetic SMAs. 10. Fracture Mechanics of SMAs. 11. General Conclusion. Appendix 1. Intrinsic Properties of Rotation Matrices. Appendix 2. “Twinning Equation” Demonstration. Appendix 3. Calculation of the Parameters a, n and Q from the “Twinning” Equation. Appendix 4. “Twinned” Austenite/Martensite Equation. About the Authors Christian Lexcellent is Emeritus Professor at the École National Supérieure de Mécanique et des Microtechniques de Besançon and a researcher in the Department of Applied Mechanics at FEMTO-ST in France. He is a specialist in the mechanics of materials and phase transition and has taught in the subjects of mechanics of continuum media and shape memory alloys. He is also a member of the International Committee of ESOMAT.

Bineshian Hossein Stress Non-uniformity

The mechanical response of concrete/rocks to tension and compression with a special consideration to the effect of bending moment on failure mechanisms is examined in this book. A new technique in strain measurement is developed with application in monitoring of the stability and deformation of underground and surface structures in civil, oil & gas, and mining industries as a substitute for geotechnical/geomechanical instrumentations for practical projects such as tunnels, shafts, caverns, slopes, roads, concrete dams, embankments, boreholes, wells, mine stopes, and open pits. The analytical approach based on the mathematical function of Bineshian strength/failure criterion (2000) led to the development of a new failure criterion, which considers the bending moment generated during compression providing linear and nonlinear envelopes capable of describing most compression and tension test data. New Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) constitutive model parameters are also developed that are applicable to numerical modelling of failure and post-failure response of concrete and rock structures. Empirical Concrete Quality Designation (CQD) is also introduced in this book.

Yunus Mushaga Seismic Performance of Elevators in Hoist Ways

Elevators comprise components prone to earthquakes which should be protected against failures. Elevators installed in and around the Great Rift Valley are subjected to seismic effects. Dynamic Performance of elevators depends mainly on the contact between the guide rails and sliding shoes. Only few studies had been conducted to improve it. This book discusses seismic performance of elevators based on rail-slide shoe-counterweight connections. Lumped parameter dynamic and analytic models are generated for possible causes of nonlinearities; then equations of motions are formulated. To verify the analysis, a case study is conducted based on an elevator installed in Bole area that lies in zone-3 of the seismic map of Addis Ababa. The problem is analyzed with EBCS code and the PSD. It is found that EBCS code is inept to handle random vibrations like the earthquake motion and a code revision is suggested. Moreover, elevators constructed in Ethiopia found not to resist seismic motions larger than 0.1g.

Fundamentals of Earthquake Engineering: From Source to Fragility, Second Edition combines aspects of engineering seismology, structural and geotechnical earthquake engineering to assemble the vital components required for a deep understanding of response of structures to earthquake ground motion, from the seismic source to the evaluation of actions and deformation required for design, and culminating with probabilistic fragility analysis that applies to individual as well as groups of buildings. Basic concepts for accounting for the effects of soil-structure interaction effects in seismic design and assessment are also provided in this second edition. The nature of earthquake risk assessment is inherently multi-disciplinary. Whereas this book addresses only structural safety assessment and design, the problem is cast in its appropriate context by relating structural damage states to societal consequences and expectations, through the fundamental response quantities of stiffness, strength and ductility. This new edition includes material on the nature of earthquake sources and mechanisms, various methods for the characterization of earthquake input motion, effects of soil-structure interaction, damage observed in reconnaissance missions, modeling of structures for the purposes of response simulation, definition of performance limit states, fragility relationships derivation, features and effects of underlying soil, structural and architectural systems for optimal seismic response, and action and deformation quantities suitable for design. Key features: Unified and novel approach: from source to fragility Clear conceptual framework for structural response analysis, earthquake input characterization, modelling of soil-structure interaction and derivation of fragility functions Theory and relevant practical applications are merged within each chapter Contains a new chapter on the derivation of fragility Accompanied by a website containing illustrative slides, problems with solutions and worked-through examples Fundamentals of Earthquake Engineering: From Source to Fragility, Second Edition is designed to support graduate teaching and learning, introduce practising structural and geotechnical engineers to earthquake analysis and design problems, as well as being a reference book for further studies.
