Dr Ingelbrecht’s book consists of a play, a short story and an exegesis that critically explore shame, apology and forgiveness in the context of national commemoration, the Stolen Generations and Kevin Rudd’s apology speech. Particular emphasis is focused on the views of mixed heritage families of Aboriginal-Afghan-Anglo cultural descent. Her play “Sorry” explores how collective memory of the past, including traumatic memory of being taken from one’s family, affects the present in complex and surprising ways. Her exegesis, “Shame and Apology in the Nation-State: Reflections and Remembrance” explores the importance of national commemoration, such as ANZAC Day, in promoting national collective memory, and concludes that a collective annual commemoration on behalf of the nation’s “stolen” people would be a more compelling reconciliatory act than a single apology by a particular prime minister.

Nation and state building have been central during state formations or consolidations in all parts of the world. Third world countries have pursued both projects in a way to destruct diversity and create culturally homogenous polities experiencing inherent problems like denial of people-hood, overlapping citizenship and nationality, and cultural homogeneity. As a remedy, federalism, democracy and multiculturalism are institutional, policy, and politico-psychological innovations. The Ethiopian experience shows plausible centralist-unitary with failed/confused nation-building in pre 1991 witnessing rough state-society relations while the post 1991 has promised a lot along ethno-territorial federal approach. But still, Ethiopia is in its evolutionary stage whereby observable dual state-building approaches: responsive from 1991-2001 and unresponsive since 2001. This shows the retreat to unresponsive state and nation building approaches where national issues are given priority over passing regional self-rule.In light of this, mega-projects like GERD have contributions either to encourage or discourage healthy state and nation building approaches. Accordingly GERD has both contributions.

Following the German reunification process in the 1990s, a new movement appeared in Germany. This movement rejected all forms of nationalism, including the desirability and legitimacy of national communities, borders, and the existence of the nation-state itself. Against the Nation covers the background of this movement—the rise of Neo-Nazism, racist violence, restriction in immigration policies, and growing state power—as well as its urge to organize society around other principles than nationality.By examining the campaigns and documents of the various anti-national tendencies in Germany during this period, Robert Ogman takes a fresh look at the question of nationalism and its relationship to Left politics.

2015 Reprint of Original 1953 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. A psychoanalyst and an anthropologist collaborate in this now-famous formulation. Guilt and shame are feelings resulting from certain childhood experiences. Although the terms appear to have similar meanings and are often used interchangeably, each of the two feelings influences different patterns of behavior and probably contributes to different character types. This book, whose influence and renown have steadily grown since its first publication, is a psychoanalytic and cultural study of shame and guilt. It comprises two essays on the subject. In Part I, Dr. Gerhart Piers, a psychoanalyst, gives concise definitions of these two previously inadequately define terms, and clearly distinguishes between them. He discusses the experiences that can cause guilt or shame in an individual; why some persons develop into guilt-ridden individuals, and others become shame-driven; and the special and sharply different therapeutic considerations that must be given to the person afflicted with guilt or shame. In Part II, Dr. Milton Singer, an anthropologist, applies Dr. Piers' analysis of guilt and shame within the individual to his own study of cultures. The title of the second essay by Singer is "Shame Cultures and Guilt Cultures."

A quarter century after the formation of the Popular Front and a decade since joining the EU, processes of state- and nation-building in Latvia are still on-going. Issues such as citizenship, language policy, minority rights, democratic legitimacy, economic stability, and security all remain objects of vigorous public discussion. The current situation also reflects longer-standing debates on the relationship between state, nation, and sovereignty in Latvian society and polity. By examining different aspects of these relationships, this volume aims to reveal both key turning points and continuities in Latvia's development, thereby helping to inform current debates.

Why do others shame and bully us? Why do we cast blame and shame on others? Where does shame come from?Shame affects every area of our life and relationships. In order to cure shame, we have to find its root source, which may be subtly (yet destructively) hidden in commonly accepted teachings and religious beliefs that wreak havoc on our self-image. Shame speaks candidly about the lies we believe about ourselves — about others — and invites us to shift our understanding so we can begin to heal and live without the baggage of our past. Ask yourself: "What in my thinking about God s view of me, do I need to change so I don t live in shame? Does God really see me as someone who deserve damnation just for being born?"If you sense that the God of the Bible is a God who is both just and loving — who holds us to a holy standard and yet offers us the grace and mercy through His Son to reach that standard — then condemn the shame you feel.Find freedom from the lies you believe.

The United States has long been described as a nation of immigrants, but it is also a nation of religions in which Muslims and Methodists, Buddhists and Baptists live and work side by side. This book explores that nation of religions, focusing on how four recently arrived religious communities--Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, and Sikhs--are shaping and, in turn, shaped by American values. For a generation, scholars have been documenting how the landmark legislation that loosened immigration restrictions in 1965 catalyzed the development of the United States as "a nation of Buddhists, Confucianists, and Taoists, as well as Christians," as Supreme Court Justice Tom Clark put it. The contributors to this volume take U.S. religious diversity not as a proposition to be proved but as the truism it has become. Essays address not whether the United States is a Christian or a multireligious nation--clearly, it is both--but how religious diversity is changing the public values, rites, and institutions of the nation and how those values, rites, and institutions are affecting religions centuries old yet relatively new in America. This conversation makes an important contribution to the intensifying public debate about the appropriate role of religion in American politics and society.Contributors:Ihsan Bagby, University of Kentucky Courtney Bender, Columbia UniversityStephen Dawson, Forest, VirginiaDavid Franz, University of VirginiaHien Duc Do, San Jose State UniversityJames Davison H...

The current era of modernity has been preoccupied with the relationship between religion and state, and with defining and establishing the boundaries between the two spheres. Over the last decades, different ideas have emerged shaping theories of secularization and paving the road for alternative models of state-religion interaction. This study analyzes the evolution of various relationships between religion, state and citizenship in the modern era, based on a comparison of the Turkish and Greek nation-states. Rather than dealing with all dimensions of religion-state relations, this study focuses on identity card discussions, which emerged following Turkish and Greek attempts to refigure or remove the religion section on the identity cards in 2000 and 2004 respectively. The subtexts of these different courses of action are explored vis-à-vis the two states' experiences during the process of constructing the religion-state relationship, which coincides with the construction of citizenship perception in the formation of those nation-states.

Ellen Sapega's study documents artistic responses to images of the Portuguese nation promoted by Portugal's Office of State Propaganda under António de Oliveira Salazar. Combining archival research with current theories informing the areas of memory studies, visual culture, women's autobiography, and postcolonial studies, the author follows the trajectory of three well-known cultural figures working in Portugal and its colonies during the 1930s and 1940s. The book begins with an analysis of official Salazarist culture as manifested in two state-sponsored commemorative events: the 1938 contest to discover the "Most Portuguese Village in Portugal" and the 1940 Exposition of the Portuguese-Speaking World. While these events fulfilled their role as state propaganda, presenting a patriotic and unambiguous view of Portugal's past and present, other cultural projects of the day pointed to contradictions inherent in the nation's social fabric. In their responses to the challenging conditions faced by writers and artists during this period and the government's relentless promotion of an increasingly conservative and traditionalist image of Portugal, José de Almada Negreiros, Irene Lisboa, and Baltasar Lopes subtly proposed revisions and alternatives to official views of Portuguese experience. These authors questioned and rewrote the metaphors of collective Portuguese and Lusophone identity employed by the ideologues of Salazar's Estado Novo regime to...

As the only male head of state to address the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, Alberto Fujimori projected an image as a promoter of progressive policies to improve the condition of women, especially the poor, in society. And indeed, during his tenure, the Peruvian government did pursue such policies in several areas, including poverty relief, population control, and domestic violence. In Intersecting Inequalities, Jelke Boesten uses these policies as case studies, examining the relationship between gender/race/class/ethnic divisions and the state in its project of nation building. Her investigation reveals that policies meant to further women's development and emancipation often reproduced the marginality they were supposed to fight. She also explores the strategies women developed to negotiate with and challenge the state.

For the better part of three and one half centuries, the nation-state has been valued as the logical instrument of governance and citizen protection. The years following the end of the Cold War have convinced certain academics that the process known as globalization is undermining the supposed "unbridled" power of the nation-state. They have argued that new, re-imagined, or reconfigured identities have emerged and been empowered as a result of globalization and therefore demonstrated the hypothesis that the nation-state is losing its sovereignty. This book rethinks and contests this hypothesis by demonstrating that the processes of globalization are not solely responsible for the emergence or re-emergence of the many national/religious identities in the world today. Another and equally as important component is the transformation of the international system from one that is state-driven to one that is supra and sub-state driven. The European Union and the re-conceptualized notion of a 'Europe of regions' has allowed certain regional minorities the ability to reclaim their unique national identities within the backdrop of a globalized society.

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: A, University of Auckland, language: English, abstract: This study addresses the research question; to what extent can nation branding create a competitive advantage for small nations? The concept of nation branding had its origins in the post-Cold War realities of a global neo-liberal economy, occurring as a spin-off from commercial brand management practices. For a small nation, the pressures of risk entailed in foreign exchange and trade transactions, cultural and political vulnerabilities are beyond the capacity of many to control, therefore nation branding which is promoted as giving a competitive advantage to nations, is an attractive consideration. This study examines and discusses the practice and study of nation branding and the possibility of imposing strategic management framework upon what had been largely a marketing-communications led concept. From the literature the characteristics of ineffective nation branding and the ethical considerations entailed in addressing a nation as a 'product' are reviewed. Implications for the stakeholders - the citizens and residents of a nation, and policymakers seeking a competitive advantage for their small nation are also reviewed. Cases of intentional small nation branding in Eastern Europe and New Zealand are compared to a case on Finland, where competitive advantag...

Renowned historical sociologist Charles Tilly wrote many years ago that "banditry, piracy, gangland rivalry, policing, and war-making all belong on the same continuum." This volume pursues the idea by revealing how lawbreakers and lawmakers have related to one another on the shadowy terrains of power over wide stretches of time and space. Illicit activities and forces have been more important in state building and state maintenance than conventional histories have acknowledged. Covering vast chronological and global terrain, this book traces the contested and often overlapping boundaries between these practices in such very different polities as the pre-modern city-states of Europe, the modern nation-states of France and Japan, the imperial power of Britain in India and North America, Africa's and Southeast Asia's postcolonial states, and the emerging postmodern regional entity of the Mediterranean Sea. Indeed, the contemporary explosion of transnational crime raises the question of whether or not the relationship of illicit to licit practices may be mutating once more, leading to new political forms beyond the nation-state.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, , language: English, abstract: By mid-twentieth century, citizenship and democracy had become a grand narrative about cohesion within society as well as about representation and misrepresentation within the modern state. Building a national identity proceeds hand-in-hand with the tasks of building a legitimate state and democratic institutions. In Africa for instance, the issues of democracy and citizenship have come to the centre stage. Many post-independent African governments have attempted to construct and strengthen the national consciousness of their citizens. Such policy formed part of broader projects meant to develop and promote national identity and the ties that bind them to one another as well as emphasize the bonds between state and citizens. However the blurring of such issues as participation, civil society, nation-state, citizenship and democracy, robbed as it were, the public sphere of its 'ideal' status, particularly with regard to its potential as an integrative force in society. While pervasive poverty constitutes the main hindrance to democracy in some countries, in others, the democratic deficit rests on other considerations. Everyday experience of citizenship in post-colonial Algeria has revolved around a sense of what is lacking, the absence of entitlements, respect and dignity shattered by the French colonisers, a sense of longi...

The office of notary public has a long and proud history in our society. Their work is rarely glamorous, but it is so important that the highest courts in the nation routinely accept properly notarized documents as evidence in legal matters. In fact, the law governing notaries gives them the same mission as sworn law enforcement officers, "to serve and protect."

This is a book on the state of social anthropology as an academic discipline in contemporary Zimbabwe. The authors are frustrated and disheartened by a problematic visibility and sluggish growth of the discipline in the country. The book makes an important claim that the future and vibrancy of anthropology in Zimbabwe, lies in how well anthropologists in the country and in the diaspora are able to join efforts in articulating, debating and enhancing its relevance and vitality. The book provides a critical overview and nuanced analyses of the role and continued relevance of the discipline in reading and interpreting the social unfolding of everyday life. It is a vital text for understanding and contextualising histories and trends in the development of social anthropology in Zimbabwe and how anthropologists in the country navigate the tumultuous waters and struggles that have engrossed the discipline since colonial times. The book has the capacity to generate added insights and influence national, continental, and global debates and trends in the field.

"This volume offers significant and new information on and insights into current developments in many different areas and - thanks to a comprehensive bibliography on Eritrea and theoretical foundations of the concept of biopolitics as an appendix - inspirations for further general readings and reflections in the field of political.science." · PeripherieBringing together original, contemporary ethnographic research on the Northeast African state of Eritrea, this book shows how biopolitics - the state-led deployment of disciplinary technologies on individuals and population groups - is assuming particular forms in the twenty-first century. Once hailed as the "African country that works," Eritrea's apparently successful post-independence development has since lapsed into economic crisis and severe human rights violations. This is due not only to the border war with Ethiopia that began in 1998, but is also the result of discernible tendencies in the "high modernist" style of social mobilization for development first adopted by the Eritrean government during the liberation struggle (1961-1991) and later carried into the post-independence era. The contributions to this volume reveal and interpret the links between development and developmentalist ideologies, intensifying militarism, and the controlling and disciplining of human lives and bodies by state institutions, policies, and discourses. Also assessed are the multiple consequences of these policies ...

What role does war play in political development? Our understanding of the rise of the nation-state is based heavily on the Western European experience of war. Challenging the dominance of this model, Blood and Debt looks at Latin America's much different experience as more relevant to politics today in regions as varied as the Balkans and sub-Saharan Africa. The book's illuminating review of the relatively peaceful history of Latin America from the late eighteenth through the early twentieth centuries reveals the lack of two critical prerequisites needed for war: a political and military culture oriented toward international violence and the state institutional capacity to carry it out. Using innovative new data such as tax receipts, naming of streets and public monuments, and conscription records, the author carefully examines how war affected the fiscal development of the state, the creation of national identity, and claims to citizenship. Rather than building nation-states and fostering democratic citizenship, he shows, war in Latin America destroyed institutions, confirmed internal divisions, and killed many without purpose or glory.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Cultural Studies - European Studies, grade: none, Lund University, language: English, abstract: "Europe" is together with "the nation" and "state" one of the basic concepts around which national political debates are organised as Waever and Hansen put it. Within these debates, the term Europe takes different (often oppositional) meanings and nuances, depending on the ideological background and interests of the parties involved. The aim of this thesis is to look at how images of nation and EU are put forward on various political declarations of the two largest parties in Albania, Democratic Party and Socialist Party. Based on Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis, I analyse how these two parties define and negotiate the Albanian-EU relations from a national identity angle. I conclude that there is a European hegemonic discourse emerging in Albania and that relations between the country and EU are represented through metaphors of family and journey. Another conclusion deriving from the analysis is the interchangeable use of the words EU and Europe, where the economic and political union is equated with the historical and geographical name of the continent.

As there exists a variety of different theories, I chose just three of them for this paper. I will introduce their concepts, compare their differencesand try to give a final evaluation of the three concepts.Blum-Kulka/Olshtain1I will begin with the model of Shoshana Blum-Kulka and Elite Olshtain. They first of all classify apology as a speech act, name preconditions that are inevitable for an apology to take place and then list different strategy types.Apologie als a speech act: classificationThe apology belongs to the post-event-acts, i.e. it signals that a certain type of event has already taken place. Moreover, the speaker recognizes the fact that a violation of a social norm has been committed and that the speaker is at least partially involved in its cause. The involvement means a loss of face (= face threatening) for the speaker and is hearer-supportive.21 Blum-Kulka, S., Olshtain, E.; "Requests and Apologies: A Cross-Cultural Study of Speech Act Realization Patterns"in: Applied Linguistics, 5 / 1984. "The fascinating analyses bring out how the importance and the shape of the others in narratives of the nation vary in the unequal structure of the world and the geopolitics of knowledge production . . . the diversity of the essays makes for immensely engaging reading." · American Journal of SociologyTextbooks in history, geography and the social sciences provide important insights into the ways in which nation-states project themselves. Based on case studies of France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Turkey Bulgaria, Russia, and the United States, this volume shows the role that concepts of space and time play in the narration of 'our country' and the wider world in which it is located. It explores ways in which in western European countries the nation is reinterpreted through European lenses to replace national approaches in the writing of history. On the other hand, in an effort to overcome Eurocentric views,'world history' has gained prominence in the United States. Yet again, East European countries, coming recently out of a transnational political union, have their own issues with the concept of nation to contend with. These recent developments in the field of textbooks and curricula open up new and fascinating perspectives on the changing patterns of the re-positioning process of nation-states in West as well as Eastern Europe and the United States in an age of growing importance of transnational organizations and globalization.Hanna Sc...

This dissertation's hypothesis argues that state-building and development are processes that, to function successfully, must be positioned in a complementary interrelationship. This argument has arisen in response to contemporary approaches to state-building and development that are too narrow, so that state-building strategies are often reduced to the establishment of political institutions to the exclusion of other equally necessary structures that include economic, social, and even cultural concerns; in the same sense, development strategies frequently focus on the support and establishment of selected economic structures at the exclusion of political, cultural, and social dimensions. Furthermore, a necessary prerequisite for long-term stability is a guarantee of individual and collective security, and the state requires, in its establishment and development, this aspect in all of its institutions. By taking as a case study the intervention of UNMIK and the EU in Kosovo, the author attempts to show how state-building and development processes are interrelated, and how they might best be applied in the field in order to achieve sustainable outcomes.State-building is defined as the building of state structures, which are role- and rule-oriented institutions within political, economic, social and cultural domains. Development is used in this work to identify the process responsible for making these structures sustainable over time. In the case of Kosovo, in addition to th...

The experiment with neoliberal market-oriented economic policy in Latin America, popularly known as the Washington Consensus, has run its course. With left-wing and populist regimes now in power in many countries, there is much debate about what direction economic policy should be taking, and there are those who believe that state-led development might be worth trying again. Susan Gauss's study of the process by which Mexico transformed from a largely agrarian society into an urban, industrialized one in the two decades following the end of the Revolution is especially timely and may have lessons to offer to policy makers today. The image of a strong, centralized corporatist state led by the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) from the 1940s conceals what was actually a prolonged, messy process of debate and negotiation among the postrevolutionary state, labor, and regionally based industrial elites to define the nationalist project. Made in Mexico focuses on the distinctive nature of what happened in the four regions studied in detail: Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, and Puebla. It shows how industrialism enabled recalcitrant elites to maintain a regionally grounded preserve of local authority outside of formal ruling-party institutions, balancing the tensions among centralization, consolidation of growth, and Mexico's deep legacies of regional authority.

For this generation of Christians in the western world, sexuality is the battle being waged in the culture. Traditional marriage is out the window and every manner of sexual perversity is being pushed as good and healthy and normal on TV, in the movies, by the mainstream media, and by the fathers of our city and nation. At the forefront of this battle is homosexuality. It’s easy for Christians to see the enemy out there—to see all the ways that the modern tolerance machine is tearing down the bulwark of God’s moral law. But what if the culture doesn’t lead the church? What if the church leads the culture? What if the real responsibility lies with us?The Grace of Shame exposes the errors the church has made on sexuality over the last several decades, from failing to understand the sin of effeminacy to promoting the “gay Christian” movement. With reverence for the church universal, and a keen prophetic eye for the sins and failures of our modern church, this book exposes all the ways we have allowed this sin to triumph in the culture at large, and offers hope for the future.

A nonfiction piece about the experience of shame turned toxic and its impact on the psychological and spiritual fate of mankind. This ten-chapter effort intertwines the literary substance of the book with a workbook component, designed to get the reader to move beyond a simple mental and intellectual endeavor and move toward an exercise of personal integration with the material. The experience of shame is universal, a human experience, but an experience that has the potential to turn toxic. Toxic shame can wreak havoc on the psychological development and well-being of the individual. But this author also purports that toxic shame can equally disrupt and damage the spiritual nature of the human experience.Living in The Shadow of Our Fathers is a two-pronged approach, both psychological and spiritual, to understanding what this author believes is a devastating reality besieging the individual of our day. Specifically looking at the father–son relationship, the author focuses on this masculine relationship, his own relationship with his father, in a way to bring awareness and credibility to the author’s insights into what plagues the fathers, the sons, and the men of our present-day societies. By focusing on shame turned toxic, its roots, its causes, its consequences, the author is seeking to draw attention to what he feels is a monumental threat to the fate of humankind. With special emphasis and focus on the spiritual, the author is challenging the reader to open their minds a...

As the French public debates its present diversity and its colonial past, few remember that between 1946 and 1960 the inhabitants of French colonies possessed the rights of French citizens. Moreover, they did not have to conform to the French civil code that regulated marriage and inheritance. One could, in principle, be a citizen and different too. Citizenship between Empire and Nation examines momentous changes in notions of citizenship, sovereignty, nation, state, and empire in a time of acute uncertainty about the future of a world that had earlier been divided into colonial empires.Frederick Cooper explains how African political leaders at the end of World War II strove to abolish the entrenched distinction between colonial "subject" and "citizen." They then used their new status to claim social, economic, and political equality with other French citizens, in the face of resistance from defenders of a colonial order. Africans balanced their quest for equality with a desire to express an African political personality. They hoped to combine a degree of autonomy with participation in a larger, Franco-African ensemble. French leaders, trying to hold on to a large French polity, debated how much autonomy and how much equality they could concede. Both sides looked to versions of federalism as alternatives to empire and the nation-state. The French government had to confront the high costs of an empire of citizens, while Africans could not agree with French lead...
