The theory of relativity enriched physics and astronomy during the 20th century. When first published, relativity superseded a 200-year-old theory of mechanics elucidated by Isaac Newton. It changed perceptions. For example, it overturned the concept of motion from Newton's day, into all motion is relative. Time was no longer uniform and absolute, as related to everyday experience. Furthermore, no longer could physics be understood as space by itself, and time by itself. Instead, an added dimension had to be taken into account with curved space-time. Time now depended on velocity, and contraction became a fundamental consequence at appropriate speeds.

Newton saw that, and he knew that his theory left gravity well described but unexplained. Michael Faraday also saw the problem but could not solve it. Both relied on the ether hypothesis, which was given up at the beginning of the 20th Century in favour of Quantum Theory and the Theory of Relativity. Quantum Theory and the Theory of Relativity, however, rested on serious logical and mathematical mistakes. Max Planck gave no reasons for the individibility of the quantum, and his quantum jump assumed velocity without taking time. Einstein based his theory on a mathematical self-contradiction that remained undiscovered in a whole century. Both theories must be abandoned.In that difficult situation applying Karl Popper´s theory of science leads to a revival of the ether hypothesis in a different shape. If matter is not distinct from ether but is itself a process composed of ether particles, then their elasticity will explain the phenomena of light, of gravity, of the stability of matter, of the vortex shape of galaxies, and several other phenomena as well.

A typical approach to analyze gravitational field of an object is to solve Einstein's field equations, in this approach the assumptions are guided by observations and they help in understanding physical aspects. From mathematical stand point of view we may look for geometric tools. In recent times, tetrad formalisms like Newman-Penrose formalism and Geroch-Held-Penrose formalism are popular to analyze gravitational field. Tetrad formalisms are based on choosing a suitable set of basis vectors for the spacetime under consideration. For using a tetrad formalism the relevant quantities are projected on to the chosen basis and the equations satisfied by them are considered. In this thesis, we have developed some applications of the NP formalism and GHP formalism to electromagnetic gravitational analogies, (i) electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor and (ii) Lanczos potential. The complication involved in the computations compelled us to pay some attention to work in computer aided algebraic computations.

The book is intended to serve as lecture material for courses on relativity at undergraduate level. Although there has been much written on special relativity the present book will emphasize the real applications of relativity. In addition, it will be physically designed with the use of box summaries so as to allow easy access of practical results. The book will be composed of eight chapters. Chapter 1 will give an introduction to special relativity that is the world without gravity. Implications will be presented with emphasis on time dilation and the Doppler shift as practical considerations. In Chapter 2, the four-vector representation of events will be introduced. The bulk of this chapter will deal with flat space dynamics. This will require the generalization of Newton's first and second laws. Some important astronomical applications will be discussed in Chapter 3 and in Chapter 4 some engineering applications of special relativity such as atomic clocks will be presented. Chapter 5 will be dedicated to the thorny question of gravity. The physical motivation of the theory must be examined and the geometrical interpretation presented. Chapter 6 will present astronomical applications of relativistic gravity. These include the usual solar system tests; light bending, time delay, gravitational red-shift, precession of Keplerian orbits. Chapter 7 will be dedicated to relativistic cosmology. Many of the standard cosmological concepts will be introduced, being mathematically simple but conceptually subtle. The concluding chapter will be largely dedicated to the global positioning system as an engineering problem that requires both inertial and gravitational relativity. The large interferometers designed as gravitational wave telescopes will be discussed here.

April 1885 als einziger Sohn Daniel Einsteins, ein jüdischer Religionslehrer, und seiner Ehefrau Sophie in Neuwied am Rhein geboren. Nachdem Daniel Einstein im Jahre 1899 in einer Nervenanstalt verstarb, vermutlich hat er sich das Leben genommen, verlässt der junge Carl Einstein ohne Abitur die Schule, beginnt eine Banklehre, die er nicht abschließt, und schreibt sich 1904 in Berlin an der Universität ein - ein Studium, das er ebenfalls ohne Abschluss beendet. In seiner Studienzeit jedoch beginnt Einstein seine ersten kunsttheoretischen sowie literarischen Arbeiten und hat seine ersten Veröffentlichungen in den Zeitschriften Demokrat und Aktion, herausgegeben von Franz Pfemfert. 1906 beginnt Einstein dann seine Arbeit am Bebuquin, der zwei Jahre später in Teilen in Franz Bleis Zeitschrift Opale abgedruckt wird. Der gerade Anfang Zwanzigjährige gilt ab seiner Veröffentlichung als einer der „führenden Köpfe der Avantgarde". Nach einem Gotteslästerungsprozess in den Zwanzigerjahren beschränkt sich Einstein auf das Veröffentlichen kunsttheoretischer Texte. Seine Arbeit am Bebuquin führt er jedoch zeitlebens weiter. The book is intended to serve as lecture material for courses on relativity at undergraduate level. Although there has been much written on special relativity the present book will emphasize the real applications of relativity. In addition, it will be physically designed with the use of box summaries so as to allow easy access of practical results. The book will be composed of eight chapters. Chapter 1 will give an introduction to special relativity that is the world without gravity. Implications will be presented with emphasis on time dilation and the Doppler shift as practical considerations. In Chapter 2, the four-vector representation of events will be introduced. The bulk of this chapter will deal with flat space dynamics. This will require the generalization of Newton's first and second laws. Some important astronomical applications will be discussed in Chapter 3 and in Chapter 4 some engineering applications of special relativity such as atomic clocks will be presented. Chapter 5 will be dedicated to the thorny question of gravity. The physical motivation of the theory must be examined and the geometrical interpretation presented. Chapter 6 will present astronomical applications of relativistic gravity. These include the usual solar system tests; light bending, time delay, gravitational red-shift, precession of Keplerian orbits. Chapter 7 will be dedicated to relativistic cosmology. Many of the standard cosmological concepts will be introduced, being mathematically simple but conceptually subtle. The concluding chapter will be largely dedicated to the global positioning system as an engineering problem that requires both inertial and gravitational relativity. The large interferometers designed as gravitational wave telescopes will be discussed here.
