The book, made up of three parts, covers a wide spectrum of political economy issues on post-apartheid South Africa. Although the text is mainly descriptive, to explain various areas of the political economy of post-apartheid South Africa, the first and the last parts provide illuminating insights on the kind of society that is emerging during the twenty-one years of democracy in the country. The book discusses important aspects of the political history of apartheid South Africa and the evolution of post-apartheid society, including an important recap of the history of southern Africa before colonialism. The text is a comprehensive description of numerous political economy phenomena since South Africa gained its political independence and covers some important themes that have not been discussed in detail in other publications on post-apartheid South Africa. The book also updates earlier work of the author on policy and law making, land and agriculture, education and training as well as on poverty and inequality in post-apartheid South Africa thereby providing a wide-ranging overview of the socio-economic development approaches followed by the successive post-apartheid administrations. Interestingly, three chapters focus on various aspects of the post-apartheid South African economy: economic policies, economic empowerment and industrial development. Through the lens of the notion of democratic developmental state and taking apartheid colonialism as a point of departure, the ...

In this study, I share Nadine Gordimer's conception of an interregnum as a period of indeterminacy characterized by ambiguities, paradoxes, and contradictions. Consequently, I argue that despite the political transformation in 1994, post-apartheid South African literature reveals that the old binaries and strictures of apartheid have been carried over into the present. Thus, the new landscape in South Africa depicts ambiguities and contradictions that are indicative of a process of interregnum. Accordingly, I argue that post-apartheid South Africa presents a picture of resistance to change and asserts that the process of political transition to black rule would require a redefinition of roles and relationships, self-sacrifice, and re-examination of values. I focus on racial tension, prejudice and exploitation; I examined violence, corruption, political ineptitude, suffering and death as illustrative of disillusionment in the new South Africa. Overall, I show that post-apartheid South Africa is characterized by reversal of expectations, where the old is preventing the birth of the new and that this constitutes a process of interregnum.

This book offers far-reaching insights into perceptions of conflict in South Africa. Claude-Hélène Mayer's approach is remarkable, because she imparts the recollections of numerous people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The author captures the essence of about one-hundred interviews reflecting disparate attitudes towards social changes in the post-apartheid Republic of South Africa. Unexpected statements - for example, with respect to the continued existence of internalized apartheid - are carefully analyzed and hermeneutically understood. At the beginning of the research, presumptions might have raised expectations for the similarity between the narrative interviews. However, it becomes clear during the reading of this work that each interview was itself unique and each created a unique situation between the interviewer and the interviewee, inviting the reader to listen again and again to the spoken and analyzed words. The thorough, months-long field stays, from 1999 until 2004, emphasize the researcher's exhaustive effort better to understand the perspective of the interviewees. In addition to the book's research-related merits, its data can increase the cultural competence of those readers who are interested in information on specific predominant-cultural standards in present day South Africa. Readers can more fully appreciate how the people in South Africa live a special, dynamic form of their unmatched "unity in diversity."

Labour migration from Malawi to South Africa is a ‘century-old phenomenon’. It dates as far back as the 1880s following the establishment of diamond and gold mines. In the period up to the 1980s, this migration took either formal or informal nature whereas in the post-1990 period it became exclusively informal, popularly known as selufu in Malawi. This book is an attempt to shed light on both forms of migration over time. By using the case of Mzimba, one of the major labour migration districts in Malawi, Perspectives of Labour Migration shows that migration, especially in the post-1990 period, remains a preoccupation of the different categories of both men and women in selected areas in the country. A cross-section of Malawians continue to regard emigration to South Africa as a means to an end: a way of fulfilling their heart-felt and life-time goals at household and societal levels. Because of their distinguished and unparalleled determination, these labour migrants continue to ‘flock’ to South Africa in the midst of such challenges as xenophobia, crime, arrests and deportations. The book advances the argument that Malawian labour migrants are purposive and rational human beings who are ready to overcome these challenges, at times using the most improbable means, for example, through the use of mankhwala gha mwabi (luck medicine).

Since the discovery and exploitation of minerals like gold, diamond and copper in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Malawi has played the role of a labour supplier. Malawians were attracted by the relatively higher wages obtaining in the South African mines up to the period of the decline in mine migrancy at the end of the 1980s. Following this decline, a cross-section of Malawians continued to emigrate to South Africa to seek various jobs in the burgeoning informal sector and also for trade purposes. Migration from Malawi to South Africa sheds light on the problems that labour migrants and traders encounter as they are ‘toing’ and ‘froing’ between Malawi and South Africa in pursuit of their respective goals. It shows that migration, which initially was exclusively done for wage employment, is becoming more complex by the day. This is a result of the infusion of elements of commercial migration, smuggling and human trafficking. The book advances the argument that the numbers of migrants to South Africa increased in the post-1994 period partly as a result of mal-administration by the successive democratically-elected governments in Malawi. This development weakened Malawi’s otherwise promising economy and impoverished the rural masses. The book ‘sees’ forlorn hope in the future of labour migrants and traders, unless the Malawi Government starts to genuinely have the welfare of the populace at heart! The book is relevant and...

Critical to the discussion will be the role played by the National Party government, particularly relating to the creation of the Republic of South Africa in 1961, withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Nations in the same year, the 1961 General Election and the government's racial policy. The function of the United Party, as the party of Official opposition, will also be scrutinised, together with the role of the Liberal Party and the Progressive Party. Analysis of the ideologies of the African resistance movements, including the African National Congress, with Umkhonto we Sizwe, and the Pan-Africanist Congress, with Poqo, will further reveal reasons for the adoption of extreme opposing attitudes. Moreover, these diametric attitudes were subjected to influence from, and response to, international events both within Africa and globally.

Isaac Williams Wauchope (1852-1917), also known as Citashe and Dyoba, is a Xhosa writer and public figure who lived in South Africa before the apartheid era. He represents a new class of elite Xhosas and the first generation of school people and born Christians. This book provides us with a window into the lives and activities of the early Xhosa school people and how they prevailed in the South African society before the onslaught of apartheid. Generally, we only know about the struggles of the subjugated black people in South Africa during the aparheid era, trying to restore their lost glory. There are few published works that reveal for us the status and glory of black people in South Africa before apartheid. Indeed through Wauchope we see free, highly respectable and independent intellectuals who competed well with their white counterparts and existed on the same social level as the latter. This book reveals the writings and intellectual debates of the new Xhosa school elite of the eighteen hundreds and early nineteen hundreds, the pioneers of today's democratic South Africa.

Into the Cannibal's Pot: Lessons for America from post-Apartheid South Africa is a polemical work anchored in history, reality, fact, and the political philosophy of classical liberalism. It is a manifesto against mass society, arguing against raw, ripe, democracy, here (in the US), there (in South Africa), and everywhere. Into the Cannibal's Pot follows Russell Kirk's contention that true freedom can be found only within the framework of a social order. It is a reminder that, however imperfect, civilized societies are fragile. They can, and will, crumble in culturally inhospitable climes. The tyranny of political correctness, so unique to the West plays a role in their near-collapse. Advanced societies don't just die; they either wither from within, or, like South Africa, are finished off by other western societies. Ilana Mercer delivers a compelling book; it is required reading for thinking people who care about the destiny of western civilization.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1,0, University of Wisconsin-Madison (Economics), course: Economics 477: Economic Development of Africa, language: English, abstract: This paper investigates the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) program in South Africa and its economic justification by analyzing the trends in both, intra- and interracial inequality, since the implementation of BEE. Even though inequality is driven by many different factors, this paper attempts to analyze whether BEE was able to effectively reduce inequality in the way that it was intended. My findings suggest that BEE might have helped to reduce inequality between different races, but that it increased inequality among black people.During Apartheid, black people were excluded from major parts of South Africa's economy. This resulted in an unequal income distribution in South Africa. Even after Apartheid ended in 1994 income was distributed unequally between races. In order to reduce this inequality and equalize opportunities between the different races in South Africa, the government implemented an affirmative action program called Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) in 2003. In this case and in the following sections, the word "black" defines a racial group, including Africans, coloreds and Indians and can thus be used as synonym for "non-whites." BEE introduced a scorecard which rates companies based on their economic inclusion of black peopl...

South Africa is one of the African countries that is endowed with a lot of resources, both human and minerals. However due to activities such as increase in corruption, gross mismanagement and adverse policies of various governments, these resources have not been optimally utilised. One of the most pressing problems facing the South African economy is unemployment, which has been erratic over the past few years. This study examined the impact of economic growth on unemployment, using quarterly time series data for South Africa for the period 1994 to 2012. The study resulted in the following policy recommendation: South African government should re-direct its spending towards activities that directly and indirectly promote creation of employment and decent jobs; a conducive environment and flexible labour market policies or legislations without impediments to employment creation should be created; and lastly government should prioritise industries that promote labour intensive. All this will help in absorbing large pools of the unemployed population thereby reducing unemployment in South Africa.

Post-apartheid South Africa is a good ‘laboratory’ to study ‘race’ related topics. This unique country gives us the opportunity to look at the new relationships between the different groups (Whites, Blacks, Indians and Coloureds) that were forcibly segregated during the colonial and the apartheid eras. Racism did not end with the abrogation of apartheid laws in the beginning of the 1990’s. Even if the country looks today superficially changed, evolution of mentalities and perceptions between the different groups are slow. Racism still exists but is sometimes concealed behind new politically correct statements and practices. Most of environmental legislations and philosophies during the colonial and apartheid eras were orientated towards discrimination of non-white groups, both in urban planning and protected areas making. Today what can be done to manage this legacy? Our aim is to study coastal environmental conflicts in Zululand to look at current race relations, in a particular geographical context of urban, rural and marginal areas, coveted by various political and capitalist interests at various levels, e.g. international, national and local.

When one spoke about 'the racial question' in pre-apartheid South Africa, one was not referring to conflicts between blacks and whites, but to frictions between the two white groups, namely the Afrikaners and the English-speaking. This book endeavors to explore how the Boer and the British dealt with their cultural differences and how this was reflected in their identity constructions, to examine how each group carved out their ambiguous identity(ies) as 'white Africans' at the beginning of the twentieth century and to evaluate how they balanced the ambivalence in their European-African heritage and commitments. By examining the portrayal of white identity in the writing of pre-apartheid South African authors, more specifically in the writings of William Charles Scully, Francis Carey Slater, Louis Leipoldt, Pauline Smith, Sarah Gertrude Millin, Roy Campbell, Laurens van der Post and Alan Paton, the goal of this book is to bring to light this negotiation and development of white identity as well as to reveal and analyze the identity constructions of Afrikaners and Anglo South Africans in pre-apartheid English literature.

This book on rights, entitlements and citizenship in post-apartheid South Africa shows how the playing field has not been as levelled as presumed by some and how racism and its benefits persist. Through everyday interactions and experiences of university students and professors, it explores the question of race in a context still plagued by remnants of apartheid, inequality and perceptions of inferiority and inadequacy among the majority black population. In education, black voices and concerns go largely unheard, as circles of privilege are continually regenerated and added onto a layered and deep history of cultivation of black pain. These issues are examined against the backdrop of organised student protests sweeping through the country's universities with a renewed clamour for transformation around a rallying cry of 'Black Lives Matter'. The nuanced complexity of this insightful analysis of the Rhodes Must Fall movement elicits compelling questions about the attractions and dangers of exclusionary articulations of belonging. What could a grand imperialist like the stripling Uitlander or foreigner of yesteryear, Sir Cecil John Rhodes, possibly have in common with the present-day nimble-footed makwerekwere from Africa north of the Limpopo? The answer, Nyamnjoh suggests, is to be found in how human mobility relentlessly tests the boundaries of citizenship.

There were two battles against apartheid - a political campaign and a media war. The political story has been told, and now you can read about the media effort. As South Africa marks in 2014 its 20th anniversary as a democracy, its transformation is still hailed as a "miracle." Most of the credit for the region's massive changes is awarded to towering leaders like the late Nelson Mandela. But the freedom fighters didn't achieve it alone--they had active solidarity from a global anti-apartheid movement, with a media component that showcased the struggle and kept it visible worldwide. "News Dissector" Danny Schechter reveals the inside story of what he calls a "Media War" in When South Africa Called, We Answered. The impact of international migration, both South-South as well as South-North, on the economic, social and political life of the people in Eastern and Southern Africa [was] not well documented and studied,- and 'the evidence-base for policy on migration and development [was] very weak.' With this in mind, OSSREA's invitation to conduct a study on international migration in Africa had the following objectives: To analyze the nature and type of South-South migration, focusing on issues, such as brain gain and/or brain drain, remittance flows, technical know-how transfers, violations of the right of African migrants and gender dimensions of migration; To investigate the dynamics of migration from Eastern and Southern Africa to the Arab Gulf States as well as to developed countries, focusing on the skills of migrants, brain gain and/or drain, remittance flows, technical know-how transfers, violations of the rights of African migrants and gender dimension of migrants; and to assess the successes, impediments and challenges of African international migrants from Eastern and Southern Africa and to formulate policy recommendations to maximize the gains and minimize the costs associated with international migration in Africa.

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,0, European Business School - International University Schloß Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel, language: English, abstract: Private equity companies are seen as high risk investment funds, trying to gain high returns on their investments in a period of around three to seven years. Even if the private equity industry has played an important role in growth or as an external financing source of established companies as well as newly-established companies, private equity investors are not seen as sustainable value creators. In various occasions, private equity funds are even declared as a greedy instrument to earn fast money. In order to analyse whether private equity companies create value in a sustainable way, this study compares the performance of private equity backed initial public offerings (IPOs) with non-private equity backed IPOs. Moreover, it analyses whether private equity backed IPOs outperform the market. This study evaluates the performance of private equity backed IPOs by performing two separate empirical analyses: one focusing on the UK private equity market - the largest private equity market in Europe - and one focusing on the entire European market. The research conducts a quantitative analysis of secondary data, more specifically by using stock prices of private equity backed firms, non-private equity backed firms and applicable benchmark market indices. ...

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 3,0, University of Trier, language: English, abstract: South Africa in the year 2009 represents the home of approximately 45 million people of different origin, religions, cultures and languages. Its population is, consequently, anything but homogenous neither from a cultural nor, and especially, from a linguistic point of view.In order to understand how these exceptional diversities could develop, it is absolutely essential to review the country's history first. Like many African countries, South Africa is exceedingly characterized by the colonial times as well as the apartheid era. Major influence derives from Dutch and British colonies, which is still reflected in contemporary daily routine. Furthermore, several wars and changes of government result in a country of little economic power and discordance about major governmental issues.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,3, University of Würzburg, language: English, abstract: 2014 has been a year for the record books concerning private equity. Global investment exits through initial public offerings accumulated two trillion US dollar and about 500 billion US dollar have been collected in private equity funds for future investments. These impressive numbers show how important private equity has become in the international financial sector and China has evolved to one of the biggest private equity markets in the world. This raises the question of who is in power in the Chinese market? Giants like Goldman Sachs, Blackstone or Carlyle dominate the international market. So how are the domestic Chinese private equity firms doing? When China first heard of private equity in the early-1990s, it was already one of the biggest investment markets in the West, mainly in America. Hence, American companies had nearly no competitors in China and made fortunes in this recently opened market. Nevertheless, domestic firms developed quickly and challenged foreign companies to a duel. This paper will be divided into two parts, firstly it will show the development of Chinese and foreign private equity companies and their shares on the Chinese market. The second part then will try to give an impression on possible reasons for the mentioned development. There won't be any further explanations about private equ...

She spent 32 years working in Elim Hospital, founded by the Swiss Mission in an impoverished rural area in North-Eastern South Africa. Together with her African colleague and friend, Selina Maphorogo, she founded the Care Groups, village self-help groups working for better health in their communities. The movement is still active after more than 30 years, and now has around 2,000 members, mostly women, in over 200 villages. Erika Sutter has received numerous international honours and awards for her pioneering work, including the award 'Woman of the Year' in 1984 from the South African newspaper 'The Star', and an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel. For the creation of this biography, Erika Sutter spent many hours with the author, her friend Gertrud Stiehle, telling the story of her long life ñ vividly, with a sharp eye for social issues, a hint of self-irony, and dry wit. Her account does not ignore events in the wider world. She experienced life on the Swiss-German border during the Second World War, and her years of working in South Africa were those when the apartheid policies of the South African Government were becoming more and more repressive, affecting many aspects of life in the country.

Domestic armed conflicts in countries such as Central African Republic and others have at various times created bilateral and regional tensions. The current status quo in east of the DRC came from foreign rebels' use of its territory as a base for attacking their own home countries and the Congolese Government's incapability to secure its own borders. Leading to recurring armed conflicts. This study documents the reintegration based on a sample of ex-combatants living in South Africa and in the DRC. Using data from 50 Congolese ex-combatants aged between 18 and 50 years, this study analyses the challenges faced by the DRC to reintegrate its demobilised former soldiers into the labour market and provide them with livelihoods, depending on their skills and training. The structural landscape of violence in South Africa, formed during years of colonialism and cemented during apartheid, has had pervasive, deep institutional and psycho-cultural effects, which still reverberate in the macro political economy of South Africa today. This resonating structural violence is visible in unemployment, crime, migration, HIV/AIDS, social spending and service delivery rates. This book identifies the obstacles to effective governance, service delivery and environmental management in three large South African municipalities. The problems are then mapped in the context of South Africa’s historical development. It is surmised that the effects from historical patterns of embedded structural violence contribute to the environmental management challenges within local municipalities in South Africa today. The book concludes with a discussion on organizational and institutional learning as a policy option to address shortcomings in human and institutional capacity, which undermine local government, environmental management, democracy and development. The intended audience for this book is scholars, students and government officials.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 1,0, , language: English, abstract: The market for retail investment products is traditionally dominated by saving deposits, various types of funds, and life insurance products. The liberalization of the capital market in the 1990s and the foundation of option exchanges gave more investors access to derivative products. Financial institutions started to manufacture investment products as a combination of zero-coupon bonds or shares and derivatives. Structured equity products are "wrapped" into bond-like structures, receive security identification numbers, and are traded on regulated markets. Issuers quote bid and ask prices to make the products available for buying and selling activities. Investors pay a notional amount upfront in the form of a lump sum and get access to payoff profiles otherwise not offered in the private wealth management market. Financial institutions distribute the structured equity products through their retail advisory channels in which intermediaries give personal advice to retail clients about the attractiveness of products. The financial market crises in the year 2008 made several poor selling practices evident and revealed the existence of questionable structured equity products in the wealth management of financial institutions. The lack of strict governance rules in the issuing...

To understand the policy environment within which refugees establish and operate their enterprises in South Africa’s informal sector, this report brings together two streams of policy analysis. The first concerns the changing refugee policies and the erosion of the progressive approach that characterized the immediate post-apartheid period. The second concerns the informal sector policy, which oscillates between tolerance and attempted destruction at national and municipal levels. While there have been longstanding tensions between foreign and South African informal sector operators, an overtly anti-foreign migrant sentiment has increasingly been expressed in official policy and practice. This report describes the strategies being used to turn South Africa into an undesirable destination for refugees, including the setting up of additional procedural, administrative and logistical hurdles; the undercutting of court judgments affirming the right of asylum-seekers and refugees to employment and self-employment; ensuring that protection is always temporary by making it extremely difficult for refugees to progress to permanent residence and eventual citizenship; and restricting opportunities to pursue a livelihood in the informal sector. The authors conclude that the protection of refugee rights is likely to continue to depend on a cohort of non-governmental organizations prioritizing migrant livelihood rights and being willing and able to pursue time-consuming and costly litigati...

The site of industrial struggle is shifting. Across the Global South, peasant communities are forced off the land to live and work in harsh and impoverished conditions. Inevitably, new methods of combating the spread of industrial capitalism are evolving in ambitious, militant and creative ways. This is the first book to theorise and examine the present and future shape of global class struggles.Immanuel Ness looks at three key countries: China, India and South Africa. In each case he considers the broader historical forces at play - the effects of imperialism, the decline of the trade union movement, the class struggle and the effects of the growing reserve army of labour. For each case study, he narrows his focus to reveal the specifics of each grassroots insurgency: export promotion and the rise of worker insurgency in China, the new labour organisations in India, and the militancy of the miners in South Africa. This is a study about the nature of the new industrial worker in the Global South; about people living a terrifying, precarious existence - but also one of experimentation, solidarity and struggle.

Africans, their struggles with the European for political justice and freedom, and their denial of equality in the South Africa Parliamentary system and its society. John used letters written by European South African Politicians to show the fights of the indigenous South Africans and what they were up against, such as Percy A. Molteno, James Rose-Innes, J. X. Merriman, and Sir Alfred Milner, British Governor of Cape Colony, who wrote to Rev. James Green on December 12, 1901: ".As for the indigenous South Africans, one thing which appears to me quite evident is that a distinction must be drawn in the case of the natives between personal and political rights. A political equality of white and black is impossible.in any South African Parliament the interests of the blacks should be specially represented.this could be best done by white men, not elected but nominated for that particular purpose. As regards to personal rights, I hold that those of the natives should be just as clearly defined, and just as sacred as those of the white men. Parading respectability: The cultural and moral aesthetics of the Christmas Bands Movement in the Western Cape, South Africa is an intimate and incisive portrait of the Christmas Bands Movement in the Western Cape of South Africa. Drawing on her own on background as well as her extended research study period during which she became a band member and was closely involved in its day-to-day affairs, the author, Dr Sylvia Bruinders, documents this centuries-old expressive practice of ushering in the joy of Christmas through music by way of a social history of the coloured communities. In doing so, she traces the slave origins of the Christmas Bands Movement, as well as how the oppressive and segregationist injustices of both colonialism and apartheid, together with the civil liberties afforded in the South African Constitution (1996) after the country became a democracy in 1994 have shaped the movement.

The social and political transition that came with the fall of apartheid in South Africa had tremendous significance for the media. The media were actively engaged in the discussion of what role they should serve in the newfound democracy. This book is the result of a research project that scrutinzed more than 100 articles that appeared in the South African press in the post-apartheid years 1996-99. Two main discourses were identified: the watchdog discourse and the nation-building discourse. Those who propagated the watchdog discourse - mainly media representatives - favoured classic libertarian press ideals; while those who propagated the nation-building discourse - mainly government representatives - favoured social responsibility ideals. On the basis of the analysis, the research challenges the dichotomy between watchdog and nation-building discourses. The author discusses how the philosophy of communitarianism might serve as a model to maintain the interests of both the media and national development in an emerging media context. In this perspective, the book is of interest to anyone studying the role of the media in transitional societies.

Fractured Lives is a memoir of one woman's experiences as a documentary filmmaker covering the wars in southern Africa during the 1980s and 1990s. Part autobiography, part history, part social commentary and part war story, it offers a female perspective on a traditionally male subject. Growing up in South Africa in a politically active family, Toni went to Britain as an exile in 1965 in the wake of the famous Rivonia Trial, and in the years to follow, became a filmmaker. Despite constant difficulties fighting for funding and commissions from television broadcasters, and the prejudices of working in a male-dominated industry, Toni made several remarkable films in Mozambique and Angola. These bear witness to the silent victims of war, particularly the women and children. Fractured Lives paints the changing landscape of southern Africa: Namibian independence and the end of the war in Mozambique bring hope - but also despondency. Yet there is also the possibility of redemption, of building new lives for the victims of war. In its final chapters, Fractured Lives traces the power of survival and the opportunities for new beginnings. Fractured Lives concludes with Toni's return to South Africa after nearly three decades in exile. However, the joy following the demise of apartheid is tempered by the poignancy of returning to a place that for so long had existed in her dreams alone and the realization that home will forever lie somewhere else.
