Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: Small and medium enterprises contribute to more than 50% of GDP in the developed economies. Yet, in developing markets, such as Kazakhstan, this sector remains untapped since SMEs are considered risky and not transparent enough to be financed by banks.Meanwhile, there is a lot of discussion whether SMEs in Kazakhstan can withstand the rivalry from their competitors within the newly formed Eurasian Economic Union. Remaining a threat for weak SMEs, the economic union is also a great opportunity for exporting SMEs in Kazakhstan to expand their businesses through exporting their products and services to the member states of the union. The study aims at identifying the challenges that are faced by the exporting SMEs in Kazakhstan when applying for banking products. Out of these challenges, a number of recommendations are developed for the banking industry in Kazakhstan. The results of the quantitative analysis applied in the study reveal that high interest rates and bank fees, documentary requirements and communication issues are the main challenges that are faced by the exporting SMEs in Kazakhstan. Therefore, banks are recommended to improve their risk assessment methodologies, to provide the SMEs with training programs and to improve their communication with the exporting SMEs.The findings of the study and the proposed recommendations can be...

Trude G. Dahl Religion and politics

Hindu nationalism became a powerful societal force in India during the 1990s. The political success of Hindu nationalism seemed to signal the importance of religion to Indian politics. As Hindu nationalism grew in popularity and strength it also became the object of scholarly interest. In the post-colonial era there has been a strong impetus to revise established knowledge of Indian religion and society. This book attempts to show how the revisionist tendencies of the post-colonial era were reflected in Western scholarship on Hindu nationalism in the 1990s. One scholarly work on Hindu nationalism from the period is being analysed. Viewing that work in light of broader scholarly discourses of the late 20th century, this book addresses topics like orientalism, essentialism, social constructionism, and modernity. The book brings about a discussion of scholarly trends prevalent in the late 20th century and the implications of these trends for the study of religion. The book should be of interest to scholars, students, and others who are engaged in studies of contemporary India or in studies of religion.

Anastasia Shalonya Internationalization of SMEs and foreign institutional environment

Internationalization of SMEs is a new direction for research and more and more scholars focus their attention on this phenomenon. Since SMEs comprise the vast majority of the population of firms in Europe, and barriers to internationalization are falling, researchers are increasingly examining SME internationalization issues. However, knowledge about the impact of the foreign country's institutional context on internationalization of SMEs is still rather limited. The research devoted to the influence of institutional environment on the degree of SMEs internationalization is restricted in the form of examining domestic environment that pushes SMEs to go international. The host institutional context may significantly challenge firm's internationalization efforts, though. For the successful internationalization, SMEs should be aware of the challenges that arise from insufficiently developed institutions. These challenges are only limitedly explored.

John Ackah, Sylvester Vuvor The challenges facing SMEs in accessing credit (loans) in Ghana

The Challenges facing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Obtaining Credit in Ghana, highlights the issues facing Ghana's SMEs in their quest to accessing loans from financial institutions to undertake various business activities all in the name of creating jobs and the ultimate goal of helping to reduce poverty. There are financial institutions that are willing to provide credit facilities to SMEs but Ghanaian SMEs are not able to meet the requirements of these financial institutions even though they are really in need of the loan. Chief among the requirements demanded by these financial institutions is collateral. The nature of collateral in this part of the world is mostly landed property, which most SMEs cannot provide to cover the amount they really need. As a result, some of these SMEs settle for an amount far less than what they truly require to really drive their business agenda. This book thus takes a look at these challenges from the perspective of the Ghanaian SME operators.

The latter, which is a tuning to globalization, is not possible for SMEs to go through without proper successful and efficient implementation of km processes. In other words: If SMEs wish to prosper, they must tailor knowledge management's processes based on their objectives and strategies, so, to make them achievable.

Mohamud Mohamed Salad National Security Dynamics in Somalia in the post-Siad Barre era

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, , course: master of science in strategic studies, language: English, abstract: Somalia was one of the first states to crumble in the post-cold war era. This study seeks to explain the destruction of the Somali state from a security perspective, arguing that a plethora of factors including the political economy of class and regional dynamics underscored the dissolution of the Somali nation-state and that the emergence of political Islam to fill the political vacuum configured the pattern of security challenges facing the country. In doing so, this study utilizes the qualitative research design premised on the interview technique as the main data collection method. What is clear from this study is that to explain the destruction of Somalia and its security abyss we must probe deeper to uncover the points of fracture of the Somali social order, as well as external factors obscured by an emphasis on clan tensions by media and scholarly reportage. Hence, explaining Somalia's dissolution and its attendant security challenges is a contribution to the ongoing project of theorizing the global disintegration of nation-states in the post-Cold War era. All things considered, it is hoped that this study will provide professionals and scholars insights on the challenges of African security in the Twenty-First century.

This paper examines how higher interest rates in public micro-finance in Tanzania are affecting the growth of SMEs. We argue that these financial institutions can help in giving credit and loans to the SMEs and entrepreneurs for different project implementation and growth but yet the fact may arise out that many SMEs are unable to meet the tough Banks requirements and interest rates currently in place. We realized that even though the project might be, neither too productive, nor too unproductive, reducing such interest rate is inevitable, with the SMEs being involved in borrower selection only. We further, identified statistically the present credit delivery and status of access to these institutions, understanding of interest in loans and SMEs distribution in the country.

The challenges of the 1990s include a protracted domestic economic downturn, and the need to begin redefining Japan's international profile in the face of an increasingly powerful China, an ever more desperate North Korea, and shifts in the shared responsibility built into the US-Japan security treaty.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: During the last decades, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been one of the major driving forces of worldwide economic growth, employment and prosperity. Moreover, they are considered to be of high importance in ensuring a friction-free adaptation to economical, technological, and social changes. Especially European economies, foremost Germany being the third largest economy in the world, highly depend on this class of companies as important contributors to the increase of living standards, productivity and competitiveness. As Hommel & Schneider (2003) conclude, any structural problem affecting this mass of economic 'backbone' businesses is thus likely to cause macroeconomic frictions to an economy as a whole Vice versa, it seems reasonable to argue that negative macro-level economic performance can be easily caused by an underperforming SME sector. A glance at the current business environment gives evidence that SMEs are navigating in a dramatic time of economic turmoil: Corporate bankruptcy in Germany e.g. has more than doubled during the last 10 years to a record level of almost 40,000 filed cases in 2003. Bankruptcy rates (i.e. 'Insolvenzquote') have raised to a peak in 2001 since the 1980's - a level, which has not been touched even in times of economic downturn within the last 15 years. The near future of many European SMEs is embossed by big threats and opportunities triggered by the upcoming EU member extensi...

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Economic and Social History, grade: 1,3, Hamburg University of Technology (DepartmentofTechnologyandInnovationManagement), 19 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The Indian economy continues to achieve stellar growth. The accepted opinion is that the process of economic liberalization that started in the late 1980's in India has come to fruition, and, combined with a strong resource base (mainly the strong knowledge base of trained engineers combined with innovation brought in by multinational companies), continues to drive the growth in recent years. The present work provides a brief background of the process of liberalization, both its successes and challenges. The work goes on to describe the effect of economic liberalization on the Indian automotive industry. The transformation of the automotive industry in the post-liberalization years is nothing short of dramatic. This transformation is discussed using different parameters, and some critical issues that face the industry in India are conjectured. The work may be taken as an introductory- to middle-level reading on the Indian automotive industry, and can form the basis of a detailed critical examination of important issues facing the industry today.

Manuel Kaar The Impact of Participation in Publicly Funded R.D Projects on Firm Competitiveness

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 5.5, University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, language: English, abstract: This thesis studies the involvement of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in publicly funded research and development (R&D) projects. SMEs represent 99% of all companies in Europe and are important drivers of innovation, yet many lack the necessary resources to engage in formal research activities. Providing these firms with the possibility to make use of public funding programmes for R&D projects therefore constitutes a way of stimulating them to innovate. Reviews of such programmes, however, show that SME participation is frequently lower than desired by policy makers. This raises the question of the benefits SMEs can gain from such projects and the barriers that negatively influence their ability to participate. The author hypothesises that taking part in publicly funded R&D projects can positively influence an SME's competitiveness through a specific set of advantages gained from participation. The second hypothesis is that companies with previous experience in such projects evaluate their participation positively. Finally, the author puts forward that a number of specific barriers limit SMEs' ability to participate. The hypotheses were tested by means of an online survey among Swiss SMEs in the field of renewable energy, as well as interviews with rep...

Nabila EL-Gabalawi Peacebuilding in application of the work of NGOs in conflict areas

Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, University of Birmingham (International Development Department- School of Public Policy), course: Conflict, Humanitarian Aid and Social Reconstruction , language: English, abstract: This paper illustrates the meaning of peacebuilding as a comprehensive sustainable process that aims at resolving the conflicts, which spread widely in the post Cold War era within different nations and among them. Peacebuilding as a sustainable process requires the intervention of different actors at the local, national and international levels and requires the cooperation between them to coordinate their roles in the post conflict situation. This paper also discusses specifically the role of NGOs as one of these important actors in the international community and the different actions that carried out by them that help in providing a healthy environment for sustaining peace and development at the same time. However, linking peace with aid by NGOs in most of the cases added more damage in the targeted post conflict countries instead of depleting it. Discussed within are the challenges that have been met by different NGOs at different levels when trying to incorporate peacebuilding into development and while intervening in the field.

"The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD marked the beginning of a new era in Christianity. For the first time, doctrines were organized into a single creed. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers did most of their writing during and after this important event in Church history. Unlike the previous era of Christian writing, the Nicene and Post-Nicene era is dominated by a few very important and prolific writers. In Volume I of the 14-volume collected writings of the Nicenes and Post-Nicenes (first published between 1886 and 1889), readers will discover some of the writings of Saint Augustine, recognized as a great religious figure by many Christian sects. He is the patron of the Augustinian monks, who live their lives according to the values found in Augustine¿s writings. In the Confessions, Augustine speaks honestly about his sins as a youth and the saving grace he discovered when he found God. In the Letters, the true personality of Augustine shines through. He is one of the major theological resources of his time, and so through his correspondences, audiences can see what issues plagued the newly unified Christian religion and come to know the man who helped shape Western religion as we know it."

Moreover, this study provides recommendations in order to minimize or overcome those barriers. Existing studies are discussing the market entry of big companies such as of Siemens AG and Robert Bosch GmbH in India, but issues of small and medium-sized companies are neglected. This academic void is closed by this study with the help of the implementation of questionnaires and interviews. Based on these primary sources, market entry barriers for German small and medium-sized companies in India are identified as well as analysed, and recommendations to reduce or even overcome them are presented.

Waltraud Gerda Lassner Management Consulting at Faculties of Design - Opportunities and Limitations

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: This dissertation deals with reforms in the German system of higher education and investigates, whether these processes could be facilitated by management consultants. The main focus is placed on design faculties. The investigation of the subject is based on a case study approach. The starting point within this three-part work is an introduction into the system of higher education in Germany by providing information on the political, legal and financial background, the structure and types and present challenges. The second part moves the investigation towards the design faculties. An analysis of design practice and education reveals both the situation design faculties find themselves in and initial reform attempts. How the policy of reform could be followed through successfully is answered in part three by presenting relevant consulting activities and projects in the field of higher education. Opportunities and limitations, which can be expected from an involvement of management consultants round off this part. German higher education seemed to be in a continuous cycle of crises and is still seen as having need of reforms in the face of future challenges. As statistical data reveal institutions had and still have to cope with a decrease in federal funding and with an increase of students. In the face of future challenges such as internationalisation and globalisation they need to position themselves effectively by keeping in mind their strengths. The n...

Karl Luis Neumann Can Transition Countries on the Western Balkan utilise the momentum of SMEs to facilitate economic growth.

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,7, Berlin School of Economics, language: English, abstract: Small and medium sized enterprises (SME) represent 99,8% of all businesses in the European Union (EU), provide two-thirds of the non-financial sector employment and account for 85% of the new jobs created in the past five years. Looking at the other side of the Atlantic, the situation is not very different: in the United Stated of America (USA) SMEs account for 99,7% of all firms and 48% of total private-sector employment. It is fair to say that SMEs are the backbone of the two largest economic areas of the world. Considering the enormous share that SMEs have in these economies, it becomes clear that the success of an economy largely depends on the development of its SMEs. This paper aims at examining the impact of SMEs on the development of economies in transition. Specifically, the transition countries of the Western Balkan (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYRM)) will be subject of this paper. Due to the limited word count, Serbia will be used as example since it is the largest economy in the region. The question to be answered is: "Can transition countries on the Western Balkan utilise the economic momentum of SMEs to facilitate economic growth? Evidence from Serbia".

Examination Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Sociology - Political Sociology, Majorities, Minorities, , course: Develiopment Economics, language: English, abstract: Due to the invasion and occupation of Tibet by China, the first wave of Tibetan refugees seeking asylum came to India and neighbouring countries like Bhutan and Nepal in 1959. At the time, India, Nepal and Bhutan were economically and socially backward countries. India opened up its economy in the 1990's and it paved the way for socio-economic development of the country. Tibetan migrants were also able to use this opportunity for their own growth and economic development. The rise in awareness levels helped Tibetan migrants realize that they could further advance their individual and community growth by seeking job opportunities abroad. Thus, the first wave of migrants left for North America, Canada and European countries in early 1990's and they were able to send home remittances in dollars and pounds which fetched good exchange rate in India against the rupees. The flow of remittances from abroad enhanced the livelihood of Tibetan refugees in India and triggered a chain migration to the west. In this study, it focuses on the aspect of remittance and development on Tibetan refugee who has been settled in India for more than 5 decades and relies on remittances. The future progress will increase the competitive advantage for both countries and attract MNC's from all over the world to invest. A MNC has to be aware of various challenges that both countries pose, such as government interventions, underdeveloped infrastructures or copyright violations. Hence, MNC's need efficient strategies in order to compete and improve their position in these markets. Particularly the implementation of an efficient innovation and knowledge strategy has become a crucial aspect. Effectiveness in local product adjustments, globalizing R&D, tailoring talent management, mastering the complexity of global value chains, and managing risks are success factors that have to be considered. This, however, is not an easy task. Multiple failures of MNC's in China and India demonstrate that it is important to adapt a company's strategy to the local customer needs and to obtain a competitive advantage in the field of innovation. The purpose of this master thesis is to discuss all these aspect...
