Kassie Melkamu Might and Realities of Child Trafficking

All legal documents, that are considered in this research work, underline that, child trafficking is a worth fighting and a criminal act. But it is amazing that, although there are numerous legal instruments in the country the incidence, nature, effect and realities of child trafficking is unutterably outrageous. Like other parts of the country, Bahir Dar hosts zillion of trafficked children from every corner of the country. This is attributable to various and interdependent factors: economic, social, cultural, political, demographic and environmental factors. Induced by these factors, child trafficking results in serious psychosocial, medical, mental and other consequences on the victims and the community. Therefore, curving the problem and its resultant effects requires seeking solutions from economic, social, cultural, political, demographic and environmental perspective.

Alina Polyakova The Dark Side of European Integration. Social Foundations and Cultural Determinants of the Rise of Radical Right Movements in Contemporary Europe

Across Europe, radical right-wing parties are winning increasing electoral support. The Dark Side of European Integration argues that this rising nationalism and the mobilization of the radical right are the consequences of European economic integration. The European economic project has produced a cultural backlash in the form of nationalist radical right ideologies. This assessment relies on a detailed analysis of the electoral rise of radical right parties in Western and Eastern Europe. Contrary to popular belief, economic performance and immigration rates are not the only factors that determine the far right's success. There are other political and social factors that explain why in post-socialist Eastern European countries such parties had historically been weaker than their potential, which they have now started to fulfill increasingly. Using in-depth interviews with radical right activists in Ukraine, Alina Polyakova also explores how radical right mobilization works on the ground through social networks, allowing new insights into how social movements and political parties interact.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, University of Szczecin (Faculty of Economics and Management), language: English, abstract: The flow of investments in developing countries varies greatly across countries. In this research, due to the lack of capital markets in some of the Arab countries we have been focusing on foreign direct investment as one of types of foreign investment. Foreign investment comprises foreign direct investment (FDI), which inflows have provided the strong impetus on economic development across countries. FDI serves as an important source of supply of funds for domestic investments, promoting capital formation in the host country. Nowadays, more attention is paid to the issues of foreign direct investments at both national and international levels. According to World Investments reports, many developing countries, including the Arab countries, have attracted only small amounts of FDI inflows despite their efforts towards the economic openness. It means many factors impede the flow of foreign capital to Arab countries. The attractiveness of investment is a set of features and factors that allow the investor to evaluate the potential of any country to be more attractive for investment than the other one. Many factors include economic factors, social factors and political factors, which lead to increase in foreign direct investment. The potential investor considers these factors when c...

This piece of work aims at enriching the human rights literature in Cameroon by presenting these ramifications and some solutions to redress the awful situation. It could go a long way to help not only families and social affairs decision-makers in Cameroon, but also families and social affairs decision-makers all over the world, especially in Africa and developing countries. It specifically describes and analyses the socio-economic characteristics (of rural women and men), which influence REP in the region. It also analyses the institutional, ecological and cultural variables promoting employment generation; estimates/determines crucial factors, which might influence REP; and identifies viable avenues for rapid REP. Over all, five major factors were extracted in the process of variable reduction in the analysis of data. These are the socio-economic attributes of the respondent; institutional influence on his/her activities; the ecology of the respondent's immediate environment; his/her financial and knowledge acquisition; and the physical and social capitals at his/her disposal for appropriation in the process of establishing a cottage industry for production and or service purpose(s). These are some of the key policy issues, which require the attention of national governments and international donor agencies in their bid to drive employment generation.

The purpose to narrowly focus the developing countries here is to go deep into the details of the reasons based on political and technological factors which are not letting the developing countries to grow and progress in the modern world. The literature has already identified many factors that are hindering the economic growth of countries but very little research has been done on this topic specific to the context of developing countries so this research study would be more focused toward this area. Developing countries as the name indicates are the countries which are struggling to get developed and thus they have to pay more attention toward problems occurring due to political, technological and several different issues. Another important fact to mention here is that although previous studies have identified individual impacts of different factors like political, technological, social and cultural factors etc on the economy of individua...

Real prosperity requires a combination of economic development with social generosity and demands a new approach towards social and managerial engagement.Mergers and acquisitions are typically complex in nature and have to be seen from a wider perspective that takes into account not just business, but also social, human and cultural dimensions as well. The right strategic approach and regard for Corporate Social Responsibility are important preconditions for a successful merger. The fulfilment of these preconditions can create greater shareholder value and strengthen Corporate Social Responsibility. Acting as a responsible corporate citizen does pay off, and the "syndrome of selfishness" can be overcome - at least partly.

The People's Typography: A Social Semiotic analysis explores the relationship between a specific visual dialect generated in South African informal settlements ('township typography') and mainstream cultural production, specifically the field of South African print advertising. This study starts with the premise that 'township typography' is a complex visual dialect generated by various economic and historical factors within the South African landscape. These factors translate into the adoption of specific tools, application methods and set of skills when producing letterforms in the South African informal settlement - making 'township typography' a unique dialect, that can be distinguished from letterforms found within mainstream graphic design. Due to the social origin of this dialect, and it's distinct appearance 'township typography' has the capacity to evoke and appeal to specific social, cultural and demographic structures in South African society. The People's Typography: A Social Semiotic Analysis reveals a process by which these features are drawn into South African print advertising as the result of a complex process of incorporation and institutional consecration.

Capitalism and Modernity: The Great Debate

This important new book investigates how the West attained its current position of economic and social advantage. In an incisive historical analysis, Jack Goody examines when and why Europe (and Anglo-America) started to outstrip all other continents in socio-economic growth.Drawing on non-Western examples of economic and technical progress, Goody challenges assumptions about long-term European supremacy of a 'cultural' kind, as was a feature of many theories current in social science. He argues that the divergence came with the Industrial Revolution and that the earlier bourgeois revolution of the sixteenth century was but one among many Eurasia-wide expressions of developing mercantile and manufacturing activity. This original book casts new light on the history of capitalism, industrialization and modernity, and will be essential reading for all those interested in the great debate about the economic rise of the West.

Arta Ante State Building and Development. Two sides of the same coin. Exploring the case of Kosovo

This dissertation's hypothesis argues that state-building and development are processes that, to function successfully, must be positioned in a complementary interrelationship. This argument has arisen in response to contemporary approaches to state-building and development that are too narrow, so that state-building strategies are often reduced to the establishment of political institutions to the exclusion of other equally necessary structures that include economic, social, and even cultural concerns; in the same sense, development strategies frequently focus on the support and establishment of selected economic structures at the exclusion of political, cultural, and social dimensions. Furthermore, a necessary prerequisite for long-term stability is a guarantee of individual and collective security, and the state requires, in its establishment and development, this aspect in all of its institutions. By taking as a case study the intervention of UNMIK and the EU in Kosovo, the author attempts to show how state-building and development processes are interrelated, and how they might best be applied in the field in order to achieve sustainable outcomes.State-building is defined as the building of state structures, which are role- and rule-oriented institutions within political, economic, social and cultural domains. Development is used in this work to identify the process responsible for making these structures sustainable over time. In the case of Kosovo, in addition to th...

The political ideal of democracy along with a liberalization of national economies seems to have finally gained the recognition it deserves as the system that in the end allows for the best utilization of wealth creating endowments. Besides differences in economic development, cultural differences remain as a single important means of distinguishing between people from several nations. Michigan's foremost lumbertowns, flourishing urban industrial centers in the late 19th century, faced economic calamity with the depletion of timber supplies by the end of the century. Turning to their own resources and reflecting individual cultural identities, Saginaw, Bay City, and Muskegon developed dissimilar strategies to sustain their urban industrial status. This study is a comprehensive history of these lumbertowns from their inception as frontier settlements to their emergence as reshaped industrial centers.Primarily an examination of the role of the entrepreneur in urban economic development, Michigan Lumbertowns considers the extent to which the entrepreneurial approach was influenced by each city's cultural-ethnic construct and its social history. More than a narrative history, it is a study of violence, business, and social change.

The book proposes the new form be an eco-cultural community, a community defined both by its naturally occurring bio-system and by the economic and cultural identity of the people involved therein. And the book challenges all Americans to overthrow our republican form of government, by engaging in a Campaign for Human Dignity, supported technically as that campaign would be through the Human Dignity Project, which would ensure increasing enfranchisement and not segregation.

Gabriel Amir The Impact of Sustainability Strategies on Corporate Performance

Companies are developing strategies to realize value based upon the concept of sustainability. Businesses recognize that sustainability can create a strategic advantage, and can become instrumental to their long-term viability. The concept has dramatically expanded the scope of measuring organizational performance into the economic, social, and environmental components that are often referred to collectively as the "triple bottom line." Organizations are discovering that specific products and processes can have profound environmental and social implications besides normal economic benefits. Within this context, organizational decision-makers must contend with numerous stakeholder issues, pressure from environmental agencies, and increased social consciousness that affects workers, consumers, and communities. These factors must be balanced by a reasonable return on investment and long-term organizational success. The interaction between these conflicting pressures and barriers makes it difficult for organizations to adopt sustainability strategies.

Alexandru Ciherean, Francesco Perrini, Alfred Vernis Is there correlation between social and economic value.

The book at hand aims to investigate the correlation between the creation of social and economic value. The main theoretical perspectives considered are Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Social Value, Stakeholder Theory and Social Entrepreneurship. The research is based on a sample of ten companies in the oil industry over the period 2000-2009. It shows that in this sector there is definitely a positive correlation between the creation of economic and social value. This conclusion can be extended to sectors characterized by similar conditions and due to the evolution of the economic and social context, more and more sectors will have to face the same issue. Room for further research is left to demonstrate that other sectors characterized by social and environmental impacts face the same situation. The analysis should help shed some light on the importance of creating social value, and should be especially useful to business executives and policy makers interested in the correlation between the creation of social and economic value. All of Alexandru Ciherean's proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to Fundación Alda.

Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 1,0, ESCP Europe Business School - Campus London (Institut für Marketing), course: Konsumentenverhalten, language: English, abstract: PURPOSE:The various efforts of individuals to raise their status as recognised by others have previously been understood as measures independent from one another. This thesis critically questions this rigid perspective and points out reasons that would lead one to conclude interdependencies between the individual measures. The thesis points out that individuals use the interdependent measures in a strategic way depending on their economic (e.g. income, property) and social (e.g. education, upbringing) circumstances and combine them with one another according to certain criteria in order to raise their relative status advantage vis-à-vis others.FINDINGS:The results of the study show that individuals use various combinations of strategies to raise their status depending on their economic and social circumstances. The results were applied to the model of Pierre Bourdieu (1984) with a differentiation between economic and cultural capital. The differentiation between directly existing and externally signalled economic and cultural capital at times showed significant differences. The individuals, depending on the reference group, their existing status norms as well as their demographic circumstances...

Both factors are blended into the socio-economic developments of the country which are addressed in this paper. The focus here lies on the pre-colonial and colonial times. The names Burma and Myanmar are used equivalent and without political implications. To approximate an assessment of those two phases, it is necessary start with a short introduction to the crucial geographic and historical factors affecting the social-economic developments until 1948, the year of Myanmar's independence. The definition of the term socio-economic developments is allocated here as well. Subsequently a short overview on the most important periods of Myanmar's history is added. Gronow Jukka, Zhuravlev Sergey Fashion Meets Socialism

The Soviet Union was not renowned for its fashionable clothing. However, after the World War II the Soviet Government opened several parallel organizations of fashion design with fashion houses and ateliers all over the country. The post-war decades witnessed hot debates on destalinization, economic and social reforms and the increasing importance of the public opinion. The cold war and the peaceful competition between the two systems left their marks on clothes fashion. Fashion offers a good insight into Soviet economic planning. Despite increasing opulence, Soviet consumers were not satisfied. Soviet experts on fashion propagated small series of fashionable clothing and the opening of boutiques which never seriously challenged industrial mass production. Using a great variety of unique historical sources the book analyzes the changing economic, social and cultural conditions of Soviet fashion which faced many problems but had real achievements to show too.

Sylvia Van Kirk Many Tender Ties. Women in Fur-Trade Society, 1670-1870

Beginning with the founding of the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1670, the fur trade dominated the development of the Canadian west. Although detailed accounts of the fur-trade era have appeared, until recently the rich social history has been ignored. In this book, the fur trade is examined not simply as an economic activity but as a social and cultural complex that was to survive for nearly two centuries. The author traces the development of a mutual dependency between Indian and European traders at the economic level that evolved into a significant cultural exchange as well. Marriages of fur traders to Indian women created bonds that helped advance trade relations. As a result of these "many tender ties," there emerged a unique society derived from both Indian and European culture.

Kenyan society has developed a multiplicity of social representations of child streetism: the way they interrelate contributes to shaping this specific social phenomenon, direct actions, and envisage possible social change. The cultural dimension is poorly taken into account but it is still addressable by both the scientific community and the practitioners in order to change society's perception of street children. The present study thus focuses on the phenomenon of Kenyan street children in terms of relationships and culture, by exploring, through a qualitative research, whether the identity of the street child can be understood by referring to the subject as the product of social and cultural conditioning or as an entity potentially capable to develop its reflexive experience and actively produce new meanings and social forms. On the whole, this study has highlighted identity as a crucial issue in dealing with street children. It demands consideration so that they could finally be regarded and treated just as children.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Company formation, Business Plans, grade: 1,7, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Anglistik), language: English, abstract: This thesis examines the effect of cultural factors on entrepreneurship in different eco-systems including attitudes and the role of journalism. The object of this thesis is an exemplary examination of the question in a national context, whether and to what extent cultural dimensions influence individual's propensity to found a start-up. The entrepreneurial activities in Germany and the United States differ from each other which is also reasoned by different value systems and attitudes. Indications of rather an individualist or collectivist and rather a risk-averse or risk-affine attitude towards start-ups and its foundation will be focused upon. Building on Hofstede's research on cultural dimensions, newspaper and blog articles from the United States and Germany dealing with start-up foundations and the attitude of the respective society on start-ups including the founders' views will be analyzed. Since all cultural dimensions are intercorrelated, quantifying the effects of how much single cultural dimensions influence start-up foundations while excluding the influence of other dimensions is difficult. Therefore, the thesis does not examine the effects of the above mentioned two cultural dimensions isolated from other cultural factors, but it sets a focus on those two dimensi...

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Economics - Economic Cycle and Growth, grade: 1,0, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Faculty of Economics & Management), language: English, abstract: This thesis analyzes the two economies of South Tyrol and Luxembourg, questioning whether their economic growth can be explained by concepts of endogenous growth theories.South Tyrol and Luxembourg are two quite similar economies in terms of size, population, cultural diversity and scarcity of natural resources, but yet very different in matters of economic growth, income per capita and economic specialization, which makes them an interesting sample to test for growth factors. Since endogenous growth theories, in contrast to neoclassical conceptions, provide a much broader range of tools to handle endogenous technological change, innovation and other factors, they are better suited to analyze growth factors. Therefore, this thesis first draws a summary on the evolution of endogenous growth theories including an outline of the most important contributions. It is shown that the factor "human capital" plays a major role in most models. Subsequently, the second part of the thesis deals with the economies of South Tyrol and Luxembourg in detail, evaluates historical economic growth, identifies tourism and financial intermediation as their main driving forces and asks whether human capital could be the moving power behind them. The method of choice for measuring is the co...

They face social and economic constraints that perpetuate poverty and spans generations. However, significant opportunities exist in the informal, small-scale enterprise sector for which women should take advantage. Community groups are popular institutions in Kenya's rural areas. The groups help provide services that the government, has failed to deliver. Also the emergence of microfinance institutions to offer lending funds has been of great impact. This study sought to investigate the factors affecting women microfinance loan repayment. The findings of the study may be useful to policy makers in government, private sector, Non-Governmental and Faith Based Organisations.
