Eric Dalinpuo IS SOCIAL PROTECTION A RIGHT.

Social protection involves choices about whether the core principle behind social provisioning will be universal or selective through targeting. Extreme poverty is regarded as the world's greatest human rights issue. The UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights starts from the idea that all human beings are born free and equal in status and rights. Under the international human rights law, States are legally obligated to establish social protection systems for their citizens, especially the vulnerable and at risk. Social protection in Ghana assumes three main targets for poverty reduction; the first target looks at labour market interventions in terms of employment services, job training, and direct employment generation. The second target deals with social insurance that targets risk mitigation, disability, ill health, old age, health insurance, and the third target is social assistance that provides welfare and social services, cash or in-kind transfers, and subsidies. The interventions under these targets are either universal or targeted. This study is concerned with the right base of social protection for OVC and examines the impact and challenges of some social protection interventions. For this purpose, three categories of participants made up of 53 OVC, Caregivers, SP interventions and institutions as well as Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) were selected across the two townships of Wa and Jirapa for the study through systematic random sampling. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Western Europe, grade: 1,0, Vienna University of Economics and Business (Institut für Sozialpolitik), language: English, abstract: The financial crisis, which struck the EU countries in 2008, was followed by the severest economic recession since the end of the Second World War, involving a significant drop in GDP (negative economic growth) for most of them. Output growth has turned negative or stagnated in several countries, the impact on labour markets has led to rising unemployment rates and public debt and deficits have soared. In the aftermath of the crisis countries were confronted with a deteriorating social context, which is due to the severity of the economic downturn, the worsening job situation and the increased unemployment. This has resulted in a heightened need for social protection while at the same time making it more difficult to finance. The crisis has highlighted the role of social protection as a social buffer and an economic stabilizer that cushions the impact of recessions. Social benefits have been an essential element of national crisis response in the countries of the European Union. Social security programmes not only act as an important component of the crisis „exit strategy", helping to revitalize the economy but they also protect the most vulnerable part of society. One of the lessons that can be learned from the crisis is that countries and their inha...

Army Training Doctrine and Command, U.S. Department of the Army Protection. The official U.S. Army Field Manual FM 3-37 (September 2009)

Field Manual (FM) 3-37 provides doctrinal guidance for commanders and staffs who are responsible for planning and executing protection in support of full spectrum operations. It describes protection as both an element of combat power and as a warfighting function. FM 3-37 corresponds with Army operations doctrine introduced in the FM 3-0 capstone manual. As the Army keystone manual for protection, FM 3-37 will help commanders understand and visualize protection concepts and ideas and enable them to describe protection tasks and systems for integration into the operations process. FM 3-37 expands on the protection and combined arms terminology outlined in FM 3-0. It explains how protection can be achieved and applied through the combination and integration of reinforcement and complementary capabilities to preserve combat power or to protect personnel, physical assets, or information. This manual recognizes that protection has no direct antecedent from the former battlefield operating systems, so protection is realized in many ways. Therefore, the text introduces the five forms and five principles of protection to provide a context for battle command and a framework for task assignment: Forms of protection: Deterrence; Prevention; Active security; Passive defense; Mitigation. Principles of protection: Full-dimension; Integrated; Layered; Redundant; Enduring.

Demonstrates how a building's setting should inform and inspire rather than constrain architectural design Context-Architecture and the Genius of Place is a highly engaging, informative discussion of context in architectural theory and practice. Eric Parry, one of the UK's most highly regarded architects – whose work has been widely lauded for its innovative response to its setting – addresses the contemporary definition of context and its importance for sustainable everyday living and urban design. Looking beyond the formal agenda to explore the fundamentals that give new social and cultural perspective to this vital point of departure for designers, this book turns the urban statistician's telescopic focus on global trends inside out for a better understanding of the cultural and physical conditions that make archetypes like the Parisian Café, the London High Street, the Baltic City Square, and the Mumbai Market part of the architect's lexicon. From pavement to landscape, readers will examine how context must be taken into account at every stage in the design process. This book draws on the author's extensive experience within complex urban settings to show how the existing fabric and social conditions can provide an essential starting point for new design, offering a framework for thinking about design responses and their relationship to cultural origins of place. Discover the importance of orientation Develop a sequential understanding of urban space Hear the dialogue between parts within a whole Differentiate the uses of formal and informal Whereas existing urban settings, particularly historic city centers, are generally regarded as limiting to architectural creativity, this book presents context as grounds for inspiration rather than constraint. When used correctly, these techniques create the feeling that a new building has always been there, simply because it «fits». Context explains the methods behind brilliant architecture, helping designers create buildings that not only belong, but can provide a catalyst to urban life.

Alexandru Ciherean, Francesco Perrini, Alfred Vernis Is there correlation between social and economic value.

The book at hand aims to investigate the correlation between the creation of social and economic value. The main theoretical perspectives considered are Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Social Value, Stakeholder Theory and Social Entrepreneurship. The research is based on a sample of ten companies in the oil industry over the period 2000-2009. It shows that in this sector there is definitely a positive correlation between the creation of economic and social value. This conclusion can be extended to sectors characterized by similar conditions and due to the evolution of the economic and social context, more and more sectors will have to face the same issue. Room for further research is left to demonstrate that other sectors characterized by social and environmental impacts face the same situation. The analysis should help shed some light on the importance of creating social value, and should be especially useful to business executives and policy makers interested in the correlation between the creation of social and economic value. All of Alexandru Ciherean's proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to Fundación Alda.

Social Reconstruction. People, Politics, Perspectives (PB)

Social Reconstruction as a philosophy, stream of thought or "official program" ois often synonymous withDepression-era Progressivism. But, Social Reconstruction, unlike progressivism, enjoyed political stardom. The spirit of progressivism, atleast in terms of education, found a home in those enthusiasts who supported a child-centered perspective of education. Others, such as theessentialists viewed their progressive role as one that advanced the view of essential or basic education as the most sound approach tocurriculum and teaching. Still others, more radical in their outlook, believed that progress should be framed with questions about socialjustice and equity. Proponents of social reconstruction included Harold Rugg and George Counts, although the "movement" was rich withsupporters. To date, social reconstruction is only a by word in most texts that deal with the Progressive Era or progressive education, perhaps, because Rugg and Counts, the two most visible proponents, sought and received the political limelight, no matter how glaring. Inany event, the depths of social reconstruction have yet to be plumbed. Hence, the first book in this series will offer a comprehensivetreatment of Social Reconstruction, which include chapters that examine its proponents, political nature, and social justice programs born ofand within the tumultuous context of progressive politics.

Inspired by Heidegger's concept of the clearing of being, and by Wittgenstein's ideas on human practice, Theodore Schatzki offers a novel approach to understanding the constitution and transformation of social life. Key to the account he develops here is the context in which social life unfolds-the "site of the social"-as a contingent and constantly metamorphosing mesh of practices and material orders. Schatzki's analysis reveals the advantages of this site ontology over the traditional individualist, wholistic, and structuralist accounts that have dominated social theory since the mid-nineteenth century. A special feature of the book is its development of the theoretical argument by sustained reference to two historical examples: the medicinal herb business of a Shaker village in the 1850s and contemporary day trading on the Nasdaq market. First focusing on the relative simplicity of Shaker life to illuminate basic ontological characteristics of the social site, Schatzki then uses the sharp contrast with the complex and dynamic practice of day trading to reveal what makes this approach useful as a general account of social existence. Along the way he provides new insights into many major issues in social theory, including the nature of social order, the significance of agency, the distinction between society and nature, the forms of social change, and how the social present affects its future.

Gabriel Amir The Impact of Sustainability Strategies on Corporate Performance

Companies are developing strategies to realize value based upon the concept of sustainability. Businesses recognize that sustainability can create a strategic advantage, and can become instrumental to their long-term viability. The concept has dramatically expanded the scope of measuring organizational performance into the economic, social, and environmental components that are often referred to collectively as the "triple bottom line." Organizations are discovering that specific products and processes can have profound environmental and social implications besides normal economic benefits. Within this context, organizational decision-makers must contend with numerous stakeholder issues, pressure from environmental agencies, and increased social consciousness that affects workers, consumers, and communities. These factors must be balanced by a reasonable return on investment and long-term organizational success. The interaction between these conflicting pressures and barriers makes it difficult for organizations to adopt sustainability strategies.

Armstrong, Brock University;Ira Bogotch, Florida Atlantic University; Sandra Harris, Lamar University;Whitney H. Sherman, Virginia Commonwealth University; George Theoharis, Syracuse UniversityThe purpose of this book is to examine and learn lessons from the way leadership for social justice isconceptualized in several disciplines and to consider how these lessons might improve the preparation andpractice of school leaders. In particular, we examine philosophy, anthropology, sociology, economics, political science, public policy, and psychology. Our contention is that the field of educational leadershipmight consider taking a step backward in order to take several forward. That is, educational leadershipresearchers might re-examine social justice, both in terms of social and individual dynamics and as disciplinary-specific, multidisciplinary andinterdisciplinary phenomenon. By adopting this approach, we can connect and extend long-established lines of conceptual and empirical inquiry andthereby gain insights that may otherwise be overlooked or assumed. This holds great promise for generating, refining, and testing theories of socialjustice in educational leadership and will help strengthen already vibrant lines of inquiry. That is, rather than citing a single, or a few, works out of theirdisciplinary context it might be more fruitful to situate educational leade...

Contemporary Perspectives on Social Learning in Early Childhood Education (PB)

Social epistemology is a broad set of approaches to the study of knowledge and to gain information about the social dimensions. This intellectual movement of wide cross-disciplinary sources reconstructs the problems of epistemology when knowledge is considered to be intrinsically social. In the first chapter, "Social Epistemology and Social Learning," Olivia Saracho and Bernard Spodek discuss the social and historical contexts in which different forms of knowledge are formulated based on the perspective of social epistemology. They also discuss the emergence of social epistemology, which guides researchers to investigate social phenomena in laboratory and field settings. Social factors "external" to the appropriate business of science have a major impact in the social studies researchers'= historical case studies. Thus, social studies researchers may be considered social epistemologists, because (a) they focus on knowledge of social influences and (b) they infer epistemologically significant conclusions from their sociological or anthropological research. In addition, analyses indicate that studies of scientific paradigms are basically a struggle for political power rather than reflecting reliable epistemic merit. Social studies researchers focus on knowledge of social influences on knowledge, which is analogous to the knowledge of the social epistemologists. They also use their sociological or anthropological research to infer epistemologically significan...
