Until now, lateral two-dimensional methods are used to assess three-dimensional changes that occur in the facial soft tissue of orthodontic patients. In this study a method for three- dimensional morphometric assessment of facial soft tissue changes following orthodontic treatment was introduced. Forty patients who underwent orthodontic treatment that resulted in lateral profile changes in the facial soft tissue were included in the study. Twenty patients underwent orthodontic treatment that resulted in facial soft tissue profile retraction and twenty patients underwent orthodontic treatment that resulted in soft tissue profile advancement. Two dimensional comparisons between pre-treatment and post- treatment lateral radiographs were carried out . Then, computerized pre-treatment and post-treatment three-dimensional head models were constructed for each patient utilizing frontal and lateral photographs. Computer graphic facial analysis was carried out to measure the three-dimensional volumetric deformation in each head model after orthodontic treatment in order to determine the changes that occur in the facial soft tissue of patients following orthodontic treatment.

Although the oral cavity is not a common site for metastatic colonization, it is an interesting site because of the various and different tissues that may be involved in the metastatic process. This study examines the practices around organ and tissue donation over 5 years in a department of critical care medicine. The practices were developed on expectations around quality end-of-life care for patients in the intensive care unit. The results of this study demonstrate that a process whereby organ and tissue donation is viewed as a measure of quality end-of-life care, and a process that is inherent to critical care, is efficient and could be adopted by other critical care groups. Further, if an efficient process exists, the ethical propriety of increasing organ supply using alternative sources can be examined.

The effects of recording electrode size and location on electrograms are presented. Action potential propagation as a result of atrial fibrillation ablation therapy is also modeled by defining a lesion area with decreased electrical conductivity. The effect of electrical conductivity and geometry of the lesion was also studied. It is shown that the success rate of atrial fibrillation ablation therapy is primarily correlated with the creation of continuous ablation lines and also the formation of fibrous tissue.

This book includes a review of the pathophysiology of acute colitis in the adult horse and discussion of the more common etiologies for this condition and treatment options available to the equine clinician. The aim of the clinical study performed and documented was to evaluate the use of a hyperimmunized plasma containing high concentration of antibodies against Clostridium difficile, Clostridium perfringens and Salmonella sp in a referral population of equine colitis cases.Forty two horses were enrolled and 38 horses completed the study. At study admission clinical and clinicopathological parameters, other than fecal frequency score were comparable between the groups. Fecal frequency score was significantly differentbetween the treatment groups (p=0.003). The mean duration of diarrhea was 40.7±9.8 hours (mean ±SEM), 119.2±56.1 hours and 72.0±24.5 hours for the hyperimmunized plasma, normal plasma and control groups respectively. This data confirms thehyperimmunized plasma used in this study decreased the time to resolution of diarrhea.

Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Medizin - Gynäkologie, Andrologie, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Reports of receptors for 1,25 (OH)2 D3 in most of the tissues of the body suggest that vitamin D may have a more fundamental and generalized role rather than merely in calcium homeostasis. Many clinical studies, including a few by the author, have indicated a beneficial effect of vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy on the fetal and neonatal growth. This experimental study was conducted to elucidate the effects of vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy on the skeletal and soft tissue growth in the rat pups. Results of this study have demonstrated that in the rat on normal intake of vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus, administration of a limited supplement of vitamin D during pregnancy produced a beneficial effect on the fetal and neonatal growth. The increase in growth involved both skeletal and soft tissues. The accelerated growth was partly due to an improvement in lactational performance of the mother. In addition, certain evidences suggest an anabolic action of vitamin D on the offspring which begins during gestation and extends into neonatal period.

Ischemic heart disease leads to the malfunctioning of the affected tissue. Stem cell transplantation near the ischemic tissue is a possible therapeutic approach to regenerate the fibrotic tissue. The ischemic or fibrotic tissue is not able to supply the nutrients and oxygen to the transplanted cells. Therefore, the transplanted cells start to die within hours after transplantation. The ischemic and apoptotic hostile microenvironment also contributes to slow down the healing process. Strategies to enhance endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) survival after transplantation in the ischemic tissues so far have achieved little success. Oxytocin a nano-peptide hormone and mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channel opener is known to suppress cell apoptosis and promote cell survival. . In this study, the effect of oxytocin preconditioning on EPCs under hypoxic injury was studied. oxytocin preconditioning is effective to improve the survival of EPCs under oxidative stress conditions by the activation of cyto-protective genes involved in different pathways.

A theoretical model for oxygen and substrate transport to tissues within skeletal muscle involving several interacting capillaries has been developed. It involves an elegant technique that discretizes the transport problem in a tissue with large number of capillaries. The technique can be equally applied to other heat transport problems with actual anatomical information. For oxygen, the role of myoglobin and the effect of axial diffusion have been considered. For the myoglobin model, myoglobin facilitates oxygen diffusion into tissue and can prevent hypoxia due to the interaction of the capillaries. The analysis yields a great deal of information about hypoxia, since as shown, a multicapillary model of the type presented here is needed to determine if the tissue is truly hypoxic. Because capillary length is large compared to capillary spacing, axial diffusion is a small perturbation to the solution without axial diffusion. The effect of axial diffusion is found using perturbation methods. For the substrate model, there can be large differences between the substrate concentration in the capillary and that in the tissue, depending on the permeability of the capillary endothelium.
