Chromium exists in nature as complexes of two stable oxidation states – trivalent chromium(III) and hexavalent chromium(VI). Although trivalent chromium is required in trace amounts for sugar and lipid metabolism in humans and its deficiency may cause a disease called chromium deficiency; hexavalent chromium is toxic and carcinogenic. As chromium compounds were used in dyes and paints and the tanning of leather, these compounds are often found in soil and groundwater at abandoned industrial sites, now needing environmental cleanup and remediation. The Bioinorganic Chemistry of Chromium: From Biochemistry to Environmental Toxicology takes a critical look at what the biochemical data indicate about chromium's role in the body and the biological mechanisms of its toxicology. Topics covered include: What do we know about the biochemical roles and mechanisms of chromium? Is chromium an essential element in the mammalian diet? Is chromium(III) effective as a nutraceutical, a therapeutic agent, and as a supplement in animal feed? What is the biochemistry behind the toxicology of chromium(III) and chromium(VI):the mechanisms of metabolism, genetic and epigenetic effects, and disruption of cell signalling? What are the current chromium(VI) policies and positions from regulatory agencies? The Bioinorganic Chemistry of Chromium: From Biochemistry to Environmental Toxicology is an important contribution to the bioinorganic and trace element biochemical fields which will find a place on the bookshelves of bioinorganic chemists, biochemists, inorganic chemists, toxicologists, nutritionists and regulatory affairs professionals.

It is well established that preemergence herbicide activity is influenced by soil type, and recommended rates for most soil-applied herbicides are adjusted to soil type. Current technology allows application rates to be adjusted on the go (VRA), adjusting the rate as soil type changes in a field. Most applicators offering this service base herbicide rates on soil organic matter content. However, several other factors influence herbicide activity, most importantly weed density and environment. This research is to determine which of these factors is most important in determining the optimum herbicide rate, and the economic benefit of VRA to the grower. The objective of this study is to determine the relative contribution of soil type, weed density and environmental factors on herbicide effectiveness.

Forest soils are the foundation of the entire forest ecosystem and complex, long-term interactions between trees, soil animals, and the microbial community shape soils in was that are very distinct from agricultural soils. The composition, structure, and processes in forest soils at any given time reflect current conditions, as well as the legacies of decades (and even millennia) of interactions that shape each forest soil. Reciprocal interactions are fundamental; vegetation alters soil physical properties, which influence soil biology and chemistry, which in turn influence the growth and success of plants. These dynamic systems may be strongly influenced by intentional and unintentional management, ranging from fire to fertilization. Sustaining the long-term fertility of forest soils depends on insights about a diverse array of soil features and changes over space and time. Since the third edition of this successful book many new interests in forest soils and their management have arisen, including the role of forest soils in sequestering carbon, and how management influences rates of carbon accumulation. This edition also expands the consideration of how soils are sampled and characterized, and how tree species differ in their influence on soil development. Clearly structured throughout, the book opens with the origins of forest soil science and ends with the application of soil science principles to land management. This new edition provides: A completely revised and updated Fourth Edition of this classic textbook in the field A coherent overview of the major issues surrounding the ecology and management of forest soils Global in scope with coverage of soil types ranging from the tropical rainforest soils of Latin America to the boreal forest soils of Siberia New chapters on Management: Carbon sequestration; Evidence-based approaches and applications of geostatistics, GIS and taxonomies A clear overview of each topic, informative examples/case studies, and an overall context for helping readers think clearly about forest soils An introduction to the literature of forest soil science and to the philosophy of forest soil science research This coherent overview of the major issues surrounding the ecology and management of forest soils will be particularly useful to students taking courses in soil science, forestry, agronomy, ecology, natural resource management, environmental management and conservation, as well as professionals in forestry dealing with the productivity of forests and functioning of watersheds.

The spatial variation of soil nutrients such as soil P is becoming important because of the use of STP as a basis for policies such as the EU-introduced Nitrate Directive. Traditionally, fertilizers have been applied to grasslands based on soil test results, without considering within-field spatial variability. Such agricultural management may be inefficient due to under-application or over-application in specific sites. Under-application zones do not reach optimal levels of grass yield whereas in over-application areas there will be an increase of costs and high risk of environmental pollution such as runoff with high P or nitrogen (N) concentrations which can cause water eutrophication. This book, therefore, provides a combined spatial analysis method (geostatistics, GIS and Moran's I) to reveal spatial pattern and to produce spatial distribution maps of soil nutrients at field- and farm- scales in temporate grasslands. Such information can provide useful information for agronomic and environmental management. Furthermore, the method should be useful for studying spatial variation of environmental variables.

When waste is deposited at dumpsites it is usually forgotten yet it continues to interact with environmental factors to become even more dangerous to both people and the environment through soil, water and air pollution. This may cause ecological damage resulting in the ecosystem failing to sustain both animal and plant life. People may also contract diseases from polluted environmental media through contaminated food, air or water. In this study the aim was to evaluate the role of environmental factors in the distribution of pollutants around Gweru dumpsite. The study compared the concentration levels of lead (Pb), cadmium (cd) and sulphides (SO2) around the dumpsite with the natural concentration levels of the same chemicals in the surrounding areas. It also determined whether there is a significant (p>0.05) relationship between the concentration levels of pb, cd and sulphides and environmental factors specifically slope, soil bulk density, flow direction, soil infiltration rate and distance around the dumpsite. Results of the study established that there is a significant (p>0.05) difference between the concentration levels of each of the chemicals within and around the dumpsite.

One third of the world's soils have already been degraded. The burden on the land continues to grow under the combined pressures of demography, urbanization, artificialization and mining, and there are increased demands on agricultural land: changing dietary preferences, land speculation, as well as new demands for agroenergy, fiber, green chemistry, and more. Resulting issues such as soil crusting, water and wind erosion, soil salinization and soil acidity therefore constitute a major threat. The authors of this book present the main processes and factors of soil degradation, different ways to prevent it and methods of rehabilitation. The book also deals with the origin and processes of metallic and organic soil pollution as well as methods of phytoremediation and restoration. It is one of the few books to explore the issue of soil artificialization and urban soil management and to highlight how agricultural and urban waste can be used to amend and fertilize cultivated soils.

Environmental degradation has been recognized as high impact physical and social problem that could lead to worldwide environmental catastrophe. Evaluation of environmental degradation and natural resource depletion is therefore essential for the long-term management of natural resources and the nourishment of livelihoods that are dependent on them. The general focus of this book is to provide scientific based information and understanding about the interaction between Land use and Cover Change (LUCC), soil erosion, and sediment yield. Thereby, to propose options or scenarios for sustainable use of land and water resources. To this end, the Central Rift Valley of Ethiopia (CRV), which is located in the southern part of the country and has faced a serious land use and cover change and erosion damage, was taken as a model. This scientific result could generally be used as a tool in the environment rehabilitation program, given that, if they can be properly implemented they can significantly reduce the existing soil loss amount from the region and could create sustainable ecosystem in the future.

Soil can be defined as the space time continuum forming the upper part of the earth's crust. It is a natural body comprised of solid, liquid and gases that occur on the land surface. Joffe (1949) defined soil as a natural body differentiated into horizons of mineral and organic constituents usually unconsolidated of variable depth, which differs from the parent material below in morphology, physical properties and constitution, chemical properties and composition, and biological characteristics. Soil is one of the most fundamental resources for sustainability and survival. It is one of the most important assets to protect and pass on to future generations.Soil contamination due to anthropogenic and natural sources is increasing day by day because of increasing population, industrialization, and urbanization. Soil is the receptor of many contaminants from various sources. Contamination decreases the quality of the soil and adversely affects soil organisms. For this study, soil samples from thirteen locations contaminated from agricultural, industrial, and organic sources spread over the districts of Alappuzha and Kottayam in Kerala in the south west coast area of India were analyzed to study the changes in soil characteristics and its influence on soil microbial communities and their activities.

The stabilisation of contaminated soil by CKD improved the soil characteristics to some extent. The value of cohesion can be increased nearly linear by addition of CKD. Swelling is reduced by increasing amount of CKD which leads to the conclusion that the swelling behavior of the soil can be effectively controlled by the addition of CKD. From this study, the CKD may be effectively utilized in improvement of hydrocarbon contaminated soil. The stabilisation of contaminated soil by fly ash improved the soil characteristics to some extent. From the overall observations of the study that, the stabilisation of diesel engine oil contaminated soil using fly ash has been observed to be effective.

Soil Properties and their Correlations, Second Edition Michael Carter, Geotechnical Consultant (Retired), UK Stephen P Bentley, Reader in Engineering Geology, Cardiff University, UK An essential guide to improving preliminary geotechnical analysis and design from limited data Soil Properties and their Correlations, Second Edition provides a summary of commonly-used soil engineering properties and gives a wide range of correlations between the various properties, presented in the context of how they will be used in geotechnical design. The book is divided into 11 chapters: Commonly-measured properties; Grading and plasticity; Density; Permeability, Consolidation and settlement; Shear strength; California bearing ratio; Shrinkage and swelling characteristics; Frost susceptibility; Susceptibility to combustion; and Soil-structure interfaces. In addition, there are two appendices: Soil classification systems; and Sampling methods. This new, more comprehensive, edition provides material that would be of practical assistance to those faced with the problem of having to estimate soil behaviour from little or no laboratory test data. Key features: • Soil properties explained in practical terms. • A large number of correlations between different soil properties. • A valuable aid for assessing design values of properties. • Clear statements on practical limitations and accuracy. An invaluable source of reference for experienced professionals working on geotechnical design, it will also give students and early-career engineers an in-depth appreciation of the appropriate use of each property and the pitfalls to avoid.
