Land degradation and soil erosion are significant environmental problems affecting agricultural productivity and livelihood in Malawi. A number of soil fertility improvement technologies are being promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture and non governmental organization, in order to improve agricultural productivity and food security. In spite of the growing awareness of low cost soil fertility technologies, the rate of adoption and continued use of the technologies remain limited. The thesis examines farmer's perception of the current level of soil fertility and factors effecting farmers use of different soil fertility improvement technologies, using example of farmers from Machinga and Zomba Districts, in Malawi. The results provide insights for designing appropriate strategies, policies and programmes aimed at promoting adoption of soil fertility improvement technologies.

Soil contamination included oil, chemical, heavy metals and organic contaminant. High concentration of chemicals and toxic metals made the soil incapable for any intended engineering works. studies have been performed on contaminated soil and for their stabilization.In this work attempt has been made to study the effect of diesel oil on properties of local soil and then their stabilization with Fly Ash (FA) and Cement Kiln Dust (CKD). The stabilisation of contaminated soil by CKD improved the soil characteristics to some extent. The value of cohesion can be increased nearly linear by addition of CKD. Swelling is reduced by increasing amount of CKD which leads to the conclusion that the swelling behavior of the soil can be effectively controlled by the addition of CKD. From this study, the CKD may be effectively utilized in improvement of hydrocarbon contaminated soil. The stabilisation of contaminated soil by fly ash improved the soil characteristics to some extent. From the overall observations of the study that, the stabilisation of diesel engine oil contaminated soil using fly ash has been observed to be effective.

Many hill slope areas are vulnerable to soil erosion and shallow slope failures due to intense and frequent rainfall of tropical climate.In this study, Laboratory tests were performed on natural soil and soil mixed with deferent percentage of lime to improve soil properties and resistance against slope failure.When lime mixed with in-situ soil, it reduces swelling potential and shrinkage hence inhibit formation of cracks and also reduce soil's dispersibility therefore, reduce erosion possibility. Soil mixed with lime has lower permeability thus, it enhances capillary barrier effects and limits rainfall infiltration into the soil.Results show that optimum lime content to be used in the mix design is 7% by dry unit weight of soil. A two dimensional finite element model of slope was used to evaluate performance of the optimum lime-soil mixed as capillary barrier. The analysis revealed that the optimum thickness of slope cover system in capillary barrier is 30cm. Finding of this study, would contribute to a practical method of slope stabilisation and to display optimum slope cover thickness in capillary barrier effects.

Soil salinization and sodification are the major factors that contribute to land degradation and decrease in crop yield. The total global area of salt-affected soils including saline and sodic soils was 831 million hectares extending over all the continents. These soils can be made to yield a good crop through proper management practices. There are different approaches for reclamation of salt affected soils. The Prominent ones are physical, chemical, biological and agronomic. Integration of chemical and organic amendments have been tested and proved better in sodic/saline-sodic soil reclamation and soil physical property improvement. Results from this study it can be concluded that the application of organic and inorganic amendments decreased sodicity to a significant level and improved the physical and chemical properties of the soil, especially when used in combination compared to the control. Based on these results, partially burnt paddy husk and gypsum combination at the rate of 1% by the weight of soil and 100% gypsum requirement could be recommended respectively as appropriate amendment to mitigate salinity/sodicity in soil

The author as specialist in soil science integrated his experience in Economics and Statistical Analyses gained during two years in a FAO project in Syria, one year for a diploma in Agro-Food marketing and two year for MAS in Agricultural Economic to modify the ARIMA model by using intervention analysis and outlier detection to be applied for an interval irrigation that is variable. This enabled to predict precisely the next irrigation time with the ARIMA model which is crucial to enhance the effectiveness of the furrow irrigation practice. Also, he predicted the soil salinity by using ARIMA model. Further on, soil moisture and temperature measurements with the ECH2O 5TE sensors at the soil surface were used in transfer function to estimate the soil salinity at greater depth. By using a time-varying Dynamic Linear Model(DLM), Kalman Filter and smoothing techniques, the author revealed in an advanced procedure to investigate the relationship between soil dielectric constant (measured by ECH2O 5TE sensor) and soil bulk electrical conductivity under field conditions. Moreover, the author used volume balance model for assessing field irrigation performance in furrow irrigation.

Such agricultural management may be inefficient due to under-application or over-application in specific sites. Under-application zones do not reach optimal levels of grass yield whereas in over-application areas there will be an increase of costs and high risk of environmental pollution such as runoff with high P or nitrogen (N) concentrations which can cause water eutrophication. This book,therefore, provides a combined spatial analysis method (geostatistics, GIS and Moran's I) to reveal spatial pattern and to produce spatial distribution maps of soil nutrients at field- and farm- scales in temporate grasslands. Daily method of fertigation significantly increased the chlorophyll content at fruit set stage, average fruit weight, fruit yield per plant, fruit yield, POC, SOC, POC : SOC ratio in soil, available nutrients in soil, nutrients content in fruit, fertilizer use efficiency, net return and B : C ratio over conventional method of fertilizer application. Combination effect of methods of fertilizer application and doses of NPK fertilizers resulted in significantly higher average fruit weight, fruit yield per plant, fruit yield, available N and P in soil and N content in plant. Combined effect of organic manures and doses of NPK fertilizers significantly enhanced fruit yield of tomato. Combined effect of organic manures and methods of fertilizer application significantly increased fruit yield of tomato and available nitrogen in soil.

Often differences in land uses (forest, rubber plantation, paddy field, bare land) are known to have specific effects on soil properties. In the context of the project Living Landscapes China (LILAC) these effects were evaluated and the characteristics of soil types under changing conditions in two transects (altitude and parent material in transect 1, land uses in transect 2) in the Naban River Watershed National Nature Reserve were classified. We used field investigations to classify the soil types, as well as laboratory analyses to quantify specific characteristics in samples, taken from the profiles. Soil physical (bulk density, water content, texture) and chemical parameters (total contents of carbon, nitrogen and macro nutrients, ECEC) were investigated. While differences in altitude did not seem to have profound influences on the soils, effects of land uses were pronounced especially in the first 10 to 20 cm of soil profiles. Soils under forests contain between 1.3 % - 2 % SOC and 0.15 % - 0.17 % TN in the Ah horizon. The invaded sections of the valley bottoms and lower hill slopes are characterised by an almost complete monoculture of Acacia mearnsii, with very few fynbos species still present. The work looks at the influence of the invasion on soil properties, vegetation structure and soil erosion. It further explore how these changes change over time since clearing.

Maize is the main staple crop in East African mountains but its yield is affected by biotic and abiotic factors. Lepidopteran pests such as, Chilo partellus (Crambidae) and Busseola fusca (Noctuidae) reduced maize yield while soil elements increase the yield. In addition to enhancing maize yields, some soil element such as silicon (Si) aid plants in overcoming abiotic and biotic stresses. Hence, any factor that induces Si deficiency in soil might be detrimental to the plant growth and its resistance to insect pests and diseases. Understanding how the projected temperature increase will affect Si levels in soil and maize is crucial in promoting maize production in different agro-ecosystems in the face of climate change. This study evaluated the Si levels in both soil and maize plants cultivated along three altitudinal gradients of East African mountains (Machakos, Taita and Kilimanjaro) characterized by graded changes in climatic conditions. The study also linked the Si level in maize plants to lepidopteran pests' distribution.

This work investigates the impacts of the effluents and other wastes of a Textile Mill on quality of soil and water in the surrounding areas. Some specific impacts on soil and water quality have been identified. For example, the soil was getting enriched with both ionic matter and hydrophobic organic matter, which had important consequences. The soil became enriched with the trace metals, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. The quality of the drinking water in and around the textile mill did reflect the changes in the physico-chemical quality of the soil. The water was characterized by considerable presence of the cations, Ca, Mg, Na and K, being compensated by comparative presence of the anions, Cl, NO3 and SO4. The toxic organic contaminant, phenol, was present in some of the drinking water sources. The water was contaminated with Mn, Ni, and Pb, and also fluoride. The rice crop grown in the study area had accumulated appreciable amounts of metals in them as seen from the analysis of rice grains and husks. Significantly, the husks were seen to be richer in the metals than the grains with one or two exceptions.

The Ethiopian economy is predominantly agrarian, where almost half of the GDP is contributed by agricultural sector. However, the performance of the sector is very weak and suffers from various setbacks. Technological backwardness, environmental degradation, population increase and related pressure. The Amhara Regional State is one which highly affected by land degradation through soil erosion. To reverse the severity of the problem, soil and water conservation practices were introduced in different parts of the region including the study area. However, the attempt has been limited. Various factors, such as, households, socio-economic, physical and institutional factors, are attributed for the limited soil and water conservation practices of the past decades. The result of binary logit also showed that, total farm size, household labor availability, training on soil and water conservation practices and farm slopes were the major factors that affect the adoption of improved soil and water conservation practices positively, while farm distance of the households from the residence is negatively significant with plots far to the residences.

Natural resource degradation in the highlands of Ethiopia is caused by many factors among which soil erosion is the major one threatening the overall development of the country. Previous Strategies and technologies to conserve the natural resource often failed and neglected the participation and needs of the land users. Therefore, the major objective of this study was assessing different soil and water conservation practices, farmers’ perception of erosion hazards, and their constraints to participate the continued use of soil and water conservation with the aim of proposing measures that address problems related to natural resource degradation. The study was conducted in Debark woreda of the Simen Mountain National park boundaries. A total of 100 household heads were selected from five kebeles by using simple random sampling method. Focus group discussion, key-informant interview and field observation were conducted to generate data. Descriptive and inferential statistics such as mean, standard deviation, percentage, frequency distribution and correlation were used for analysis.
