In this work some modifications of the iterative methods and new methods presented for solving non-linear equations. The order of convergence and corresponding error equations of our methods is derived analytically and with the help of Maple program. We noted that the convergence analysis of our methods have order of convergence three, four, five, six, seven and ten. The efficiency of the method is tested on several numerical examples. It is observed that our methods is comparable with the well-known existing methods and in many cases gives better results. Also, our methods are competing with the other iterative methods of simple roots for solving non-linear equations.

A comprehensive approach to numerical partial differential equations Spline Collocation Methods for Partial Differential Equations combines the collocation analysis of partial differential equations (PDEs) with the method of lines (MOL) in order to simplify the solution process. Using a series of example applications, the author delineates the main features of the approach in detail, including an established mathematical framework. The book also clearly demonstrates that spline collocation can offer a comprehensive method for numerical integration of PDEs when it is used with the MOL in which spatial (boundary value) derivatives are approximated with splines, including the boundary conditions. R, an open-source scientific programming system, is used throughout for programming the PDEs and numerical algorithms, and each section of code is clearly explained. As a result, readers gain a complete picture of the model and its computer implementation without having to fill in the details of the numerical analysis, algorithms, or programming. The presentation is not heavily mathematical, and in place of theorems and proofs, detailed example applications are provided. Appropriate for scientists, engineers, and applied mathematicians, Spline Collocation Methods for Partial Differential Equations: Introduces numerical methods by first presenting basic examples followed by more complicated applications Employs R to illustrate accurate and efficient solutions of the PDE models Presents spline collocation as a comprehensive approach to the numerical integration of PDEs and an effective alternative to other, well established methods Discusses how to reproduce and extend the presented numerical solutions Identifies the use of selected algorithms, such as the solution of nonlinear equations and banded or sparse matrix processing Features a companion website that provides the related R routines Spline Collocation Methods for Partial Differential Equations is a valuable reference and/or self-study guide for academics, researchers, and practitioners in applied mathematics and engineering, as well as for advanced undergraduates and graduate-level students.

Non-linear equations make up most of the world around us and describe the different phenomena of our daily lives, such as the weather, listening to music and economics. Solving non-linear algebraic systems is thus one of the most popular questions in both the realm of mathematics and computation. Various methods for solving non-linear equation sets exist, most of which rely on approximations. This book focuses on finding and solving a tractable subset of the problem to be directly solved. Systems of bivariate binomial equations were chosen and solved through simulating the human method for solving said subset, using the constraint-based, declarative logic programming language Constraint Handling Rules. The solution method, tries to reduce one of the system equations into a solvable univariate one and then uses the solution of this equation to reduce the remaining equations in a similar manner.

The main aim of the book is to present new constructive methods of delay differential equation (DDE) theory and to give readers practical tools for analysis, control design and simulating of linear systems with delays. Referred to as “systems with delays” in this volume, this class of differential equations is also called delay differential equations (DDE), time-delay systems, hereditary systems, and functional differential equations. Delay differential equations are widely used for describing and modeling various processes and systems in different applied problems At present there are effective control and numerical methods and corresponding software for analysis and simulating different classes of ordinary differential equations (ODE) and partial differential equations (PDE). There are many applications for these types of equations, because of this progress, but there are not as many methodologies in systems with delays that are easily applicable for the engineer or applied mathematician. there are no methods of finding solutions in explicit forms, and there is an absence of generally available general-purpose software packages for simulating such systems. Systems with Delays fills this void and provides easily applicable methods for engineers, mathematicians, and scientists to work with delay differential equations in their operations and research.

Portfolio optimization is a widely studied problem in finance dating back to the work of Merton from the 1960s. While many approaches rely on dynamic programming, some recent contributions usemartingale techniques to determine the optimal portfolio allocation.Using the latter approach, we follow a journal article from 2003 and show how optimal portfolio weights can be represented in terms of conditional expectations of the state variables and their Malliavin derivatives. In contrast to other approaches, where Monte Carlo methods are used to compute the weights, here the simulation is carried out using Quasi-Monte Carlo methods in order to improve the efficiency. Despite some previous work on Quasi-Monte Carlo simulation of stochastic differential equations, we find them to dominate plain Monte Carlo methods. However, the theoretical optimal order of convergence is not achieved. With the help of some recent results concerning Monte-Carlo error estimation and backed by some computer experiments on a simple model with explicit solution, we provide a first guess, what could be a way around this difficulties. The book is organized as follows. In the first chapter we provide some general introduction to Quasi-Monte Carlo methods and show at hand of a simple example how these methods can be used to accelerate the plain Monte Carlo sampling approach. In the second part we provide a thourough introduction to Malliavin Calculus and derive some important calculation rules that will be nece...

The main objective to the study of theory of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) is to insure or find out properties of solutions of PDE that are not directly attainable by direct analytical means. Certain function spaces have certain known properties for which solutions of PDEs can be classified. As a result, this work critically looked into some function spaces and their properties. We consider extensively, Lp-spaces, distribution theory and sobolev spaces. The emphasis is made on sobolev spaces, which permit a modern approach to the study of differential equations. Looking at the linear elliptic partial differential equations considered in this work, we see that the key is Lax-Milgram theorem and the full understanding of Sobolev spaces and its properties. We are able to remove the rigor associated with second order partial differential equations and present it in the form that we can easily handle through the function spaces discussed. The book is based on variational formulation of some Boundary Value Problems (PDEs) using some known theorem (Lax-Milgram Theorem) to ascertain the existence and uniqueness of weak solution to such linear Elliptic PDEs.

Algebraic Identification and Estimation Methods in Feedback Control Systems presents a model-based algebraic approach to online parameter and state estimation in uncertain dynamic feedback control systems. This approach evades the mathematical intricacies of the traditional stochastic approach, proposing a direct model-based scheme with several easy-to-implement computational advantages. The approach can be used with continuous and discrete, linear and nonlinear, mono-variable and multi-variable systems. The estimators based on this approach are not of asymptotic nature, and do not require any statistical knowledge of the corrupting noises to achieve good performance in a noisy environment. These estimators are fast, robust to structured perturbations, and easy to combine with classical or sophisticated control laws. This book uses module theory, differential algebra, and operational calculus in an easy-to-understand manner and also details how to apply these in the context of feedback control systems. A wide variety of examples, including mechanical systems, power converters, electric motors, and chaotic systems, are also included to illustrate the algebraic methodology. Key features: Presents a radically new approach to online parameter and state estimation. Enables the reader to master the use and understand the consequences of the highly theoretical differential algebraic viewpoint in control systems theory. Includes examples in a variety of physical applications with experimental results. Covers the latest developments and applications. Algebraic Identification and Estimation Methods in Feedback Control Systems is a comprehensive reference for researchers and practitioners working in the area of automatic control, and is also a useful source of information for graduate and undergraduate students.

A purely mathematical matrix approach to the equations of the Classical Theory of General Relativity is developed. The absolute matrix of field is understood as the absolute electromagnetic-gravitational field matrix. The symmetric part of this matrix is the gravitational field matrix. The antisymmetric part is the electromagnetic field matrix. The equations for both these matrices and the metric matrix equation are derived. It is shown that the metric and field matrix equations are connected with each other. The general solution for the static spherically symmetric gravitational field is found. Two particular cases of the general solution are compared. One solution is the Schwarzschild metric. Another solution has no singularity as the Schwarzschild metric. It is shown that a second-order differential equation for the planar orbit is the same for both metrics, but the dimensionless energy (and an angular velocity) of the moving particle is different. The formulae for the minimum and maximum orbital velocity and for the perihelion precession of planets through perihelion and aphelion distances are given. The symmetric (gravitational) field matrix field and the solutions for the zero and nonzero invariant density are considered for the Friedmann-Lobachevsky model.

Engineers and other applied scientists are frequently faced with models of complex systems for which no rigorous mathematical solution can be calculated. To predict and calculate the behaviour of such systems, numerical approximations are frequently used, either based on measurements of real life systems or on the behaviour of simpler models. This is essential work for example for the process engineer implementing simulation, control and optimization of chemical processes for design and operational purposes. This fourth in a suite of five practical guides is an engineer's companion to using numerical methods for the solution of complex mathematical problems. It explains the theory behind current numerical methods and shows in a step-by-step fashion how to use them. The volume focuses on differential and differential-algebraic systems, providing numerous real-life industrial case studies to illustrate this complex topic. It describes the methods, innovative techniques and strategies that are all implemented in a freely available toolbox called BzzMath, which is developed and maintained by the authors and provides up-to-date software tools for all the methods described in the book. Numerous examples, sample codes, programs and applications are taken from a wide range of scientific and engineering fields, such as chemical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, medicine, and environmental science. As a result, engineers and scientists learn how to optimize processes even before entering the laboratory. With additional online material including the latest version of BzzMath Library, installation tutorial, all examples and sample codes used in the book and a host of further examples.

2014 Reprint of 1963 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Olga Aleksandrovna Ladyzhenskaya was a Soviet and Russian mathematician. She was known for her work on partial differential equations (especially Hilbert's 19th problem) and fluid dynamics. She provided the first rigorous proofs of the convergence of a finite difference method for the Navier-Stokes equations. This is a revised and updated edition of a book of fundamental importance in the rigorous theory of solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. The author considers the questions of their existence and uniqueness when satisfying appropriate boundary conditions. For this purpose she extends the class of permissible functions from the infinitely differentiable class (classical solutions) to a class of generalized functions defined in the distributional sense. Thus existence of solution in the new class is a necessary but not sufficient condition for existence in the classical sense. Linear and non-linear, steady and unsteady forms of the equations and both finite and infinite domains are all considered: in each type of problem important theorems are established in the course of which many new ideas and methods are developed. The book is strongly recommended to mathematicians interested in modern analysis and the rigorous theory of fluid mechanics.

Reprint. Paperback. 387 pp. Diophantus of Alexandria, sometimes called "the father of algebra", was an Alexandrian mathematician and the author of a series of books called Arithmetica. These texts deal with solving algebraic equations, many of which are now lost. In studying Arithmetica, Pierre de Fermat concluded that a certain equation considered by Diophantus had no solutions, and noted without elaboration that he had found "a truly marvelous proof of this proposition," now referred to as Fermat's Last Theorem. This led to tremendous advances in number theory, and the study of diophantine equations ("diophantine geometry") and of diophantine approximations remain important areas of mathematical research. Diophantus was the first Greek mathematician who recognized fractions as numbers; thus he allowed positive rational numbers for the coefficients and solutions. In modern use, diophantine equations are usually algebraic equations with integer coefficients, for which integer solutions are sought. Diophantus also made advances in mathematical notation. Heath's work is one of the standard books in the field.

This book is suitable as a textbook for a first course on Dynamic Relaxation technique in civil and mechanical engineering curricula. It can be used as a reference by engineers and scientists working in the industrial sector and in academic institutions. The first chapter includes an introduction to the Dynamic Relaxation method (DR) which is combined with the Finite Differences method (FD) for the sake of solving ordinary and partial differential equations, as a single equation or as a group of differential equations. In this chapter the dynamic relaxation equations are transformed to artificial dynamic space by adding damping and inertia effects. These are then expressed in finite difference form and the solution is obtained through iterations. In the second chapter the procedural steps in solving differential equations using the DR method were applied to the system of differential equations (i.e. ordinary and/or partial differential equations). The DR program performs the following operations: Reads data file; computes fictitious densities; computes velocities and displacements; checks stability of numerical computations; checks convergence of solution; and checks wrong convergence. At the end of this chapter the Dynamic Relaxation numerical method coupled with the Finite Differences discretization technique is used to solve nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations. Subsequently, a FORTRAN program is developed to generate the numerical results as analytical and/...

A new edition of this classic work, comprehensively revised to present exciting new developments in this important subject The study of numerical methods for solving ordinary differential equations is constantly developing and regenerating, and this third edition of a popular classic volume, written by one of the world’s leading experts in the field, presents an account of the subject which reflects both its historical and well-established place in computational science and its vital role as a cornerstone of modern applied mathematics. In addition to serving as a broad and comprehensive study of numerical methods for initial value problems, this book contains a special emphasis on Runge-Kutta methods by the mathematician who transformed the subject into its modern form dating from his classic 1963 and 1972 papers. A second feature is general linear methods which have now matured and grown from being a framework for a unified theory of a wide range of diverse numerical schemes to a source of new and practical algorithms in their own right. As the founder of general linear method research, John Butcher has been a leading contributor to its development; his special role is reflected in the text. The book is written in the lucid style characteristic of the author, and combines enlightening explanations with rigorous and precise analysis. In addition to these anticipated features, the book breaks new ground by including the latest results on the highly efficient G-symplectic methods which compete strongly with the well-known symplectic Runge-Kutta methods for long-term integration of conservative mechanical systems. This third edition of Numerical Methods for Ordinary Differential Equations will serve as a key text for senior undergraduate and graduate courses in numerical analysis, and is an essential resource for research workers in applied mathematics, physics and engineering.

Abstract algebraic logic is the more general and abstract side of algebraic logic, the branch of mathematics that studies the connections between logics and their algebra-based semantics. This emerging subfield of mathematical logic consolidated since the 1980s, and is considered as the algebraic logic of the twenty-first century; as such it is increasingly becoming an indispensable tool to approach the algebraic study of any (mainly sentential) logic in a systematic way. This book is an introductory textbook on abstract algebraic logic, and takes a bottom-up approach, treating first logics with a simpler algebraic study, such as Rasiowa's implicative logics, and then guides readers, by means of successive steps of generalization and abstraction, to meet more and more complicated algebra-based semantics. An entire chapter is devoted to Blok and Pigozzi's theory of algebraizable logics, proving the main theorems and incorporating later developments by other scholars. After a chapter with the basics of the classical theory of matrices, one chapter is devoted to an in-depth exposition of the semantics of generalized matrices. There are also two more avanced chapters providing introductions to the two hierachies that organize the logical landscape according to the criteria of abstract algebraic logic, the Leibniz hierarchy and the Frege hierarchy. All throughout the book, particular care is devoted to the presentation and classification of dozens of examples of particular ...

In the particular case of variational methods, the presentations used in the past are not adapted to the previous knowledge, the language and the centers of interest of the new generations. Since these methods remain a core knowledge – thus essential – in many fields (Physics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Image analysis …), a new presentation is necessary in order to address variational methods to the actual context.

The problem of modelling both the unsteady hydrodynamics and the topographical variations in natural channels is generally addressed by solving the de Saint Venant shallow water equations for the liquid phase together with the Exner sediment balance equation. This book focuses on the development of high order accurate centred schemes of the finite volume type for the numerical solution of the coupled de Saint Venant-Exner system. The schemes are tested by considering subcritical, supercritical, as well as transcritical flow conditions. They appear to correctly estimate the celerity of surface discontinuities as well of sediment bores and small bottom perturbations. The schemes are based on a simple centred approach, therefore they are certainly suitable for engineering purposes, often requiring simple numerical tools which can be easily used without addressing the mathematical details of the hyperbolic system of equations under consideration.

The aim of this book is to use a semi-analytic technique for solving singular initial value problems of ordinary differential equations with a singularity of different kinds to construct polynomial solution using two point osculatory interpolation. The efficiency and accuracy of suggested method is assessed by comparisons with exact and other approximate solutions for a wide classes of non-homogeneous,non-linear singular initial value problems. Many examples are presented to demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of the suggested method on one hand and to confirm the convergence order on the other hand, two applications in mathematical physics and astrophysics are presented, such as Lane-Emden equations and Emden-Fowler equations to model several problems such as the theory of stellar structure, the thermal behavior of a spherical cloud of gas, isothermal gas spheres and the theory of thermionic currents.
