The birth of any child has a major effect on the dynamics of the family. Some social welfare agencies opened schools for deaf, dumb and blind that was capable of receiving education in a school system. Such schools still exist in large cities, one in Karachi while other two are located in Lahore-Pakistan. The need of students of special school is the most central aspect of special education. It not only help teachers to plan, devise and implement modified curriculum but also guide them to create congenial classroom environment, set individual educational plans, arrange suitable educational resources, adopt effective teaching strategies, and select appropriate evaluation methods to improve the learning out comes of special children. A gradual realization has emerged that the education of a disable child is as important as the education of an able bodied main stream child. The special school system evolved in Pakistan as early as first decade of twentieth century; however the schools are not in sufficient numbers to cater all the special children. The role of non-government organizations (NGOs) is very significant in the development of special education in Pakistan.

The study of urban informal sector education has gained importance and expanded the scope and contents of the study in the last thirty years. One of the major challenges for geographers is finding the dynamics of this sector, as it is expanding gradually and a huge number of students are related to this activities. This research examines the role of education coaching as an urban informal activity. Dhaka city as a center of education has been experiencing the proliferation of coaching centers for the last twenty years. The mushrooming of coaching centers is symptomatic of the failure of Bangladesh's education system as a whole. Formal education institutions are failing to provide students with necessary instructions in the classrooms. This is why the guardians and their wards are making a beeline for education coaching. This research aims to describe the process of growth of coaching centers as an informal sector activity with a special emphasis on students' involvement in this process. As an empirical research, it follows a detailed questionnaire survey and direct interview method. This study discusses the size of economy controlled by the coaching centers, students' dependency on coaching and the impact of these phenomena.

Physical education teaching and learning efforts obviously target the student. Like parents, teachers, administrators and any other directly or indirectly involved parties, students do have opinions based on their experience on their respective physical education classes and physical education in general. These opinions, or so-called attitudes, are important to research due to their potential of giving insight to the learner's perspective, which may also serve as an authentic feedback from the student. This study investigated German secondary school students' attitudes toward physical education. Results have the intention to reveal what attitudes towards physical education German students have and which factors influence these attitudes. The study sample contained students from the different school types Gymnasium, Realschule, and Haupt-/Werkrealschule. The students were surveyed via questionnaire that was developed based on validated research instruments from prior studies in the field. Data was analyzed integrating independent variables such as students' gender, physical education grade, grade point average, body mass index, socioeconomic status, type of school, citizenship, and the exercise and physical activity behavior of students, their parents and their peers.

In the U.S., minority students lag behind their White and Asian counterparts academically at all levels of the educational structure. Research has shown that the perceptions and attitudes teachers hold regarding their students can have a significant impact on their students' performance and achievement. Studies have found that teachers often carry negative stereotypes regarding non-Asian minority students, which seem to contribute to the failure and discouragement amongst these students. This research found that non-education majors had significantly higher, or more positive, affective racial attitudes than education majors. Additionally, students with higher aptitudes, as measured by ACT or SAT score, reported higher, or more positive, affective attitudes than those with lower aptitudes, and students who had never taken an education course reported higher, or more positive, affective racial attitudes than students who had taken education courses. Educational professionals should re-evaluate the current diversity education requirements and opportunities at both the university and school district levels.

Many children will have SEN of some kind at some time during their education. Help will usually be provided in their ordinary, mainstream early education setting or school, sometimes with the help of outside specialists. It is envisaged that this book will be useful to education students as it identifies different types of disabilities and highlights strategies to be used in accommodating pupils with such disabilities in ordinary classrooms. It is divided into two units. Unit One dwells on basic terms and concepts and historical developments in special education, while Unit Two presents types of disabilities, their causes, and educational implications of children with such disabilities. The textbook ends with Unit Three which is basically on the mainstreaming of students with special needs in the ordinary classrooms situations.

How are their relationships with the adults? Do their family lives have an impact on their success at school? This book concentrates on problem issues and answers these questions. It reveals information that will allow parents and educators to better understand various experiences of gifted high school students by studying the reasons and needs of their transferring behavior from public schools to an alternative school. No previous study has traced the transferring behavior of gifted high school students. This study reveals the negative academic and social effects of traditional education at public schools for gifted students and shows the benefits of appropriately planned educational programs that challenged these students. The gifted students of this study speak out and show how their educational experiences have influenced their achievement and contentment at school and how no matter what happened at school and in their lives they resisted dropping out of school.

The System of Education in Morocco is in Arabic till high school, whereas higher education is still conducted in French (for scientific subjects alone, literary studies are carried out in Arabic). The shift of the medium of instruction from Arabic to French may hinder students' achievement at the university and other related institutes. This division of the system of education may result in having two types of graduates: Frenchified ones who may get lucrative jobs and Arabized ones left with not well paid ones. By investigating the implications of Arabizing the system of Education on the level of achievements of first year students at the university, this research tries to shed light on a more complex issue which is the ability of these faculties to provide good quality graduates who are able to contribute to the development of the country. It attempts to investigate the impact of the shift in the medium of instruction from Arabic to French on students' achievements at the university and to look at the impact of Arabizing the system of education up to high school on the quality of university graduates, and to what extent such plan has promoted the sector of higher eduction.

Over the past three decades, the standards-based reform movement has transformed K-12 education in theUnited States, culminating with passage of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2002. Beyond makingreasonable accommodations for special needs students, standards-based education pays little attention toother areas of student difference, relying instead on a "rational actor" model of student experience, andignoring how differences in students' backgrounds and orientations impact their particular experiences ofschooling. This book examines the development of standards-based education, with particular scrutiny of the roles ofthe National Governors' Association and its National Education Summit events. Examination of importantdocuments emerging from those events provides an illustration of the conceptually impoverishedunderstanding of student subjectivity, motivation, and agency inherent in standards-based education. In order to understand both problems with andalternatives to standards-based education, the author examines the roles of ideology, rhetoric, and audience in school policy. In three case studies, the author analyzes several non-school models of education, including Marine Corps bootcamp, Ving Tsun kung fu training, andan online, school resistance community. Johnson argues that examination of these learning contexts provides a better understanding of theshortcomings and dangers of the standards-based model of student subjectivity, and suggests a set of fourte...

It is a call to action for faculty, staff, and administrators in all facets of higher education, and emphasizes the shared responsibility toward students with disabilities and toward creating meaningful change. This monograph begins with a look into the future of disability education. How will students create their own identities? Will there be a need for disability accommodations or will a universally designed world eliminate that current necessity? It also looks at the past, with discussions of disability legislation such as the ADA of 1990, the impact of Supreme Court decisions, descriptions of college students with disabilities, and the paradigm shift from the medical “deficit” model of disability to one that focuses on the individual’s lived experience as a social construct. Drawing on theoretical frameworks in multiple disciplines, disability identity development is explained, ally development is defined, and disability services are explored. The monograph ends with a discussion of where disability education is now and how faculty, staff, and administrators will continue to be allies of inclusion for students in the years to come. This is the 5th issue of the 39th volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Say Hello to Your Incoming Class—They're Not Millennials Anymore Generation Z is rapidly replacing Millennials on college campuses. Those born from 1995 through 2010 have different motivations, learning styles, characteristics, skill sets, and social concerns than previous generations. Unlike Millennials, Generation Z students grew up in a recession and are under no illusions about their prospects for employment after college. While skeptical about the cost and value of higher education, they are also entrepreneurial, innovative, and independent learners concerned with effecting social change. Understanding Generation Z's mindset and goals is paramount to supporting, developing, and educating them through higher education. Generation Z Goes to College showcases findings from an in-depth study of over 1,100 Generation Z college students from 15 vastly different U.S. higher education institutions as well as additional studies from youth, market, and education research related to this generation. Authors Corey Seemiller and Meghan Grace provide interpretations, implications, and recommendations for program, process, and curriculum changes that will maximize the educational impact on Generation Z students. Generation Z Goes to College is the first book on how this up-and-coming generation will change higher education.

Contemporary American colleges are increasingly queer places, where significant steps toward inclusion of BGLT students have been made. Tracing the journey of BGLT students' emergence, which parallels the modern gay rights movement in America, this monograph provides an overview of data and theory derived from studying BGLT students and student movements in higher education. Offering context for the ways that previously marginalized students in higher education survive and thrive, this issue: Tells the story of their growing visibility on campus Summarizes collective knowledge to date about BGLT identity development Takes stock of transgender students' distinctive position and experiences in higher education Assesses the role of the BGLT campus resource center in supporting students and advancing equity. This issue develops a picture of the ways that BGLT community activism informs scholarship (and vice versa). In the telling of the movement's stories, these lessons suggest a practice of collaborative transformation for advancing the future of BGLT equality in higher education. Undergraduate students come to college from a myriad of pathways for a variety of purposes, and the same can be said of them as they leave to head off into their next endeavors. Arguably, the most important goal of higher education is to prepare students to achieve their postcollege aspirations, and campuses typically pursue that goal through a combination of curricular and co-curricular programs and services for students. This issue offers readers a glimpse into contemporary context and practice related to helping students with their after-college transition from one form of education (two-year or four-year) to the next (four-year, graduate, or professional school), from education to workforce, or from education to military service. This is the 138th volume of this Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly series. An indispensable resource for vice presidents of student affairs, deans of students, student counselors, and other student services professionals, New Directions for Student Services offers guidelines and programs for aiding students in their total development: emotional, social, physical, and intellectual.

Graphing calculators are a mainstay in the U.S. high school mathematics curriculum and because of that considerable research has been done on their effect in the mathematics classroom. While much of this work has focused on the impact of graphing calculator use on achievement and attitude, little has been done to address how students use the graphing calculator when they are working in independent situations or their perceptions of how the graphing calculator impacts their mathematical experience. As such, the work in this book provides a new lens through which to view graphing calculator use, the lens of the student. Six case studies of high school calculus students, their words and their actions, provide insight into the reasons why and the ways with which these students incorporate graphing calculator use in their independent mathematics activity. The results of the study will be of interest to both mathematics teachers and mathematics education researchers who are interested in the role that technology plays in students' mathematical activity.

Contemplative pedagogy is a way for instructors to: empower students to integrate their own experience into the theoretical material they are being taught in order to deepen their understanding; help students to develop sophisticated problem-solving skills; support students’ sense of connection to and compassion for others; and engender inquiries into students’ most profound questions. Contemplative practices are used in just about every discipline—from physics to economics to history—and are found in every type of institution. Each year more and more faculty, education reformers, and leaders of teaching and learning centers seek out best practices in contemplative teaching, and now can find them here, brought to you by two of the foremost leaders and innovators on the subject. This book presents background information and ideas for the practical application of contemplative practices across the academic curriculum from the physical sciences to the humanities and arts. Examples of contemplative techniques included in the book are mindfulness, meditation, yoga, deep listening, contemplative reading and writing, and pilgrimage, including site visits and field trips.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Pedagogy - Adult Education, grade: Pass, La Trobe University Melbourne, course: Doctor of Education, language: English, abstract: Graduate employability has become a highly topical and contested issue in Vietnam. Many employers report that university students are not suitably prepared for work, and universities are often criticised for their poor commitment to developing student employability assets. Much of the criticism identifies the causes to be an outdated higher education curriculum coupled with too much reliance on traditional teaching approaches, and a general poor capacity of universities to support students to develop the skills that the market requires. This study challenges this 'common sense' (Gramsci, 1999) criticism that places the responsibility of student transition to the employment market squarely on the shoulders of universities. By analysing qualitative data, that includes the voices of students, recent graduates and employers, on issues related to employability, this study locates the criticisms of the Vietnamese higher education system within the wider social and cultural contexts related to the difficulties of student transition. It adopts Hillage and Pollard's (1998) employability conceptual framework where the interplay between student employability assets, the ways students translate or deploy their university achievements in employment (Knight & York, 2004) and the int...

An insider’s guide to the coming philanthropic revolution Meet the next generation of big donors—the Gen X and Millennial philanthropists who will be the most significant donors ever and will shape our world in profound ways. Hear them describe their ambitious plans to revolutionize giving so it achieves greater impact. And learn how to help them succeed in a world that needs smart, effective donors now more than ever. As “next gen donors” step into their philanthropic roles, they have not only unprecedented financial resources, but also big ideas for how to wield their financial power. They want to disrupt the traditional world of charitable giving, and they want to do so now, not after they retire to a life of philanthropic leisure. Generation Impact pulls back the curtain on these rising leaders and their “Impact Revolution,” offering both extensive firsthand accounts and expert analysis of the hands-on, boundary-pushing, unconventional strategies next gen donors are beginning to pursue. This fascinating book also shows another side of the donors in Generation Impact: they want to respect the past even as they transform the future. They are determined to honor the philanthropic legacies and values they’ve inherited by making big giving more effective than ever before. If they succeed, they can make historic progress on causes from education to the environment, from human rights to health care. Based on years of research and close engagement with next gen donors, Generation Impact offers a unique profile of the new faces of philanthropy. Find out, directly from them: How they want to revolutionize giving to expand its positive impact on our lives and our communities. Which causes interest them, how they want to engage with those causes … and, perhaps more important, how they do not want to engage. Which new tools and strategies for change excite them most. What they are learning from previous generations, and what they want to bring to their work alongside those generations. How we can all ensure their historic potential is channeled in ways that make our world better. The Impact Revolution will be messy, but it could also result in solutions for some of our most persistent problems. Generation Impact offers targeted, practical advice to parents, families, and their advisors, as well as nonprofit professionals—those who work closest with these next gen donors—on how to engage, nurture, and encourage them as they reshape major giving and make their mark on history. Help them channel their enthusiasm—and their wealth—to make the most positive difference in a world with such great need.

A volume in Research in Educational Policy: Local, National, and Global PerspectivesSeries Editor: Kenneth K. Wong, Brown UniversityThe impetus behind this volume stems from reflections on commemorations of the historic Brown v. Board of Education decision. Brown turned 60 in May of 2014, and many special issues of peer-reviewed journals were dedicated to that anniversary. Unlike most special issues and volumes, we sought to highlight a smaller part of Brown, though no less significant. More specifically, we thought to develop a volume that focused on rural education in the aftermath of the decision. Most of the education policy and education reform literature caters to urban and suburban contexts, and very few academic books and journal articles-with the exception of research conducted by Craig, Amy, and Caitlin Howley and the Journal for Research on Rural Education-focus on rural education in the US. Thus, we wanted this volume to focus on the politics of educational opportunity in rural contexts. There is a paucity of rigorous research that examines how education policy affects the conditions of rural education. More specifically, research is scarce in examining the ways in which students in rural schools and districts have access to educational opportunities, although approximately one-third of all public schools are located in rural areas (Ayers, 2011). Educational opportunity in rural districts has been plagued by geographic isolation, loss of economic bases, and lack of...

A volume in Urban Education Studies SeriesSeries Editors Nicholas D. Hartlep, Illinois State University,Thandeka K. Chapman, University of California, San Diego and Kenny Varner, Louisiana State UniversityIn urban education, "urban" is a floating signifier that is imbued with meaning, positive or negative by its users. "Urban"can be used to refer to both the geographical context of a city and a sense of "less than," most often in relation to race and/or socioeconomic status (Watson, 2011). For Noblit and Pink (2007), "Urban, rather, is a generalization as much aboutgeography as it is about the idea that urban centers have problems: problems of too many people, too much poverty, toomuch crime and violence, and ultimately, too little hope" (p. xv). Recently, urban education scholars such as Anyon(2005), Pink and Noblit (2007), Blanchett, Klinger and Harry (2009), and Lipman (2013) have elucidated the socialconstruction of oppression and privilege for urban students, teachers, schools, families, and communities usingintersectionality theories. Building on their work, we see the need for an edited collection that would look across the different realms of urban education-theorizingidentity markers in urban education, education in urban schools and communities, thinking intersectionally in teacher education & higher education, educational policies& urban spaces-seeking to better understand each topic using an intersectional lens.
